When I record audio in WhatsApp, the sound is very compressed and noisy.
Recording using the phone's default Voice Recording app records fine and sounds great. This only happens inside WhatsApp. When my friend records something on his iphone to send over WhatsApp, it sounds great... crystal clear.
I can record using the Voice Recorder app, and then share it via WhatsApp, but the person receiving it cannot play it.
Could someone else download WhatsApp and try recording an attachment?
The compression/distortion is much more noticeable when recording something other than a voice, like a guitar.
edit: I emailed their support and they said they have no such issue
Well your still a step ahead of me, I can't get Whatsapp to record what so ever, even when I record a video with it it comes out with no audio at all. As far as I know this only happens in Whatsapp, all my other apps can use the mic.
So yes there is an issue with it.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Are you using a custom ROM?
Maybe that affects it for some reason. Like I said their support tested it with a GS2 when I emailed them and they said it recorded and sent fine in normal quality.
I'm using Congnition 1.15
Can someone else please try?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Mines all stock, not even rooted. So I couldn't have crippled it.
Honestly I don't have any use for it so I didn't really try and find what's wrong.
Like you I was testing Whatsapp with an iPhone and the audio I received from it was crystal clear but what ever I send comes out blank with nothing to hear. It's like it can't use the mic.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I feel like their support might not even be able to notice the difference in compression lol.
It makes no sense that it would compress it on my phone but not on theirs
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Lol well maybe to them it sounds normal when it's compressed.

Yeah, I even told them to record the same thing in WhatsApp and in Voice Recorder and they claimed it sounded the same
That's why I'm asking you fine gents to test for me
Well I just reinstalled whatsapp and surprisingly enough the audio works now and I can confirm that whatsapp seems to compress the file cuz the quality isn't as good as the stock voice recorder, but it's not that bad imo.
Sent from my GT-I9100
if you're just recording your voice its not that bad. But anything else sounds awful
I tried recording my guitar and it sounded abysmal
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Yea probably. Well I guess the best thing to do is just use some other service in the mean time. Doesn't look like they'll fix it anytime soon.
Cheers bud.
Sent from my GT-I9100
I realized that it sounds just as compressed if I use a 3rd party voice recording app
I wonder why the stock recorder app has perfect quality audio while 3rd party apps sound like crap
is it like an API/driver thing?
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Hmm it might be an Api or driver but I think they're all compressing it to decrease file size and thus traffic on their servers. Cuz for instance if you send a photo it doesn't send it with the full resolution but lowers it to maintain file size. So i'm guessing they do the same to audio files.
Sent from my GT-I9100
Nah it happens with any App that isn't the stock Voice Recorder app
I guess it's special
I flashed MIUI and nothing records with the same quality as Samsung's app

Hi Guys,
Have been doing some gooling on this.... but didnt find any solutions so far.
Anyways, is there any way to record a video call (not skype or anything, but a standard 3G video call) on the Galaxy S, maybe using some app perhaps?
Cheers guys n thanks in advance,
Gehan
Since there doesn't seem to be a decent working call recording app you might be out of luck
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I really doubt it. There's an app in the development section that records voice call, but I think it will be difficult to do the same with a video call. The processing strain will be large.
Like the title sais, will this be possible (video calling over 3G) with the new custom ROMs ?
Thx, cheers!

Not unless you find an app that supports it, video calling of any kind is not natively supported by the os
Don't know about new roms but existing firmwares already manage it with the latest Skype from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1148708 or from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1153285 does it. They are moded versions of the most recent Skype release on the Market.
Skype video calling is awesome. :3
I wasnt refering to skype, my carrer gives me 500 video call minuter per month. I was talking about normal 3G video calling, made like an usual phone call.

Maybe samung built it into there version of the os, what i mean is, stock android has no video calling ability, infact 2.3.4 will be the first version of android that supports video calling, through gtalk

Try a video calling app called TANGO. It works perfectly with the PLAY, back AND front cam...great quality.
It integrates itself into the android "dialer" kind of and syncs all of your contacts. You can call a computer also in addition to a phone.
I used it to call an ex-gf on her samsung infuse (at&t)
worked FLAWLESSLY
(its free)
Tryed skype, it's awsome Thx 4 the help.

