What happens when you select recovery from boot loader? Does phone boot as normal instead? And can you use ROM manager to re download the recovery for your phone? Oh and you can use fastboot to flash a new recovery, the command is:You have to put the image in the tools directory of the android SDK if you have it on your pc, which i thinl you should get
fastboot flash xxx.img

my phone boots up normally when i select recovery from the boot loader, i've been re-downloadind the recovery from rom manager, but nothing happens that way, i have sdk installed already i will try your suggestion, and to flash an img file do i have to be in fastboot mode and type in the command???

What is up with people posting questions in the Development section? Did you not see the Question and Answer section?
EDIT: fixed

[Q] fastboot - no boot or img file

hey guys i'm having some trouble. i just got the nexus (it's my first smartphone, ever) and i've tried to hit the ground running. here's what i've done to the phone so far.
i got all the drivers running on my win7 machine and also installed the android SDK folder onto C: as was described in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=878786
i then unlocked the bootloader using the above guide as well. when I power on the phone using UP+POWER it says UNLOCKED.
I then proceeded to follow this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875875
i used ADB to flash the clockwork crespo recovery. i then used fastboot to install Superuser.
at that point i had an unlocked bootloader, clockword recovery image and superuser permissions.
i then saw that the 2.3.1 update had been released. i wanted to learn how to tackle that so i started reading up. i noticed that people were using ROM Manager and Titanium. I got titanium and installed the BusyBox addon and it allowed me to do a full Batch Backup of all my programs, etc. i've got the 50MB or so backup folder on my PC now.
anyway, i then messed with Rom Manager. I installed the 3.0.0.0 ClockworkMod Recovery and everything went smoothly. now this is where my troubles begin.
when i go to Download ROM all i get is a Free Stuff area.
when i go to Check for ROM Updates it tells me my device isnt set up for OTA updates.
those are just minor issues.
this is the big and scary issue i have:
when i click on reboot to recovery, it takes me to the same screen that i go to when i power on with VOLUME UP+POWER. it doesnt take me to the recovery screen that i see in various youtube videos. instead, i'm at the main screen where it says UNLOCKED and i have 4 choices (reboot bootloader, recovery, reboot, power off). and on the very top in RED letters it says fastboot - no boot or img file. <-- this is the part that makes me nervous. If i manually power down the phone and boot to fastboot and click recovery, it just goes back to this same screen and says fastboot - no boot or img file. when i first rooted the phone, clicking recovery actually took me to a different screen where i was able to load up superuser.zip and install it.
did i accidetnally delete something that i wasnt supposed to? did installing ROM manager mess something up? i typically dont do anything until i confirm that i am supposed to. i think the problem is that i dont yet know how one thing i do on the phone affects another. i'm guessing when i used rom manager to update the CWmod it changed some folders/files? i dunno!
otherwise, the phone works fine and there are no glitches or hiccups or crashes. So if someone can please take a moment to just explain to me what i did wrong or what i failed to do i'd really, really appreciate it.
you don't have a recovery partition. Either flash one over manually using fastboot, or boot up and try to use ROM Manager to flash CWR.
when you say flash one over using fastboot, do you mean put my phone using VOLUME UP + POWER, connect usb cable, then use command line to do this:
fastboot flash recovery recovery-clockwork-crespo.img
?

Yes, 'cept it will be "fastboot flash recoveryrecovery-clockwork-3.0.0.0-crespo.img" without the quotes now.
But does it say that you're missing a boot.img or recovery.img?
Also, the "not set up for OTA" thing isn't for official OTAs. Some developers have made their custom ROMs capable of being updated that way.

thank you luxferro and unremarked. i did it and it works perfectly. i am now able to access clockworkmod recovery 3.0.0.0. next step is backup my existing ROM and also to figure out how to put the OTA 2.3.1 on and restore all my data
oh and unremarked: it basically said no boot or img file and thats it after i would click on recovery or reboot to recovery trhough rom manager. it was just in red at the top. but now it takes me to the ClockworkMod Recovery

[Q] DEAD N4? Not Really but failed to root and install recovery

I tried to root my phone today by using the Nexus 4 toolkit. In the process of rooting the phone, the use connection is physically disconnect by myself well it was an accident. After that, I only got unlocked bootloader, but I am not be able to get the recovery and the SU in the phone. When I try to repeat the steps, it is stucking at " cannot connect device" or sometimes "failed ... unknown error" or even "protocol error"(if I remember correctly. It seems that the connection is gone between the phone and the desktop under the fastboot mode. But under the normal Android OS, I am able to connect my phone to desktop to do the data transfer things.
I am seeking for help here. I hope I explain my problem properly that you guys can understand. Here is error I got sometime when I connect my phone to PC.
The button is OK in the pic.

