I have an iconia a501 with a sim card for 3g... it seems all the a500 roms have crippled telephony/apn settings etc. Id rather not get around with a great big bulbous dongle hanging out the side of my a501 waiting to get smashed to bits on a door frame as I'm walking through lol.
We clumsy people need internal 3g. Thats precisely why Acer made a501's (which unfortunately only come with android 3.0.1 which only supports keyboard through usb).. was kinda hoping i could upgrade rom for mouse/dongle/controller support through the usb, and maybe overclocking ability to atleast 1.2ghz, and not loose my internal sim card 3g support... guess I'm a little ahead of myself and the xda developers... the curse of being on the bleeding edge of technology i guess.
EDIT: btw i have no problems at all with beta testing etc if anyone is working on one, I am also a fairly accomplished pixel pusher if that person wanted help theming it.
The topic should be "not a single android 3.1 iconia 501 rom with 3g working?".
We have working 3g modems but the rom is different than yours and so far only one 3.01 rom has feen made for the 501 model.

That is QUITE a different thing than what one thinks when reading the thread title, you know? And you're asking for an A500 ROM for A501? Get an A501 ROM instead or extract the drivers from A501 ROM and use them on an A500 one. There is no point in including A501 drivers in an A500 ROM because the hardware doesn't exist there at all, you know.

I mentioned in another thread (sorry shoulda mentioned it here too) that it maybe its possible that someone create a rom update to include said drivers? Anyway, surely it wouldnt be THAT cumbersome to a 500 to have a couple of extra 501 drivers? (ive tried a few 500 roms already and they run absolutely perfectly apart from apn settings, just frustrating to be so close and stopped by a simple driver).
I solve the issue by using the portable mini wi-fi modem with my 3G broadband SIM that I have lying around. Top up the SIM and unlock the modem for free (bit of google will tell you how to do) now I use it to connect my A500 as well as missu iPad at the same time. ^ ^

What you guys are talking about is usb port working anyway, not 3G... I don't know why you think usb when you read 3g.

good idea, but when I'm carrying around a phone, a tablet, a radio, 2 sets of keys, whatever spare part I need at the time and often a coffee as well... yet another gadget is not at the top of my list of wants... especially when what we're talking about is a something as small as a single driver.
I think that someone should build a 3.1 rom with the A500 3.1 kernel (or some modified one) built with the 3G driver coming from the A501 3.0 kernel. Unfortunately I'm not able to do so...

Hello,
Are you sure about this? I ask this because when I bought mine with HC 3.0.1. it was showing cellular radio in battery usage. I wondered about that and have since found the covered sim port but cannot tell if there is contacts in there. I have been searching these forums looking for anyone who has tried to insert a sim card.

Yes. We have a few posts that include teardowns, schematics and people that opened the port. You name it we had it. The module and drivers are missing and the radio is just something that's present in 3.0.1. Most custom roms have it disabled now.

You really haven't searched either very hard, or at all. If you had, you'd have found the dozen or so threads detailing all this.
But feel free to not believe us and stick your SIM in there. Have fun taking your tab apart to get it out again.

Sticking the SIM in there doesn't really do much good for him though as you can clearly see in the take-apart pictures that there's several complete chips, capacitors and resistors missing and those exist only in the A501.. And sure, you COULD solder the missing parts there, but first you'd have to find them all somewhere, then manage to solder everything in place without shorts and without burning any adjacent components..

That's helpful FFM. No need to point me to any of those dozen or so threads either. Yes the forums are very easy to search I have been going through the A500 for hours but not enough to ask for help apparently.
Thanks Werecatf and bpivk,
I did see one teardown thread but it was for the battery. It just showed the backside of where the slot would be. It was just a thought because the radio was draining the battery before the update.

Yeah, it's not really the radio though, it's the driver that continuously tries to access the radio even though it doesn't exist. Acer didn't apparently do enough Q/A, it should have been really easy to notice the extra drain on the battery.

Which phone do you have? Why not attach a decent data plan (if you haven't got one already) and tether the phone to your tablet?
Make use of your phone and use it as your wifi modem
Thus eliminating the need for an extra device AND an extra data plan for your tablet.

