Sim-locked phones bootloader progress? - Xperia Play General

So I would like to know if any progress has been made to unlock bootloaders on simlocked phones? Have donations covered the costs of handsets or do we still need more donations?
Any news?

I'm not sure but I believe donations were not meant for bootloader unlocking off sim-locked devices. And that the freeXperia team is not doing research into unlocking these bootloaders out of fear that Sonyericsson will start locking all bootloaders in the future. Now people have a choice between locked and unlocked bootloaders when they buy a xperia play.
I believe I read the above somewhere but I'm not sure.

Well that's weak I guess its time to sell this piece of crap then my bloody X10 is able to do more than this phone, if I can't unlock the bootloader in the future to flash custom roms then I'm basically wasting my time with this phone and its going up for sale tomorrow

Be more cautious with your next five-hundred-dollar purchase. Buy carrier-free, open-bootloader phones, otherwise, as you see, they won't be yours.

Oh well I'm not to worried about it I'll just check out something else for now and I hope they make a xplay 2 cause I would definitely buy it its a fun phone I just hoped that they would be able to figure it out but it sound like the devs aren't gonna bother so no biggie I'm able to move on

Well in canada thats really hard to come by. There's no way to get an unlockable xperia play for us.

It's strange that the HTC EVO 3D that will be launching on Rogers will have an unlocked bootloader while this phone won't.

Wouldn't an imported sim-lock free device work on the rogers network?

Yes that would work but I bought mine the day it came out for $550 and wasn't interested in spending 800-900 bucks to get an unlocked version its not even close to being worth that its not even worth the 550 Rogers started it off with

[Q] When will the Bootloader be cracked?

Is there anyone working on hacking the bootloader for us users that have sim-locked devices? I mean it would be a shame if only the sim unlocked devices got custom roms.
So if I sim unlock my phone the bootloader can be unlocked?
Sent from my R800a using XDA Premium App
Simply said: no.
For the current method of unlocking SE will look at an internal database to see if your phone is allowed to be unlocked after wich you'll get a special unlock code.
Can't some developers see how this process works and try to replicate it to sim-locked devices?
Is the bootloader just locked? or signed as well?
They would probably need to discover a whole new way to unlock the bootloader as there is both no unlockcode avaible and the locked bootloaders can't connect to the software that unlocks them.
As there would be less drive to unlock the locked bootloaders then with devices that are always bootlocked and the fact that the x10 took very long to hack I wouldn't expect it anytime soon.
Then again, I'm not one of those devs who seem to be able to do things that look like magic to me.
I got my Play a few weeks back, its sim locked to T Mobile UK. I cant get the phone to connect to fastboot (because its sim locked I know that) but the SE bootloader site gave me a unlock code. Do u think its at all possible for this phone to be sim unlocked somehow? My guess is no but its worth asking.

Can't they see how the x10 bootloader got hacked and then try it for the x10?

That is quite strange. Are you sure they sent you a code? I have never tried the website but it does seem strange.
i receive mine in a couple days. ill let u guys know. i bought mine from someone that got it free from google io. he says its unbranded and factory unlocked already.
@RacecarBMW yeah I have the bootloader unlock code saved on my laptop just incase I need it for any reason. The box is a GSM box with no T Mobile markings on it, but the phone is sim locked. When I hold down search and connect to USB the phone just charges, I tried both cables that cane with the play and a couple I already have but it always had the same outcome.

Is there maybe something in the build.prop that could be changed to enable fastboot? Or is that something that isn't included with sim locked phones?

charlieb620 seems to be the only dev in here but he already has an unlocked phone. We need to wait and get someone in here who can answer all these questions. Right now theirs nothing but questions. Once the US gets the play the demand for a unlocked bootloader will be huge and we will start seeing more devs jump on this.

