User's guide to installing data2ext mod

Setting Up Data2Ext with RA 1.7 Recovery​I made this guide for my own personal future use and decided to share it with the community. I take no credit whatsoever for this information or the files used to install this mod on your phone. Credit for the guide goes to Laie1472 who spent several hours walking me through the process in the absence of good instructions for our device. If you don’t know what this mod does or could potentially do to/for your phone, don’t install it. Please read this entire guide before flashing or asking questions which may already have been answered. As the title states this is for users who have RA 1.7 Recovery installed. Now on with the guide:
Step 1. Back up your sd card to your computer as this process will format and partition your sd card.
Step 2. Reboot into recovery and select partition sd (this will wipe everything on your card). You will be given 3 prompts….swap, ext. 2, & Fat 32. Partition as follows:
Swap=0
Ext2=1024
Fat32=remainder
Step 3. Since the above step erased everything on your sd card, now would be a good time to do a nandroid backup.
Step 4. Download & place on the root of your sd, the data2ext2-v7.zip attached to this thread, but DO NOT FLASH IT YET.
Step 5. Decide whether or not you’re going to use your current rom or install a new rom (easier). If you’re going to use your current, you’re going to want to uninstall all of your apps & theme in order to utilize the additional memory you’ll be freeing up on your phone. If you’re going to use a new rom download it & the appropriate gapps and move them to the root of your sd.
Step 6. Boot into recovery, wipe, and flash your new rom & gapps. Boot into your rom and sign in, but don’t install any of your apps.
Step 7. Reboot back into recovery and flash the data2ext2-v7.zip
Step 8. Boot into your rom & open Terminal Emulator.
Type the following commands minus the ( )
su
mount|egrep mmcblk0p2
(this should return nothing but a #)
Now type:
mke2fs -m0 -b4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2
(let the scripts run….when they finish you’ll type the next line)
data2ext --enable
(You should now be prompted to reboot, so type)
Reboot
Step 9. Once you’re rebooted go to settings/storage. You should now see .94 GB or so of available space… Congratulations you’re almost done.
Step 10. The performance boost. Open Terminal Emulator again and type:
su
busybox mount -o remount,noatime,nodiratime, /mnt/asec/ext/ext2 /data
reboot
Step 11. You’re finished, but before you re-install your apps read the You Should Know section of this guide.
You Should Know:​Now say you want to make a backup of your rom and you have data2ext enabled
do this
Boot into recovery and choose backup and restore. Then choose
create nandroid+ext back up
after it's done always flash the data2ext zip and reboot.
Say aosp/cm/whoever releases an updated rom and you want to update your rom and keep all your apps and theme and settings
Do this
Boot into recovery and make a nand+ext back up by following the steps above. "you don't have to if you already have good backup''
Now wipe cache and davlik-cache and flash then flash the rom update then flash the data2ext zip and reboot
Say you want to flash a new kernel with data2ext enabled
Do this
Boot into recovery wipe cache and davlik-cache. Then flash the kernel then flash the data2ext zip and reboot.
If you ever need to wipe cache or davlik-cache always flash the data2ext zip right after then reboot
PLEASE NEVER WIPE THE SD EXT unless your redoing the whole mod or just want to start fresh
AGAIN NEVER WIPE THE SD EXT
this will more that likely result in a boot loop and make all your once good nands useless
and you might have to reflash your recovery
Say you want to flash a sense rom to update prl/profile.
Do this
Boot into recovery wipe data,cache and davlik cache
then flash sense rom and update.
Then reboot back into recovery wipe data,cache and davlik-cache then choose which nand you want to restore after it's done restoring flash the data2ext zip and reboot
Always flash the data2ext zip after doing a nand restore.
Also with this mod it's not recommended to let your battery die or do a battery pull. If you do you might have to reflash your recovery and redo the whole mod over.
Also only shut down you phone with the rom options
apps like quick shutdown and hot reboot etc will not play nice with this mod. So only use the roms power options to shut down.
If you ever want to disable this mod, open Terminal Emulator and type:
su
data2ext --disable

Need some help, I tried flashing data2ext2-v7.zip and this is what I get...

This was using the file in the OP with RA 1.7
Everything went fine, partitioned, wiped, fresh install of rom and gapps, rebooted, signed in, rebooted to recovery and then no go trying to flash data2ext
Any help would be great.

Thanks a bunch. Got it and worked perfect. Just have to do the performance boost (What does that do really?) then going to look at the S-Off thing. I have put that off for a long time but might as well go for it.

