[Q] Recommend a Google Reader App - Nook Color Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use Google's Reader app off my phone by can't stand that it's full screen in the list but phone sized when in an entry on the Nook.
Anyone recommend a reader that's full screen throughout?

im using greader (not to be confused with the google created "google reader")
in landscape, you have the 2 column layout; similar to the webpage
just wish i could find an google reader for android that did the website layout 100%, so i dont have to go back and forth between an article and the list, as well as waiting for it to refresh between both screens on the nook color, since you could easily have the tags/rss-feeds, even if truncated on the left; then the tag/rss entry list; and finally the txt from the entry all out in horizontal configuration...

Actually, you can fix that. If you go into the build.prop file after you have set system to r/w you will find that the lcd density line is set to 161. I don't have the nook in front of me and I can't remember where I learned this so I am trying to recall the line from memory. Just look for the one that ends in 161. If you change it to 160, boom, google reader is fixed and will be full screen. Every time I flash a new nightly/RC it sets it back to 161 and I have to go in and change it to 160. PM me if you get stuck

That fixed it but ADW is squished, though nothing else affected. Thanks

huh. I never notice any impact on the zeam launcher.

HTC Desire HD Default Icons

Hi I have dhd but when installing apps then transfering them to the memory card, when having custom folders on the home screen restaring the device causes the icons to show as the standard default android icons. Is there anyway of making keep the original app ones?
Thanks
I have the same issue as well.

I have found a solution that although it works for me is perhaps not ideal.
If you change the 'skin' to something other than the one you are using, this seems to sort the problem. You can then change back to your original.
The only other thing I had to do was to then change the wallpaper back to what I wanted, but this does not make any difference to the solution.
Let me know if this works for you.

This issue is not that simple. Even if the phone is on for days, the icons don't change. Even selecting them to open the app makes no difference.
The only way I can resolve this issue is to do what I said in my previous post. I have also found that if HTC Sense has to force close and restart, then the correct app icons appear.

Alternate Home Screen Launchers good to go?

I do not own a Kindle Fire yet I understand that Kindle Fire technically runs 2.3. Since sideloading is good to go, has anybody tried running an alternate home screen launcher? I know it won't look at good as a tablet running honeycomb, but at least it will have more tablet look. My wife is on the fence about getting either an Acer A100 or this Kindle Fire. Oh and she is not computer literate and thinks that root is the part of the tree that resides under the ground. Thanks everybody!
I was able to load Go launcher on mine - it looks nice.
My wife is also technically challenged - that said, it's technically her device, she preferred the native launcher - I do too.
Why? For her the ease of 'click to launch' all in one place rather than scrolling through screens.
Fwiw, my kids were able to turn on the device and navigate - the out-of-the-box carousel launcher is quite intuitive.
I found it (native launcher) launched the apps faster, actually - although ymmv - hence my preference for the native launcher.
Interesting, thank you for your time and input regarding this matter. I probably will download the app that will help my wife switch between go launcher and the native launcher app for the kindle. I'm running go Launcher on my SGS II so she should have zero issues customizing it to her likings.
Thanks again for your assistance!
You bet! Glad to help.

I tried Go Launcher, but didn't like it that much. Having used ADW on my Droid for a long time I decided to try it out, and I have to say I much prefer it.
I even have Beautiful Widgets running on it too.
However, a couple of problems I've seen.
1. I can't create folders?
2. There is no GeoLocate (even for WiFi), so I can't get the weather working. Anyone get this working or have any tips?
Passing on a little tip for those that haven't rooted and don't have the Android Market running. Beautiful Widgets requires the Market for themes/skins etc. What I've found is that if I download to my phone, and then copy the contents of /data/beautifulwidgets/scskins, skins and wskins to my Kindle, I am able to select the widgets.
ADW EX works great.
Launcher pro keeps FC.
The only two I have tried.
I just bought the Fire today and it is seriously a tiny tablet without a camera. Pretty cool.
I'm using adw.ex without issue. Only complaint is that you have to.switch back to the kindle interface to browse your books and magazines and custom desktop backgrounds revert to kindle backgrounds after screen unlock.

deleted. sorry
VTLauncher also nothing but FC unfortunately.