Sometimes it doesn't work, if you call someone on your list you will hear a ring tune from your phone but on his/her phone it's not ringing.. Vice versa..
Sometimes also headphone feature are not working, and there is a scratching sound that is so annoying..
According to the SE facebook this morning, the new Skype update supports video calling over 3G on the Play.
In the latest update Motorola Atrix was finally whitelisted for Skype

no sound when video
Hi Folks !
Have you tried Skype w/video in your Atrix ?
Works Ok ?
I tried mine this morning, but when I start video, just hear noise and the other party seems to hear a lot of noise too...
The video works Ok, but kills audio...
When I make audio only calls, it works like a charm.
I see an update in the future

I second that. Made a call just now, the other person got feed back and noise.
Also, the video and whole skype interface is really not slick at all. Very laggy all round. I'll be sticking to Google Talk for now. Once they solve rhese issues i'll be happy and so will the other half as I can then Skype video her in the car instead!

how i hate those guys. this app is free...so there is no running version. that is the way of microsoft. it is really fantastic how a company like ms is not able to keep good software running.
so in my opinion there will be no finally. would like to use gtalk but lovly motorola do no want to oupdate the european atrix. great move too. a bit disciminating....the rest of the world has it, but there has to be a reason...because moto is great.
It's the same for me, video works great but audio is very noisy and doesn't work.
Can someone try a videocall with headphones? I can't beacause don't own it.
Skype with ear buds worked better. The person on other end had much less static. Could actually understand me.

I'm very happy with the skype update for Atrix. All I can say is a big **** ya on the video quality! I have been using Google Talk/Qik since I got the phone but with horrible quality over the network and wifi...
I haven't had a issue with the sound on either end of the calls yet but I'll have to try the headphones next time maybe when I'm out somewhere or something.
So go skype... about damn time.

Did the sound test call without headphones and couldn't understand a word. With headphones the sound great.
I, honestly notice almost the same call quality as I have on my laptop, if not better? Same for the video, truth is I've only used it over wifi.

I have the P6810 but ran into the same problem in Skype. I have the Skype version downloaded from Market.
It varies, when I make a Skype video call it opens full screen, sometimes during the call the screen goes into a smaller screen overlayed on top of the full screen.
I can only guess its a Skype software issue.
Its bugging me so I may have to do a hard reset to see if it sorts it out as I can't get any answers from Skype

I use my tab for skype fairly often. It is definitely louder than my GS2, but the speakers are still mediocre. I can't compare to a Nexus but I wouldn't go in with high expectations. Audio quality over bluetooth is better, so you can always hook it up to a decent bluetooth speaker if it's a concern.

I'm interested in knowing this too. I tried this workaround and it doesn't seem to have worked for me. However, it was a bit hit and miss in terms of finding an "old" version of skype.
My video calls go as follows:
1- Fullscreen on connection for about 5-10 seconds
2- Image shrinks to half size leaving a "border" which flickers with whatever was on-screen when the picture chaged - annoying
3- Today after about 10 minutes the border went away. This is the first time it has gone. The image remains a small window, now with a black border.
So, if anyone has any bright ideas...
Google skype version 2.1.0.46 and install. Run it and try video. Should be full screen. Then goto market and update Skype.

Most phones blow out the sound when recording stuff that's super loud, but apparently not the HTC One. Sounds flippin' fantastic. Here's some nightclub videos I took last night:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8QdbQe--3k
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jVW9B_tfri4
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4Ac02Qb_qU
The videos quality itself is also fairly commendable considering the poor lighting there.
Very good indeed. I'll give it a shot myself...
I'm really pleased with the audio. I was in Disney world, recorded tons of videos of the rides and while really loud, sound is great and not distorted at all.

The Serial number will show when the phone was manufactured. So far, there has been no news of HTC running out of their stock yet, so we can safely assume anything made up til Mid-May will have the HDR mic.

What a difference 1.5 years of phone technology makes...
Does anyone know if apps than the video camera can use the HDR audio capabilities? I tried to record our band rehearsing last Friday and it was just as distorted as on any other phone.
We play really loud, probably louder than the music in that club (we use earplugs) so maybe it was simply more than the HDR microphone could handle.
However, I used a 3rd party audio app (J4T), and now I'm wondering if it would have been better if I had shot a video using the stock camera instead.
