Verizon is also a much larger company.
Yes, Moto/Verizon do a great job..
If they r not using CDMA, I will definitely use Verizon and choose Moto..

This is why t-mobile should tell manufacturers they only want vanilla android phones. They would get updates faster AND they wouldn't need to modify them before release. It would bee cheaper for them and it would make customers happy.

That's all fine and wonderful, but the Galaxy S wasn't Vanilla on any of the four major US carriers so that doesn't really matter here does it?

If I remember correctly, the Droid X, Vibrant, and Captivate had release dates that were within a week or two from each other.
Either way, it's pretty sad news to hear the Spain division of Samsung is now claiming the Froyo release to happen around "late October." I wonder what's really going to happen when late October rolls around...."late November?"

It would hardly make customers happy. If T-Mobile were to deny every handset with a custom UI, they would have what, 2 Android phones? Maybe 3 since 2008?
T-Mobile has been ragged on in the past for being the carrier that never steps up to the plate to offer the latest and greatest phones. They are now starting to come out of that with all of these new Android phones and eventually later this year, Windows Phone 7. Why would they regress?
I think he is just trying to say that if T-Mobile insisted that devices be loaded with Vanilla Android than we could get updates faster, not to deny any of the handsets, just tell Samsung, "Hey, our Galaxy S phone needs to be Vanilla Android, Thanks"
So we would still get the killer phones, but with Vanilla Android rather than a custom Android that needs further development after Vanilla is released. (The Plausibility as to the phone manufacturers actually saying "Okay, no problem!" is debatable but I do believe that is what he is getting at.)

Actually, the Galaxy S OS has never been Vanila. It is modified and locked first by Samsung, then modified again at the behest of the US carriers.
It's basically a mess.
That's why it will take ages to update.
The whole Android open-source idea is being destroyed by both carriers and manufacturers, who modify it enough to be able to lock it and prevent software upgrades, so they can sell the next hardware version to the suckers.

I've been seeing this opinion more and more and it makes me sad to think that the beautiful (yet idealistic) concept of Android is being corrupted. The OS being fragmented between devices and manufacturers bogging down amazing hardware with unnecessary crap has the potential to seriously harm Android imo.

In the traditional sense, you are correct. However, Samsung has taken a different approach in regards to their Android offerings. I would hazard to say that it isn't actually "locked" by Samsung, as you put it. Maybe a little by T-Mobile.
However, Samsung has made it clear that they are supporting the development community. The source code for each US variant is available as a free download on their website. Rooting the device was intentionally left open by Samsung (although T-Mobile might lock it via updates). The carrier unlock codes are blatantly available on the device if you know where to look, and there is even an app that will give it to you for free with no effort. They have opened up multiple channels for support (Twitter, Facebook, phone, website) for it's users and even respond to development questions. I've even seen a couple of reports of Samsung support helping people out who have bricked devices.
In a sense, Samsung has become the most open Android handset manufacturer. Doesn't sound to me that Samsung has gone to great lengths to "lock" the Galaxy S out of development, as you put it.
I've read it a few times before about Froyo for the Vibrant not coming until the G2 is released, which isn't too far away. But then "rumor"(i know, rumors aren't always true), Samsung will release a Galaxy Slider phone and skip 2.2 for the Vibrant and push everyone to G2 or the new Galaxy phone.. I hope this isn't the case.
I think tmobile will release froyo after they see how the g2 does on the market... Because the vibrant is a beast without it, so just imagine what it will be like with it. The g2 might not do that great with vibrant running froyo... Imo

Two very different phones. G2 is going to be the next dev phone. Vanilla android. It will get the updates first. It will likely run MUCH faster than it's specs would indicate (see G1) because it will be optimized. Also, it has a keyboard.
Vibrant has a Samsung SAMOLED display and, currently, the fasted GPU out.
There may be fewer people who jump to the G2 from a Vibrant if it got Froyo now, but I cannot imagine it would impact those who don't have a Vibrant now. The majority of users really couldn't tell the difference, and many T-mobile sales reps in the stores wouldn't be able to inform them. The 1% of the Android community that comes here doesn't mean anything to T-mobile especially since these are likely the same people who optimize their bills to pay the least amount possible.

