Bettery Temp (Wifi Tether + Charging) - Epic 4G General

Hey All,
So this summer I'm traveling a lot and will need to work from the road (thanks for driving fiance!). To do this, I have my laptop connected to my Epic's wifi tether for hours and hours at a time. To keep my phone from draining, I'm keeping it plugged in to the car charger.
This raises a couple concerns that I hope you guys can comment on.
1. Having something like wifi tether draining my phone while at the same time charging for long periods of time seems like it's going to kick my batteries ass (regardless of temp). I'm somewhat concerned this will kill the lifespan of my Epic's battery (as it's my understanding they aren't supposed to be drained/charged in this way). My laptop battery experienced a premature death from this; leaving it plugged in overnight while downloading too many times (should have popped the battery out). Of course heat could have been the culprit in that case...
2. What's the max temp I should have my phone running over long periods of time. I know heat kills batteries faster than anything...right now after an hour or so of charging/wifi tether I'm holding at 44c.
Thanks for the info guys. I might end up using usb tether if the above are cause for concern.

Im also wondering this. My car has no a/c and when my phone is overclocked and playing music it gets pretty hot. And when I tether/charge it can get to 45c. Sometimes when I tether for long periods I put my phone on an ice pack wrapped in a cloth. It drops it to low/mid 30c.

One of the great things about the Galaxy S phone is the interchangeable battery. You could replace your battery when it seems worn, or you could buy a cheap battery and put it in when you're going to be tethering.

Just keeping my phone open seemed to make a huge difference while doing this. (Which makes sense, since you're basically doubling the surface area exposed.)
Made it go from rebooting-hot to barely hotter than moderate usage.

Combine this with a removed battery cover and you should be solid.

Have you tried PDAnet? Wired tether keeps your phone a lot cooler and it consumes less battery and actually charges your phone from your laptop

There's a USB Tether as well. I don't remember the name, but you can probably look it up. There are free versions so you wouldn't have to pay for PDAnet.
The issue with a USB tether is that you don't get the current that you normally would if you were plugged into the wall, or your car, which means you may not get enough power.
Some chargers don't work correctly, so the phone still thinks you're plugged into your computer and it doesn't draw as much current. The way you can tell is if you plug your charger in, and it asks you what you want to do, it won't draw as much current, and it will take much longer to charge.

I know what you are saying op, as for me I keep my epic on a "a/c vent mount" to keep the temp down while on the road.

Since google introduced voice calling in Gmail, I haven't been using my phone too much xcept for reading engadget/gizmodo/lifehacker/bgr blogs and browsing xda in bed for an hour or two just before going to sleep. Occasionally I would watch one anime episode (or more, depending on my mood) using VLC Stream & Convert as well. This is what I'm getting:

Now I can finally say that HTC Evo is officially better than my old Touch Pro in every way possible. Previously TP would last only ~24hrs, even if wasn't using it at all. Evo on the other hand will last for days when its "sleeping". Android's power management at its best
PS: under constant use the battery life is a completely different story. Max LCD brightness w/out timeout + stream DI.fm w/ XiiaLive wasted the battery in just 3:55 . So the conclusion we can draw here is, if you want long battery life - don't use the phone

61 hours, well that's not bad, i have that beat with over 72 hours, lol, and your right to get it to last that long you have to pretty much use it alot less then normal.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780583
i went 3 days 12 hours and 46 minutes on a single charge, that is with using the stock battery and a regular wall charger, yes i'm rooted and i used setcpu to set my frequency to 614 when screen on, and 245 when screen off, at night when i go to sleep i put the phone into airplane mode, and overall usage was cut back to light to moderate usage, i was trying to see how long i could actually go on the stock battery, and i must admit i'm very impressed.

did you use OEM battery or an aftermarket/extended one? mine was the 1500mAh OEM that came with the phone. also, i didnt use airplance mode so maybe that's why i could reach 3-day battery life...

that was on the factory battery, i have a extended one that i'm going to try this on next time i drain the battery low, so i can start fresh over again and see how long i can go then, lol.

Wifi makes a difference.

After all this time of having a screwed up Wifi I realize it was the router. Once I got a new router I'm sitting on 19 hours with 39% left. I know some people have better battery life than that but I'm impressed. Btw im running myn's warm 2.2 with kings#11 kernal. It's awesome and fast

That's about right for battery life then. I don't think you can do much better.
im convinced the only thing that kernels/roms can help mitigate is usage burn, radio burn (no signal) is going to drain a battery no matter what. I keep my phone on wifi at my house and get great battery life. At work, when the phone is on 3G and not getting any signal the battery dies wicked fast. between 730 and 1030 today my battery dropped from 85% to 25%. Ive also had my battery die in 3 hours flat because of no signal.
yea, I forget where i read it, (i think when i used to go to ppcgeeks forums) but there was actually a lengthy detailed rundown of real world usage of 3G vs wifi, and wifi definately draws less power.

