Motorola Entertainment center supported formats? - Atrix 4G General

I've tried searching but all the threads I've come across don't really answer my question, so I'll just ask it here
What video formats are supported on the Entertainment center? (Not webtop, but the interface you get when you only use an HDMI cable)
I'm looking to upload some movies onto my phone so I can have them anywhere I go, so what would be the best format for this?

Is there an official document about supported formats ?

Note link to Android core media formats on MotoDev page:

While i can play *.avi video formats in phone, i can't even see them in entertainment center. Is there a known fix for this ?

Youtube app on X10

Just out of curiosity, since the X10 doesn't support flash (hopefully, that will change someday), then how is it possible to watch videos on youtube with the youtube app?
Does it stream the content using h.264 or something similar? Is the youtube app a standalone flash player?
Sorry if this has been answered before, but I couldn't find anythig but rants about the X10 not supporting flash when I searched the forum.

good question maybe is like in winmo
or because youtube and android are from google maybe a trick is hidden there xD idk
You could ask the same of USTREAM , BBCi PLAYER and MPLAYER (beeb player) and how does SKYFIRE stream media from sites?! as they all do the same
the mobile app essentially streams the 3gp version of videos from the mobile version

Thanks PiLoT. That explains it.

to my knowledge, it uses some mediaserver thingie, which apparently worked on my dumb T700 as well..
THAT phone certainly doesn't support flash, and when it failed to stream it says failed to connect to mediaserver..
The videos on youtube are all converted from the original format to various other formats including H.264 and that's what is streamed to modern phones.
On the flash player they're playing a .flv file, which is just a container for the H.264 video. (Also, youtube always keep the original file on their servers in case they change change something and need to reencode, eg. if they increase the max resolution or something.)
Thanks for the replies everybody. Now I know.
/and knowing is half the battle.

Adding movies to streak

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had any luck adding movies to the streak. Ive tried to put a digital copy from a dvd I bought on it and it never shows up. Can someone please help. And sorry if this is a repeat question.

I usually upload vidcast (video podcast) to the /video dir in memorycard. Works like a charm.
It is probably an codec issue...
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Use Rockplayer if your codec doesn's get recognized.
Otherwise I like Meridian player most.
Doesn't this type of movie have digital rights that only play on certain progs. I.e windows mob. Media player? I know I've had this issue with loading movies in this format to a phone before.
Is it in MP4 or avi? As the stock player wont play avi files N I would also recommend rock player.

Thanks I will give rockplayer a try.

VPLAYER seems to be the new kid on the block that plays all
DVDs on the Streak
The best solution I've found by far is SPB Mobile DVD. This software allows you to put a DVD into your computer's DVD drive, run the software, and it will convert a full length movie into an .avi file of about 500megs that plays really well with Rockplayer. Just copy it to your storage card and enjoy!
I got SPB Mobile DVD when using my former WinMo phones (came to the Streak from the Tilt2). Most of the SPB software I used on my windows phone is forgotten now with Android, but this gem really works well! Hope this helps!

OK so now I have dolphin browser on it and rockplayer and still can't get movies off of 4shared it downloads really fast and its not the hole file.... man all I want on this sick 5" screen is some really nice movies. love the phone have had it for two months this thing is just awsome...... just really would like some movies.. PS no CPU any more need to be able to do it from my streak
When you say no CPU, do you mean you don't have a computer to move stuff from?
BTW, you won't be able to play digital copies from bought movies on the Android platform. They only work through iTunes devices or Windows Media Player. Since Android has neither, you can't play the file no matter even if you get it onto your phone. DRM will stop it from playing. I would see if you could find a DRM stripper, or just download it, or use a DVDtoMP4 or something program.
ya no computer to move movies on to the streak.... oh well thanks anyway im just going to pay someone to put movies on my sd card....
I hope I don't incur the wrath of the mods here, but if you have an unlimited data plan, you could always go to one of the well known forums that i'm not allowed to mention, where you will find rapidshare/megaupload links for hundreds of movies that have been converted for watching on smartphones. Of course, before you download any, you need to check you own an original copy ;-)

I used dvdfab, amazing program, converted a movie that i used to have on my ipod, it was set to mp4, converted it to mp4 for general devices, used rockplayer, works like a charm.
I tried playing it on streak player, it works but everything seems choppy.

Get a program (of your choice) that will rip a DVD into mp4 format. Choose the resolution of Android 800x480. Easier said than done sometimes, since DVD copy protection can sometimes be a factor. WHat I find is the best way is this.
1. Get ImgBurn, and DVDFab (for the copy protection). if this is not legal here, I apologize. Img is free, dvd fab has a free version
2. create an ISO of the DVD.
3. Get Elaborate Bytes Virtual Clone drive also free.
4. Mount the ISO you just created.
5. load up your DVD to mp4 converter
6. convert to mp4 with the android settings of 800x480
7. copy the resulting mp4 file to your streak. the default video player will play the file without issue, as well as any other program (rock etc) that supports playing mp4.
the program I use at home for the conversion to mp4 supports most major devices by name (i.e. iphone) but the streak is not listed. In playing around with it, I found there is a specific setting for "Android 800x480" and it works perfectly. Aiseesoft MP4 Converter Suite is what I use, and it allows for the conversion of DVD to mp4 and the conversion of basically any other codec out there to mp4 (xvid, divx, avi, wma, etc)
I've successfully converted the Hot Tub Time Machine, Night of the Demons, some Voyager shows, and all play without fail.
if you need more info, email me, I'll help where I can.

Epic, DLNA, and transcoding... settings help.