Unlock code but no fastboot mode

Got rogers 2.3.2 and have a bootloader unlock code. Tried to get into fastboot and after much reading I think my phone might not even have a fastboot mode. My question is if anyone here thinks unlocking bootloader while being locked out of fastboot will ever be possible?
Am I stuck with what se and rogers gave me or will I ever taste custom rom goodness?
The FreeXperia team said they'll do nothing on phones with locked bootloaders, since they say that you can buy a carrier-free phone and unlock them yourself. So to say, they want to play by SE's rules.
R800x phones are a different league altogether, as you can't buy them SIM-free and SE has offered no BL unlock path at all for those phones.
I dont understand se rules. Why give me the unlock code but no path to unlock? Sure they gave me the keys to a nice car but putting fuel in it isnt possible? How does that make any sense?
They will give you the unlock path after your contract has expired. That's the logic. If you want to get the fully featured phone, buy it free from Sony directly.
and thats where my problem is, I bought the phone the day it came out straight from a rogers store at full price and not on any contract. unlocked carrier and put in my bell sim card and away I went.
sometimes it doesn't pay to be an early adopter
I bought it full-price as well... but carrier-free. People should do that more often, because carrier subsidies mean that you don't own your phone.

The issue is that, once the BL is unlocked, it removes all security from the phone including sim lock's ect. thats why only sim free phones are allowed to unlock

Yes but where can I get one? The sony stores here only provide sim locked ones. Even at full price. I checked online but their all rogers version unlocked.
I'm pretty sure that Rogers is the ONLY carrier in Canada to have the Xperia play which sucks cause I'm starting to get the feeling that unlocked bootloader will never happen for us sim-locked phones
Sent from my R800i using XDA App
I'm so sad now, i have a rogers play as well. but it does look like they are working on unlocking the bootloader for the verizon version of the play.
Always seems i'm on the wrong side of stuff. se should give us canadians a way to buy there phones and not have to go through a carrier. we apparently live in the free world yet have no options for this. when i lived ion the philippines i go go to sm (mall) and buy any se phone at the time untouched. in fact back in 2002 i bought a se t68i there and they would update the firmware for free.
Now i'm in the free world and se wont provide me a place to buy there handset unless it's through a carrier.
boy does this make me mad.....
ok im over it.

Finally! Motorola starts unlocking bootloader!

Motorola says they will make the bootloader of the razr unlockable! (The android phone, not the other one) Check out the link here.
For those of you who are too lazy to read the whole thing, I summarised the whole article.
1. Razr first phone to include the fully implemented lock/unlock bootloader software in it.
2.Once Motorola launched the razr in their global markets, they will have a list of the models that will be unlocked displayed on their motodev.com website.
3.Mobile operators/carriers can opt out to having this software on their phone
4.Verizon has opt out. (Doesn't affect me personally but still unhappy)
So now, pressure your carriers!!
Also, hopefully, moto will also unlock their other phones. (Not that we need it now)
That's the thing, carriers still want the BLs locked down.
Why is there such a struggle with Motorola, but not Samsung with this?...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Is there a possibility that samsung has it easier because they pressure carriers themselves? Perhaps by having a variant of the Galaxy S2 on each carrier they can use that to their advantage. They just say "if you don't allow us to have an unlocked bootloader on your network then people will go to someone that will."
With phones like the Razr they can't cause it exclusive. I'm probably way off but it's just a thought.
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
I hope they unlock all of their phones as I just bought myself an atrix 2 and can't wait to start flashing.
Guess for now I'll have to stick with playing with the old atrix.
The a2 is great but what phone couldn't be better.

Hmmm. Good point there. Also, the Droid name is owned by Verizon and not Motorola so thee do have quite little say in the matter. Hopefully the software from the global razr can be ported to the Verizon one.

They did say they will start unlocking bootloaders late 2011, and seem to be keeping with the plan. They also say the razr will be the first phone to be unlocked, followed by other devices. So maybe early next year your wish will come true!
As was already said, the key here is that the carriers will have the option to opt out. Motorola could have given us an unlocked bootloader anytime they wanted on the Atrix, but were/are held back by carriers and their contracts. So in reality, not a damned thing is changing unless you choose to purchase a full price non-carrier specific phone in the future which will have this option.
I view this as purely marketing on Motorola's part, as they are offering up nothing that they haven't had the ability to provide at any other time previous to this announcement.
it should be policy to unlock bootloaders once they decide not to bring future updates. what do you guys think?
in my country they just passed a law where it is forbidden to lock phones to carriers; if you have a locked phone, you can just bring it to the carrier you want to use and they have to unlock it for free.
imagine if motorla announced no ICS for atrix, then i could just bring it to an at&t tech service and demand they unlock BL for free and without worrying about bricking my phone.