My phone (htc desire) has a sim with telstra (which gives me 500mb data per month).. I have a whole other sim with optus for my tablet (4gb per month).. you seem to be suggesting that I discard my optus sim and make do with 500mb data a month... seriously it can't be THAT hard to make a simple addon for a rom which adds internal 3g support for a501...
And @ werecats original post: Yes I am aware that a500 devs wouldn't include it in an a500 rom because the hardware isn't there.. but these a500 devs would do well to have an ounce of compassion for their a501 brethren.

You're making the assumption that these devs actually HAVE an appropriate A501 ROM, with drivers etc, that they can use.
And comments like that aren't exactly going to endear you to those A500 devs either.

Does anyone know if the Moto xoom will be flashable to boost mobile or metro or cricket like how the samsung tab is
Great question. I don't know the answer but the question is can any Verizon 3G work on Sprint/Metro(same company). You don't want Cricket. My quick look makes me think the odd's aren't great. But I think the EVO was fully ported to MetroPCS.. so maybe.
I don't think a verizon phone can work on sprint and vice versa. If metro works on sprints networks then a sprint phone could be flashed to work on it. It has to do with the wireless technology in the device. Plus, even if it was the same, I doubt sprint would activate it.
Sent from my EVO using XDA App
I doubt it honestly
My research showed that in some markets Metro has a program in place for reprogramming Sprint and Verizon phones for use on their network. However, I suspect they won't do it for a product like the XOOM.
I hope that someone figures it out. I am partially hopeful, I just bought a 11,000mAh battery for my EVO so that I can tether for hours at a time. Testing it right now with everything turned on, streaming tversity video to the phone for hours and barely drained the external 30%.
I'm honestly fairly ignorant on the matter so if I sound stupid give me a pass..
But..
If the hardware could do it, isn't it 'just' a matter of which 'radio firmware' is being used? (with regards to porting to a different carrier)
Motorola Xoom
Hey everyone, hows it going. First I would like to thank everyone here for all your hard work on these new android devices and helping people like me figure out problems to how to get these devices working.
I just got back from the store where I picked up the new motorola xoom. I've noticed that its on verizons service, but would like to know if anyone can point me to the proper direction as to how I can get this device working on crickets network.
I have a droid x, droid 3 all working on cricket data, mms and all working. next task is to get this xoom working on crickets data... any idea's as to where I can start off...
I'm not finding any informaiton about this device at all for flashing. I found someone who claims that they can root there xoom, ... its a start, but not really wanting to do that without consulting the professionals first.
please note that this is not my first go around with custom roms or rooted gingerbread roms. also please note that I'm aware this rom is the hunnycomb rom.
any help is much appreciated .... sorry about the spelling and thanks for all your help in advanced.

I must have the original then, I just got finished rooting the xoom. I do have a Sim slot that has a clear card in in, just in front of the microSD slot that says "replace with 4G card after system update"
So seeing as how I got this tablet rooted.... lets see if I can get it working with data, .... any help is appreciated
Good morning everyone
I understand that the A500 model does not support 3g. I have connected my unlocked 3g dongle just to see if I get any response but no lack.
Then, one day I was playing with some widgets and one of them was the 3g on/off. I pluged in my dongle again and the dongle was powering up and was searching for signal . The blue light was flashing but not solid as could not connect to any network. I was also able to go to the APN config page but I could not see any APN (usually they are detected automaticaly)nor to add my own (I have three.co.uk plan).
I am assuming that it is possible to make 3g work but I have no idea how to do that. Are there any developers who can work on that project or have any more info or the subject? Has anyone managed to go as far as I have?
Thank you

Yes gone that far and working, use it every day on my PackardBell LibertyTab what is the exact same tablet as the A500.
Look in the dev section , there are many roms that support 3G dongle.
Build.prop needs to be altered , system/bin , system/lib , system/etc all need changes to make the 3G work.
How and what is a to long story and is beeing told on google......
But doing it on a stock non rooted rom , don't think so.
Thanks for your reply. I was pushing my luck thinking I could do that without the A500 being rooted...No rooting is available yet (3.2), so I'll wait!

