I know there have been many threads like this but I'm just looking for clarification as this is my first Android phone. At my house I usually get the Rogers H speed with 3/4 bars. When I browse the Internet for just an hour, 15% of the battery has been drained. Is this normal on these speeds?
I plan on leaving an IM client on 24/7 and using GPS/maps daily, so I am a bit worried because this may not last the entire day. I could switch to EDGE when I don't need it but apparently I heard that will disconnect once I start a voice call (and want to keep my IM on always). I checked my battery stats and apparently the cell standby (H) is taking most of the battery.
I am using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 with stock radio from Bell. I'm going to try to see if SetCPU makes a difference. And is there any program that can limit the HSPDA bandwidth so less battery is used? Thanks.
call *#*#4636#*#*
If you are at home or in a Wi-Fi accessible, Turn ON wifi - it uses wayyyyy less battery than the phone radio when it comes to Data....
you could get a extended battery.... Mugen Power has one for 1800 mAH and its the same size as the stock battery so no need of a bigger door.
What is your screen brightness set at? The screen is one of the top battery drain culprits. Try turning off auto-brightness, and turning the brightness down to as low as you find tolerable (depending on personal taste, and the lighting conditions in the places you use the phone the most). I recently just lowered my brightness to 35% (still plenty bright under many conditions) from 45%, and already noticing a significant improvement in batter life. Battery usage of the display dropped from over 70% to 45-50%. I haven't had the brightness set this low long enough to see how it translates to hours/days between charges, but we'll see how it goes . . ..
my battery life is retarded. probably less than yours. i swear i think i lose 1% of battery per minute of web surfing. battery is fine if you do not go on the web and have 2g on all day.
Yeah, it's pretty bad.
But that's the same for most smartphones nowadays I think...
Back to the days of game gear, the battery muncher.
6AA = 5 hours of gameplay.
I just bought some Chinese 1500maH batteries on eBay and I don't know if they're actually 1500maH. If I play with my phone a bit, I get 50% after 8 hours at work. Yikes!

Assuming the screen was on the entire time, 15% drain for an hour of web surfing sounds pretty good to me. The main battery eater while using the phone is the screen, so I doubt messing with your connectivity is going to drastically change your battery consumption in this usage scenario. Changing connectivity to Wifi or EDGE would probably help more during those times when your phone is off but your phone is still connected to the internet.
On a side note, I had terrible idle battery life when I was using CyanogenMod 6.1.1 on my Desire Z. When I was using my phone, battery life seemed normal. But when the phone was on standby, it seemed like my phone was running even when it was supposed to be on standby. I suspect it might have been SetCPU constantly polling in the background. I switched to Virtuous and didn't install SetCPU/didn't do any overclocking and my life improved literally threefold.
hi all
I'll buy Iconia A500
But I heard that the battery life 4-5 hr only
is it really ?
Also learned that it can run USB 3G Modem by patch.. Search for a video on YouTube about this but did not found.. is there video ?? and how much battery life when using 3G Modem..
mmmmmmmmmm
if battery bad
can i change batter?? any tablet battery can be used??
I apologize for the many qestions and my bad language
I don't know about the rest, but my battery lasts about 9 hours of reading e-books and comics, some games (a lot of gaming = about 6 hours). I don't do much video watching, but someone who does can answer that for you..
To answer the obvious, battery life depends on the kind of use you put it to.
Reading eBooks, playing games can be quite draining on the battery. Maybe up to about 7-9 hours. If you light browsing, wifi always on to get mail and do light reading, you could potentially get up to about 50 hours or more of battery life.
Cheers!
thanks for answer
what about USB 3G Modem ??
Best I can tell you need either one of the custom ROMs or a custom kernel file for the 3g USB modems; see the A500 Developer forum for more details. Battery life shouldn't be horribly affected while using an external modem, although you will lose some battery life.
My Iconia tends to last the entire day on a single charge; I leave the WiFi on full time for the most part, and get a couple of hours of off-and-on web, email and e-Reading during the day with a good solid 3-5 hours use at night. I do suggest charging once a day just to keep from running out unexpectedly, but I have had it last two days of light use before when I missed the charger being unplugged...
i cant confirm battery life with a 3g modem attached but without one my tablet usually last about 2 days, thats with wifi always on but with airplane mode on(helps with the cell standby bug for me), 5 hours of display time mostly web browsing, downloading and email usage.

