Hello Fellow Xperia PLAY owners.
I have a big question, Is there a way (or an app) that allow the PLAY to swap the volume keys functions when in landscape mode?
My previous phone (Samsung JET S8000 not so smart but nice looking) was able to do it, for example when I was using it on its vertical position (mostly when listening music or using the FM Radio) the Volume up and volume down keys did exactly that... up for volume up, down for volume down, however when I was using my phone on landscape mode (mostly for watching videos) the keys did exactly the opposite, up for volume down and down for volume up, and it felt so natural, (Which I think this is a normal configuration in our brains as all devices we have used taught us that the volume up is obtained normally by pressing the upper key or the key on the right side, and volume down is normally the lower key or the key to the left side... hell even the dials on old radios worked that way)
But for my surprise my loved play don't do it, when in landscape mode... volume up and volume down keys do exactly the same as in vertical position, which when in gaming is so Effffin' confusing and irritating.
Does anybody knows a solution or workaround for this situation?
Thanks
I'm Currently on the Stock 2.3.2 not rooted. and thinking on updating to 2.3.3 via SEUS.

Not that i know of.
I didnt even notice it until a couple of weeks ago.
In the vertical position, up is louder, down is quieter.
But in landscape this makes it, left is louder and right is quieter. Which is obviously the wrong way.
However, this is not anything worth bothering to fix imho. It doesnt bother me at least anyway.
Yeah, I though so too... because most of the time I have it on maxed volume and I regulate it on the MW600 I use most of the time... but yesterday my sister in law was playing Mario Bros on the Nesoid (or Snesoid) and she complained about it... because she was trying to turn the volume down... and it got really loudy bothering other people... jejeje.
She pointed me it was wrong... and I said mehh it's not a biggie, and then she punched my Ego by saying, I tought it was Smart... like the Iphone... (felt like a punch on my ego balls!!!).
I was trying to find a workaround so we can have a more complete set ... and also to shut her up (Iphone lover) jejeje

You should tell her to try and run mario on a nes emulator on her iphone and see how much she "enjoys" playing emulators with crappy touchscreen buttons.
Pretty sure the iPhone doesn't change the buttons for landscape either...
And as said, she should try completing a level of Mario on a touchscreen, that should shut her up, lol.
LOL, great idea. She actually owns a BB so I can ask her to try to play Mario on it jejeje.

If, like me, you have problems while using your HD2 like a music player... Here is the solution: don't stop the phone...
What I'm telling here is simple: It seems that, when using the poweroff/sleep/red button, the phone goes into sleep a little to deeply to be able to play music. You'll have music break or just stopping at the end of the track.
My solution is to "just" lock the phone (Start => Lock) and then, in the pocket... It will sleep by it-self soon.
Another key feature I was unable to use if I "force sleep" my phone is to change the playing volume... Try by your self and tell me if it helps you too
no problem here playing music after pressing the red button to send to phone to sleep. music plays fine for hours.

Mine works also fine
Sorry for the bump but im having a different issue with the music tab, some1 might know a solution and i didnt feel like adding a new thread for something this 'small'
Well, i just today got my phone, and ive (obviouslly) been playing with it a bit, but something akward has happend, at first, when in the music tab, the side button controled the volume of the music, but now (hell idk what i did) it suddenlly changes the tracks when i press volume up/down.
(btw, did you guys get manuals? i just got a quick start wich doesnt cover half the tabs, including music tab)
I must have pushed something somewhere, but im clueless, anyone know what it could be?
I've never normally noticed any problems playing music with the phone on or in stand-by. Although when its plugged in and charging, FM radio does tend to freeze a few miliseconds every 30 seconds. But on battery power everything is just fine
don't have this problem :S
Actually, about my issue, i solved it, in a way you could say its a audio-plug-bug (like seen before in htc devices) i plugged in the headset and now its volume again, ive tried some stuff like unplugging while playing, on music or other tab, but wasnt able to reproduce yet, strange.

I've got no problems playing music and locking device. However, I have the volume key issue and the only thing that fixes it is a soft reset. I haven't been able to work out why it starts changing tracks instead of volume to start with. Anyone got any suggestions?