I'm really considering this mod right now but have a concern with the battery pull portion of it since I have a 14-month old daughter that sometimes thinks the phone is a toy. lol
Question: If I disable the mod will it automatically move all /data back onto the phone? Assuming of course I have enough internal memory for it to be moved over, will it transfer automatically?

No problem at all. Your guide worked perfect and turns out it was super easy.
I also am happy to be back RA Recovery. Was using Clockwork for a short while and while its nice, RA is much better I think. Thats just me though.
Got me a **** ton of space now and phone is moving right along again. Thanks again guys.

I've been using this mod for a couple of weeks now and have had to do a couple of battery pulls with no negative effects on my phone. There are obviously things that can go wrong, but no guarantees they will. I've enabled it, disabled it, gone back to a sense rom, updated my Orlando & gone back without trouble....but you wont know for sure how your phone responds until you try it.

No problem, just back everything up to your pc and do a nand backup before you start and you have nothing to lose and about 3/4 gb of storage to gain

At step 8 I get "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 is apparently in use by the system; will not make a filesystem here!" when I input mke2fs -m0 -b4096 /dev/block/mmcblk0p2. The only deviation I made is I had to get a TE from the market since the one that comes with jaybob's rom won't accept numerical input.

I've never run Jaybob's rom, so I'm not sure if this is a rom specific thing, because I have used it on Deck's Gingerbread, Aosp, & CM7. What did you get when you typed:
su
mount|egrep mmcblk0p2
That should have returned only: #
Also which terminal emulator did you get from the market (I use Android Terminal Emulator by Jack Palevich) and were you using the default gingerbread keyboard (as opposed to swype, slide it, etc.)?

I was using the default GB keyboard, and I got the same TE from the market. When I typed mount|egrep mmcblk0p2 I get "/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 on /sd-ext type ext3 (rw,noatime,nodiratime,barrier=1,nodelalloc,data=writeback)" then it goes back to just #. I was burned out last night, now I can think again. Seems like maybe the ext partition is ext3 when it should be ext2? I'm using RA 1.7 and I followed the directions for partitioning the sdcard.

About a year ago I used apps to SD for a short while then stopped, is it possible that the ext part from then is still there and conflicting with the new partition from RA 1.7? I would have thought it would be wiped during the new partitioning. The only ext visible from TE is the new one, but that's all I can come up with.

I installed the setup last night without a hitch. Using Kushdeck's latest ROM and so far so good. Re-installed all my apps from Titanium Backup without a problem and everything going smooth. Once again, thanks for the detailed how-to and informative comments to update the ROM

[Q] dalingrin OC app questions

G'day. I hate to be posting, especially after that intro video However, I have searched thru the related posts, (everything that has kernel + dalingrin in the title/subject etc) and I can't seem to find anything related to specifically what I need.
Background: Bought nook on ebay from a nice guy who included instructions on how to register and re-root. Took me a hour or two because he didn't include a step. Got it figured out without his help - so I'm not a complete idiot, but I'm out of my realm on this one. I don't do this kind, so please be kind and patient.
I want to install the dalingrin‘s Nook Color Tweak App as I find the volume on my nook repulsing. I need a hearing aid to read their lips, it's that quiet =\ So I am asking for a tutorial basically. I read that it needs a kernel, how do I find the right one, I found threads that had a few kernel downloads but not the one I need from what the red text says. Where do I install it? (is that information included in the download, once I find where it is?) and lastly, once the kernel is installed, do I run the app like I did manual nooter, installing zip, choosing zip, etc?

I haven't played much with kernel yet but do suggest, since the OC (overclocked) kernel created by Daringlin, do search for his name.
AFAIK, the 063011 is his latest work with 5 cpu clock stepping up to 1200MHz along with voltage adjustments and audio tune.
Make sure you get the corresponding for your running ROM, i.e. running off eMMC or booting from uSD.
If I find the link, I'll post.
Other members surely will help you out.
Update: just to clear up a bit, you need to install his apps (NookColorTweak) in order to adjust voltage and audio

Most of the posts I've come across are people complaining they can't get it to work in general or their kernel doesn't work. I need to know how to install it before I can utilize the "I broke it" posts lmao. Thank you though.

If you read the whole post, that is the link I provided to ask my questions on. I want to know the info on how to install THAT app, including which kernel I need ( it has a few listed in red at the bottom) and how I go about doing that. As I mentioned, I am not incompetent, but I am not familiar with this kind of stuff either. A simple how-to is all I'm looking for from someone who has actually went thru the steps to install this app.