I believe s-off has something to do with the 'radio' in the tablet, which sends and receives signals. The cell standby bug is that when Acer made the software for the tablet, they never disabled the 3g module that continuously looks for a 3g signal. This is a big battery drain and can be disabled by using an app that will do it for you, if your device is rooted.
I have a question: I have been thinking about getting the a100 which is supposed to come out 'early august.' It looks like the only differences will be the screen size, half the RAM, and maybe the size of the battery(s) they put in the tablet.
Can anyone give me information on how their battery life is while listening to music? Is it a massive drain, or is it nice on the system and not cause much issue?
Thanks for the information!

I do wish people wouldn't keep repeating this blatant misinformation.
How can there be a battery drain when the cell hardware doesn't even exist? Sure, the app is polling, but there's no hardware there so the ONLY battery drain is the minor amount caused by the app running. What you're seeing in the battery status is merely a erroneous data caused by the app failing to connect to the non-existent cell hardware.
If the battery usage it indicates were true, your battery would be flat in about 6-8 hours. Mine is now on its 3rd day without charging and is STILL above 40%

You can't really depend on having battery life like that if your using it. He's got 20 hours off the charger but it was idle mist of those 20 hours. Me with heavy usage internet, quick games, YouTube I get about 9-10 hours

I've been having very poor battery life with my htc hd2 running gingerbread and am posting my battery usage stats to see if this is typical or something is up with my phone. The attached picture shows battery drain every 5 minutes in airplane mode and with all applications quit. My area is rated as having excelent reception and is mostly covered with tmobile's 4g network.
not typical
That's definitely not typical, in my case anyway. to get that pattern of battery usage I'd have to be constantly doing things like surfing, listening to music, playing games. That's with dominanx's high end rom, overclocked to 1.5GB.
Do you have any homescreen widgets it might be? I used Picuram for a little while but got rid after noticing it was using most of my battery.
Nothing running really... I had the 4x2 super clock and that was my only widget. I get the same kind of drain in miui based roms as well.....
I have a Telus S3 and I must say for a 2100 mah battery, I can't event get a day out of it which I am very surprised because all the reviews were raving about battery.

Are the reviews your reading is on the International model? If so, of course the battery life would be better because it doesn't support LTE. LTE drains the battery big time.
Are you using LTE or HSPA?

If it isn't a bug or a rebel app draining your battery then it must be the LTE. I'm using my SGH-T999V on Wind's network and the battery life is incredible. I get at least 24 hours per charge with moderate use.
Same here - in Ottawa - using the SGS3 - LTE.
I am "lucky" if I get 4-5 hours out of the battery - even when I am almost (not even "using" it).
It drains super fast.
I, too have wondered why there are some that rave about how great the battery life is, yet there are also those of us out here whose experience is just the opposite - in that the battery drain/life is ABYSMAL.
What's going on ?
Was there a bad "batch" from the factory ?
Are there some bad batches of batteries ?
Does LTE have something to do with it ?
Is the reported "standby info" the issue - in that it is not only the reporting of what is being used, but that it is actually using a ton of the battery power somehow ?
I have not found any answers out there yet.
I too am experiencing poor battery life. I'm using a Samsung Galaxy S3 in British Columbia and am with Telus.
I'm lucky to get 8 hours with what I would consider relatively light use i.e. moderate texting, brief web browsing and no gaming.
I've done all the suggested tweaks to improve battery life such as turn wifi/bt off, sync off, power save on, screen brightness low, disabled many background apps, Haptic off, motion off, only one weather widget going etc etc. I've basically disabled every fun feature on this phone off and still get miserable battery life.
I'm going to turn LTE off today and switch to the GSM/HSPA Auto mode only and see what kind of difference this makes.
Maybe others could follow suit and post some results?
Let's sort this out. I bought this thing because initial reports had great reviews on battery life.
Cheers.
I was getting horrible battery life as well, so I left all the fun stuff on except for disabling LTE. With LTE enabled, I was losing about 10% per hour with very low use. With LTE off, I'm losing about 1% /hour. I only made the change around noon EST, but it made a very big difference right away.
I should note that I'm in downtown Toronto, with full signal strength. Checking the battery screen shows that Cell Standby is what used 42% of my battery so far today.

