Hi all,
Now that you can grab the official 2.2 ROM (thanks devs!!), what would you class the main reasons for running it, over something like Azure, which we've had for some time?
Please list your reasons here, as I really can't see the need to change from Azure?! This is what I can think of...
- For Sense
- For Radio (FM, etc)
- For working WiFi

During the last month and a half I have used Azure, CM nighlies and CM 6.1 RC1. Today I flashed the official 2.2 ROM update. I was very impressed by CM because of its speed and smoothness, especially CM 6.1RC1. The benchmark tests give almost identical results. Having in mind that CM is using the old .29 kernel I think it will get higher performance levels with the new .32 kernel. The only things I really miss on CM is the Sense dialer and the Sense weather widget. I really cannot tell which is better. The more ROMs available the better! I think it will be great if someone could implement dual-boot for the Legend
The obvious one being sense - I love it.
Working FM Radio, GPS, and Bluetooth (unlike most custom 2.2's I've used recently)
Working Market Place
Live wallpapers as standard
Better Radio (improved reception and wifi)
Ability to move programs to SD card without reformatting (a2sd)
Oh and the only program I used to root for is already built in - Flashlight! - its much better than any variants I've used before (3 light brightness settings etc).
oh and more HTC sensey widgets available too and WIFI hotspot program built in as standard
and I prefer the standard HTC keyboard instead of the bogstandard android one

I like sense, I like not having to reformat my sd card to move apps. I tried launcher pro plus (bought it) and adw, bought beautiful widgets expecting more from it but was disappointed.

Couldn't agree more. Also, having your wifi work is kinda nice.
Wifi is working loads better now, the new drivers are awesome.
I am actually not that impressed with the 2.2 update but I wasn`t expecting too much either.
The WiFi reception is great of course and a major plus. The camera is also very smooth and overall speed is superior to the old kernel. The list of official Froyo only features I need ends here though.
On the other hand...
- I don't mind reformating my SD Card to use App2SD
- I am not enough into FB or Twitter to "need" the Sense widgets
- Never used the FM radio before rooting and probably never will
- Already replaced the official keyboard with SlideIt
- I really hate not being able to clean up my app drawer
- The Froyo dock is ugly and lacks usability. LauncherPro and ADW are way better.
- I have freshly cleaned windows and my neck is flexible enough to check the weather myself. If I am already standing outside in the rain, I don't need my phone to tell me that my haircut is in danger.
- The flip clock is way too dominant for my taste. I prefer TypoClock's purity
- Pure Calendar Widget > HTC Calendar Widget
- Barnacle Wifi Tether works just fine. No urgent neccessity for the the official Hotspot feature. Other then that I don't mind using the USB cable to tether if I am already carrying the laptop with me. Wouldn't know who else to tether for anyways.
- No homescreen rotation with the official ROM
- I don't need 3 different settings for the flashlight. The one coming with Cyanogen is good enough. Just let there be light.
- CyanogenMod can be customized and has a lot of useful setting that you can't change with the official Froyo
Of course I am happy that we finally received the update but only to see the new kernel and radio (and maybe some other Froyo goodies) in one of the next CM releases.

-Offcial = stable. There will be no "not working/won't fix" list. It uses newest drivers, CM is still far behind.
-Everything in Sense is chained : Contacts ~ Facebook/Twitter/Flickr ~ Gallery ~ Calendar/Agenda ~ Clock/Weather
- Official Froyo Quadrant's pts = Azure's pts (800~900)
- And ofcourse, the infamous FM Radio rocks!
My biggest reason to use an official is Sense. I love the Clock widgets because I have several timezones to keep track of, and I love them to all be visible on my first home screen. I can see the time where I am in the status bar, my home in the USA, and for my girlfriend in Qatar. I could never find another app as good as HTC's clock when I was using CM-based ROMs.
The fact that whitetigerdk and Paul had the official ROM rooted in less than 24 hours after release gave me no reason not to move from Gratiend.
I like the stock ROM for few things. Have currently loaded Vodafone based ROM and no issues so far.
- Stable exchange connectivity (email APK in other custom ROMS stops working after couple of send/receive (push) - have tried almost everything. Maybe MoDoCo rom was kind of stable, but again it was based on the stock ROM.
- Wi-Fi tethering is perfect
- FM Radio
Finnally a stable and official rom
Yeah the main thing for me was getting exchange email working nicely.
Push mail (exchange) working fine on you guys' official froyo? I still find CM RC1 email apps to be better for my exchange push mail.
And actually one of the thing I missed the most from RC1 is notification power widget.