I currently have a couple of problems...
I have a collection of music that is in WMA Lossless on my Windows Media Center. I am using Winamp to trans-code the music before it is sent wirelessly to my Epic. The music will play on my epic, however I get errors sending it over DLNA, saying that the format is not compatible. I have tried WAV and HE AAC for trans-coding. I am running DK17 and the Quantum Rom.
Also, I cannot seem to get handbrake to convert DVD rips to a playable format on my Epic which also function over DLNA.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to which formats I should be trans-coding to, to get these files working both on my Epic and over DLNA?
Bump... Anyone?

What you play over dlna is decided by codecs on the playing device not by the phone, whatever the destination device is you need to check the codecs for that. Note that there are more to codecs than just the extension name there are settings that may have to be matched.
Since it seems like a good chance you are using a pretty basic device you best bet is basic codecs. Xvid and mp3.
If those dont work then you should probably start saving for something like a ps3 where dlna playing is quick and pretty easy

I used handbrake to rip DVD in mpeg4 format (I believe I used H.264 codec with .m4v extension). DLNA streaming from PC to Epic works using allshare.
K lite Codec pack FTW
What OS are you running on the PC?
I have been using K Lite Codec Pack for years on XP, Win7 and a few Vista machines its my favorite codec pack, cccp codec pack is another good one to check out most people swear by one or the other.
Just as Masterface7 said its a codec thing on the target machine. DLNA (All share) has yet to fail to play any file i have thrown at it when playing to systems that are loaded up with all the codecs and are set up to play the same files local of there own HDD or from LAN.

I think OP is trying to do the opposite of what you described. He's trying to play PC files onto the phone. In other words, the PC is the source and the phone is the target.
Unfortunately, even if the file can be played natively on Epic, it may not be playable via allshare.

Mmm ic ya that's kinda sucky then. i have not tried to play many video files "On the Phone" But i would like to no the answer also if some one figures it out but i have a feeling we would need a new DLNA.akp
after searching the forum for my question this one sort of nailed it on the head, I have the same issue
Using allshare from my phone to play video files from my pc using the intel viiv media share I can see the video files but when try and open in my phone to lay the video files it says unspported file format. i record tv through my pc it can play it in windows media center and windows media player but will not play on my phone
does anyone have an answer for this issue?
To make a note, All Share will not play any content that has DRM...
Maybe I missunderstood samsung but it seems to me that allshare only half works if u can't play files both directions. There always seems to be some video file that will not work but the fact that NO video files work makes me think that allshare sucks. Its to bad xbmc can't run on ARM chips

Video Streaming

Hey. I am about the buy the G Tab 10.1. As my DVD is died I want to use the Tab for streaming videos to my HDTV. How it handles it? The videos are running smoothly?
I've streamed a few to my ps3 and worked great no issues
Careful!
When it comes to video FAR TOO MANY people talk about successes with the tab in generalities. If you want a specific answer then ask a specific question, as in describe specifically what video formats you want to play, where they are to be played from and what they are to be sent to.
Tegra 2 chipset tabs have limited hardware decoding support so don't expect any tablet to be able to play every file you throw at it that you download from the internet.
The way you formulated your question so far its unclear which online services you want to stream or if your source is a shared network drive. Either wary it is unknown what formats you want to play. My first reaction is buy a Roku or something for your TV media needs and only get a tab for what its truly designed for.

excellent answer. The tab is not an all purpose device. You are better off with Roku for streaming to tv

I would like to stream HD MKV format movies, but I will use ordinary low resolution AVI files.
Still only part of the information needed but enough to say you should tread carefully.
To relieve you from having to confess where they're from (LOL) I will say this; if you're encoding your own specifically for this device to play you can adjust your encoding settings to target a specific supported setup for things to play beautifully. It's not hard to do (stick with 720p format, H.264 high profile with B-Frames, CABAC, 8x8 transform and P-frames turned OFF).
If on the other hand you're downloading video randomly off of the internet in MKV format then you will hit some that works and some that doesn't. 1080p stuff that's freely available on torrent sites? Forget it.
TV shows off of EZTV in AVI format (xvid/divx) play wonderfully in Dice Player on the tablet.
Bottom line? You're better off with something like a Roku, Boxee Box or WD Live Streaming Media Player. By the way, each seems to have some support for applications on phone/tablet to control them remotely.
For those with the budget, it's nice to have a dedicated HTPC that also serves as a media server. I'm running Plex on mine to stream movies/shows from it's HDD to my tablet. I run Boxee on it but haven't experimented much with remote control of Boxee using a mobile device yet. My other TV in my apartment has a WD Live on it that pulls the media off of the HTPC so the HTPC serves not only as my playback device for my main TV but as a media server for all my mobile devices and TVs.
Don't get me wrong, these things can play media well, but I'm not going to haphazardly guide you into the belief that they'll play anything you throw at them with simple answers. Those of us who understand what they can do simply adjusted how we do things quickly to meet the specs of the devices and never looked back. I love my tab for media playback on the go.
I'd get a PS3 for your media streaming needs, it plays pretty much any file (MKV's can be handled with PS3Media Server or MKV2VOB) and you also get an awesome games console and Blu-Ray player.

[Q] Convert pyv to mp4 format?

Thanks to this forum, I was able to find my Samsung Galaxy Hub downloaded movies and move them to the external SD card. Thank you for that!
I've searched the web (and this site) for a way to convert pyv to mp4 or any other format that I can burn to a DVD and watch on tv or at least watch on the 27" desktop monitor. Anyone know of a way to do this?
Thanks,
Monica
To my understanding, the movies lic, is tied to the device you download them, unless a program breaks the security on the movie it won't be possible to rip them.
Now you could try to stream them to your tv.