As I mentioned above, you need to identify which category you are falling in.
I believe each version of his (dalingrin's) work, there are 4 different kernels which associate with each of the running ROM.
1. Rooted NC which runs stock ROM (Froyo 2.2)
a. Running off internal eMMC
b. Booting from external uSD
2. CM7 ROM (Gingerbread 2.3.x)
a. Running off internal eMMC
b. Booting from external uSD
The latest version would be the "06302011"
Again, firstly, identify and download the correct file.
Secondly, i do not root my NC but install CM7 ROM on it, so
a. for running off eMMC, put the correct file in the flashable CwM, insert into the NC, power it up, "install zip file from SD card" -> "choose zip file from SD card", then flash it.
b. for booting from uSD, put the correct file into the root folder of the bootable CM7, insert into the NC, power it up, it will automatically detect and install the OC's zip file.

I hope I get this right: When I got the NC, I had to reset it to default settings. Registered under my account, then restored it to 1.1, then to 1.2 (which I think is Froyo 2.2 from what I read here. Then I used manual nooter 4.6.16
its not running a boot disk, it was installed straight into the NC, if that makes sense.
So I guess I fall into:
"1. Rooted NC which runs stock ROM (Froyo 2.2)"

So just install to a boot disk, put it in, install like nooter. Then install the tweak app the same way and all I'm done? Coming from this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925451 it says " Must be set with an app like SetCPU unless running CM7" Is this an app I download from the market, correct?

I guess you would need the third one from your link (Froyo 1.2 ... emmc)
Create a flashable uSD, drag the zip file on, put the uSD in the NC, then install/choose zip from SD card.
Keep all of your fingers crossed.

P.S. since you rooted the NC, you should get full access on the Market, do search for the NookcolorTweak app first and see if you can find it before flash the kernel.

If your'e running cm7 the correct kernel has been appearing in the last few nightlies, though I recommend you wait until tonight to install it.
If it's stock you're using.. well... why?

Restoring tpt functionality

These are good explanations, very thorough.
I've picked up on a few things that could be added/edited.
1.) Gen 2 is a newer version of the radio firmware, as well as the different memory map
2.) Add Amon Ra Recovery as an alternative to CWM, I know it's not very popular but I find it good for partitioning.
3.) Add link to Mr Pigfish, https://market.android.com/details?id=com.apedroid.pigfish&feature=search_result
4.) On the Flashing ROM's section, I'd also add 'Go into Mounts and Storage and Select Format System'. Not needed, but recommended for the cleanest installation and hopefully fewer problems down the line.
5.) There's the CM7 Converter thing for people to use CM7 on a Gen 1 phone. It can be flashed via recovery.
6.) Add TPT link for Ginger Stir Fry (Over on MoDaCo) since it's popular.
7.) Remove or clarify 'Gen does not matter' under the TPT section, a few may take this that Gen 1 ROM's can be flashed on a Gen 2 device :/
8.) Put warnings/important things in big scary red writing.
9.) Bold and underline the headings e.g. Gen 1/Gen 2, TPT, Root etc.
10.) Personally, I'd say that the Firmware is more similar to the BIOS than Recovery. Recovery is probably most similar to Windows Recovery Environment.
I'm glad you explained what recovery is since it's a bit annoying when people don't know and don't bother to Google it, hopefully they'll read this and understand. I hope you find my comments constructive.
Partitioning your SD Card.
Why?
To create an EXT Partition for A2SD (Not to be confused with the Froyo Apps2SD).
Why do I want this?
For more space on the phone's internal memory and to allow certain apps like widget's to reside on 'internal' memory which may not be available if they were on the FAT32 Partition used by the Froyo Apps2SD method.
How do I do this?
There are a few ways to do this, I found this method the best. I'd recommend doing this before flashing a ROM with a full wipe to avoid issues.
1.) Create a full Backup in Recovery in case something goes wrong
2.) Mount the SD Card on Windows/Linux/Mac
3.) Copy the contents of the SD card into a folder on Windows/Linux/Mac
4.) Download Amon Ra Recovery - Gen 1 Gen 2 Ensure you download and verify you download the correct version. Flashing the wrong version i.e. Gen 1 on a Gen 2 will cause a lot of problems.
5.) Flash it with your existing recovery e.g. Clockworkmod
6.) Go back to Advanced > Reboot Recovery
7.) Scroll down to Partition SD Card
8.) Select Partition SD
9.) Swap Size 0 MB EXT Partition Size 512 MB/1024 MB - depends on the size of your SD card and the number of apps you have.
10.) Press Home to Confirm. ALL Data on your SD will be erased.
11.) Press back and select EXT2 to EXT3 for the best compatibility with A2SD scripts.
12.) Select USB-MS toggle
13.) Drag and drop the ROM you want to flash on your SD
14.) Disable USB-MS toggle.
15.) Flash .zip from SD Card.
16.) If you intend to use CM7 download S2E from the Market to enable A2SD. Tick the first two boxes in the app. Alternatively, if you want to ensure you have enough space for when the Google Backup & Restore happens I've uploaded the APK of S2E to install BEFORE you flash Gapps.