I enjoy using the official rom because the GPS, FM Radio, Bluetooth, Wifi work. I use the FM Radio quite often. I prefer sense of the stock interface, everything just works nicely and fits in perfectly.

My answer is short and simple: i won't switch to stock Froyo ROM no mather what happens
Now i'm running CM6.1 RC and extremely satisfied with. The only thing i'm missing is flash support.

I realised that stock HTC rom is better.
Androot STILL WORKS for softroots and give me the flexibility to do all i need to do with root access. (take snaps, clean cache, titanium backup, etc).
So while my country hasn't actually received the updates, i am looking forward to it.
True right now stock Froyo might be better. But when the cyanogenmod guys release gingerbread, that would be better.
The thing is that developers are always faster than HTC. Plus this might be the last update from HTC. Then stock will be far less than good enough.

Your speech sounds like pro linuxers over everything... maybe you don't need any goodies in your
Phone, so please buy a 3210 nokia then... weather in time widget is fun, useful sometimes and why not, we love to see our phones doing some eye candy. The way everything is linked is simply amazing... and maybe you don't use any social features.... but today people who want a smarphone is for social uses mainly.
Maybe a cell phone doesn't need radio feature 'per se ' but if the phone has, a why don't use it?? I'm sure more people than you think buy this phone because the radio....
Since I have my legend i install every rom was released and I loved them, but sense interface even tough if it swallow a lot of resources is a very good interface for a cell phone and it's copied in a lot of apps or widgets.... maybe your intention is not to be rude but you sound soooo rough....

I've tested several ROMs on my DZ and now I use Vision Unity.
It's basicly a 2.1/3.0 Sense hybrid ROM giving you real eye-candy.
In the latest version (1.29.0) I found some bugs/disadvantages:
- the homescreen does not rotate on keyboard open
- sometimes it lags a bit
- it takes about 300 MB ram after start, leaving you just about 70MB free (other roms are much better in this criteria)
- I experienced already few times sudden phone restart (phone just lying on table, no aggresive apps run like 3d games etc, and after few hours I take the phone and it asks for PIN) = pretty critical if you wait for an important call.
but among the roms I've tried, this seems far the best if you decide to have HTC Sense. If you can miss sense, stick to CM7, there are really cool features like finetuning the display auto brightness intensity levels (really killer feature to battery life!)
I enjoy Virtuous Sense 2.0.0 because I find it to be consistently fast and responsive, everything works for me all the time, and I still have enough ram to run a couple of apps in the background, unlike every sense 3.0 rom/hybrid I've tried.
Highly highly recommended.

Cyanogen MOD 7 RC 1 or if your so inclined, nightly build #156.
- So far after testing a few ROM I've been back to CM7. Why? Once installed and running and even with keep all my favourite apps open and running in the background, I still manage to keep about 80mb of ram and CPU usage is usually between 2% and 82% with an average of 4 or 5 programs running. Ok a bit excessive I know but it still works.
I have custom memory script running that's available here on XDA and various other gadget. Battery life is usually fairly consistent with 1day 9hours of use. I use the device quite a bit in a day.
Power saving options: Brightness is set to 20% only, Juice Defender installed.
Running background application is limited to my email mostly unless I'm doing some work. Most of the time email, exchange, Facebook and twitter are sync.
I'm using Launcher Pro with the license for my main interface. Here are some screen captures for your pleasure.

Personally, my favorite ROM is MIUI.us
The stock Music app in it, is my favorite music app by far, I especially love how it not only gets the lyrics, but also scrolls them karaoke style with the song. It also has a nice theming system, and a great built in theme. Everything overall looks nicer than stock Android.
Another great thing about it is the status bar, you can enable/disable USB Mass Storage using an on/off slider in the notifications, and I love the way the switches work in the status bar.
Then there's the stock Launcher, which is much nicer than the stock Android launcher in my opinion, though I still replace it with Go Launcher, again, my personal favorite.
If you're looking for a responsive, nice looking, and user friendly ROM, MIUI.us would be my suggestion. It also has a nice backup feature with their servers. You just need to make an MIUI account. Not sure if it's still necessary, but back when I did it, I had to go to the chinese MIUI website and use Google Translate to make my account <_<