Accidently hit the thanks button
The phone`s bootloader is allready unlocked.
- Is the phone recognized in adb and fastboot mode? If not install the 0.72 usb naked drivers.
- Flash CWM recovery in fastboot mode from here http://clockworkmod.com/rommanager, choose touche or non touch.
- flash superSU 1.20 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053 in CWM recovery.
- Install BusyBox from Google Play.
- Done.

Install the android sdk platform-tools and once installed:
- open cmd terminal and type: adb reboot bootloader
- type: fastboot devices and you should see a serial number if the usb drivers are nstalled correctly
- then type: fastboot flash recovery recovery-(name of the recovery).img
Read some threads to get familiar with your phone and to learn how to flash, root, use adb and it`s commands etc etc.

Yes it works, but it will not flash the SU zip. You need a custom recovery for that.

adb doesn´t see N4 in recovery

Hi, these days I adb sideloaded android 4.3 on my Nexus 4. adb worked like a charm at this time. Now I wanted to root my phone (til now the phone was on stock recovery), but since 4.3 the device is not recognized by adb anymore when in stock recovery mode. So something changed during the update and i can´t communicate with my device anymore in recovery. I know that there is a similar thread on this topic, but my computer runs Archlinux 64-bit, therefore I started this new topic.
I would be happy if you could help me rooting my device.
You need to flash a new recovery in fastboot mode first, then flash the SU package

Thank you for your answer. The problem is that the bootloader is still locked, so I wanted to open it with adb first.
If you unlock it and flash a custom recovery straight away before rebooting you shouldn't lose any data
But thats the problem, I can´t open the bootloader because adb doesn´t recognize my device when it is in recovery mode, but only when booting it up normally. So I can´t open the bootloader and flash a custom recovery.
EDIT: I was able to open the bootloader with fastboot instead of adb. Everthing went fine and I`m rooted now. Thank you for your help.

That's what I said in the first place, you can only unlock using fastboot
I've found a driver that works fine for me on another XDA thread...
download.clockworkmod.com/test/UniversalAdbDriverSetup6 .msi
I'm on win8 and i was having the same trouble with ADB in recovery, after installing these, no problem!
Thank you for your answer. I´m sorry for the misunderstanding, but everything works like a charm now.

[Q] Rom missing

So while i was rooting some stuff went wrong and now i have clockwork mod recovery on my nexus 4 and an unlocked boot loader but no ROM it appears like. If anyone can help me out it would be greatly appreciated. I cannot access it on ADB (it doesn't appear as a device) and I can't access the files through windows. Also I was able to reboot the device into the bootloader using the fastboot command, I'm thinking I may be able to flash the stock rom with the fastboot command.

Did you try "adb push"?
Anyhow, download the stock image and flash it through fastboot.

LG Stylo 2 unable to be recognized in recovery

New to XDA so sorry if i posted this in the wrong place
But recently i received a new phone, an LG Stylo 2 Boost Mobile. It recognized fine while it was on through adb, but when i turned it off and booted into recovery, it wouldn't be recognized by adb, nor fastboot, and when i tried to "reboot into bootloader" it only restarted the whole phone into its normal boot. Adb sideload worked but i had no idea what files to try due to a locked bootloader and no stock ROMs found anywhere. I tried kingroot and it didn't have any ways to get an instant root. Im running Ubuntu and the phone is on 6.0.1 Marshmallow. Any ideas out there? I'd be sure to give them a try
The phone would only be accessible in recovery via the adb sideload option with stock recovery.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

I'm trying to unlock the bootloader so i can flash a new recovery then root won't be hard to achieve, but when i try to access the phone in recovery mode, it doesn't recognize whatsoever. I thought there would be something i could do with sideload to somewhat downgrade the system and gain some type of bootloader, but that didn't work. Is there someway i can flash a custom recovery?
Don't believe there are any options for unlocking the bootloader or a custom recovery for that phone. According to what I could find in a quick search, there is root available but only on the software update ending in ZV3.

Alright, thanks for the info, wasn't sure if there was a way around it or not