It's only been a couple of hours but I'm getting the same results. With LTE off I'm seeing roughly a 1% drop in battery per hour down from about 10% with LTE on.
Lame.
There are a few problems floating around but if you did some research you would find that using better battery stats app will help you find what exactly is killing your battery life.
Anyways, apparently there's one particularly nasty bug where whenever you touch your screen (even when locked) it will wake and prevent it from going into deep sleep.
https://github.com/asksven/BetterBatteryStats-Knowledge-Base/wiki/AudioOut_1
Menu -> Sounds -> uncheck "Touch Sounds", uncheck "Screen lock Sounds"
Look at your battery info screen and see exactly what is draining your battery the most.
I am at 92% with 2h 11m 41s on battery. screen takes up 51% of that drain. At that rate my phone will last 27.5 hours.

Another problem is the cell standby % is wrong by a factor of 10. Either apply the cell standby fix for rooted phones or divide the % by 10 to get the actual drain.

I did read about that bug a little bit when I was originally looking for info; but it was my understanding that it affects the reported usage by cell standby, not the actual battery remaining.
Is that not the case? Does the bug also affect the reported overall battery remaining? Also, I don't remember seeing anything about it affecting Canadian GS3s, only the international models. But I didn't look very hard at that, so I may be completely incorrect.
I'm just reaching 15 hours with 3.5 hours screen on,, 26% battery left.
same here in europe, no LTE here, i'm on HSDPA...i may be wrong but my baterry lasted first few days for 20 hours, than after firmware update maybe 10 with minimum use or 6 with normal usage....
expect solution soon or replacing it...

i was hoping people were having the same problem as me. 2nd day using my verizon sgs3 and right now 55% 4hrs and 10min. I hate this. Hope there is an easy solution or im going to have to take it back. Maybe i should drain the battery to 0 cuz i didn't last night and it might not be calibrated correctly yet...what do you guys think?
unplugging at 6.45 am, going to bed at 11.30pm I still had 17% left the day before yesterday. After some heavy use yesterday I only got to about 8.30pm before I was asking to be charged again.
Pretty happy over all. I think I'll comfortably get a day out of it once I stop obsessing with it

I've had this phone for around week (off craigslist so it's been broken in) and I can't seem to get any sort of good battery life from this device. I mean yeah it's ok, max I've gotten is 2.5 hours sot with 10-12 hr standby.
This screen is from today so far. I'm already down to 40% and not even at 2 hrs sot yet. What's going on? I've tried Franco's kernel, fauxs kernel, and now I'm on matr1x kernel. (all with undervolting) I've tried carbon, stock, and now I'm on rasenjb.
I don't think I'll ever get to these 5 and 6 hour sot times with a day and a half of standby everyone is getting.. I bought this device because of how good the battery life I saw everyone was getting and it's been a big disappointment so far. I've tried almost everything and that's why I made this thread. Does anyone have any suggestions?
That's because everyone liked to install custom kernels, underclock, never use their phone like a normal phone and then claim 5 hours SOT which is total BS.
Expect 10-12 hours with 3 hours SOT, that's normal. I've gotten way better than that but only when connected to Wifi and almost no actual phone calls. Anytime you're on the cellular network expect 10-12 hours tops

I've seen a lot of screen shots with 4hrs + though. I guess it's only achievable on WiFi. I'm on HSPA+ for 8 hours of the day and then I come home and there's WiFi. Don't be hating because you are in a poor signal area. I get 6hrs sot on wifi and at least 4hrs on hspa+. If you are in an area that is a weaker signal, like 3g and edge with only one bar, sot will be less. I am stock rooted, including kernel. If a person doesn't use the phone the battery will last a long time, but the sot will also be low. For example, 24hrs of battery life with only one hour of sot pretty much means the phone was just laying there and barely used. On the other hand, 10hrs of battery life with 5hrs of screen time means the phone was used much and faired good. Apart from sot, cell signal is the biggest battery drainer. When I go to my sis-in-laws, which is a very weak area, my battery steadily drains with my phone just in my pocket. *edit* I should also note, when at home on wifi, I'm also on my Microcell, so I always have a strong signal.

