I rooted my EVO, but now I want to sownload a custom rom with sense 3.0
What are the steps? I looked at video's online but got confused because no one shows where they get the files and where the hell they hide them in the phone. I am a noob to this, but I want to learn all the ins and outs of the phone. I had an EVO 3D and I like the original EVO better, but I do like a couple features of the 3.0 sense.

Each thread in the evo development section of the XDA forums that starts with "[ROM]" is a thread all about a particular ROM. Somewhere in the first post will be a link to the ROM file. The file should be placed in the root directory of your phone (so, not in any folders). Then you're going to have to look for a tutorial, because I'm not going to type it all up here.
Alternately, you could search for and download ROM Manager from the market. There are a decent selection of ROMs that it will download and apply for you with the click of a button. That's how I flashed my first ROM. I do it the old fashioned way now, but it's a good place to start.
There are MANY MANY guides on how to do this, and I highly recommend you spend some time reading before you attempt anything.
But I'll give you the short directions:
Place rom zip on sd card, boot into recovery, make nandroid backup, wipe cache, dalvik cache, and data. Then install (flash) rom zip.
Don't use ROM Manager. Flash AmonRa 2.3 in PC36IMG form (check my sig). Details are in the original post.
Download the ROM. wipe data, dalvk, cache, system, boot and sdext. Back up all items on SD card to computer, partition the card. I do 1 gig swap, 2 gig ext. Look in development for a partitioning guide. Restore items to SD card from computer, have ROM on the card. Navigate to it using volume keys, flash it.

I just recently got the MyTouch4G, got it permrooted and did a full back up of my sd card to my pc, but it's still on stock rom. I want to flash cyanogen7 but there's a lot of junk on the sd card first
My question is if it is okay to do a full format and if so, any advice on important folders or files I should copy back after the format, apart from the clockwork folder (i know that one is important)

Well do as I do just create a dir called Files and inside it make sub dir's and put all stuff you want in it like aduio, video, photo, ect. Also dont worry about the other folders in your root /sdcard. Far as format goes as you backed it up to your PC just format sdcard and if you missed something it will rebuild itself. Make sure you backed up video/photo whatever if you took any. Usually once you install something that requires you to place elements in the root of your sdcard after its complete always remove it this way you save yourself a lot of headaches later on. I always keep my dir nice and clean old habit of *nix world

Thanks for your response. Just curious but clockwork recovery on Vibrant saves itself as update.zip (if I remember correctly) on the root of the internal sd card. Where does it save recovery on MT4G? I didn't see an update.zip file after flashing recovery. Thanks again for your response

Its saved under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup you will see the dir with timestamp. Normally I don't waste time backing up as I know what I am doing but if you do want it then go ahead and just mv the dir to your PC temporarily then sync back to sdcard once you are done.
Whatever data is saved even the cache on SD I know so if I find data that is valuable I still mv it to /sdcard/files and redirect that path. This way I have clean data scheme as you don't want 9000 bs on your root directory.

When you do this with MT4G, it puts that recovery flash somewhere.

I think CM comes with clockwork rom manager preinstalled. Your recovery won't change when you flash a rom. There's no need to back up recoveries because they're available in rom manager. If you need cw 3.0.0.5 just download the flashable version from the cm7 forum and save it.

Since the mytouch 4g installs some of the apps on the microSD card, does a nandroid backup include those in the system image? Or should I use something like titanium backup for those?

Nandroid will back everything in the system including apps but some data is stored on the sd card as well. My advice is to a nandroid and backup your entire sd card to your pc as well

This is not really in reference to cyanogenmod but any rooted MT4G. When you root your phone you download and install clockwork. From rom manager, you choose ' flash recovery'. You choose your phone from the list and it flashes the recovery image somewhere on your phone. My question was to find out what directory does it flash recovery to and as what the file is called.
I am currently running gorillasens final but this would be the same as any rom here, possibly the exception being cyanogenmod

The newer ones with 1.2 seem to be shipping with a different partitioning. My understanding is it only affects things if you want to install on the EMMC. If you install and boot on a SDCard, you can install anything you want.
It does not matter much since you can repartition any nook color as it seems (I did aswell...)
You just need to flash those to files in Clockwork Mod recovery and your partitions allow the installation of any system to emmc:
1. flash "repartition-1GBdata.zip"
2. reboot (so the partition table is loaded)
3. flash "reformat-Data.zip"

Since some days and i 'm downloading ROMS EU or others.
I become very confused as i'm looking for ROM that can flashed easy way as attached here that 1st snap-shot shows that after extracting ROM downloaded that there is no file DFA.EXE to run but instead of that all there are folders.
although installation instructions said that run DFA.EXE.
I did not see that file except in one and old version.
I need to have newest version.
Here i flashed my HD2 within 10 minutes and it was very good exp to this transform to android and no more windows!!!!

