My Tab is brand new from Staples bought yesterday. After unpacking and charging,
wi-fi won't connect to my Verizon DSL wireless router. The Tab has v3.0.1 software.
I've read about plenty of wi-fi issues with the 3.1 upgrade, but, are there know issues with v 3.0.1 software.
I am looking for suggestions and help. Thanks

a little more info might help, like what the wifi does, does it just join, but just says remember, or does it not find at all, or does wifi say error completely??

Thanks for your reply.
I never got connected. It says trying to obtain an IP address, or something like that. I also tried several resets using the paper clip procedure to no avail.
And is your router secured with a key? If so, were you prompted to add it before trying to connect? Did you add it correctly?

It never asked for the password because it never got an IP address assigned to it.

It can't get an IP address unless it has the WEP key to connect to it.
I take it your router isn't secured then.
Or maybe it's different for DSL *shrug* I don't know.

I may be wrong, but I think it must first have an IP address assigned to it by the router. Then, you must give the password to get connected.
That's how it works for my laptops and iPod Touches.

I don't know. That might very well be a "DSL" thing. But in order to connect to a wireless router (which has been secured with a WEP key) one must first add the WEP key to the device then, and only then, will the device be able to connect - not the other way around.
Don't confuse 'password' with 'WEP key'. While their job is similar (preventing unauthorized users from connecting) the lack of a WEP key prevents connection, period, while a password requires a connection first.
But like I said, for DSL routers, maybe it's different - the only thing I can think of would be for you to log into your router from your laptop/desktop and check the wireless settings to see if it is indeed secured with a key - if so, write it down and try again from the tab, making sure that you input the key before it tries to connect.
Of course it *could* be a hardware issue. but it sounds to me like you're missing something.

If it says it is still waiting for an IP address, I can't type anything in....WEP key or password. I may have not been clear with the problem. It "sees" my router, but is constantly trying to obtain an IP address. Sorry for the confusion.
There's no confusion. Of course it will see your router if the router is broadcasting its SSID. That still doesn't mean you *can* connect to it.
Log into your router and check if your wireless is secured with a key. If it is, then you need to add it to your tab *before* it can get an IP address. I can't be any clearer about that.

Ok, thanks. I know the WEP key. But I don't low how\where to enter it into the Tab. I would appreciate it if you could post step by step instructions. Up till now, I have been trying to follow what the Acer manual pdf says:
"If you did not connect to a Wi-Fi network when you first started your tablet, or want to connect to a new network, tap Apps > Settings > Wireless & networks to manage your connection settings. Alternatively, tap the Wi-Fi status icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
If Wi-Fi is not on, tap Turn on Wi-Fi, and wait for your tablet to detect nearby networks. Tap the name of your network and enter a security password, if needed."
Right. Click on the network, add the WEP key where it says 'password'.
I'll try it later when I get home from work and will post my results. Thanks for you help.
What you're doing sounds strange. I too have a DSL router, but it works no different than any other router I've ever had. I've had several Android devices including tablets, and they all work the same. When you try to connect to a protected network, it will prompt you for a password. It cannot obtain an IP without the password, this step occurs after the password verification.
I have had issues where my remembered networks just sometimes sit at "Obtaining an IP address...", and never connect. Usually a reboot solves this problem. I tend to have more issues with WPA networks than WEP, but almost nobody uses WEP anymore.
But, there really shouldn't be a trick to it. Click on the network and it will prompt you for a password (WEP or WPA, works the same). If you've already done this, try rebooting.
I've never had the experience that jostarr has, where I needed to enter a key before a password.
Otherwise, like one of the other posters stated, it could be a hardware issue.
Problem solved.
I tried the Factory Reset from the settings menu. It took a few minutes to reset and reboot. A s soon as I went to the Wi-Fi settings, it found my router, got great signal strength, and was asked for my password. It then connected immediately.
I then went to settings, and looked for any updates. It found the latest update, so I downloaded and installed OS v3.1. It took about 1 hour to complete the download and installation. My tab works great now. I could not be more pleased with it.
Many thanks to all on this forum and elsewhere who contributed their suggestions and advice.
congrats on solving your issue Jostarr. I'm happy you got it worked out.