No, there is no 3G chipset in A500. They're talking about a USB device with 3G chipset in it and which you plug to A500, like those that are usually sold for people with laptops and who want mobile broadband.
Okay, I was going to freak out. I really didn't think a wifi only device would have a3g radio. But thanks for clearing the mud up.

Acer iconia A500
I like this tablet even with its problems
It just seems like they made it impossible to root , reverting back is fine I suppose and searching for other roms (which may or may not be stable ,use at your own risk) !
Ive seen some of the smartest people in XDA and I cant seem to figure out why other tablets using the same updates have been rooted but not the iconia ? The writing is on the wall for this tablet , expect to see a new version soon (just in time for Christmas)!
First, wrong section; you should know better by now.
Second, just because Acer have made it a bugger to root, doesn't mean the tablet is dead. It's absolutely useable without being rooted, and 99% of consumers don't actually give a monkeys about rooting, or even know what it actually is.
Hell, we get plenty of people on here asking what it is or what it's for...
New iconia is scheduled for Dec release but may get pushed back to january.
Interesting, you are posing that on XDA. We dont believe in Impossible to Root device. That is why people come to XDA; How to break what seem unbreakable or unlock what seem unlock-able. Just give some time, some genius will always find a way to kick some Corporate teeth in.
well wasnt it acer excuse not unlock the bootloader since honeycomb was not open source. I think that was one of their statements, so once we get updated to ICS maybe we all can start with a tweet assault on them again.
Not sure about u guys but I feel more comfortable recommending the xoom or asus tab just cause they are so open, same goes for those nook colors.

You should look at the older phones like the Desire and before that if you think its hard to root here, you'd probably cry at the thought of creating a gold card.
How people complain that a rooting process that takes all of 15 minutes and a couple of reboots is hard is beyond me. In 3.1 and below all you have to do is download a file from the market. In 3.2 you have to run one update file from recovery, install the aforementioned files from the market, then flash one of the ROMs from here - such as the completely stable completely standard 3.2 ROMs, or the excellent and completely stable Thor ROMs. If that's too difficult for people then maybe they shouldn't be attempting it on something that cost them £300.

LOL - that was exactly was I was thinking after reading the first post. I have got a Desire and rooted it with goldcard etc. - long before the newer and way easier methods were developed.
Yesterday I got my Iconia 501 with Stock HC 3.2 on it and rooting it was a real breeze
Seriously? Near impossible to root? This guy must be slow, because this was just insanely easy... been rooted for months and tried nearly every rom at least once, all easy as pie.

Same thing with the original mytouch. I had to use a gold card and there were no less than 3 times during the process that i thought i had bricked it. i may be permanently scarred.
There have been many times i have rooted other devices including the iconia that i went searching for more steps because it was too easy.
ya i have the Desire S too and waited for ages for it to be rooted, the Iconia only took me a few minutes, don't really see what the difficulty is, thought this was an old thread haha

I rooted my tablet right after I got it in May. Then when the 3.2 update came out, I went back to stock unrooted and ran that way until this morning when I realized I wanted to change my navigation buttons. Downgraded, rooted, installed CWM and flashed the rooted stock 3.2 and was back in business in like 20 minutes maybe. Would've been done quicker, but I had to pause to make some more coffee. Didn't even lose any of my data or apps. I don't know how you measure easy, but by my measure, its a cake walk. A cake walk where you actually win cake, instead of awkwardly shuffling around in a circle with strangers thinking that if you win it might all be worth it, only to have some snot nosed little turd walk away with the very cake you wanted, and you go home and weep gently into your pillow because you never win, and no one ever seems to see that all you want is to be loved, oh God, why can't someone just love you...sorry I digress.
lol i rooted mine like the first 15 minutes that it was out of the box. I don't like not overclocking

Back to the OT! Did Acer Kill the Iconia?
Here it is.... Plain and simple.... Acer is killing the the Iconia since they are taking their time to produce good accessories for it. Also, what were they thinking in giving the power adapter such a short cord?
Other than that.... I love my A500, and would not mind upgrading to a the Tegra3 version.
I've done the upgrade following the directions on the post http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...cs+acer+tablet
When the device reboots it just says "Android" on the screen and you can't do anything from there. Anyone had this problem or know the solution? I couldn't find anything using search. Thank you.