I had this issue just today, on top of the numerous other issues ive had. I did a soft reset and the volume buttons started behaving again.
However i noticed a different bug with the headphones. When i was listening to music on them and the phone locked, when i tried to unlock it by sliding the lock slider, i found the screen completely unresponsive. Unplug the phones and the screen responded. plug them back in, unresponsive. Maybe unplugging the phones would have solved the volume keys misbehaving as well, as it did for you. i dont think i tried that at the time.
This unit is so full of bugs, i have resigned myself to returning it overseas. A total pain at Xmas.
Man this is getting frustrating! My music player won't play any music from my microSDHC card now. It finds all of my songs, but I can only listen to about 10seconds before it locks up. I see the little circle-thingie in the left corner spinning and as soon as it stops the music player crashes.
same as above
I have the exact same problem as Toss3 above, couldn't describe it better.
It was working fine though, until i added some new folders. It always happens quite early in the song, so i tend to think that it's scanning the library in the background (the circle 'busy' animation) and it's encountering a corrupt file and is crashing (or at least a file the player considers as corrupt, because all those files work fine on my computer or iPod Classic).
So i'm really bothered, any help from you Toss3, if you find the solution, or from anybody else would be very appreciated.
Is there a registry setting to lower the amount the volume is increased/decreased when the volume rocker is used in "lock screen" mode.
What I want is to be able to set the volume more precisely when I play my music. The current setting doesn't allow me to do that. The minimum amount in which I can regulate the volume is 20%.
10% of better 5% would be much better.
Thanks.
Yeah most annoying, seems the norm nowadays
+1, Yeah, very annoying when listenning to music. Anyone has an idea?
i was also searching for a mod for that...
can some genius pls help us? thx!
Many this app will help some, if not all of you !
It's a freeware developed by a member of this forum and it serves the simple purpose of allowing to set "volume steps" and replacing the default volume window. It's brilliant.
Work is still in progress, but it's already a must have at this point. Still some issues...

I asked exactly the same question about a year ago when I bought my Touch HD! I'm glad that someone is finally doing something about it. It looks like their little project only started a few weeks ago, so hopefully in another few weeks it will be great.
Will be all over this when done, bit buggy at the moment though.
Hi, wanted to briefly comment on my largely positive HD2 & skiing experience.
Video
Worked fine right down to about -15c (-25 with wind chill), noticed some jerks in recording but cant say if it was cold related, Here is the HD2 video I made.
Bear in mind that some videos had gamma/brightness adjustments.
Camera
Yea, not too bad after the HTC camera patch, the last image at the end of the video is a (curve adjusted) photo taken with HD2. I was impressed with the camera under some conditions (medium-good light levels and little movement), still not in the same league as an N95 especially in low light conditions.
Music application
Worked OK, but its still pretty lame, making the experience quite frustrating:
1. no volume control on the headphone piece
2. long pauses while (large) playlist loads, why is this not cached???
3. Cant use your own headphones with remote (like Nokia) so had to use crappy HTC ones
4. Scrolling large lists in the cold! (I believe there is a scroll bar in 1.6x)
5. loads more niggles
General
No problems most of the time but a couple of times in extreme cold (-15) I found the keyboard became really erratic and once it even completely stopped responding. I also noticed that coming in from the extreme cold quite a lot of fog behind the screen, this cleared up after the phone warmed up with no ill effects.
All in all I was happy, BUT I was pretty pissed off to find, after running for the plane, a scratch on the screen, keys or coins the culprit.. just shows how wrong the unscratchable claims are!
Sorry to hear about the scratch on your screen. You should have listened to your head and bought a screen protector. It's not too late.....
WB
And you really should have tested the SatSki application, then you could also have tested the GPS functionality.
Had this application already running on my previous phone, excellent application for skieers and on the big HD2 screen it is really handy.
I've downloaded Satski and will be trying it in Les Deux Alpes in a couple of weeks, will report how it goes.
I must admit I noticed the same thing about not being able to ajust the volume using the remote on the headset. That's a real pain.
Also intending to buy some new thin gloves for using the phone poss The North Face E-Tip or Blacks do their own version which I tried in store and they work ok (perfect for texting your mate at work while you're have a beer on the slope)
Headset
I use my HD2 when snowboarding with Jabra bt620s bluetooth headset. It works great and I can adjust the volume, skip songs and answer calls with buttoms on the headset. And its nice not to worry about wires.

What I really need is a camera that can look out for groups of you sitting down just after the brow of a hill.

Hi.
I'm on the fence on switching from an iPhone 3G to an xperia play. I'm kind of hesitant about the music control in xperia play, since I've never used Android before but the gamepad is slowly drawing me in since the iPhone emulation scene (the ones that I like) is mostly dead due to zodttd quiting ios and pandora scene.
Here are my questions:
1. Does this phone have a shortcut like the iphone where you can quickly control the music by pressing the home button twice and clicking on a media playback icon?
2. Does number 1 work when the phone is on sleep like the iphone?
3. Can 2 be done on just inside the pocket of you pants with minimal eye contact with the phone?
4. Does the position of the 3.5 jack feel weird/flaky when the phone is vertically set in your pocket with earphones attached?
5. Is it worth buying the phone now? I'm thinking this phone will end up being worth $350 at some point in a few months here? It's currently $534 here. I'm thinking of either waiting for the iPhone5 or buying this.
6. Is true this phone is picky on earphones? I tend to break my earphones (only one ear works) a lot so I tend to buy cheap ones. I think I've broken 3 official iphone headsets, 2 sony earphones and 2 sennheiser earphones, so cheap is in for me as of now.
7. I'd also like to ask if there is an application like flicktunes where you can control the player by flicking up, right, left, down with one or two fingers?
Thanks in advance.
Let me have a crack at this
1. You have shortcuts for almost anything on any android device.
Configure it the way you please for any application, with settings & options almost unlimited.
2.You need to specify if you mean phone is in sleep mode with the screen guard enabled or not.
If you are talking wen screen guard in enabled, certain apps have an option to not let the phone lock.
3. i'll skip this cos am not sure why you want to do this.. it's not very difficult to pull the phone out and stop music (or whatever) from the notification bar.
4. Feels quite fine.
5. IS it worth buying this phone? am not sure about that.. depends on your preference. but my advice would be an android device is a definitely more user friendly and customizable.. and free.. open source remember
6. any kind of ear phone will work... keep ur ears safe
7. almost any app there is for the iphone or windows fone or anything that has some usability, there is an android app.
thanks for asking!
I was a former 3GS owner and I can't say enough good things about the Xperia Play. I don't miss my iPhone at all.
The only gripe I have is that the level of brightness is never going to be as high as it is on the iPhone. Other than that you can customize Android to do a lot of things like the iPhone. Starting music is as easy as putting a music control widget on your homescreen. If you root you can also use a button remapper app to map media controls to any hardware key on the device, so in your pocket... easy to play/stop/ff/rewind with blind button pushing. You can even use an app called Tasker to do even further automation of almost any kind.
The headphones jack feels solid, never flakes on me, doesn't feel weird on the side. I use Sony Bluetooth headphones 90% of the time and it never has problems connecting either (cords annoy me on any device).
If you like emulation and games, get this device. It's easily the best phone to handle it. Touchscreen gaming will never be able to match the tactile response and level of control you get from real built-in controller keys, period.