I have a ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A Wireless router. I have tried all combinations of security, even NO SECURITY WHATSOEVER, and still the device won't transfer data.
Not working;
Firmware: 1.5, Build: CR817
Wifi Router: ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A
Security: Tried All; WPA2, WPA, WEP & None.
Problem: Connect under all conditions but no data is sent
Please help.
Have you tried another WiFi access point to check the devices WiFi module actually functions?
No, I haven't tried that yet, but don't really see the point... I've connected effortlessly to the same WiFi network with my HTC Touch Diamond.

For some reason my N800 wouldn't connect to MY ZyXEL P-2602HW-D1A unless I set the device (N800) to disable any kind of wifi powersaving features it had.
On another note, how did you get your hands on the device so early? I'm guessing you are using a Cybercity internet connection? (I'm in copenhagen myself)
edit: I actually came to that solution when i noticed I could connect to OTHER accespoints, but not the Zyxel ones.
Same problem here in France with a Freebox as router
I've noticed under the router's WLAN client list that the device does not have a "Host Name". Would that present a problem?
It is assigned an IP address by the router without any problems, though.
Also the device seems to lose connection and reconnect constantly (every 5-10 seconds).
I done some digging around in the router settings and found an "AnyIP" feature. Would that possibly help?
There are a number of issues floating around. Support for WPA2 seems iffy and some people can just change to WPA or WEP and all work fine.
There are however a number of people (such as me) who can get a connection perfectly, it shows connection OK, they get an IP from the DHCP server etc, they can even browse a page for a few seconds... but after that no data is sent and everything times out. This is happening on any security from none through to WPA2.
I have seen no solution to this anywhere and believe me I have looked. Some people have given up and got a new router, but this is not a solution.
Can someone confirm that this has been recognised as a fault with the magic and is being investigated, rather then assuming it's a user or router error. There are far too many instances of this across many brands of router for it not to be an issue with the HTC Magic.

What I mean is have you tested the device on ANY other AP except the ZyXEL?
No, but since I'm by far the only one having this issue (try searching the web; see my last post), I didn't feel it was necessary. Just want some input from xda-dev that might solve the problem, if any.

I've had exactly the same problem earlier with the N800 on the zyxel. Exactly how you describe it.
Did you find out if you could turn off any powersaving features on the HTC?
same problem here
in france with a freebox
I don't exaclty know what router is in the box
but I have excalty the same
I set on never the wifi sleep(powersaving) mode.
i found it in setting wifi menu button then advanced and "never"
but the problem is still here

I also have this problem. Im in Denmark with a Zyxel P660HW-p1.
Another user of Cybercity in Denmark with the same problem.
ZyXEL P-660HW-D1
The android is the only device that doesn't work. I have tried with Iphone and laptops.
I've tried to change the settings on the router to no avail.
Enable 802.11g+ mode [on/off]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
RTS/CTS Threshold [2432/4096]
Max. Frame Burst [600/1800]
The device shows up in the device list with no hostname, the HTC Magic gets the right ip address (using the program WhatIsMyIp to view it)
I had the same problem before, when I set my TP-LINK draft N router with WEP security my HD can see it, connect to it (but speed was slow tho), and my HTC Magic just keep saying its not in range. However, when I set it to open security it works, so I recognise its probably the security setting... so I changed that to WPA2 and then it works.
In my case, I see different device have different tolerance to some settings (in my case, draft N + WEP is OK with laptop, HTC HD, but not Magic), so its still worthwhile to try a few different settings, and try a public wireless access point also to double confirm?
Power save?
I have Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router.
I had exactly the same problem with my HTC Vox (winmo)... but that was solved by boosting the WiFi in the phone.
WiFi -> Best performance
So Im guessing magic is in some WiFi "power save" mode...
I dont know how this works, but I thought maybe you could change some WiFi settings behind the hood - that is if the hardware is capable of it.
Zyxel (P-2602R-D1A) router
I am having the same issue with this router as the other posters. The phone connects perfectly and reports an excellent signal, but barely sends or receives any data. I have used a terminal emulator to ping the router and it reports an 82% packet loss. This must be a big problem for many Danish users as it is the standard wifi router provided by two of the major ISP's.
same issue here with my vodafone uk magic.
wifi connects and i can browse for a few seconds then get a connection error and can't browse until i re-start wifi on the magic...
i've actually given up using wifi at home now due to this.
router is a talktalk supplied Huawei Echolife HG520b using 128 bit WEP
i can connect fine via wifi at the office so i don't think it's an issue with the handset, just with certain routers or router configs...
this issue has been reported on the vodafone uk forums but as yet no solution.