You're thinking of SIM Lock and not bootloader unlock. They are 2 completely separate things.
i know the difference
what i was trying to say is that it would be cool if there was a law such the one i described, that applied to locked bootloaders.
Base Blue Chronic 4
I just installed the Home Base Blue Chronic 4 and I have to say its fantastic...
I noticed that there is an update to 6.2 but it says its tailored for version 5??
Am I safe in installing it? I did not see a blue chronic version 5 to download...
Thank you
I wish they would just unlock everything and not give the carriers the option. One can dream...

IS AT&T SGSIII carrier-locked when paying for the full price?

I'm attempting to buy the AT&T SGSIII with the full price since it's probably the cheapest you can get among all the options.
As I am going to use it on Rogers network in Canada, I would like to know if it's carrier-locked even i pay for the full price???
I know Android phones are pretty easy to get unlocked. I just don't want the hassle.
I plan on driving down to the Seattle this upcoming weekend and nail one!!! Cannot wait anymore!
Even if you get it without commitment, the device will still be locked. AT&T won't unlock it for about six months (I don't know the exact length). Why not just try cellunlocker.net? It unlocked my phone in thirty mins. It's just 25$ so give it a try

Wow..... 6 months.... So, if i get it unlocked through cellunlocker.net, and I flash back to the factory setting and have AT&T unlocked it for me 6 months later?? Will they still honor the warranty??
Sorry for my noob question. Coming from iPhone and not quite familiar with American carrier.
AT&T says they have a 6 month period when they have exclusivity on the phones, but they obviously don't have exclusive rights in the US. Also, they've been unlocking iPhones that were purchased outright, so you can use that to your advantage.

Once you do a sim unlock, it's unlocked forever. No need to get a code from AT&T when it's available.
AT&T is interested in selling phones for it's network, not selling to people looking to sell or take them somewhere else.

I was into the Bell store on Monday (May 12th) and I asked if it were possible to unlock the bootloader. The rep didn't know offhand. But he pulled a phone from the inventory, booted it up for me then let me enter the code to enter the service menu *#*#7378423#*#* and check.
Apparently the version they sell in the Bell store (at least in Nova Scotia, can't speak for the rest of Canada) does not allow you to unlock the bootloader (it says bootloader unlock allowed: No). So if you're looking to buy the Xperia Z2 from Bell and you live in Nova Scotia... Be aware of this.
(I haven't heard any other sources in Canada confirm or deny that it was possible to unlock the bootloader though.)
I'm not sure if the Sony store has their version yet for sale or whether or not it'll be possible to unlock either. (The Sony store website says that the phone is only taking pre-orders right now and that it's estimated to ship next month.)
I've bought today from Bell in Winnipeg, Manitoba, with 2-year contract and yes,the bootloader is locked too. But besides of that, great device!

I guess I'm going to have to return this; and grab it from Sony Store instead.

I REALLY like the phone, even without root. I think Sony did a lot of things right. Nothing was offensive, that I wanted to change it with Xposed modules. Still though, knowing that Sony's version has unlockable BL; I'll just pay outright. That's how willing I am to use this as a daily driver.
I got this phone 2 weeks ago and i love it! The only things are yes the BL is locked by Hell and the sound from the headphones and speakers are pretty low. There is a MOD to boost the volume like on the z1 but, it's only available on ROOT. Hopefully, the DEV's can find an exploit and be able to have ROOT on a locked BL like on the z1. Also, BTW Hell went cheap with the accessories, with some ****ty ear buds, not even in ear, and a usb cable and charger. Good thing i kept my magnetic charger cable from my Z1
Can anyone confirm that the unlocked version from the sony store has an unlockable bootloader?