Nice guide, I have a couple of suggestions/comments
I don't know if you are aware, but Gen2 blades do have TPT, they just use a different file format (image.bin rather than the .img and .mbn files). There are not as many custom layourts and such around, but I have just put one up for the purposes of unbricking. For that reason, I don't think its a good idea to recommend flashing via windows as protection from a brick anymore (especially because windows flashing goes horribly wrong every so often).
In the rooting section, why don't you link to kalt kaffes modified z4root instead - since it can root Gen2 blades aswell. For Gen2 blades, ROM manager from market is the the easiest way to install recovery.
I've written an unbricking guide in the last few days (that's where the Gen2 TPT is). You are welcome to make use of that if you like.

TPT is not able to change the lowest level firmware file - partition.mbn. If you try to flash a TPT with a different partition.mbn then it just wont flash. You need windows to change the entire firmware. What wbaw has done (and I just repackaged his work as "custom") is create a mixture of files from Gen1 and Gen2, partition.mbn and the few files that have to match from Gen1, and the rest from Gen2. This makes it possible to TPT a Gen1 phone to a mixture that for all intents and purposes is Gen2. wbaw's TPTs can't be flashed to a real Gen2 phone because they have a Gen1 partition.mbn, but It would be equally possible for someone to make the opposite of what wbaw has made - a image.bin TPT with a Gen2 partition.mbn and co and Gen1 everything else (or just with a different partition layout), but no one has yet done so (and I haven't taken the time to work out how). So right now windows is the only way to go back to Gen1 from Gen2, but it doesn't have to be. More to the point, it isn't the only way to re-flash real Gen2 firmware, because I've now put a Gen2 image.bin in my unbricking guide. That's why I wouldn't recommend that people flash anything via windows with the aim of avoiding a brick.
You can use this tool by fonix232 to convert between multi-image TPTs and image.bin TPTs. If you start out with the multi image files from stock Gen2 firmware then you can create a image.bin that will flash on stock Gen2 phones as I have done.
EDIT: jsut to clarify, It's still fine to flash via windows as per my guide if you want to be able to flash all the TPTs that are out there on forums now, or to repartition or enable fastboot, its just not necessary as a safety measure.

Not sure if this is the best idea for 'n00bs' but there's an excellent partition tool for custom partitions.

It works with the Windows Flasher and the TPT's.
Instructions for use:
1.) Open the program
2.) Drag the sliders or enter values for the partition layout you want
3.) Press Create files
4.) Open the TPT .zip
5.) Navigate to the directory with "partition_zte.mbn" and "appsboot.mbn"
6.) Replace the existing "partition_zte.mbn" and "appsboot.mbn" with the new ones.
Done.
Also, add How to flash the Gapps package/Where's my Market gone and difference between Stable, Nightlies etc. under the CM section since some people can't be bothered to Google it.
1.) Place the gapps file that you downloaded on the root of your SD Card
2.) Reboot into recovery
3.) Select Flash .zip from SD Card
4.) Confirm
5.) Reboot
6.) Done
What's the difference between Stable, Nightlies, Experimental and Alpha?
Stable versions are those where all known issues have been addressed and resolved. This version is for everyday use.
Test / RC versions are similar to the experimental versions, but are in the final stages of testing before being "stable". There may be a few bugs left, but this version is usually stable enough for everyday use.
Experimental / Alpha versions are those where new features are being added, modified, and tweaked, and there are known bugs that are being worked on. This version is for beta / alpha testers.
Nightly builds are daily compiled builds from source. This version therefore has the latest bleeding edge features & tweaks, but it is also the mostly likely to have bugs and issues.