Please help, ive had my hd2 for a few days now and have had nothing but problems, might just give it back!
It picks up my home router but simplify wont connect, it just displays a small rotating circle likes it working but nothings happening.
When i remove the settings and retype the key code it keeps saying incorrect code but it isnt,
Anyone any ideas, can i some how reset the wifi settings, its taken me a few days to customize the phone so i dont really want to do a hardwear reset. Ive already a software restset.
Bloody htc!
What protocal are you using on your router? WPA, WEP?
Oh if your using an older Belkin router, I know of about 3-4 models that used to have trouble with WinMo, an update Router flash fixes it though.
Give us some more info on your router etc and Im sure we can help though
Sure your using the right password/key? if it says its wrongs it is probably wrong lol. Maybe try changing it to a more basic password as a test? like "password" and see if it can get connect.

Hi
Calm down. Give some information about your router and the type of security You use.
try these
1. Reset the router once
2. If you use MAc access list on the router then add your device's MAC to the list.
3. If you use N router then in the settings untick N mode protection.
Give more details about the third party software on the hd2 using radios (eg: tomtom, igo, gpstuner like these)
Good luck
HI guys thanks for helping out.
Obvious first - yes the key code is correct i use it on my laptop and iphone.
security mode says WAP-PSK/WPA2-PSK. Its a siemens ive been on the ip server addres and cant see any issues, im on my laptop using the wifi now and its working perfet.
Ive tried everything, changing passwords, settings both on the router and on the phone.
The hd2 is full of really stupid bugs!
Try to hardreset the PPC.
If it won't work, try to update your ROM to the latest available.
If it doesn't want to work, then try to connect to another WiFi without password and see the connection is successful.
If it works with an unprotected WiFi, try to connect to a different router but with protected WiFi.
If it works, then there is a problem with your router and I suggest to update your router's firmware.
funny wifi
the problem wit my hd2 is most of the time it shows wifi connected but i cant surf the internet and sometimes out of the blues it connects to the internet, cant figure out wats happening....

Have you found the solution? I can help you my friend i had the same situation
I tried to connect yesterday my hd2 with my router. First it wasnt working aswell. Then i set the next things. Channel 9 (was auto), Encryption AES (was tkip and AES). Network mode is Mixed. Further have you installed Mac Filter? I installed this also. So if i have a connection thats it. I must fill in my macadres from my phone for i get fully connected.
Hi guys thanks all for you help call HTC UK support and their amazing advice was to do a full hard reset!
I really am having a lot of problems with this phone and i cant understand why their have been so many issues?!
Hi guys,
I have the same problem- HD2 shows it is connected, but no access to Internet(other- laptop, SE990 phone is connected and working OK)
For not to write about all, now situation is:
1. On router wrt54g2 temporary disabled wireless security, only mac filtering is on(laptop mac, SE mac, HD2 mac is allowed), router firmware is up to date
2.HD2 is like new after hard reset, no settings is done for connection to home network. HD2 wifi is on, looking for access points and connecting to only one available open network in my area- to my home network and shows it is connected but no access to Internet.
3. In router I can see all connected clients by mac. All 3(lap, SE, HD2) are connected. I use Network Magic software too but it is showing only my laptop and desktop are connected. SE is not connected according NM, but it is working OK.
P.S.
Do not know what else can help you in my problem(maybe some other router setting, but as other devices are connected without problems so maybe it is not important for now)
So only my HD2 can not access WWW
Can You guys help somehow please
I've got a similar problem with an HD2 over here. Wifi does switch on, but it just won't connect to my router. The cirkel that is supposed to show when connecting to a network doesn't show either. I'm using WPA2-AES security, and yes, i did use the proper network key. I haven't tried connecting to other networks/using an alternative encryption method because a lot of other devices will then have to be reconfigured and it's not my own place. My Touch HD and 2 laptop connect to the network without any problems. The only solution I came across until now is doing a hard reset, which I would rather not do... I'm using a stock dutch rom (V1.43). Is it possible that upgrading to the newer 1.48 will solve this problem?
Have you tried removing the wireless security password and trying again? Test to see if maybe you are indeed typing in the password wrong.
Also check your exception list on your router, it might be blocking any other devices coming in.
I have the same problem.. Get the spinning loading circle and thats it.. But if i turn my belkin wires g router running wpa2 off then straight back on again the phone connects fine. But if i then leave my house or disconnect from the network then try and reconnect it wont and have to do the same process again. Luckily im also running a speedtouch 585 modem router which the phone connects fine to.
hey maybe it takes only a WEP key and not WPA as most people have. this is certainly the case as mentioned in the Wifi router article below -
http://www.mobilityminded.com/5438/wi-fi-router-on-htc-hd2-application-overview