1. There is a music widget, which you can place on any one of your homescreens, which has all the controls.
2. I'm not sure how you can use on screen controls while the screen is off...considering this isn't possible on iphone either I'll assume you mean lock screen controls, in which case yes, you can.
3. If you have an in-line remote you can. I've also heard of assigning long press volume up and down for next and previous track, for pocket navigation.
4. If you have a 90 degree jack on your earphones, then it's fine.
5. That's all a matter of opinion. In my opinion, I'd much rather go for the play rather than the iphone, ESPECIALLY if your doing console emulation. On screen controllers have NOTHING on physical buttons, period.
6. No, no issues here.
7. Yes, because you can download different music players in the market, you can choose the one that best suits your needs. I have seen ones with gesture controls.
All in all, in the switch to Android you can literally feel the grip on your balls loosen once you figure out all the options you have.
If you are going to use headphones for listening to music, you can install poweramp and use heatphone button to control your music. A single press of the headphone button can be used to start or pause the music. Similarly double press can be used to skip to next track and triple press to skip to previous track.

Yes it is. If your iphone is in sleep mode you can double click the home button and it brings up the music player. You don't need to unlock the home screen.
And no I could not do this from the play. It would be nice.
I also came from the 3GS. It is different for sure but worth the adjustment.

You completely missed the first part of the sentence, I was obviously referring to something else. I didn't know about the double click home while sleeping while playing music feature.
And i was simply telling you about it. I didn't mean to offend you.
Thanks for all the replies most of them were really helpful. I'm still on the fence though since I'm still thinking of the number of apps in the app store vs android market (I have an ipad, so this point maybe moot except for camera apps).
I am also worried about the possibility of a follow-up to this phone and the dpad functionality on fighting games (see other thread). I'll probably buy the XP (if ever) after 2 weeks since the Zagg here will only have it by then (Considering buying the dock and too lazy too remove case every time).
Hopefully I'll adapt to the quickly to the controls in the widgets and the syncing using iTunes through 3rd party software.

DoubleTwist has this option, puts a skip/pause and play controls on its own lock screen. there is also a tap to unlock button which then goes to the handsets lock screen.
Coming from iPhone its also great as the desktop app uses iTunes and has wireless syncing as well.

Have the iPad and the play, you won't miss anything if you have both
I am just using the default Samsung music app, so maybe a simple player switch will suffice...
I am coming from a iPhone 5. One thing the iPhone does very well is play music. There are a copy of issues with my S4 in this regard that are driving me crazy, I am hoping you guys can help me resolve them:
1. Volume rocker on headphones does not control music volume. As far as I can tell the volume rocker just doesnt do anything at all. Is there a way to make this control music / voice levels? Very annoying having to fish for the phone to actually move the volume rocker.
2. Previous doesnt work. On the iPhone you can triple click the button on the headset to either restart the current song or go back to the previous song that was playing before. I used this quite often as i sometimes like to Binge on a particular soundtrack. This does not seem to work currently, triple pressing the button simply goes to the next song (double tap) and then pauses (single tap).
Loving the S4 so far, I definitely hope the above is something that is possible to fix though. Thanks a lot guys!
Try google play music? The volume thing worked on my s3 however I've yet to test ion s4... Also i use poweramp
sgh-i747(d2att)(sgs3) on latest cm10.1 or ultimatum
my headphones work on the s4 so far... volume and pause/skip tracks also works. single tap button to pause, double tap to skip etc. maybe u got a faulty headset?
Yeah sounds like a faulty headset...mine works

Or push it further in maybe? It seems to be hard at first to press in the headphone all the way... loosen up over time