CyanogenMod Tips/Solutions, some from the CyanogenMod Wiki here.
It's slow!
Remove stock launcher "ADW". It slows down the homescreen badly.
Recommended: "Launcher Pro" or "Gingerbread Launcher" from Market.
Omg I flashed CM7 and now I don't have Market!
You need to install the Gapps zip. Sign into your account on the First Time Setup screen and Market will activate
My Wi-Fi doesn't turn off/it's draining my battery!
The workaround for Wi-Fi sleep policy that doesn't seem work is download Green Power from the Market if you want your Wi-Fi off when your screen turns off.
Help, Nightly 1xx doesn't work properly/There's a bug!
They're nightlies, sometimes they don't work properly. Use the recommended Nightly from the Wiki Page or another ROM. Also, refer to the CM7 thread on MoDaCo linked below for possible fixes/workarounds.
I don't know what nightly to choose!
First check the CyanogenMod Wiki listed above the CM7 thread on MoDaCo here.
Read the last five pages on that thread for up to date info and feedback on the latest nightlies.
If you still don't know then post in the CM7 thread. Don't create an entire new thread to ask that question please.

Install this Apk:
Install Astro File Browser from the market. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.metago.astro
Download the file on your computer, then copy it across to somewhere on your phone
Browse to that somewhere and click on the file. Open app manager and click install.
After installation, click open.
Tell it to do Permanent Root
Wait for it to reboot
Done.

I'd suggest you use the TPT method here since the process would be quicker than rooting it manually etc.: http://android.modaco.com/topic/337798-gen1-to-gen2-tpt-upgrade/
This will root the phone, install Clockworkmod recovery and put on a new 2.3 ROM as well. I'd suggest you use the Ginger Stir Fry one on that page.
I think z4root would work as well if you don't want to carry out the TPT method.

[Q] Amatuer Noob needs help

I just got my NC and decided to give this a try instead of buying a N2A card.
Android Version 2.3.7
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Mod Version CyanogenMod-7.1.0-encore
build Number GWK74
ClockworkMod 3.2.0.1
When I initially booted off the memory card everything was smooth until gapp. It loaded but when it came to selecting the apps when I clicked on one it flashed and just continued to set up. It didn't let me select any. No big deal because it worked fine.
I had force close issues so I ran Fix Permissions through ROM Manager and this seemed to help except for a few apps.
I used LCDDensity and changed that to 161 with Kill All which cleared up my force close issues on Words With Friends and Tweetcaster.
I get on today and notice videos are now missing from the market main screen and apps that I had yet to install are now no longer compatible with my device. They were last night but I was picking and choosing what I wanted on here. Why the sudden change? I rebooted the device just a few minutes ago and now the sudden change.
I also read about clearing davlik cache but how do you do this? I am not a programmer or developer so I have no clue. I have spent hours reading here everyday since Christmas and my mind is melting. I tried rebooting into recovery but I do not get the option to do anything. The penguin appears and a few things scroll down the screen and it reboots. I tried using the emulator and that won't work either unless I am typing something in wrong.
Are there any other tweaks or things I need to do to keep things stable and running smoothly? Are their certain things I need to clear regularly i.e. davlik cache, application cache or data?
I appreciate all the hard work and the time everyone puts into this. Please help. Like I said I need kindergarten instructions. Thank you.

First off, I've never had much success running from uSD. Even as far back as NookieFroyo. Once I made the move to running from eMMC most of my issues disappeared.
Davlik can be wiped from the Advanced selection when you boot to CWM as can Fix Permissions.

If you are going to run from SD then it is highly advisable to use a Sandisk Class 2 or 4 card. The brand does make a difference and others have found that other makes lead to slow downs and instabilities.
I would also recommend starting again following the veryGreen SD install method

This is CM7 but with the latest improvements including kernel adding to stability and performance.

Also, never use Windows to format your uSD. The format utility in Windows can (and does) screw up the format. Use this freebie. Has always worked well for me. You would be surprised how many problems that involve uSDs are traced back to a bad format.

How do I get to the Advance section and boot to CWM? When I try it through ROM Manager the device restarts with the penguin and after a few lines it says the system is ****ting down. It does not give me any menu options.

I read that this was recommended and when I do it my apps that have issues work and they work well. No more force close issues.
Thanks for the advice guys. Like I said I have no experience with any of this. I am learning though and love to tinker with things and figure out how they work.

I did the veryGrenn SD install. Is there a link on how to install a new ROM. I read the link but I just do not understand it.

