Herald/Wing Portal Development Thread

October 6th:
Im working on the website now for us. I'll be changing this thread from "gauging interest" to the "development thread" for users of the portal to post comments and such on this thread.
a good idea my friend, but a question:
A webpage containing info for herald users, or a kind of startportal with links?
If so, that is a good idea, because there is portals, like htc's one, but it sucks big time, there is never any new stuff there, and the links provided is not so good.
I have done alot of webdesign myself, but im a better graphics designer then a coder so if you need help, just say so
Great idea, am also a web page designer and would be glad to update the page with new links as they found.
A few basics to start with would be good such as:
blogs in mobile version (engadgetmobile,gizmodo,msmobiles,modaco...)
not sure if its possible but some sort of e-mail client would be nice such as google has done with their homepage.
ofcourse you can't forget to add your fav vidz for the week or month (or atleast what you would type to search cuz everyone uses their own means for viewing videos)
of course everyone would love to see some apps on there (i'm guessing if this became widespread you could only add freeware)
the main one would be a link to the herald forum here on xda dev (im sure i ain't the only who would use this)
Thats all I can think of now, keep us updated and I'll b glad to help with anything that I can.
Great idea btw
cheers
Yes, more of a portal idea.
I'll get to work on it tonight!
Please share links you believe would be of value to have in this portal.
Suggestions anyone?

I second those ideas! Joystiq.com blog would be awesome.
I can offer you webspace so you don't have to use your school's server. I can also register a domain. Let me know if you need anything. Send me a PM and we can discuss things. Good idea you have there.
id like to built a small, only herald based forum. if you got a webspace with php imma do my best to get a fresh designed mobile device board

Can you rigester .com's?
In this event, I'd like to leave suggestions open for website ideas..
www.HTCPortal.com?
Whats nice is, this could be used by ALL browsers of XDA, not just us Herald guys.
Tha1nonly,
If you would like to design a forum that will run in 320x240 that we can post messages from our device, that would be AWESOME! Let me know what you plan on doing with that, and I'll be sure to include the link in my portal.
Yes, of course. Send me a PM

Roms we can't download featured here 1,500plus views struck a nerve

{Over a twentytwo hundred views- i seem to have struck a nerve. Alot of us had this problem- then I solutioned it out for us all}
Says [ROM] in the title but theres no rom to be had????
You had this experience lately? They make you Click here... click there. These guys make an XDA member play whack a-mole-look-for-the-rom link games?
Because of proprietary registration requirement some featured roms on this page cannot be downloaded by XDA members. Why is this being allowed?
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA.
A few groups think they are entitled to change XDA(to its detriment) into their *****. Post links to these roms I'll put them here. We need to break these folks out of this habit. They say it isnt against XDA rules for them to do this- well then it wont be against XDA rules for me to post them
right in this post at the bottom of this post.
Its what ANDROID is all about. Open Source.
Mik and this Sac's Kingdom rom and some others cant be downloaded. (I like their roms- since I'm trying to download em-duh)
Has money changed hands? what is the deal?
Why are these roms --that we can't get unless we register on their crappy webpages-- featured on XDA Android Rom page? WTF?
And for all the sychophants, buttsniffer brigade and scene kids- racing to their rescue-:you see their troll comments in abundance: If every rom you ever download you need to sign up for their proprietary page- why do we need XDA then?
If this continues- XDA is cutting its own throat. I won't use a rom I have to sign up elsewhere to get it.
(So please post mirror links to Mik Roms and Sacs Kingdom Roms so the rest of us don't have to register)
XDA set up a perfectly reasonable system that worked JUST fine. WE DON'T NEED 50 websites to sign up for!!! - to get roms. All we need was XDA. This is a game changer.
I understand the sychophants and scenies will do what ever they are told.
But XDa had it right and these people are messing up a good thing- tryna make it their thing. And I call bull****!.
And this isn't a Q&A. This needs to be addressed by XDA- or we can just post links and nobody would be mad.
We just want straight-up Rom links!
If two guys do it- MIK and SACS to drive traffic for their own websites- it'll be prevalent in a week.
And XDA will not have any relevance.
The buttsniffers, sychophants and scene kids say- it only takes a minute to register over here, then over there, then here and here too! yeah! and there and...- blah blah blah.
What you gonna do when synergy or Kings or ACS or -take your pick- does this same thing?
And all the rest of them do it?
This needs to stop NOW.
here:
Hit thanks if you agree with me...
I agree completely so I am willing to give up this second post on the thread for what you guys need it for
No -rom development that doesnt lead to actual roms dont belong here

Asking why XDA allows this isnt a Q and A- these lames are taking up space that actual developers offering real roms can use. This practice needs to stop and wont be put in a lil box elsewhere. All these guys are doing with tacit XDA approval- it seems- is promoting proprietary webpages that take people off XDA. To their site. They offer us nothing but a registration elsewhere. They are just taking up XDA space and tryingto get XDA members onto their own webs.
I agree.

