Hey NOOKERS!
Got my wife a nook for Mothers Day. Had to fly out of the country the next day and never got around to doing more than charge it up for her.
She does not want to touch it until I can "hack" it to allow it to be an android tablet with both B&N books and Kindle, plus of course all the web browsing / music playing stuff.
I'm fairly comfortable, having messed with both my Samsung Moment and my Epic too.
But -
Is there a guide? Step by Step to go from a STOCK 1.2 device to Cyanogenmod7, and then back again if she hates it and I need to return it?
Interested in getting an answer on this too, particularly if there is a way to reverting back to stock, even tho I already rooted with manual nooter then flashed CM7.....
And so I guess... we WAIT.

Getting back to stock should be as simple as building a CWR bootable SD card with one of these images:
http://mrm3.net/nook-color-updated-clockwork-recovery-bootable-sd/
Then booting into CWR, formatting the applicable partitions, flashing the stock 1.2 Rom that's been posted in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
Now, I'm pretty new to this stuff, but I think that should work. I installed Phiremod on my NC this weekend following the above procedure.
Thanks for the links, and I'll surly look at them - but I can't afford an "I think it should work".
I need steps that WILL work (unless I pour coffee into it while I'm doing the process...)
You should install CM7 on a bootable SD card. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000957
If you don't like it, remove the card, and you are back to stock.

Post #4 from my second link gives instructions:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13200403&postcount=4
Basically same thing I told you.
Ok. trying it from an SD card.
Question - if I want to go ahead and Root/Install this to the NOOK itself, can I somehow keep all the setup that wife does to the OS on the SD card?
I can wright a guild tonight some time and post it up I have done this a ton of times back and forth from 1.2/cm7 and dual booting cm7 and 1.2 lol my nook has been all over the place... lol I'm a flashaholic
Thanks to all who contributed!!!

Looking forward to seeing it!
Wife is loving it, but now I guess I want to take what she's been playing with and put it on the "device" instead of the SD card, so she can use the SD card to store music and other stuff.
But I really do need the "set it back to normal" capability too, so that if the damn thing messes up horribly some how I can get it warranty repaired. I just don't have that kind of free $ to "throw it away"...
@n0xx187 -
Any update on your little guide?
Thanks!
Hey amigo... just checkin in to see how that guide is coming!
I'm looking forward to seeing a guide as well since I've forgotten the steps I took with my Nook pre-1.2, and am ready to install CM7 on a Nook for my friend.
For instructions on how to install CM7 on your internal drive in the Nook (EMMC):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Also contains a link to the directions to restore your nook to stock 1.2 (there is a different guide for previous revs, but you said 1.2):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1050520
The two zips linked there differ in that 1 uninstalls CWM assuming you have it flashed to EMMC, and the other doesn't.
I've used both guides (installed CM7 to EMMC, reverted to stock 1.2 and removed CWM, installed a different nightly of CM7, etc) and they are straightforward and take you every step of the way as long as you understand the terminology involved (emmc vs SD) and can follow directions without skipping steps.
If you are wanting to dual boot that is a completely different beast and there are threads for it in the Development sub-forum here.
Just a caveat - you won't be able to use the B&N native ereader app in CM7, and the nook for android app is having some issues right now that haven't been corrected yet (menu insensitivity, some people report that syncing to their library is failing), so if that's important to your wife that's a consideration vs rooting stock B&N (that in and of itself has issues just like any of the roms for the Nook Color, you can read up on them in their own threads (manual nooter, mini nooter, autonooter, etc))

Thanks. The wife has hundreds of KINDLE books, has yet to buy one from B&N. The purpose of this process is to enable BOTH on this cool little device.
And the "guide" we've been looking for is "How do I take what's installed on the flash card" (she's been using CM7 from a 2gb flash) and MOVE it to the EMMC. (and of course, return it to stock if something goes wrong in a horrible way.)