I thought I read that Google was removing the ability (or restricting?) to customize Gingerbread when they release it, basically unifying the device platform across the board so if you had 3.0 or greater, it was all the same vanilla android without custom carrier and/or device modifications. If that is the case, than obviously even Google has seen the butchery of their original concept and are looking to rectify it. (End User's would still be able to mod the hell out of it I'm sure, but they wouldn't allow device Manufacturers and carriers to modify the OS right from the get go).
I could be wrong, I have read a lot of stuff lately lol...

The devs for MS market place are facing big hurdles getting their apps up because MS has a final say what gets publish and what doesn't. There is no "jailbreak" or "root" concept either, so you are stuck with whatever guys in Redmond decided is good for you.

I'm on a Vibrant, I had a HTC Touch Diamond (WM 6). Windows 7 is going to be such a huge improvement from 6. If you haven't watched the demo videos for 7, go look at em. Dont get me wrong, I love my Vibrant, but don't hate on it till you've taken a good look. The UI looks pretty kick ass in my opinion but I think W7 is designed for a different crowd of people from what you find on the XDA forums judging by their commercials.

The one thing you will miss from moving to WP7 is the community. I am sure a new community will grow around the phone is no time just like Android did when G1 was release, and when root was found, the community boomed. Same thing happened with iPhone and jailbreaking, it's just matter of time.
I say wait a while and see, if it is good, jump ship, if not you can always stay with Android.
Actually the community for windows is there. I first found xda developers when I was looking for mods for my MDA that was years before android dropped. Look over in some of the windows forums they are there. Its just that windows got stale, other than a couple HTC skins WM has been nearly the same since 2003. They really just updated it to work better with new hardware.
I'm sure WM7 will bring a little fire back. I'd like to try it out. My first smartphone was a Wm phone, and there are things I still miss like the contacts a Calender.

i love the android OS. i love my vibrant. i just thought about how cool it would to be to dual boot with wp7. i didn't think about licensing though. i forgot that windows mobile isn't open source like android is, so it'll be harder, if even possible to get windows on an android device! but it's ok to wish. maybe in the future i'll get a wp7 phone. then dual boot with android on that. or keep my vibrant and have the best of both worlds. i should wait anyway to see how wp7 turns out, but i really like the involvement of xbox live and zune! i do have to say, even if wp7 is amazing, it's going to be hard to catch up with android. i can see this is going to be just like the pc world. android(linux) vs. iOS(apple) vs WP7(Windows). andbody see a trend?

I don't think sammy is the blame for software support on this phone. To me it seams they have tried but tmobile has gotten in the way. The phone has had a couple updates already granted they were relatively minor but they addressed major issues that people complained about. Bettter modems for better signal for one. They released an app to fix the gps. Which has worked for me multiple times(if it haven't for you have you tried deleting gps data first).
They have tried to release updates on their own through mini kies that tmobile told people not to use. There seams to always be a release on samsungfirmwares.com that isn't a final but provides parts needed for custom roms. They made the phone rediculously easy to mod even provided a way to fix your phone if you brick it. And it doesn't void your warranty if you take it apart because there isn't any warranty stickers.
What more do you want from them? They have tried to support the community the best they can without Tmobile interferance. They have to go through testing before they release to the public but to me it looks like they are trying.
That said I bet the sgs 2's, will be almost identical hardware wise on all the networks. Because I bet all of these very different variations of the same phone is giving them the flux.

@ fuman lack of support and getting froyo are too separate things. They are supporting the device. Besides you don't know the politics behind their agreement with google. They may not have as large of a team as htc or Motorola has on developement, they might have a contract with the networks not to release it. Maybe they ding get as much support from google that htc or moto has. There is a loft of things that can be holding them up, but support we do have. Look at how long it took other devices took to get cupcake after it came out.

I disagree, I think OS updates are equivalent to continued support for the device, and the GPS fixes have been hit or miss for people so there are still major issues that are unresolved. I can understand Samsung not having the development or experience with Android that Motorola and HTC have, but I haven't seen anything that would put the blame on T-Mobile more so then Samsung. I don't really put any blame on T-Mobile for anything Vibrant related at the moment.

lol Facebook just updated the Facebook app on android today and it's good. haha it answered my wishlist.
Quad core, 2GB ram, 5 inch MEGASUPERAMOLED display, bluray optical drive, and IceCream (after honeycomb?) OS.
Seriously though. I'd want: No lag, fully functioning GPS, Xenon flash, top unlock button, dedicated camera button, micro usb port on the side next to an HDMI out, 3.5mm on top, more dedicated memory onboard 768MB or 1GB, slightly faster cpu (current cpu is super fast) and a less plasticky finish (more HTC like). I think most of those changes would be easy to implement. I think I basically listed every feature in most upcoming android "super phones".
Support and kept promises from Samsung... that's it. It is what I thought I was buying in the first place.