It seems that it is problem with my router. HD2 was able to connect to open wireless a.p. in my town and all sow to my friends router which is using WPA security. So my linksys is not compatible, or i will try some other settings on it, but as other router clients have no problems, i am loosing my hope to have my HD2 connected at home unless i change router. But then another problem- which router will be compatible with all my devices in prise range of 100$
And replying to blackheart2925 my friend is using wpa not wep, i do not know other settings on his router but it is not security problem.
One thing is strange for my HD2 shows it is connected, router shows mac of HD2 among connected clients, but only HD2 do not have access to internet

If your HD2 connects to router but you cannot enter any web site, do this:
SOLUTION:
enter your www router settings - wireless - access control - MAC Address Filtering Table ->>>>> add your HD2 MAC adress
enter your www router settings - firewall - access control ->>>>> add your HD2 MAC adress
so, you have to add your MAC adress of HD2 into router TWO TIMES into TWO PLACES!

Hi All,
Just got my new HTC HD2 from Virgin, however I cannot for the life of me seem to connect it to my home WiFi (I've not tried it elsewhere yet).
I've still got my MDA Compact IV here with me and use the same settings as the HD2 and that connects first time no problems, but the HD2 isnt playing ball!
It sees my wireless network at home (full strength) and starts to connect then simply says "Available". No notification of incorrect wireless key etc...reported.
I have used my Compact IV side by side with the HD2 and no issues so I am puzzled as to what I need to do now
Any help would be appreciated.
Thank

if you are using wep, heres something to try.
routers can be set to three types of wep key
open
open or shared
shared
in my experience if you areset to the middle one, "open or shared" mobile devices can have trouble connecting.try setting it to just "shared"instead.
course it could just be my router but I have seen this behavior in three mobiles including my hd2.

Current ROM version is 1.48.405.2 (71294) WWE and radio version 2.05.51.05.2
Its most annoying that the HD2 on the face of it seems like a really good handset but then I cant get the Wifi connected which most basic handsets have no issues with
Any other possible solutions?

I had the same issue when I applied hint 39 from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=583638
Result: couldn't connect to my network with WPA2.

I had this issue too, could see my home Wifi network, but the device would just say, "Incorrect Network Key". But it was correct!
I now have it working strangely by changing router Security Options to (WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK)

my advise is disabling WEP password in both HD2 and the router.
it works perfectly.

My WiFi was working fine on my Xoom, and now it gets stuck while "obtaining IP address." It says for a split second "remembered" as if it was connected and starts the ongoing circular process of "obtaining IP address" all over again. I saw that galaxy tab users had this same problem and found a resolution by connecting "static" instead of "DHCP." I didn't try that as I honestly don't know how. What I do know is that there are a few devices like my OG droid, my laptop, my mothers' laptop, my xbox 360 that are connected to the same WiFi network. This randomly happened, when I decided to disconnect from WiFi to run a speed test on 3G and I was unable to connect to WiFi ever since. I tried unplugging/plugging the routers, turning the Xoom off and on, and even went so far as to doing a factory reset on the Xoom and I still can't connect. 3G works fine, but I have a 1GB cap and I would rather only use that while I'm on the go, and obviously WiFi is definitely faster. If I can't resolve this, I still have enough time to return this thing. Call me a newb, but I need a little help!
I know you said you did a factory reset, but google stores wifi passwords in the cloud now. Try making the xoom forget the network you're trying to connect to.
My only other thought is that you need to go into your router's configuration and remove the xoom as a remembered device.

