[Q] [i9000m] calling on Bell users: best modem ? - Galaxy S I9000 General

I know we're probably just days away from the official GB update, but I'm ready to go for custom roms being sick and tired of all the delays.
Now, I absolutely need to keep the 850MHz band as I work in a building which is worthy of being a bunker.
KC1 hasn't been a real success story with me; Eclair's JH2 being the one with which I had the least calls drop... by far!
Going to GB, which modem would you recommend and why?
Thanks in advance!
P.S.: I still haven't decided on which rom to go for either, though...

no problem with KC1 here
using it on two phones

Stay either with JL2 or KC1. They are by far the best modems for 850Mhz.

what about miui modem for bell canada? which do you guys reccomend?

+1 for JL2

JV6 is good too on Bell. I've used it before and its better on battery life with the same if not better reception than KC1. Got 83db in some places. Bad thing is there are problems with it on some ROMs with data IIRC.
I use it on MIUI and it's great for the most part, drop back down to KC1 when I have issues on the occasional build

kc1 for sure.
its a canadian modem

kc1 for sure.
its a canadian modem

used a wide range of Roms before settling on Brotuck's and different kernels before discovering damian's gto. Best combination imo. Tried the different stock modems as they have been released, still find KC1 to be the best for Canadian (Bell) usage.

Froyo for i5800l

Hi any rom with froyo for my G3L
Thanks

check out the threads in general section
The regular I5800 europe roms work fine.
Actually, the European versions do cause problems. Since the 3G frequencies are different in Europe and America, an European ROM will not fit snuggly into the American versions of the phone. At worst, you'll never get 3G coverage and will be stuck on Edge or just G, in the best case scenario it will work, but since the phone has to be calculating a number of redundant transmission packets, you battery life will be affected. The only way to really make the problems go away is for an American based company to release a firmware on froyo... which is ridiculously easy if you're looking from the point of view of the developer, because the only thing that has to be changed are the antenna frequencies in the drivers (easily done with the base code and the right tools).
The saddest thing is the superior i9000 (Galaxy S) already has Froyo firmwares in America, Asia and Europe; the inferior i5500 (Galaxy 5) already has Froyo firmwares in America, Asia and Europe. However, for some reason companies have not taken interest in the Galaxy 3. I bought mine in Brazil and have been using it in Argentina, which thank god has SOME european frequency antennas, which means I do get 3G sometimes. However, my battery drains way faster in an European Eclair or Froyo than it did in the American Eclair.
i don't know dude... but when i flashed froyo (kyrillos custom rom) i get everything... even the 3g... and it works like a charm. with the command *#2263# it shows all GSM bands.. even the 850 band.
i have a I5800L flashed with XXJPM (european rom) and no issues what so ever.
try a custom rom . Indroid is very good and fast
Anyone with more insight or experience? Not sure if I should bother picking a 5800L, if I can't run a stable version of Froyo.
Docnus: So zero issues using Kyrillos?
I'm using Kryrillos v3.0, no problems.
Quick & stable. GPS, WI-FI, 3g works fine.
Still confused?
Hi,
Could some one please tell me, what is difference between Firmware Froyo, Honeycomb and Rom's I5800XWJPD,I5801ZHJPF,JPM,Kyrillos,..etc.
Currently using Samsung Galaxy 3 GTi5801, and its very slow.
I need desperate upgrade. Please someone guide me, am newbie to this hole android OS.
Thanks

[Q] Telstra Galaxy Tab

Hey guys
I have one of the Telstra Galaxy Tabs, and basically want to work a few things out with it.
First off I gather, with mention of all the carrier-specific or gsm/CDMA Specific ROMs, this has something to do with a radio or some such being included?
The Telstra "Next G" Network, which the Tab is used on, is basically 3g on 850mhz. Which of the types would this come under?
I have "Some" experience with flashing/ROMs/etc, namely on my Desire, so I am no expert by any means (Defo wanting to learn, and have learnt a lot from here so far ) but I do have a small amount of experience.
Thanks guys.
So, the community round here will answer questions for people that have obviously not bothered to search and ask the same stupid crap over and over and over, yet someone who has done a LOT of research, and is legitimately confused over a terminology issue (because technically it ISNT GSM or CDMA if you learn how the networks actually work) and just wants a simple answer to a simple question, just gets totally ignored?
Great to see guys, Great to see.
850 would be like att

GSM radio hardware is largely irrelevant, the hardware does the heavy lifting, the firmware doesn't care that it is, as long as it supports the right protocols.
Telstra uses a GSM/HSDPA/WCDMA network. In most cases, this is the case if your device has a SIM card.
The Tab sold here is essentially the standard UK version. If Telstra has an 850/2100Mhz HSDPA version then that could potentially be different. If you can root it using SuperOneClick, then run a complete firmware backup and try updating with another GSM firmware (e.g. RotoHammers JME) and see how you go. Before doing so, check that the device is unlocked, check if it can be rooted, determine the existing firmware/modem versions and the CSC version. It may be a custom firmware, it may not.
Your "LOT of research" was obviously fairly deficient if it hadn't ruled out Telstra using a CDMA network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra

Hey mate, i have a telstra tab, on original firmware (jj3 i think) i would only ever get 3g..
After flashing rotos jme + the phone.bin, i now get hspa most the time.
Rotos firmware works perfectly, but as always backup everything

Well, The network you are referencing is actually the "Telstra 3g" Network used only in the capital cities around here. The network my Tab is used on/made for is the "Next G" Network. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Next_G is the specific network. As you can see, it is technically not GSM at all, it is UMTS, and actually replaced our old CDMA network. So, this is where my confusion was coming in. But, if I have this correct, it is used as a basic term, meaning GSM = Sim Card and CDMA = No Sim Card (like our old CDMA network, phone itself is coded to the number/network type thing, which to be honest I didn't realise still even existed) yeah?
Cheers for clearing that up
As for the freqs, if I do a *#2263# the 3 WCDMA bands that are starred are 850mhz 1900mhz and 2100mhz. The GSM Fallback shows GSM 850 GSM 900 DCS 1800 PCS 1900 all starred. (Yes I did realise this before, I explained why I was confused with the terms hehe) The main band I have to worry about really is 850mhz though, on the WCDMA side, as you would have seen from the link.
Well, the device can be rooted with Z4Root at least, that is what I have used to root the device. This is exactly what I intend to try, once I am sure I understand everything. Does not hurt to read and re-read until one is definately comfortable with the steps, and I like to understand what every part is that I am doing.

Just to be 100% sure, that is the one here? And you are on the Next G Network? (I assume so with the 850mhz band etc, I thought this would work, but doesn't hurt to be sure I am looking at the right one you are talking about hehe.)
I can confirm the original firmware is JJ3, with phone calling capabilities etc.
Of course, backups always come first, always.
Thank you heaps for the info.
Also, if there is any part of this device's firmware etc that would be helpful in any way to the devs, I would be happy to extract anything needed from a rotobackup or whatever. I won't be flashing it straight away, and definately not before a full backup anyway.
(edit:spelling)
HI mate, how did you go with the flash?
I'm thinking of doing this as well, but just want to see if anybody has noticed any difference (for the better that is).

Best ROM for Australia

I am moving to Australia from the UK and want to know what ROM you recommend
Any rom you like should be fine. But maybe the modem will have an effect. I used JPE for a while qith good results. And JVO and JVP at the moment. But others here will know much better than me.
Possibly, if you end up on our Telstra network and if your phone is able to use the correct band, you may need a specific one to access their Next G network. I think it may be the JL2 modem.
Actually, I don't know if all the Galaxy phones have the frequency available to use on that network. I think it's 850mhz. Maybe someone else could let me know if they all have the ability to use it, but have to have the right modem to use it.
I am currently using JVP with the ZSJPG modem. I have found that the JPg modem gives me great battery life with good reception too.
you can choose any rom
the only diffrent is in the battry life and the modem that you can
change.
You probably don't need to change anything. If you choose telstra as your carrier then you may need to flash an 850 compatible modem.
Also if you don't wish to enter the APN manually you could flash a CSC which includes Australian details.
I am personally running stock JVP 2.3.4 with XSA CSC. Nice and fast with brilliant battery life. The XSA CSC is also pre-configured for ALL Australian service providers.
I have used Juwe's and Criskelo both JVO and JVP without any problems.
My wife is using Simply Honey 3.6.1 and loves it, with no FC and great battery and Signal.
I would recommend all of them for Battery, signal and sound quality.
thanks for all the replies so it looks like I don't need to worry too much then.
Most roms and modems from 2.1 onwards work quite well here in Sydney.
Currently on Symply GS2 and have amazing reception and 3g speeds.
GPS is great.

Only thing to add is that you shouldn't count on 850 access even with a new modem file.
I just moved from UK to NZ and was told my UK phone wouldn't support 850 from a hardware perspective. Don't know if that its true as I've never tried it, but check your phone before choosing that provider! The rest of the providers, all use 900 etc should be fine without any new files.
I ended up keeping my UK Galaxy S on the stock UK firmware (they get released quicker anyway!) and manually typed in the apn settings for my provider. (I just avoided the provider here that used 850.)
Hope this helps. Good luck with the move.

no complaints, its awsome
if the OP post is well maintained and helpful, then this topic will be eligible as a permanent sticky
Im using a Bell SGS2 on Rogers as well. Was using KH3 on LeoMar ROM (TW4.5) and now using GingerMod still KH3 (Vanilla Android), Ninphetamine 2.1.3 kernel, and I must say the battery is much, much better on GingerMod.
Yes with the pending release of the Rogers official version, it would be a great idea to have this stickified.
I have KG5 and a Polish version of SGS2 on Rogers, bought from Expansya USA. It is stable, but the battery lasts 5-6 hours. Yes I am using 3G all the time.