I took this from my first post on battery life. I wish it could be better cause I realize I barely used the phone during the 22hrs. Half of it was sleep and only ten minutes in a call and some YouTube videos. Also some music with PowerAMP.

After experimenting I have found out that instead of putting it in airplane mode you could just turn off 3g and it last quite a bit(at work). I only turn it on during break time. Leaving 3g makes me be lucky to leave work in double digit battery power.

I second this. Pretty much don't use 3G, and sure as heck not 4G, if you don't have to. My battery will literally stand for hours at a certain percent with 3G off and screen off. I don't have a WiFi router yet but seriously thinking about getting one just for use when I'm at home.
You should do it! Lol it is good for many things not just the EVO. Ya know laptops iPod touches and stuff lol.

230c sometimes the BGA ICs fall off and I have to open the phone and reball the ICs and flow them back into place
I got my first SGS2 and it was really getting hot especially when streaming movies or playing games etc..i could not touch the back portion where the camera lense was. That phone had a 3g connectivity issue..so i had to return it..anyway while waiting for my usb jig to arrive..i bought another SGS2... using it the same way like my first phone, it never got hot till now..even playing games or streaming movies..it only gets warm and when i checked the battery temp..always showing about 36 to 38 degrees. On first phone, my record temp was 49 degrees and maybe it could have gone higher if i did not shut the phone down and cool it..

Got it to 45C tops, when playing heavy games continuously.
It goes upto 45 for me as well. I felt it very hot just once on the second day after I got it where I feel it went above 45. After that I've been using a cover so I dont notice the heat much and since that its never gone aove 40. Its better if you install some temperature app to monitor. Battery circle is good as it gives the temperature as well as the battery percentage remaining.
The reason it heats up so much is because there is very little gap between the components and the phones body since its very thin so the heat gets transferred directly. But it cools down pretty easily.
Sometimes it could also be because of an app- in my case it was twitter. I login only with Wi-Fi and I have disable data so it kept trying to connect and that heated up the phone. After that experience, I always turn it off after I disconnect from Wi-Fi.
My phone get's VERY hot, will also crash and a yet to be unmentioned thing, is that if I turn it off an hour or so it feels the need to automatically turn itself on again. Anyhow I will be getting a replacement of the phone selling it as brand new and be getting a new different phone.

My phone used to get hot initially when i used to use stock kernels... Then I flashed insecure kernels...one thing I noticed that when I flashed Chainfire's kernel, the phone tries to stay at an optimum cpu frequency even while playing games on it...I tested this using cpu spy... I found the phone rarely used 1200 Mhz frequency but still felt buttery smooth... when the phone constantly stays at 1200 Mhz, then cpu heats up, but when it is at 800 Mhz, it never heated up even with the heaviest usage... and ya, my phone is not under/overclocked
mine doesn't get tooo hot unless i've overclocked it or something, have a go at undervolting it, look at tekrak's overclock guide in android development for advice on that
it should help temperature problems, i hardly get them
I've done the air condition trick after it got too hot twice. But I had a doubt as to whether the sudden heating and cooling will have a damage on the phone and so stopped that. Now I just wait for it to cool down.
I've got it up to 55°, playing order & chaos over wi-fi, max brightness and connected to my charger supply.
Connecting it to the charger itself heats it up a lot so I can imagine what will happen over wifi with heavy gaming

Didn't it damage your phone?
Got this phone just yesterday. Highest temps i've had so far while gaming over WiFi and charging: +39C CPU, +42C battery. Before launching any game i take the phone out of protective case and set CPU to 200-800MHz.
The only problem so far is Pocket Legends that freezes every few minutes. I found the thread about it here on XDA and on official website. This game was the main reason why i bought this phone. Wanted to play it on high-quality, large screen... Sigh

***having problems with tf not turning on or faulty charger? Read this

So im seen alot of q's asked about "epad wont turn on" or "charger broke"
Just to let people no 9 times out of ten when you tf wont turn on people tend to think its finished and say there good byes. But a member here has said that theres a problem with the cargers and that putting it in a zip tie bag and putting it into the freezer for 30mins will help.. supposedly the boxy part of the charger has heat sensers and there reading the wrong temperatures so thats the idea of the freezer..
Some user said this helped there heat issue too.
*make sure it a zip tie bag/air tight bag to keep moisture out..
If people whos pad still wont turn on plug it into a laptop/computer to allow a slow charge for approximately 3 hrs and see results
Last resort is to buy a new charger with specifications of output values of 15v/5v
Charging at 1.2A/2A