Damn it sounds like some folks got sour milk in their cereal. All of the sites you are complaining about are "FREE" to register on and do not ask anything or for any money from you to get access to their links. So if XDA admins don't have a problem with it why should anyone else. After all it only takes about 60 second more out of your day.

+1 completely agree.
i got no beef with signing up for something to download any of these roms. my phone is nothing without these devs, and i will get the roms from wherever they want to post them. if i had the time to sit down and tweek a rom to the way i like it i would but i dont. taking the extra 2 minutes to signup for another site is pretty ok with me

If you want the ROM take a couple of seconds and sign up for free on the developers site. Simple as that. Just be lucky they link there site here for us to get the ROM in the first place.
Both rom are my favorites!!
But never complain about how to download it..
Dont be lazy..

Oh gee- we get to look around on each new proprietary website for 15 minutes to sign up for something we dont want! The way it was was fine- these people are making XDA irrelevant. I don't want XDA to become irrelevant.
I want it the way it was and these people need to change their practices. XDA people need to get their head out of their asses.

Talk about taking up space. If your not happy here then feel free to move some place else. I've never had any issues downloading a rom on this site, 99% of the time I don't even have to go to the developers site to download the rom. They are doing this for us for free and your whinning about how to get the ROM?
Holly crap.. i was just thinking this today..
I want to download sacs new sense 3.0 rom but i have to register.. anyone have a mirror or straight link to his rom..
Great job to them for making this rom but cmon..
Haven't used a mik rom or any rom I need to sign up somewhere else.

I like XDA just as it is. I DONT want to go ELSEWHERE: to someone elses website to sign up for their stuff. I want to stay at XDA in a system that worked just fine.
Kinda toolish to tell me to leave XDA "if I'm not happy"... thats kinda weird logic- I want to stay on XDA- not leave it to go to proprietary websites. You need to take your pills.

Or you could just do what I do and not use the Rom. If they want to link to their hard earned site for their hard earned credit, let them. I don't want to register, I don't download, and I let everyone else be happy and merry and move on with their lives.
I think I want XDA to stay like it was and not become merely a quick cover page for 50 proprietary websites. I don't want to get in a troll/flame war with some nobody. I just want up and down links to roms(like its been). And i'm saying that if your frauding XDA just to post web page links for your own stuff- its you who need to "go elsewhere".

How to Promote Android Apps?

Hi, I'm a new app developer and I recently published my first app on the android market. Unfortunently I'm not getting any downloads besides those from friends. I've tried posted in app development forums like this one but that did not create an downloads. I also tried running an admob campaign and that did not create any downloads. I've been reading through the forums here and at other sites and it seems people won't download unless you have reviews and other people downloading. If others won't download because no downloads then nobody will download. I would really appreciate any advice. I'm not expecting or hoping for 10000 + downloads but I was hoping for at least 5 downloads since it's been almost 3 weeks now. Thanks for the suggestions.
go to smaller android blogs and ask them to review it. create youtube video and show how it works

Increase SEO of app..
In app details, enter large no. of keywords related with the app. Also, enter name of other similar popular apps as keyword.
It'll not just increase visibility in built-in search results, but also on external search engines and curators!
I might be able to help?
If you are looking to get your app promoted, I actually own and operate a website called Droid App of the Day, so if you would like a free app review visit my site (I cant post links as am a new member). A google search won't fail you!