Ah, I had read your OP and assumed things hadn't changed (my bad, read further down and saw that you installed CM7 to SD).
In this case, you could use Titanium Backup to back up all the apps + app data and restore them to the new install on EMMC - I wouldn't back up system data however. It would require minimal re-setup (cyanogenmod settings, some system settings) but would retain launcher settings (desktop, status bar, dock, etc) because the app info would be saved in a backup. You would have to copy separate user data manually (e.g., transferring folders in USB storage mode to your PC and back to your Nook after installing CM7).
I do not know if a nandroid backup / restore would work if you are switching from CM7 SD to EMMC. I prefer using TiBu since youc an choose to transfer only apps + app data on a fresh CM7 install.

If you're running a NOOK Color with 1.2, didn't you run into "error formatting /data"? If so, how did you get past it?
Mine came with the original 1.1 firmware., which I updated to 1.2 from the downloaded file...
but I am hearing things about re-partitioning and things on new ones... does that impact "upgraded" ones?
I bought the Nook a couple of days ago and it has the blue dot on the box which means it's a 1.2 version. Anyway, I did a back up and saved it to my SD card. I assume the back up is in the folder called "clockworkmod" because it has a subfolder named "backup" with the following files:
boot
cache
data
nandroid.md5
system
With that said, I no longer want this tablet. I guess I wanted a tablet but I found the experience wasn't what I expected. So, I would like to go back to stock, just the way I had it when I removed the Nook from the box. However, most of the guides around here and elsewhere talk about returning a Nook to a version other than 1.2.
Let me also mention that I'm not sure if I actually "rooted" my Nook because I never used ManualRooter. I put in CWM, CM7, and Gapps following this guide:
Code:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1030227
Anyway, I thought I should mention that.
Thanks.
Greetings guys.... i have the 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch. I first backed it up; the back size was 1962934272 with and without the bs=1M parameters and is identical. Tried the TouchNooter 1.6.24 ... didn't work ... stuck at the 'Nook by Barnes and noble' screen.... reverted back from the backup. Tried again per "nookdevs.com/NookTouch_Rooting". Put the rooted uRamdisk in. Installed adb on ubuntu and installed on the rooted nook su, superuser.apk, nook color tools, gapps using adb with some help googling around. Rebooted ... this is when the system got updated to 1.0.1.
Well... now when i reboot i am still at the regular B&N screen. What am i missing? I think i need the 'Go Launcher'. To have the same apps as the TouchNooter, i was thinking of installing busybox and buttonSavior from market afterwards. I need to find how to install go launcher .... search didn't yield good results... can somebody give me a link please...
Will the following files from TouchNooter along with the go launcher make it work and at par with TouchNooter?
/system/build.prop, packages.xml, framework.jar.
thank you,
Prasad
I also have a 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch and there is no problem.
TouchNooter works flawlessly (I just had to install it twice because the first time it got stuck).
By the way, if you want to install GoLauncher, you just have to download the apk here
for instance (or take the apk provided with TouchNooter) and then install it using adb install <name_of_the_apk>.apk
Agree... will try again.
I was thinking along the lines... I will try again. Thanks for replying mdall... wasn't sure if it a retry will work or not... your reply instills confidence in me to retry. Thanks again.
Worked.
Had to reboot after it stuck at the 'Nook by Barnes and noble' screen the first time... worked fine the second time.
thank you.
You're welcome

Wait, there are 2 kinds of nook? how do i know if my nook is 1962934272 bytes eMMC Nook touch or the other kind? what's the difference?
the other/prior one had 1958739968 bytes eMMC.
when you do a
dd if=/dev/sdb of=./nookTouchOriginal.img bs=1M
you will get a 1958739968 bytes file in slightly older N2E nook touch
but mine purchased on 20 Aug was 1962934272 bytes.
Hello, I am sorry that I write here but no 10 posts to write in development section.
I see threats in the forum bought nook from asda. Yesterday tried to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip. I prepared the sd card. Put in the nook and restart. It started and I waited the screen to become black, remove the card and restart.... Then it freeze on "Your NOOK is starting up..." I waited about 20 min, but nothing happend. Then I installed firm 1.2.1 UK from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41296148&postcount=2 and then again try to install touchnooter-2-1-31.zip and the result was the same froze. Then made a factory reset via NookManager and again try touchnooter 2 1 31. After that I tried older version of touchnooter-2-1-26 but absolutely the same.
All i need is to run some app that support PDF.I have scanned textbooks scanned as puctures. I want to read them in landscape and I need to zoom in may be with 2 fingers (multitouch)
PS I restore default settings and root it with Nook Manager. Then install Alkido and it support lanscape reading, but no zoom. I tried to install different kernels with no success.
Sorry for may English. I hope you understand me
Thank you