I downloaded 3 ROMS but all of them are folders with no DFA.EXE is there some ways that to know if ROM file has a DFA.EXE file instead of downloading and waste my time as my connection is little bit slow!!!!.

The rom you opened in second Screenshot doesn't use dark forces flasher.
You will have to flash a recovery (clockwork mod). And flash the rom via clockwork mod.
It makes flashing much easier and you can make backups etc.
For tutorial see the android nand section -> roll up sticky.
Look out for how to flash your first rom and clockwork mod.

Did you miss the bit where he says he wants one that doesn't rely on SD card?
@OP No there are very few roms that use daf.exe, nearly all use cwm and SD card.
You could learn how to load a cwm rom into the android sdk on the PC, then dump the system and boot folder to images and replace the system and boot images in the old daf rom folder, remembering to adjust flash.cfg partition size for the new system size.

dudes i am planning to switch to #199 cm7.
the plans are...
1) fresh flash #199 with 2.6.32 buzz kernal.
2) dta2sd beta 3,jewz ram script, sd speed increase script(4068) .
3) custom mtd partition with 170mb system and 30 mb cache.
4) data and app to sd ext4.
5) 8gb class 4 sd partitioned to 1gb ext4, 32mb swap, rest with fat32 with a large allocation value.
6) lot of paid app of course.
i need your suggestions ....

Do the mtd partition as you install 199, I got problems when a2sd was already installed, my mtd settings are 140 10, 10mb works fine for cache just make sure you have 06mountdl in your init.d folder otherwise you wont be able to download anything from the market above 10mb in size, if it isn't in the init.d folder you should find it in the cm zip.

dude i haven't heared of init.d folder. pls explain. well i surely plan to give 25 mb cache. if so do i need to care about init.d folder?

so i am a newbee to custom mtd partition. hence i need help about this. how should i need to use the script? i plan to flash it soon after i reboot to #199. only after that i will install my apps.and also gapps. so do i need to take nandroid backup? as i have backups of my app using titanium backup. so i will install every thing later.

Put the files needed on your sd card and write your settings in the txt file.
Run the first part of the mtd partition (wipe system/data/cache and install the first zip, bravo recovery or something like that, reboot your recovery from the advanced setting.
After doing the first step install your fresh copy of cm7 (instead of the nandroid backup) without wiping anything, then run the bravo boot zip and let it boot before installing anything else.
Files from the market, when first downloaded go to your /cache folder which if set to only 10mb would mean you can only download files below 10mb in size, the 06mountdl script deals with this by diverting the downloads elsewhere /data partition I think (not sure), the scripts are found in /system/etc/init.d after installing cyanogen if your cache size is small just check that folder (with root explorer) as a few times I have had to extract 06mountdl from the cm7 zip because it hasn't installed.
All that happens if 06mountdl isn't there is, when you go to the market you'll get an annoying message saying you don't have space left if the filesize of the app is larger than your cache.

Not entirely sure, I know some people say before but its never harmed me doing it after, you may aswell just run it straightaway though after your first reboot. Just in case.
I only use beta 3 as I had problems with beta 4, I don't think there's any noticeable changes between them tbh.

So i ended up in cm7#203. Stable. Fast, like it a lot.
The sad thing is i can't make custom mtd. Every time i ended in a non booting cm7 boot screen. Actually i had to flash froyo 2.2.1 ruu 2 times. Rooted, installed cwm. 2 times. Coz i had done like u said. Flashed custom mtd recovery with mtdpartmap.txt file containing 160 25. Then installed new rom with a reboot of recovery only.also flashed bravo boot. All as you said. Stuck in splash screen. So again tried to flash new rom and kernel from recovery. Still the same after flashing. So again ruu flash. Install custom cwm v5.xxx.partitioned SD. This time the SD got corrupted. So removed custom cwm and put original cwm using fastboot flash. Then partitioned with out errors. And installed cm7#203 from cwm, SD speed increase script,Jews ram script,2.6.35 kernal, latest radio, mediaprofile patch, gapps for 2.3.5 Andy. Rebooted after dalvic wipe. Itz running perfect. Installed s2e app . Moved app,private app, data, to ext.
I think that s2e is more efficient than dta2sd. It is faster, move almost every thing to ext. And internal memory consumption is quite low after app installations(when compared to dta2sd). Also booting and shut down are faster.