Great article! Thanks for sharing this
Few words about google play app pronotion
Empirically, I determined that a new application has to be seen through search Google play. Search is all that we have without money for a marketing campaign.
Therefore, application should be optimized in the following order:
Application name in google play. This name may be different from the name displayed on the desktop device. The application name contains 30 characters, they should contain the main application keywords.
Description of the application must be clear and also contain keywords.
Attractive icons are very important.
The application must be beautiful and functional. No need to buy a device for $ 300-500 and install an ugly app. People want a beautiful application.
Publication of forums mentioned above.
Well if you don't mind paying for installations try appbrain. It features an option to pay per installation, for a small number of installations you can go as low as 0,20 per installation. They only allow to promote free apps though, and if your income is from ads you will probably not get your money back.
Other options are going to forums and telling the users about your app. Or contact review blogs. Appeggs usally posts good apps, or try app of the day blogs. But make sure your app is ready for the big public or else you might just end up getting bad reviews,
I wrote a little guide on how to promote your apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2225125
I wanted to add that the guide that i've been using (a small one) and that lead our team to initially post a thread here on XDA is: http://karim-ouda.blogspot.kr/2012/05/android-app-marketing-dumping-my.html
Interestingly enough, the author of that guide has posted here as well!
So keywords actually do stuff then? I only tried it in one app, I didn't tell anyone I built or released the app. Not even one or two people and admittedly it has had 200 downloads.
I thought it didn't really do anything. Think I have to add keywords to all my apps descs now.
Be careful with keywords: http://droid-blog.net/2011/06/13/how-to-not-get-kicked-out-of-android-market/
This is also interesting: http://droid-blog.net/2011/07/11/four-reasons-why-your-app-wont-be-successful/
And for tips: http://droid-blog.net/category/aso-2/
Ok. It is all from the same blog but I found it very helpful.
Advertising is one option, the other is to advertise your app on various forums, facebook groups. Making youtube video is also a good practice. It avoids you negative reviews as user has already been aware of all app features.
First of all, I want to say that I have no experience in promoting Android apps. But I did some work in promoting websites for businesses, and I can suggest some things.
Key is a having a functional app. If users download an app which is half done and has disabled functions because they aren't done yet, they are going to uninstall it. Second suggestion, a great design is makes a difference for a lot of people whether they're going to install it or not.
When you have both those things, you can get on with actually promoting the app. I would search for an SEO copywriter to get the description for your app. SEO copywriters are specialized in optimizing texts for Google. And I would look into advertising on Facebook. I think you can actually promote your apps, and advertise only on phones. This way your advertisement will only be showed to people who are using Facebook on their phone. User will probably more tempted to install the app.
My app is now having more 1600+ downloads! I am planning to do a major update which might increase the app exposure!
EDIT: I would like everyone to know that I have started a free review service, so if anyone in the process of promoting thier android app, they could consider requesting a free review from me!

Hello to all.
You can promote your apps at Appsorg.com :good:

App promotion
Thanks for all the interesting links and posts on app marketing ideas. We're a new app developer & in the same boat.
It seems that App Store Optimisation along with submissions to as many review sites as possible are good starting points. We started looking at pre launch strategies as well focusing on building up some marketing steam.
Check out pre apps. It's a pretty interesting idea. We also submitted to any app dev competitions and as many journalists as we could. Paid reviews are worth a look at as well if you can scrape a few 100 bucks together but make sure the site has traffic

Nice List, I have been scouring the internet to find good ones.
I'm glad to find this topic. I was thinking to open a separare one, but this one correlates with my question, so I'll ask it here.
Any Android gaming forums that covers upcoming game out there?
Does anyone know any decent Android forums devoted to gaming (with upcoming games section) like TouchArcade for iOS? I mean with daily activity like on TouchArcade.
(except those already mentioned - they don't have active 'Upcoming Games' sections)
Good list

Good list, and it includes sites that people actually visit. However, imo reviews outside of the app stores don't mean a great deal. You'll get much further by putting your app in front of the right people and having them talk about it, embedding social features in your app to encourage people to talk about it, encouraging good reviews and managing bad reviews (offering good support is one way to do this).
Honestly, these lists are quite outdated.
As soon as I finish sending emails around I will post an updated spreadsheet on our website.

Finding the forum

Does anybody else have serious issues locating this forum? For me it is not showing up in the search or on the New Devices and Compact forum views. I was able to add it in Tapatalk so mobile I am ok, but the only way I can get here is to go to the list of participated threads and back-step. The only way I found this was from the front page news post, and I have yet to see any link to the Maxx 2 forum.
It's not for me, either. I've got it subbed in my list, but that's the only reliable way to find it on the site.
Yeah, what's up with this? Also, if you type the name into the "Type to find device..." blank at the top of the page, literally the only thing that comes up for "droid turbo" is the Droid Turbo 1. It's under All Devices, if you can Ctrl+F with patience for it. I actually was already on XDA and had to go Google something like "xda droid turbo 2" tonight to find it..
Also, every Forum page on XDA now continuously reloads in Chrome. What the hell is wrong with this website lately?!
Who ever developed this site has poor maintenance skills. The android app is also acting crazy. Same problem, no one cares

I get that issue on Chrome on my phone. Doesn't do it on Windows (Chrome or Edge). I blame the ****ty themes. They're so screwed up, the push half the content off screen when I zoom (CTRL +) to compensate for my eyes.
Stupid ****ty themes. Can't even read half the threads if you try to use an older theme "This content is not available with your current theme. Please switch to one of the new crappy themes to read this content."
