What program/script is the best option for converting my high profile mkv's to a usable format on my xoom. I'm not really interested in 1:1 quality as I think 720p is overkill for the 10" screen. I'm just interested in a quick and painless method that will also allow me do batches because I have quite a few films to do.
Thanks,
i tried looking around for conversion apps and i only found one. Its called MyView(on the market). I didnt get a chance to test it out yet tho. And if that doesnt work you can play .mkv's from the rockplayer app(its my personal favorite). I hope that helped

Definitely Badaboom. It's really fast for me and I only have an 8800gt, newer cards should be even better. There is a preset for the Xoom and even a batch processing mode.

Try Mobo Player. Also, Atrix hasn't had 1080p update from Moto, so if your videos are 1080p they likely won't play if I am thinking correctly.

I believe your attempting to play baseline or highline x264. Unfortunately our nvidea chip will not run that. But, I'm not sure if it is a problem that can be fixed through software. Anyone?

i have done some research on this matter, yes the tegra chip won't play any high profile x264 HD movie (either 720p or 1080p). you have to convert it to main profile x264 and it will play fine.
u can try "handbrake" to convert it and our beloved Atrix will play. you can make a google search to see the tutorial for converting using "handbrake"

The best player for atrix is moboplayer with codec pack.
I can play most of my movies without problems in HD but I have great news for HD mkv viewer.
Power DVD are developing a application which can play HD mkv movies and more.

I normally convert it to fit it into the Fat32 file size limit at about 3.8Gb, my collection usually comes from a 15-25gb source.
I have a TF101 my own and I used the same preset which use High Profile to try to convert the video for my SGSII, but I found that it wasn't playing with hard-decoding, even though the SGSII plays it smoothly, but I guess if I throw in something which can be hard-decoded, it would burn less battery, right? (right now without hard-decoding, it's burning 1% in around 2~3 mins)

Another thing you could do which some people have tried is to change the file extension to mp4, which will play with the native player. I think DivX is just a 'container' format which contains MP4 video so it should work in theory, although I haven't tried this on my TF myself.

plenty of players out there for DIVX/XVID. I think some manufacturers just bundle extra players or codecs. i dont think support is in 'native' Android.

1080p video encoded using the DivX (or XviD) codec is really inefficient. It's going to be a lot larger file size or of lower quality than a more modern codec like h.264. If you'd like to play 1080p video on your transformer, you'd be best to transcode your video to an h.264 video stream. Not only will the file size be much smaller, but it will play back using hardware acceleration which is much more likely to be smooth than software rendered DivX.
Rockplayer, Moboplayer, etc are all the same thing. They're just containers for ffmpeg--which is the best free software decoder available. Pick the one that has the best interface and is free. Paying for any of these is actually against the law, and while you're not going to get in any trouble, it's stupid to pay for something that should be free.

If it's anything like the a500 - it will not play avi in the stock installed video player.
However, you can use one of many alternative players that will be able to software decode the file. I love and recommend MX player, it's free, and it has great options as well as a nice feel to the player. Rockplayer also works for many things, but I find the watermark the free version puts on the screen pretty annoying would have paid for it if I had not stumbled upon mx player
Acer a100 has 1024MB of ram on board - also found some specs for it showing 528, no idea how that got started.
Thank you .... Strange why it wont play avi on stock player must be a android 3.2 thing cos on my Samsung s2 that plays avi files straight through the video player
Can you tell me if real player is available and works on the a500 ? I use this on my s2 and hope it will on my new tab when it arrives
Thanks in advance

I've tried VLC media player to rip some of my old movies I have, but I can't seem to find the ideal settings. I rip on the preset "Video for android sd high" but the movie still wont transfer over without my phone wanting to convert it again when I transfer. Then after it does, my 2 hour movie takes up 1.4 gb, and that seems to high. Any recommendations on a more efficient setting or maybe if I should transfer directly to the SD card and reinsert it into the phone? Thanks
Try a program called "Handbrake". I've used it rip my DVD collection and I set it to encode on a "universal" setting, ends up being in .m4v format and my phone plays it fine. I'd say that's a normal size (at least what I've experienced) for a 2 hour movie.

Not sure if this is even an issue here... your 1.4GB file for a 2 hour movie at 1080p sounds exactly right... The 700MB file you mentioned sounds right for the same movie in 720p... are you checking these files after loading them on your phone to see what resolution they are? I've never seen one of my movies at 1080p turn out smaller than 1.+GB... even recording with the camera for that long turns out that big at 1080p...

If you convert DVD of the VOB format to any other formats, the quality will be lossy. But if you just rip DVD to VOB format which if of the same format as DVD, the original video format will be kept maximally as there is no re-encoding process. Also some software allow you to convert DVD to HD format. I think the output quality will be good.