The question should be.....
What is classed as overheating?
This has happened to me in the past, and its actually a really simple problem.
More often than not, melted charger connectors are a direct result from charging a device like this with the connector loose, crooked, or not fully inserted.
Our transformers require bit more power than a standard USB connector can provide. As such, the charger connector has a redundant pins for power, to spread the current flow over more than one contact point. This reduces the current flowing though each individual tiny contact point, which is supplied by a tiny wire, and thus keeps the temperature in check. If one contact isn't able to make connection due to a loose connector, crooked or incomplete insertion, more current has to flow through the other contact points which basically begins to overheat.
This problem isn't just related to chargers and things like that. Any devices which you contact points and flow a reasonable amount of current can do this. I've had it happen to a friend who didn't properly seat the DIMMs on his motherboard, and basically overheated some power leads on his DIMM sockets:

nice! I had the same problem, my TF was not charging anymore. I took the charger out of the wall-outlet and let it lie on the ground for a whole day. The day after that one I tried the charger again and it worked again!
Thanks for this nice and helpful information!
This actually falls more under general and useful information than Q&A, so I am moving this to the correct area. Thanks OP for writing this.

Wireless charging issues?

I purchased a charger from a local company here in Australia. We really don't have much option over here as most companies won't ship to here. They tested them out and they worked (I trust the company as I know one of the owners).
Problem is that it mostly only charges to around 88% and peaked out here and stays attempting to charge, but not charging just getting hotter and hotter. So far max was 58deg I think. It has charged to 100% twice only, and I have had them for 2 weeks. These 2 times it perfectly charged to 100,stopped charging and cooled down.. Perfect.
A few others have had issues as well but the suppliers say it works fine for them.
Has anyone had any issues at all like this using wireless charging? We are really trying to get to the bottom of this and trying to figure out if it's a phone issue or a charger issue.
I have tried it with any and all stock and custom roms, both totally clean and with apps installed.
I have attached my battery graphs here in case that helps solve the problem.

We noticed there was quite a few bad remarks about the lg one on Amazon so thought I would ask here.
So, anyone else have issues with inconsistent wireless charging of nexus 4?
Thanks.

I'm having the same issues as well with this Wireless Charger I purchased off eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/221166419716
For the first 2 weeks it was charging without issue. Charged the phone up to 98/99% and then switched on and off to maintain that charge, and the phone did not get very hot.
For the past few days it has only been able to charge up to 90% and will not go any higher, but the phone gets very hot and stays like that (45C). Plugging the phone into a USB charger gets it up to 100% so it can't be that the battery maximum has been reached.
Would be interested to know what type of Qi Charger you have to see if it's a problem with a certain 'type'.
Mine isn't that one. It's no brand at all. The guys who imported them tell me they tested some, including that you bought and they say that one was intermittent.
I recently purchased http://www.fasttech.com/products/1154/10001946/1142301 and this works perfectly so far... But then it's only been a couple days...
I am putting it down to a hardware revision 10 issue where it is not perfectly qi compliant. The newer ones are supposedly rev 12 which are qi compliant.... And hopefully they work fine with it so I can sell them to my friends who all bought an n4 today (5 at work in a smallish Xray dept)...
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
Is this the hardware revision on the phone, or do you mean the rev of the charging device?
As mine evidenced, even if it works perfectly for a while, it could still not be an indication that the qi charging will keep working.
I'll probably just stick with my one until the 'official' one is released. Was a little worried that the temperature staying around 45C for extended periods of time could have a negative effect on the battery or phone components however.
Kind of a necro post but my N4 on the official charger will top out at 88% as well sometimes, then flap between charging and discharging like the phone thinks its full and is trickle charging. If I plug it in and get it to 90%, then go back to the orb, it goes to 100% just fine.
Sent from my SCH-I605 using Tapatalk 4
Double necro but I have this exact same issue and can't seem to get it to work. Anyone figured it out?

After a few months, mine would do the same thing. For some reason the "efficiency" of the N4 charging circuit (inside the phone) became somehow worse.
The DT-900 uses a TI bq500410A chip for control of the charging. If it detects too low of efficiency it will cut off. Luckily it's possible to modify this threshold. By removing the resistor connected to pin 43 of the TI chip it allows it to charge regardless of efficiency. It still has temperature protection so I don't think there is any danger.

Well, that type of mod is waaay over my head, but at least that answers the question. Thanks!
Just to add some information to this thread, I have the new Google Wireless Charger and it does the same thing. It charges to 80% and then just plateaus there, getting quite warm, but not hot, to the touch. Strange.