Am I the only one who seems to love the Amazon backgrounds, and even more so that they change? I for one will try and keep them if we ever get a custom ROM.
With ADW Launcher, and an almost opaque Beautiful Widget Super Clock widget, mine looks fantastic!

In the Beautiful Weather setting, there is a section for location settings. In this section, you can toggle geolocation and manually search for a location. I got it working fine on my Fire with Launcher Pro.

Zeam Launcher doesn't work for me.
Force Closes.
Tried several different versions.
Anyone get it working?

Wish I could remember which app I was playing with but I don't. The important part that I want to share was that it showed that the Fire internal settings showed that there is a GPS and it's on. Since there really isn't one perhaps that's why apps are having troubles. They query the OS and it's says there is an active GPS yet the data returned from the get GPS location call is worthless so the app gets confused. Whichever app it was that showed the setting also had the ability to turn GPS off. Can't help but wonder if that'd make a difference.

I'm getting force closes with ADW EX. I can't seem to remove it either. Could someone post the trick to remove this application?
EDIT: I got ADW removed, maybe I was using an old version or something.
EDIT 2: I got a later version of ADW to work. The only issue so far is getting the "Kindle" application to execute.
Thanks
YMark, same here - I have ADW running fine, yet the book reader app is not working. Maybe fix permissions and reboot?

If LP is crashing for you, convert it to a system app in titanium backup and reboot. Don't select LP as your default launcher until you are sure it won't crash it you'll end up in a loop and have to adb to remove LP. Ask me how i know

Kingsoft app force closes?

I have rooted my GF's Nook Color with the last stable CM7 root, it is an internal (emmc) root.
I downloaded a few apps I know she'll want, one of which being a document editor for her book, and other documents. Most of which are in .doc and .docx format. The main app I found to be most user friendly, and most like Microsoft Word, was Kingsoft Office app. Well about halfway into reading a document, maybe 2-5 mins after opening the app, it will say the application needs to force close. I have run Fix Permissions in Rom Manager, but to no avail.
I am also having an issue setting wallpapers. I have followed several guides, and I believe my images are sized correctly. But when I long press the screen and go to set a wallpaper, I go to my gallery and select my picture and it brings me to a crop screen. No matter how I crop it, which I cant do a full crop where I can see the full image, I cant get the image to show up correctly. I've read multiple guides on how to change the wallpaper, but so far nothing is working. I do not know which launcher I am using, I guess I'm on whatever comes with the latest CM7. Id like to stick with whatever i'm using because so far It seems to have the best shortcut position and grid on the screen.
Any help and advice for these issues would be greatly appreciated. I have yet to receive help from some other posts on other sites, so I'm hoping to get some here.
Thank you in advance for your time.
I love that I have posted two threads here and not a single person has helped, yet I've been told this is the best and most active forum to get help on for these issues. What a load of crock. Searching through multiple threads with similar issues yet no solutions does not help me. I could really use some guidance here people.
Can't help with Kingsoft since I don't use it. Recommend QuickPic for setting correct wallpaper size on NC.

[PARANOIDANDROID TABLET APPS] Apps with Different Tablet Mode UIs

I'm stepping out a bit here and starting a thread for apps with distinctly different Tablet Mode UIs for the Paranoid Android ROM. Bear with me, this is my first time doing anything like this, so please excuse any noob mistakes......I have to say that I'm not in any way affiliated with Team DIRT, the ROM, developers, etc, just starting this as a helpful guide for myself and (perhaps) others.
I'm hoping that people will be able to add to this with specifics on apps they use that have a different 'flavor' when in Tablet Mode, particular settings used to maximize functionality, etc. To that end, here's my initial list of what I've found:
1. Calendar- when in Tablet Mode, displays multiple calendars (e.g. Weekly, with Monthly in bottom left) and lets you pick which calendars are shown without having to go to Settings to do so. I've got it in Tablet Mode with a mid-to-low DPI.
2. Gmail- in Tablet Mode, has a column of mailboxes on the left, email headers on the right, and when you click an email it takes you to that one; you use the back button to go back one 'level'. I've got it in Tablet Mode with mid-DPI density.
3. Contacts- in Tablet Mode, has a column of people on the left, tapping one brings up their information on the right. Mid-DPI works for me, not too small; bigger settings make individual contacts unusable/unreadable in Tablet Mode.
4. Settings- very useful in Tablet Mode IMO. Column of Settings on the left, clicking on one brings up sub-settings on the right. Again, mid-DPI in Tablet Mode seems to be a nice medium, for me.
5. Google Play Music- Tablet Mode makes it a sort of permanent 'Album Cover' style, as if you were to turn your phone sideways in regular Phone Mode, but all the time.
6. Maps- has a different button layout in Tablet Mode.
This is just what I've found with the apps I have; I've seen other posts for other ROMs where they've found that Google Reader has a different look, for instance, but I haven't been able to recreate it. I hope you find this useful, and look forward to additions!