rooted but stock rom.
Litening 6.1, KH3 modem and speedmod kernel. Bell unlocked running oo
n Rogers.
Bought from Bell, unlocked on Rogers, stock ROM, KG2, rooted. Fastest I've gotten so far is 6.10mbps down, 1.20mbps up @ 145ms ping in the KW area.
I'm located along st lawrence between Ottawa & Kingston...
Small town, only 2 towers...east and west
West end tower, from 8am-12am I get 0.05-3Mbps..usually around 0.5-1.5Mbps..almost always ~1Mbps up
East end tower, from 8am-12am I get 1-3Mbps..usually 2-3Mbps...so less congestion on that tower....same upstream, about 1Mbps
On west end from 12am-8am I get 5-7Mbps down, 1-3Mbps up
On east end from 12am-8am I get 5-14Mbps down, and 2-3Mbps up
So obviously problems with congestion depending on the time of day....
Been testing many modems, currently on KI1..I actually think it is working better for me than KH3. Download speeds seem better during daytime today (only installed this modem yesterday)...could just be luck, or this modem actually is better...not sure which....
KI1 I might actually have a little bit lower signal, but things just "feel" better....maybe it's a more accurate resemblance of actual signal though....idk...
Bell GT-I9100
DlevROM 1.3
SpeedMod K1-t40 kernel
Tried many different kernel's...ninphetamine seems to be my fav so far...but I'm testing out some others to see how well they work....
I get ~18 hours moderate use...that was on ninphetamine with 1.6ghz and undervolted...
on speedmod I seem to get ~41 hours with same usage... no overclock, no undervolting, obviously due to kernel....
same use on iphone 4 would have been 4-6 hours battery absolute max. even when it was brand new...
I always leave 3g on, fast dormancy disabled, wifi on about 65% of the time...
above battery ratings were tested on Cognition 1.5.1, and kernel noted in test sentence...
unsure about dlev as I just installed it yesterday, haven't calibrated or put it to the test.
Bought the Bell SGS2 when it launched here.
Rooted the stock KG2, used Galaxy_S Unlock to unlock the phone.
Used plenty of roms, and with my moderate usage, they honestly usually last me the day. Have yet to try CM7, will soon, but I just love the stock TW look.
Using KI4, 2.3.4 that was just released, with a lighter font, the modified TW4, and of course rooted with XEU CSC.
Amazing signal, better battery life than KG5, and Cognition 1.51 (At least for me, and it was quite a noticeable improvement)
Using it on Rogers, of course.
Waiting to use my hardware upgrade for either the iPhone 5 and selling that, or the SGS2 LTE and selling my Bell SGS2. We shall see.
Thanks for everyboby. I will maintained and helpful this thread.
We are here to help each other.

[Q] Galaxy Note 3 modem version - improves signal strength?

Hi,
I have had the note 3 since release here in the UK. I have a unlocked version from car phone warehouse on the three network. However I have poor signal at my desk at work if I hold my phone in the right spot I have H+, but the right 'spot' moves around unfortunately. According to their coverage map I should have LTE signal indoors and out. I do have 4g signal if I leave the building. (I am in the center of London)
So as it appears my signal is close but not quite good enough, I was wondering if there is a good modem firmware out there that people have found helps? I am running the latest software updates (the last 1 I installed was the KitKat upgrade).
Thanks in advance

Is there a good resource where I can get the latest modem version from?

Yes it is slightly newer by about a month. If you go over to the alexndr Rom thread in the android development section, in the first post he has just the odin package, its about 50mb.

Katkat modems don't seem to be any different btw, seems they've just rebundled and named the original one - Carrier modem *may* (I say may because I seen no difference) be tweaked slightly different but ultimately it's just a placeholder for APN settings really.
Indoors, always tricky.
It could be related to the frequency band your provider is using. The 800Mhz band penetrates solid concrete with ease, but the higher bands can't.
Any metal in the walls? Killer for any digital signal.
Does anyone else experience the same issues with other phones on the same provider in the same spot?
3G is always weaker than 2G, and 4G is even less powerful than 3G. (Because of the higher required frequency). Have you tried enforcing GSM mode? It'll kill your data speed, but at least you're more likely to get a signal.
Thanks for the help guys.
Yes other people have signal issues too, so I am just looking to get every ounce of signal strength I can.
I had a chat with my network last week and apparently before the end of the month they are rolling out a new spectrum but the support guy didn't know which frequency it was. he was confident it would fix my signal issues. (how true this is or not guess I will see!)
I have tried restricting to gsm and it is still unstable unfortunately
According to the coverage map, 4g signal in my post code is very strong, DC-HSPA i'm on the edge of a strong section. but right on the edge so I can understand dodgy signal. Ive just got my fingers crossed over the next few weeks
Silly suggestion, but... Have you tried opening a window? it could add just enough strength for the signal to stabilize.