To update the ROM on an SD card install power down, remove card then you put the card back onto the PC and copy the new ROM zip onto it but named as update-cm-*.zip. Put the card back in the Nook and power up with N button pressed until you see the screen flash. Choose reboot recovery and the new zip will be installed.
However, if you are doing a major ROM switch and haven't invested too much time installing apps etc yet then I would recommend just doing the VeryGreen install from the beginning to get a clean install.

I did a clean install and so far things are working well. Base off of the veryGreen install are there any "must have" settings or tweaks I need to do to keep things smooth? Any nook or CM7 apps you guys would recommend. I know it has been answered 50,000 times but I am losing sleep reading the forums here.

+ picture viewing: quickpic (must have)
+ time: clocksync (must have)
+ file navigate: file expert (must have), astro file manager
+ player: rockplayer
+ ebook: Mantano (recommended)
+ weather: fancy widget
+ web browser: Opera (like better), dophin HD
+ calculator: TI-83/86 emulators, also mortgage cal. and real science cal.
+ game: none
+ sex pos.: forget the name
+ few others that occasionally use.

Every one gets their own favorite apps to suit their interests. I personally go for ES file explorer for general file navigation and accessing my computers' shares wirelessly, Dolphin HD browser for the gesture navigation, moboplayer for playing media, and QuickPic for photo viewing.
But don't forget Nook Tweaks. This allows you to tweak the kernel and benefit from some of the good things in there that distinguish the Dalingrin CM7 kernel. Like overclocking to get a really good boost in performance (most people go for 1200MHz max for stability), undervolting to stretch the battery a bit, audio settings to make the stock feeble audio considerably louder (set DAC boost about 50%), and USB hosting if you want to connect USB peripherals.

Really? You are sure it's CWM 3.2.0.1? When you boot to recovery you don't get a Menu? If not, methinks your CWM is hosed. Have to say I do not ever recall not getting a CWM Menu. Nor can I call up seeing a "penguin"?

I'm not using SD CM7 currently myself but my recollection when I did is that the recovery is not a full clockwork but a stripped down one just designed to install update zips. As such you don't get the full menu and operation from ROM manager isn't going to work properly.

On this clean install I finally got it to work and there is no penguin. Just the menu that I should see so I finally cleared davlik cache.
I downloaded nook Tweaks as well.

So I have done a clean install of veryGreen exactly as posted except that I have the latest stable instead of a nightly. So do I simply download that ROM file and do as you stated for MiRaGe Kang? Just asking because on that link there is a bunch of different things listed and I get kind of lost. All I need is the ROM file and follow what you said quoted above?

The * is just shorthand for any name. You can't include * in the actual name as it is a wildcard character that matches any part of a name. The important part is that the new name starts with update-cm- so you can just put that on the front of the MiRaGe zip (which is all you need).

Thank you. I figured it out kind of. I downloaded that ROM and followed the instructions and rooted my nook which I did not want to do. I wanted to dual boot off the memory card. It is all a learning experience.
I did a factory restore and all was good again. Started fresh and was going for a new verygreen install and my memory card slot no longer locks the card in. I am so thankful I had completed the factory reinstall. My wife went to B&N today and exchanged it for me with no issue.
So for now I think I will stick to the verygreen install and tweak it to my liking until something stable for ICS comes about.

[Q] Nook Color - Google Apps Pack won't install

Hello,
I have just installed CyanogenMod 7 for the Barnes & Noble Nook Color :: V7.0.3 using ClockworkMod Recovery.
After installing CyanogenMod 7, I install the Google Apps addon version: gapps-gb-20110307. The installation goes smoothly, and I receive the "Installation Complete!" message before I remove the MicroSD card and reboot.
Upon reboot from ClockworkMod Recovery, I receive an "Installation Failed" screen that tells me to power on and off the device. I do so, and successfully boot into CyanogenMod7.
I immediately proceed to the Homescreen, where the only items are "Messaging" "Contacts" "Clock" "Email" "Camera" and "Gallery". I have no prompt to set up my Google Account or Timezone. Also, I do not have Market, but I can connect to my WiFi network.
Thank you for your help, it is appreciated. I am obviously a noob, and my apologies for stepping on any toes!

Wow! Looking at some of the questions neighboring mine and their lack of responses, I tend to doubt that mine is going to get answered, even over the long run. I thought this forum had active users, at least that is what the Registration Video said...6 million active users was it???

First of all, deep breath. It may not get answered right away, but typically the questions get answered.
First off, any particular reason you are running 7.0.3? If I recall, this includes the old kernel that has terrible battery life. I would recommend going to 7.1 found here.
I don't know which gapps goes with 7.0.3, but I would double check to make sure it was the right one. I'd still recommend upgrading to 7.1 stable.