I usually get between 2.5 and 3.5 hours screen on time. Sometimes better, sometimes worse. You can use better battery stats to diagnose and try to kill unnecessary wakelocks. And yes you can under clock and sacrifice functionality, but rest assured 5-6 hours sot is not typical, even if some people can achieve it on a regular basis.

Yeah! Its true. Poor signal make your phone drain more battery.
If in your carrier the 2G signal is better than 3G. Set the phone to use only 2G network. (GSM)
Put this in the phone app: *#*#4636#*#* and see the difference.

You're not talking about real world usage. Nobody uses their phone like that. It's people like you that come into threads where regular users with genuine concerns and questions get ridiculed by some guy who has his "phone" set up like some friggin science project talking about 5-6 hours SOT.
Google Search: Nexus 4 poor battery life
About 12,600,000 results (0.19 seconds)
Google Search: Galaxy S3 poor battery life
About 6,310,000 results(0.24 seconds)
^that's half of the results and the S3 has been out way longer with millions more users/owners
Obviously the Nexus 4 has a sub-par battery for today's standards. Case closed.
I answered his question with real life facts, and you're in here spinning fairy tales feeding a delusion that he can go about using his phone like a normal person and get 5-6 hours SOT.
So yeah, you're lying IMO.
Having a poor signal doesn't cut SOT by 4 hours.
Yes, I forget, I'm not using my phone in the real world when I'm working on my science project. Lol. Sorry buddy, but I did unlock my bootloader and root in order to transfer app data from my previous phone, but I am running the stock rom, even odexed version, and stock kernel. I have syncing, nfc, wifi, and gps always enabled. The only thing I don't keep on is Google Now because I don't use it. If you bothered to look closely at the screen shots, you would see the constant strong signal due to my Microcell. When on a weaker cellular signal, it cuts into my sot. I use a Microcell because without it, I get a really crummy signal, so I know firsthand what battery drain is like. And as I stated, on cellular only, I get 4-5hrs screen time, worse if I'm in a really poor location. Idk where you get this 4hr difference from.

I usually get around 3.5 - 4 on Franco m2 and carbon Rom browsing the internet on WiFi. No other weird settings, all sync on. It's closer to about 3 doing the same on mobile data. Playing games will toast my battery. I'm still plenty satisfied with my battery life.

Also, watch your background apps, Facebook and Google maps have caused battery drain for some people.

I uninstalled facebook. Also Google maps, Google search and most of the other common battery drainers are on greenify. I've come to the conclusion that my mobile data radio is the biggest drainer. Would upgrading my radio offer a more efficient battery life? (I've never upgraded a radio on any of my devices before)

It probably is low signal strength killing your battery, I should have thrown in the fact that 90% of the time I have full signal. Flashing a radio is no biggie, just dont be stupid about it and kill power halfway through the flash. No need to wipe anything either. I think i saw some recovery flashable ones around here, but i like to use fastboot whenever possible. .48 is the latest official radio, with .54 coming from an international white n4. I'm on .48 and holding off until .54 becomes official before deciding to test it out, since .48 is golden for me. Test all of them, older doesnt mean worse and some people have better luck with the older radios.
It may not be relevant to your experience, but I was disappointed initially in N4's battery life too. Even after dialing down most automatic syncing, being very conservative with screen brightness, and other standard measures.
I installed wake lock detector. In my case, Dropbox was at the top of the list, with an inordinate # of system wake ups.
Turned out a copy of Dropbox on another machine on the same network was, with the 'LAN Sync' option enabled by default, sending out gobs of wake-on-lan packets and was waking up the N4 very often; something that would happen even without Dropbox on the N4, presumably.
Disabling Dropbox's LAN sync seemed to bump my battery life ~20-30%.
Google told me 10 - 12 hours continuous useage. I haven't had anything like that from mine.

Thanks for the info! How do I check which radio version I have?

Why are you fairies arguing?
I got my n4 yesterday and battery seems decent. I was listening to spotify while driving and spent about 1.5 hours in the gym listening to it as well. Also throughout the day was messaging, Facebook, twitter etc. Not heavily, but every once in a while. I'm satisfied.