I'm sorry I don't have any help for you, but my Nook is freezing up in the same way because of the same thing. I tried to install TouchNooter while my Nook was on 1.2.1 and it is still frozen on the "Your NOOK is starting up..." (it's been hours). How did you factory reset using NookManager?
Your help would be greatly appreciated
Thank you
I found the problem.
1) If you have 1.2.1 use => Nook Manager
2) If you have 1.1.0 use => touchnooter-2-1-31.zip
I downgrade firm to 1.1.0 and use touchnooter, then flash new kernel for multitouch and fastmode. Now everything is OK

Ok, how did you use NookManager? Did you just "burn" the .img file onto the SD card and reboot the NOOK? I've done that and it doesn't recognize the NookManager SD card and just freezes on Your NOOK is starting up...
Use this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=2084266&stc=1&d=1372709166 choose the *.img file and click write. Use CARD READER not NOOK!

Ok, yes that is how I put the .img file onto the SD card (through the card reader). Now I put the card in, and shut down the nook and restart it, and it will boot into the Nook Manager?
Thanks again
EDIT: I've fixed my problem. Again, thanks for your helpful replies.
Hi,
I have a problem with my Nook Simple Touch. It's updated to 1.2 and rooted with NookManager-0.5.0.zip since July.
I turned it off this afternoon, took out the SD card, put it in a card reader and synced it with a directory in my computer. I then ejected the card and put it back in the Nook, waited about half an hour, then I turned it on. The Home screen was displayed and my apps ran normally. But when I tried to go to the library, it kept switching between the library and another screen (black, with just the Menu bar).
I thought maybe there is another update that installed silently, and I found 1.2.1 on the web (in the Nook, the software version is unavailable). I was surprised to see that it has the same name as the July 1.2 update : nook_1_2_update.zip . I downloaded it anyway (http://www.nook.com/gb/support/nook-simple-touch-software-updates#version), and I noticed that it's not the same size as the July update (July: 121,323,347 bytes, the new one: 122,621,182 bytes).
So here is my question: Is it possible to repair the Nook without updating it or rooting it again ? If not, what should I do ?
Thanks

For your Nook to work correctly with NookManager, it does need to be updated to 1.2.1, the most recent B&N software version. However, it will require an unroot and factory reset for you to be able to update to 1.2.1 without issues popping up.
My recommended procedure:
1. Boot into NookManager.
2. Do this: [No, continue without wireless > Rescue > Restore factory.zip]
3. Let it finish, take out the sdcard and sign in (or bypass) to Barnes and Noble.
4. Update your Nook to 1.2.1 using the update from this page.
5. Boot back into NookManager, and re-root.
6. Good to go!
Sorry about the hassle of having to unroot and wipe.
Hi,
Thank you for your reply. I followed your instructions and almost everything is finally back in order. But I had to improvise: I worked on it during the whole afternoon, although I had a NookManager backup. The one thing that is still wrong is that there is a bad disk in the Nook (NOT the sdcard), 1.87 GB in size, and MiniTool Partition Wizard can't do anything about it (all options are greyed out). It doesn't seem to have any consequences. I hope it stays that way.
Thanks again.

You should be fine, I believe. Unless those options that you say are grayed out were available before, I think it's supposed to be that way.
Oh, and about using the Thanks Meter - to give someone a "thank" which goes onto their meter, you click the button that says "Thanks!" in the bottom-right corner of the respective post, like I just did to you.