Also, I personally recommend doing ROM and GAPPS in two steps... I have eliminated some of the problems I have seen myself by using that method.
1. Install ROM... boot it up... let it settle in.
2. Reboot into CWM and install GAPPS... boot it up... do your thing
Also remember... 4 hours isn't a real long time to wait before posting a second post like you did... especially on a Sunday evening... This is a forum... not an immediate feedback application.

I also took DizzyDen's advice and installed CyanogenMod 7.1, reboot, let it settle, powered off, booted into Clockwork and installed the google apps pack (gapps-gb-20110828-signed), then rebooted again.
Still, I have no Android Marketplace.
As I stated in my previous post, I am a newbie, and I don't know what I am talking about, but off the top of my head, I have a feeling as if the google apps pack that I used (gapps-gb-20110828-signed) is not the right one. Could this hold any water?
Also, I don't know if it makes any difference, but I bought my Nook in December 2011 and it is a refurbished model. Because I purchased it in 2011, I updated the partitioning scheme using (repartition1GBdata-v1) and (reformatData-v1).

If it isn't on the Homescreen, did you check by open App Drawer?

I did not find the Marketplace in the App Drawer. My app drawer currently contains:
Browser, Calculator, Calendar, Camera, Clock, Contacts, Dev Tools, Downloads, DSPManager, Email, File Manager, Gallery, Messaging, Music, Phone, ROM Manager, Search, Settings, Sound Recorder, Spare Parts, Superuser, Terminal Emulator, Theme, Chooser, Videos and Voice Dialer.
I was having a look around and figured out how to look at the Internal storage and found something called Market Apps Installer version 1.1. I click on it, but it offers few options to fiddle with and seemingly no way to access the Android Marketplace.
Again, thanks for your help, I truly do appreciate it!

If it doesn't work as expect, I guess you have to list step by step what you have done up to that point, that may help us pin point where and what you did wrong.
Also, pls clearly indicate where you run the ROM from.

gapps-gb-201111028-signed.zip is still on the CM wiki as the latest version... did you verify MD5 checksum and ensure you didn't have a bad download?

In here, xda NC forum, you will frequently see the term "eMMC" and "uSD"
eMMC refers to the internal memory of the device, as currently where the B&N stock ROM resides while uSD is the external card where we can put the custom ROMs such CM7/9 in and run from there.
Depends on which method you choose to use, different procedures/instructions needed.

As for your theory, I and we assume that you have installed CORRECTLY and if it isn't working as expect, then we need to know step-by-step how you did.
Everything is possible from bad zip to bad card.

I am ashamed to say it, but I do not know how to verify a checksum to ensure the intergrity of a download. Although, I did download the gapps file twice, once each on different computers, copied it to the SD card and attempted to update. Is it possible that I could have gotten 2 bad downloads on 2 different PCs?