How do I get the xoom to forget the network? How do I remove the xoom as a remembered device? Sorry but I really don't know how to do that..
EDIT: I went into settings>privacy>backup and restore> and unchecked "back up application data, Wi-Fi passwords, and other settings to googles servers and was still unable to connect.
I think if you long press on the wifi network it will give you the option to forget it.
As for the router, do you remember setting it up? The settings pages where you set the wifi name and password and such.. it should have a section where it tells you which devices are connected.
I have pressed "forget network" on the xoom several times when trying to connect. As for the router, do I remember setting it up? No, as a matter of fact I didn't set it up. Could I configure this thing from my laptop?

Of course, anything that's connected to the router should let you configure it. It's too complex to explain here, but you need to enter the router through it's IP address and find the configuration.
Find the manual for the router you have and go from there.
I'll try to look into that, any idea as to wtf happened? This is beyond an inconvenience..
I'm having much the same problem. After entering the passphrase it says 'obtaining ip address from....' and thats all. It never connects??? I have tried 'forget' several times and no luck.
I have been able to connect to unsecured wifi with no problems.
Use the free app "wifi static". Config to assign you a static IP on that network only and dhcp on others. Its something within android as I have the same issue in my phone with a few networks but not most.

OK, tried it. NO GO! After entering the passphrase it STILL says 'obtaining ip address from....' I may be doing something wrong with the app since it comes with absolutely NO directions. If this is going to be an issue average folks will take it back!
Have any of you with this issue verified that the DHCP scope on the wireless network is not full or that DHCP is even allowed? The fact it works one place but not another tells me the issue may be with the network and not the device.

I was having the same issues as you originally at first until I reset my router and my Xoom.

I also had this issue, I ended up fixing it by upgrading my router BIOS. the version that was on there was dated 2004 (yikes), and though the most current update was only 2006, it seems to have fixed the problem.
That or the reboot after the update as previous poster said and the update didn't really have anything to do with it, but either way it got fixed.
I just bought a Rogers arc and everything is great so far, except the wifi. For whatever reason when i try to connect to my home network, although it recognizes it and connects i get a "limited connectivity" which effectively does not allow me to use wifi at all. ive tryed rebooting the phone and reseting my router (which is a D-link DI-524.) any help would be appreciated.
you could go in the router settings and register the phones mac address to a ip of your choice. it should do the trick i think...
I finally figured out what the problem was, i had to update the firmware on the router and then manually add the MAC address like dogggie said and after a reboot voila!
I don't want to make another thread since my problem is similar to this one. So in my school there is a hiden Wi-FI network and it has got a password, but we know Name and Password, so we can connect to Wi-Fi. But here is the thing: My friend who has SGS2 connect's without any problems, but everytime I try to connect to Wi-FI i get "Limited Connectivity" mesage. Is there any way to fix this? Can I somehow get Gateway and Netmask from router, so I can set static IP on my phone or sometheing like that?
Thanks for answers.

Zanimivo, na kero šolo hodš?
I have the same problem. Hidden Wi-Fi in school, limited connectivity. Works for some people, doesn't for most.
I have used CM7 for some time and the Wi-Fi worked with it, but I flashed the stock ROM back and now, again, it doesn't work.
Oo, another one form Slovenia Lep pozdrav. Šola je pa TŠC Kranj.
It also worked for me when I was testing Offical Beta ICS, but now I am back on stock 2.3.4 and all I can get is limited conectivity

Same school.
Today it works. I have just manual set gateway, DNS servers, netmask and my own IP.
Cool. Mind sharing the values you used?