The best rom is hardest to define because it's really up to personally preference. MIUI? Sure if you're into that whole thing,but frankly I have trust issues with Chinese tech companies for reasons that have been in the news here and there.
Cyanogenmod is a great AOSP rom even though it's not 100% AOSP it's quick, intuitive, and has lots of options that would allow you to customize it as you want.
There are other roms such as OTA roms that have been made that are also very quick, but not quite as intuitive and they are not as easily customized as some other roms.
Now we get into Sense. There are ports of great roms from other devices that may have a minor bug here and there. Unity is a great rom but I know it needs work on it simply because of little bugs here and there, lack of ram of the Vision, and the battery drain of 1.31 is not so appealing. These roms do not perform as well as Sense roms made for the Desire Z, how ever you do not have some sense 3.0 features that make Sense so much more enjoyable to use.
I currently run Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 and it's a very quick rom, but it lacks the eye candy that we all would love with Unity. However what I love about the sense community is that there are many themes and many ways to enhance sense with add-ons here and there which I have done.
I want to clearly state that this is just my opinion and you should try out the roms for your self to get your own opinion and know your personal preference what appeals to one person is not always the same as the next.

Super cm7 is still my favorite. I keep trying other roms but I always come back to this one because it is super fast and clean. Mexdroid is pretty good to but it is too themed for me. I think they are working on a more stock version which could be pretty sweet.

Actually, I'm now running the "Virtuous Sense v2.0.0 :: Enhanced & Optimized Stock ROM (2.42.405.2)". I miss the Sense 3.0 features, but I can try to flash some available mods. Especially the brightness setting in the quick setting.
But it's a small tax for a stable ROM without restarts.
Ok people, like the tittle says, state your reasons.This is for current ROMs we have available at the moment and also lets put in perspective that we will never get a official GB source for our Vibrants. I feel this will help any newb in deciding what he/she would like to flash on his/her Vibrant and also those of us who will not succumb to ads telling you your phone is old as **** and you NEED to buy a new one or else you will never be cool again and will live the rest of your life as a looser with hairy palms.
Tell us what ROM you're on. Try to be professional when stating your reasons. Give us your opinion on other ROMs you were on or tried but DO NOT flame the ROM cuz we all know Devs work really hard to give us (for FREE) these masterpieces for us to enjoy or else we could be stuck on stock and there ain't nothing worse than that. NO FLAMING other people's opinion also, that's why they are called opinions (and just like assholes) we all have one. Fire away..

The absolute ONLY reason to use froyo is for gps support. That said, the gps on this phone is crap anyway so there is really no reason for froyo. Gingerbread has been faster, smoother, and more stable for me.
I'm one of those that will keep using my Vibrant as long as possible. I'm currently on Bionix 1.3.1. Battery and GPS (the two biggest issues regarding the Vibrant) work great for me. I tried CM7 on my other Vibrant and I got to tell you its pretty smooth, responsive and stable but it did not beat my other Vibrant with Bionix on a overnight battery standby test. I made sure for both of them to have running just the necessary system apps for the test. CM7 GPS does work it seems but it took forever to lock inside my house compared to my Bionix with the s.gps.2 installed (5 sec.). I did not do a Navigation test on both so I can't call this a complete test. I will stay on Bionix because I need a ROM that is as close to 100% in stability and functionality and I feels it (Bionix) gives it to me.

The one thing that I'm jealous about 2.3.
My reasons for moving to CM7:
- Much smoother than even some of the nicer FY roms I used
- Little Details (battery graph, customization options, etc)
My reasons for moving back to Froyo from CM7:
- Battery life
- GPS
- Battery life
- Seriously: battery life (even with Bali's kernel, I'd have to charge at least 2x a day)
CM7 is ready for primetime. However, the Vibrant is not ready for CM7. The devs don't have source and don't (and IMHO, won't ever) have GPS drivers.
Speed and overall smoothness of whole phone an battery is ok an sometime excellent 12hrs is good enough really customization of themes

I moved to cm7 cause of the mindblowing performance difference... just no lag or instability and i have desktop class browsing when i overclock thats even faster than the pentium 1.6ghz laptop i used to use o.o

cm7, reasons (in no order):
i like having the newest version of android (fragmentation? i was running 2.3.5 like the day it came out), gps works (i ran it before gps worked, though because it is worth it) and gets to ~3m accuracy when the best i got on froyo was ~6m, crt effect, overall better performance, i've ran cm7 on other devices and it's always been good to me and provides a consistent experience.
basically, with the gps being fixed, the oc/uv built into the stock kernel (providing pretty good battery life even at 1.3Ghz), and it being extremely easy to flash i don't see why anyone would still be running froyo.