I have gone back and redone every bit of my CyanogenMod and Google apps installation on my Nook Color. I have taken notes on it and below is my step by step description of what I have done and observed. My apologies for the book, but I wanted to be as thorough as I could. Thanks for your help and I would appreciate and advice that can help me resolve this unfortunate situation.
1. Downloaded ClockworkModRecovery (2gb_clockwork-0.7.tar.gz) from http://code.google.com/p/monster-rootpack/downloads/detail?name=2gb_clockwork-0.7.tar.gz&can=2&q=
2. Downloaded CyanogenMod 7.1 (update-cm-7.1.0-encore-signed.zip) from here http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?type=stable&device=encore
3. Downloaded Google Apps (gapps-gb-20110828-signed) from here http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Latest_Version/Google_Apps
4. Downloaded Win32DiskImager (win32diskimager-binary) from here https://launchpad.net/win32-image-writer/+download
5. Extracted Win32DiskImager files to a folder on desktop
6. Decompressed and Extracted ClockworkModRecovery to Desktop (this took longer than I expected, the extraction strangely taking 5 minutes)
7. Start up Win32 DiskImager and receive the following File Error message: An error occurred while accessing the device. This usually means something is currently accessing the device; please close all applications and try again. Error 1 Incorrect Function.
8. The File Error message displays itself 3 times. I click OK three times, and then the Win32 Application opens, and I continue with my process.
9. Use Win32 DiskImager to write ClockworkMod onto my MicroSD card. The MicroSD card is a 1 year old, 2GB Transcend MicroSD Card. I use an Kingmax MicroSD card adapter to plug the card into my Computer’s SD card slot.
10. Copy the CyanogenMod 7.1 file and the Gapps 20110828 file to the MicroSD card.
11. Eject the MicroSD card from the PC, insert it into my Nook, and power on.
12. Boot into ClockwordMod Recovery, I go to Mounts and Storage, click on Format System and confirm YES. Next, I format Data and Cache.
13. NOTE: Previously, I was receiving an "Error: can't format /data" error as my newer Nook Color had a different partitioning scheme. I used ‘reformatData-v1’ and ‘repartition1GBdata-v1’ to remedy this when I first attempted to install CyanogenMod. It seems to have gone off without a hitch.
14. I then go to ‘install zip from sdcard’ , the choose ‘choose zip from SD card’ and select the Cyanogenmod 7.1 zip. It opens and installs.
15. After the install completes, I remove the SD card and reboot the Nook.
16. Upon reeboot, I get a Cyanogen loading screen for a few seconds, followed by an error screen that says Install Failed with a large red and white exclamation mark over a Nook clip art.
17. The Nook powers off after a few seconds. I then power on again and sucesssfully boot into Cyanogenmod. I do not have the Marketplace app at this point.
18. I power off, replace the SD card, and boot into Clockworkmod.
19. I choose ‘install zip from sdcard’ and then ‘choose zip from SDcard’ and the gapps zip. I confirm YES and install the gapps zip.
20. I remove the SD card and reboot the system. I receive the exact same ‘Install Failed’ error screen with the red and white exclamation mark over a nook clip art.
21. After a few seconds the nook powers off after the error screen. I power on again and boot into CyanogenMod.
22. There is no Marketplace app on the homescreen or in the App Drawer, leaving me with the same initial problem

I don't think Market will show until you have registered with google. There is a setup wizard or one time provisioning process to go through. That may be the thing that is failing when you first boot. Not sure how to get you back on track.

After you install CM 7.1, Google Apps, and reboot (hard power off and cold boot - the first boot will fail), look for the Google Talk app in your App Drawer and log in to it with your Google credentials. That should spawn the installation of the rest of the Google Apps, including the Android Marketplace.
Also, strangely enough, when installing my first app from the Market, I had to install it with the device physically in landscape mode, as the installation failed when the device was being held in portrait orientation. This seemed to clear up after the first app was installed.
I stumbled across this thread tonight, as I was searching for a solution to this exact problem while updating a friends Nook Color to CM 7.1. This did the trick for me.

The version of CM7 I placed on my card is "cm_encore_full-253.zip". The steps all the way through putting that on the card, putting that in the Nook, booting, it all worked fine. I DID notice the line that said something along the lines of looking for the gapps installation, not finding it, and skipping that step.
I downloaded the Gapps ("gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip") onto my computer. I shut off my NC, took out the SD card, and went to put it into my computer. Lo and behold, my computer can't read the SD card. It tells me it needs to be formatted before it can be used.
Uh. How am I supposed to get anything on the sd card?! I can't even format it to start over - Windows fails to format it.
I tried plugging in my NC to my computer - I at least got the CM7SDCARD to open, but it doesn't appear to be everything (there's no "boot" folder there). I tried moving the zip file to just the main directory of what I saw, and booted into recovery mode, but nothing happened.
Any assistance would be appreciated!

I DID notice the line that said something along the lines of looking for the gapps installation, not finding it, and skipping that step.
I downloaded the Gapps ("gapps-gb-20110828-signed.zip") onto my computer. I shut off my NC, took out the SD card, and went to put it into my computer. Lo and behold, my computer can't read the SD card. It tells me it needs to be formatted before it can be used.
Uh. How am I supposed to get anything on the sd card?! I can't even format it to start over - Windows fails to format it.
I tried plugging in my NC to my computer - I at least got the CM7SDCARD to open, but it doesn't appear to be everything (there's no "boot" folder there). I tried moving the zip file to just the main directory of what I saw, and booted into recovery mode, but nothing happened.
Any assistance would be appreciated!

Look at my post here. It tells you how to make the boot partition show up in your system. In your case download the rar rev 1 and follow the directions (per edit 2) on how to manually put the file on your system.

Edit: You sound like a newby, so in order to do this you need the program "root explorer" which you buy on the market. Very useful program for later use too.
If you don't feel like trying this, get a different card reader or computer to see if that helps reading the card.
Edit 2: Also look here for a more recent nightly that has a few bugs fixed. It was built in January and 253 was in November.