None of what you said makes sene.
Android is a tech geek-heavy community (the fanbois, at least).
Samsung has the hardware to differentiate itself outside of defacing android.
If they would have just released a Stock Android phone with their hardware, and ensured a fast update turnaround, they probably would have sold more phones than they did.
And they would not have needed such a large software development team.
Galaxy S phones becasue of the hardware, not because of the software, and many people would not have brought them in the US if they had known the update would have taken so ****ing long to materialize. Samsung was talking about updating to FroYo before the Euro Galaxy S was even launched (at their event).
They should be embarassed. Probably the biggest let down of 2010.
Also, an Android phone doesn't need 768 MB RAM. 512 is fine. The issue is our phones don't have 512 RAM accessible to applications to begin with. It has about as much App-Accessible RAM as a cheap mid-ranged Android device...
That being said, unless I pony up for a WP7 device, I'm getting a new notebook (not a netbook, a notebook). I'm not seeing how these phones are worth what they sell for. Unlike computers, a bad phone purchase is hardly salvageable...
Designing a phone isn't as monumental as some make it out to be, unless the manufacturer is just starting out. Much of the groundwork has been done by them in the past and they can simply make new phones by differing in the chasis if possible, and very few components... How do you tihnk Samsung managed 4 different Galaxy S phones for every carrier here? It certainly didn't take them a year or more to branch them out from the i9k, that's for sure...
just come from iphone and HTC sensation
both excellent but I wanted to go back to windows phone (had a HTC HD7 before) but with a keyboard
I must say this is the best phone I have ever had
The construction is beautiful, the keyboard is the best I have ever used (=BB), its lighteningly quick, the IE browser is better then webkit (I can enter some forms in ebay and on forums that I could never do on iphone), the AMOLED screen is super sharp and marketplace is full enough for me (flight control & angry birds ).
The latest version of WP7 is also super smooth.
I really hope that Dell brings out a non-keyboard version (as this is more popular) and markets these hard to service providers come mango.
Dell showed it could make great handheld hardware with the old Axim range, and now the venue pro.
I really hope Dell make a success of their smartphone business, they really deserve to!
I strongly recommend this phone to people that want a beautiful phone with keyboard.
Especially as Dell is occasionally doing various forms of discounts on these now.
I saw DELL myself too and it's really manufactured much much better than HTC HD7 whitch I own :-(
Btw, no new DELL leakage in WP Bench app, but others are leaking hard. I'm looking forward for new Nokia and Samsung phones.
yes, something like the Nokia N8 hardware with a faster cpu and WP7 software would be awesome
I hope the Nokia/WP7 link up takes off
Nokia has always had the best cameras and phone call quality!

On your phone, go to 'settings' -> 'about' -> 'more information'.
Firmware revision number should end in .212. If not, plug your phone into your PC and launch the Zune software.
The latest firmware fixed several problems, especially instability with wifi enabled. If you haven't had any problems with your phone, I would guess you already have the latest firmware

I really hope Dell make a success of their smartphone business, they really deserve to!
I strongly recommend these phones to people that want a beautiful phone with keyboard. Especially as Dell is occasionally doing various forms of discounts on these now.

They actually did sell a version without a keyboard. It was called the 'Dell Venue' and was running Android, not WP7. Don't think it sold very well and the forum isn't very active.

I agree - for a phone with a keyboard, I can't think of anything better at the moment.
Not sure what Dell is doing about their smartphone business. According to leaked roadmaps, there was supposed to be a new version of the Venue Pro codenamed "Wrigley". Not sure if it is abandoned or still being developed.
Dell seems to have had a lot of problems with the firmware on the phone, which apparently was outsourced. Caused a lot of problems with stability / wifi in the past and according to the threads on this forum, the firmware is not elegantly written. (The stability problems were solved by the most recent firmware update.)

I saw DELL myself too and it's really manufactured much much better than HTC HD7 whitch I own :-(
Btw, no new DELL leakage in WP Bench app, but others are leaking hard. I'm looking forward for new Nokia and Samsung phones.