Yes, indeed. I was working with a A100 that had some problems and kinda stumbled upon this. Didn't fully read. Any suggestions?
Well, it makes a nice conversation starter as a paperweight....
Seriously, your best bet is if it can reset to recovery, try an acer stock rom (the one your tab came with), otherwise jtag (haven't seen any mention of this in this forum, a lot in others) or return to Acer... It could be expensive...
Wish people would ask questions, before they did something silly.
Suppose no sense in asking if they got their UID number before they installed?
Rule #1. If ANY rom contains the file "bootloader.blob" stay away from it, until you get the right procedues.
Rule #2. ADB is your friend.
Rule #3. If you don't know what it is, or what it does, don't mess with it. Let the Dev's handle it.
No, I was actually in the middle of cooking out when I tried this. I can get it exchanged easily.

If it were an a500 leak, it wouldve been fine. But its an a100
I can't get inside the device to look at anything because it's stuck rebooting. Can't connect using adb, but thank you for the suggestions.
Basically, I have the option to trade my AT&T HTC One X for an Acer A501 and $200. Does this sound like a good deal? Sounds like a good deal to me but I don't know much about this tablet. I already have a Samsung GS3 so I don't really need the phone. The A501 is factory out of the box. Does the A501 use all the same rooting methods and stuff as the A500? Is there anything that would prevent me from being able to root this tablet and flash ROMs on it?
Thanks for any insight that can be provided

No Problem Mate.
Sounds like a fair trade to me. The 501 is a pretty good tab. If it's brand new out of the box. What I would make sure of though, is that it's not one of the ATT 501's where you are locked into their network. It's almost impossible to get ATT to unlock the device. And, there is currently no way to unlock it via hacks. You would be stuck with ATT for data access.
As far as rooting and installing roms, it can be done. But be advised, as with all rooting and flashing bootloaders, there is risk involved.
Yes, it is virtually identical to the 500 (except GSM and GPS), so what you can use on one, you can use on the other.

Thanks for the info. I'm not really concerned with the mobile data part of it. I'll more than likely just use it on wifi. Yeah, I know all about the risks involved, this isn't my first rodeo, so to speak. I just didn't know if there was some of the tablets that weren't rootable or something. Thanks very much for the info. I'm getting it today, but I decided to keep my One X and trade my GS3 for the A501 and $300. I'm pretty happy with the deal.

Sounds sweet. Not a bad trade.
You need some help rooting and such, drop a pm. Will be glad to help.
Note that my PC is under repair and reformatting, so will be a couple more days till I am at 100%. Other than that, there are some pretty good folks in this forum. So am confident they will help. Except FFM , floating fat man. Yeah he's OK and a good mate. Just tolerate him. And he will steer you on the right path. FFM will read this, and if he doesn't reply, I will be offended.......

Thanks man, I appreciate it. I'll be on here looking for methods for rooting because I know the A501 is completely stock. I may send ya a PM if I run into any issues. I actually ended up selling my GS3 instead. I actually like the One X better and I'm getting $300 and the A501 for my GS3. The A501 has a little damage to one corner of it but I've seen it in action and all seems good. He's even going to let me swap back if something is acting screwy with the A501 within a couple of weeks. Seems like a straight up guy so I'm sure it's fine.
Since I know it's stock, I should plan on using this tool, correct?

Your only chance to Sim unlock the ATT version of the tablet, is to first email Acer Support, then e-mail ATT technical support, and explain your situation. Explain that you live in a different country and that ATT service is not available, and you didn't know 3g wouldn't work on non-ATT Networks when you bought it.
You should always include your Tablet Serial number AND your IMEI number with EVERY communication. You will find this either on the Factory box, and also on the SIM/SD cover of the tablet.
Eventually, ATT will hopefully give you the unlock code. Each code is different and based on the IMEI number.
You may have to e-mail them several times. Always remember, BE POLITE in your mails. And go to a higher supervisor if needed. Hopefully they will understand the situation and give you the unlock code.
This method has worked for a few other people who bought the ATT/Rogers a501,but live in other countries.