I didn't even notice the new one until now that you mentioned it, and I don't have the option to uninstall update, only to uninstall the app completely. Can you please post the old version so I can have the old wall of videos too? TIA!:
Been wondering about this myself...
I have a GNex and running PA...
Others I've found:
Netflix - phoneui is just a list. tabletui allows you to scroll through titles and is more like its ps3 or pc interface.
Camera as mentioned - is a forced landscape mode with different positioning for controls.
Browser - tabletui adds visible tabs. phoneui has less 'chrome'

build.prop

i changed this line "ro.sf.lcd_density= 160" of the build.prop file in system folder and it changed my bar to the look of the xoom tablet. i changed the line ro.sf.lcd_density= 150 and it was too small and i took it back up to 160 and it looks a lil better. i didn't take it under 150 so i don't know how low and how high you can decrease and increase it to. i think i heard if you change the line i just told you about than it will tell you some apps in the market store are compatible. i know quick office pro hd works on the nexus seven but im tring to get it to show up in the Google play store so i can purchase it. is what i heard true, if so than what value should i change the line to?

But that doesn't give the tablet interface (Xoom style)
FYI - I've read (have *not* confirmed though) that if you un-install and re-install the Play store *after* resetting your DPI value, that it'll use your new dpi value accordingly, so that you can see all apps the Play store.. Again, I haven't tested - just reporting what I read...

I tried the DPI hack... and it's just that. A hack. All the apps have really small text, and layout, on basically every app. Even if you up the text size, it just doesn't look right...the layout is still too small.
The only real solution is the Hybrid rom, ParanoidAndroid. It took a while before I finally decided to try it, but I'm glad I finally did. It's the best ROM I've tried so far, and I don't think I will be able to switch to a new ROM in the future, unless it lets me set DPI for individual apps. In addition to DPI it lets you change the layout of the app. [the devs usually have 3 modes for the apps, so that it can run on a phone, tablet, or whatever..] so you can even make the Tablet UI with the default text size. Or you can put the DPI down a little, like I did, because I like the status bar a little smaller than full-size.

Hi, I'm using the PA ROM right now,and I'm just wondering what you did to get the PlayStore to allow the download. I know you can use the PA settings to change DPI and workspace so can I do it in there? Or do I have to edit the build.prop file? I bought it for the Asus Transformer TF101. I haven't been able to use it for m NExus 7 and I really do want to check it out .
A better option is to create a /data/local.prop file (rw-r--r--) with the following in it:

Hmm.... They might be using the model number to decide whether the app is compatible, so I don't think this will work, but you can try:
Open Google Play, press Home, press Recents, long-press Google Play in the list, then select Hybrid settings.
Leave the DPI alone [it should be at 213], swype over to the "Layout." In the drop down menu, select the highest value [should be 1000px, or maybe 800px]. Then tap the Apply button [left of the top-right corner].

You don't have to do anything, Google Play runs by default at stock DPI [213], so on ParanoidAndroid (unless you change it), it works out of the box.
Thanks for the help. Well I ended up trying to edit the DPI and/or the layout settings in different combinations while rebooting my tablet each time. I even changed the build.prop to see if I could download it. Nothing worked so I set it back to default/stock. Yet, when I looked online to "install" to device from the Google Play Store website, it worked for some reason. I have no idea what I did...
Anyway, on the side , since I edited the build.prop, do I need to do anything else other than reverse the changes? I switch the line back from 160 to 213. From what I searched that seems to be it...