I CAN tell you though that Mango does work on DVP. I've updated a device one of my friends had to it. It's smooth... but VERY unfortunate that it was one of the DVPs that got the Invalid Sim error after doing an initial update from Dell.. blah

I was talking about a WP7 phone.
I predict big growth in 2012 and 2013 for WP7, driven by mango and Nokia, and Dell has a chance to be part of that.
I like Android, but after usage of Android, BB, iphone and WP7, I prefer WP7.
althought I think iOS 5 (when it is released) will be a close second to Mango
Given Dell's track record launching both the Streak and the DVP, I'm not so sure we will be seeing any new phones from them in the future. Both of those launches were unmitigated disasters and made Dell look like clueless fools. The sad part is that they both turned out to be really nice phones that never sold a lick. I have to think they are taking a long hard look at whether they even want to be in the handset hardware business anymore.

the key thing with a handset is to get it to providers.
Dell have done so with tmobile in the us but not in Europe
Its a simple thing to rectify
As I said before, whilst there are people who buy keyboard mobiles, the majority of people don't want a keyboard, which is why Dell need more non-keyboard wp7 models, of which they have none.
The HTC desire z and hd7 pro also did miserably but HTC has decided to keep going with keyboard phones.
Lastly I wouldn't compare to the streak. 5" is too big for a phone and too small for a tablet.

not what I mean
I mean a mango specific device
trust me, if a mango specific device was coming, I would sorta know about it.
Time for some speculations! What is 2012 gonna bring for our beloved HD2? Do you think we will get the camera working on ICS? What new features will be introduced with Android Jelly Bean and will we get a functional port?
Are our awesome devs possibly even gonna port further OSs?
Or are you guys planning to replace your HD2 with quadcore smartphones hitting the market next year? Voice your opinion here and have a Happy New Year!

I definitely think we'll have the camera working in ICS but then surely it has to be the end of the line. I've already moved on to the Galaxy Nexus which seems to be attracting lots of development work.

quote/thanked you
WP7.5 with touchscreen working in 2012
camera working properly in WP7 and ICS
At the moment it is difficult to "upgrade"
The samsung Note looks nice though
How about the mysterious magldr 2.00? I think now its a canned project with too many of the small bugs not worth the extra legwork. And it sounds like dft has had enough with whats been going on elsewhere.
I think that the developers will allow us to keep the HTC HD2 for at least six month yet.
The galaxy Note is superb!

Certainly, but the HTC HD2, in performance, does not have anything to envy.
I've been ready for an update since like May, 2011, but there is nothing I see worth me committing 2 more years without me leaving T-Mobile. I'm digging the RAZR, but I don't want to leave T-Mobile, I'm also looking at what WP7 does this year.
By the way, we're just two days into 2012, and we already have ICS WITH CAMERA !!!
Here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1417472 (only pictures, no video "yet!")
And we have another big thing to anticipate in the coming days/weeks
Hopefully WP7 can come already unlocked with activation keys no more chatting with Microsoft for HD7 keys.....

I'd love for more developers to do SD versions of WP7 and Android.
OR find some way to dual-boot WM6 and anything else. WM6 is very efficient for what I like to do and I don't want to leave it yet.
The Opera browser is awesome in WM6. I never have to hit any physical buttons and it retains all my tabs even if I do lots of other things. In Android it just closes my browser if I start doing other things and I have to reload all my tabs..
I hope w 8 Release
I found after moving to the Galaxy S2 that the HD2 especially when running cm7 is still more than enough for everyday use and I would quite happily pinch it back off of my missus lol. However if you like to game I found that the Adreno 200 is far to weak in 2011/12, even the more basic games can struggle to perform well e.g Random Mahjong etc. I can see it definitely running ICS quite well and getting some love from that department after that not so sure... No Windows 8 for sure lol.
I quite like the look of he Galaxy Note, but I'm not sure that I'm ready to move away from sense yet :/
with a OCd Processor
Until the loud ear peice volume is fixed, I don't see the attarction
technically the phone will be fine until its fully run ICS update, so i think that the future half of the 2012 will be well lived by Leo's
and if it runs well (like any 3.5 ginger-sense roms) the ICS Sense, hd2 will live much more
i feel the same. every fone out there can be my hd2. no need to upgrade till we get some true improvements in hardware. htc and hd2 rule