I've owned my OG EVO since launch day, and have been rooted/flashing various ROMs ever since.
I've always had the app "App2SD" loaded, to make moving apps to external storage easier.
Looking at flashing other ROMs recently, I noticed some talk about supporting A2SD naively, and scripts and such. What is the difference between using the app or this naive solution?

The app ur referring to only moves the data for apps to the SD card, if u use dark tremors a2sd it moves the entire app and all its data. U must have a partitioned SD card to use it though.

Hmmm... So DarkTremors A2SD is something that is built into the ROM? I guess I'm wondering how one would utilize that built-in capability after the ROM is loaded...
I didn't realize the Apps2SD only moved the data. It seemed to move the app too by looking at free space and how it was affected by using it...
if i understand it right... its not "included" in the rom. You need to download and flash the script, but the rom and kernel of most roms support it. It is well worth it. I did this not long after rooting. I partitioned my 32GB sdcard and flashed DT a2sd.

So I've made it through a couple of pages on the linked thread, and the answer may be there (but I haven't gotten to it yet)... How does partitioning the SD card affect Nandroid backups/restore or Titanium Backup, if at all? I know that Nandroid has an "SD-ext" option... I assume this is for backup/restore of the EXT formatted portion of the card? Are Nandroid backups stored on the FAT formatted partitions still?

Yes, but unless your ROM supports Dark Tremors A2SD, the system won't be able to utilize the EXT formatted space on the card, from what I am gathering...

Nandroid and tb remain on the storage partition, the FATS32 or whichever one your recovery uses. The ext- partition holds just the apps and data. Wont affect your backups in any way to my knowledge. Remember to back up all your data you want to keep to your pc or something before partitioning as it formats your sd card first.

Ive been using DT Apps2sd for a while now. I have the stock 8gb card that came with my evo and its partitioned for apps2sd. From what Ive always understood, what apps2sd does is it moves all your apps and the data for those apps to the ext partition of your sd card and it symlinks the apps to the phone so the phone actually thinks the apps are running from the internal memory even though it isn't. The advantage of the symlink is that it doesn't affect the apps' performance and widgets and such. The apps2sd app you speak of only moves the data to the sd card which can sometimes cause issues with apps' performance and widgets not working correctly. So, I recommend using DT apps2sd if you want more internal space without sacrificing performance.

With DT, it looks like you flash it, but after that I'm lost... Does it automatically install all apps to the SD anytime I initiate an installer action? Or do I need to do something to have the system install to the SD?

here is some more info from what i understand. flash your rom, flash dt a2sd and reboot. once its all set, it automatically installs apps you download to the ext partition. also... if you decide to change roms, it is recommended to wipe the ext partition, but i never do and have had no issues. The only thing i have to do is once the new rom and a2sd are flashed and i reboot i have to install the terminal app and open it up any type the following commands...
su [ENTER]
a2sd reinstall [ENTER]
this reinstally the links to the apps... you can also move dalvik cache to the sd to free up more space.
a2sd cachesd [ENTER]
another helpful tool to make sure cache and apps are on the ext partition is apps2sd gui
you can get it from the market and it is just a graphical interface

After you flash DT, you would want to download terminal emulator from the play store and type the following commands:
Type "su" then enter
Then type "a2sd reinstall" (without the "" of course lol) then enter
After you do that, let the phone do its thing and it will reboot. After the reboot, you are good. All your apps should be moved to the ext partition on your sd card. If you want, you can also move your dalvik-cache to the ext partition by typing the following commands:
"su", enter
"a2sd cachesd", enter
Just like before, your phone will do its thing in terminal emulator and then it will reboot. After that, you're good! You should notice a HUGE difference in available internal storage after this.

Now, I am putting this together, so I can get the E4G decked out (because we all know our EVOlt won't be around for a while) and am looking for sharp looking/behaving ROMs to make this old beast happy, and keep me satisfied until Customs gets off their lazy asses.
I just have to find a ROM that is nice enough now

There are plenty of good sense roms out there, but you really should try this one... Energy sense 3.5 rom march 15.... i used it before i switched to CIUI(base of CM7 with MIUI look/feel). Energy rom is very stable and fast, but also heavy and a2sd is a must to free up some space.
Do you know of any kernels that work with it? It uses the stock kernel, which, from what I've read, doesn't support DT A2SD...