Even with all this, It is very likely that I will move back to 2.3.x again if the GPS reboot issues are fixed. For those unknowing, The GPS works in 2.3.x but if you turn the radio off, it will not work again until you reboot the phone. This is the biggest issue for me.
Just flashed Biffmod 1.3 (GB 2.3.5) last Thursday and was actually very surprised at how well it runs.
-Battery life is actually better on this ROM than what it was on Bionix 1.3.1
-GPS is on par with what I had on froyo
-Runs smoother than a baby's bottom
-Web browsing is more responsive
All-in-all, I'm happy using this as my DD. Everything works as well, if not better than on bionix. But we all know, YMMV.
I tried MIUI and Simply Honey 5.0
Both were awesome and looked awesome.
However since then I have switched back to Trigger 3.2
The biggest reason for me is battery life.
Even though some of the stuff (battery graph, new market, animations) aren't as good as the GB roms it has great battery life.
I'll probably give it a couple months and try the GB roms again..
T-mobile screwed us over so we'll probably never get the source code for GB.
If the GB leak came out the GB Roms would take leaps over the FROYO roms.

very true...
So it seems alot of you prefered moving up to a GB ROM. I tried CM7 and MIUI looks to iPhonish to me which is not bad but I dont want launcher icons on my screens (beside what is on my dock) which also brings the issue of it not having an app drawer and thats what I liked from Android when I moved from the Iphone. So besides those two which is the most stable GB ROM out there so I could install it on my second Vibrant?

i'm using cm7 with the newer gpsd file (i don't know if it's now included in cm7 or not, but it's pretty easy to find) and i just turned gps off then back on, then turned airplane mode on then back off and then opened gps status without rebooting and locked 10/11 sats with a 6m error and i'm inside.
The only reason I haven't tried Cyanogen Mod 7 yet is because I still haven't seen anywhere in the developing section with screen-shots so as to visualize what all the fuss is about.
2nd Reason is that there has always been issues with the GPS and Cyanogen Rom, I know a lot of people here don't seem to care about GPS, but for those of us who do rely on it because of the transportation aspect of our jobs, its a lifesaver, and frees us from using laptops and software to route ourselves in constantly unfamiliar territory.
I just recently saw a thread about the fix for GPS with Cyanogen 7, but man it seems a little overwhelming proceedure wise and honestly I'm not sure If I'm good enough to start replacing scripts and editing the scripts as it requires. As opposed to using the other methods on other ROM's that are more Noob or Tech friendly.
Anyway, looking to see what this ROMS like, and if its speed and and functionality is worth it.
I'm running Crazy 8, with all the tweaks and bells and whistles, and I've found true love at last. I mean after going threw many ROM's this one finally has it all, with every aspect of functionality I need to make it a Great work and personal device know, and has freed me up from using my laptop while on the road. But again, for curiosity sakes and having an open mind, before I dismiss Cyanogen 7, Just want to see if its all cracked up to be as everybody here raves about.
And please, I don't need advice about sticking with what I already have, I've already made that decision, what I'm asking for here is the links with screenies and if the GPS really works well or great, just not half ass, and what is involved with getting the GPS to work as great, as what I've got going presently!
Use CM7 based MIUI custom rom LE Lithium 4.0 , everything works out of the box...even GPS...just need a reboot to use GPS..that's all
GPS does not work great. And neither does it really on any of the Froyo ROMs.
If you actually rely on GPS for work, get one of these

and you will have a 0.5 feet accuracy with instant lock GPS, ANYTIME, on any ROM.
Screenshots. That's hard. CM7 supports the theme engine which means you can apply a theme to the entire ROM in one click. There are literally several hundred themes for it...so really a screenshot is not a good idea. HOWEVER, I will link you to these screenshots. They are of the theme I am currently using with it. It works great.

Battery. It drains a bit quicker than Froyo ROMs. It's not horrible by any means. In addition, you can now get a 1800mah battery for $23 that's Genuine from Samsung. Using that I get ~18 hours of usage with about 2.5 hours of screen on time per charge.
Performance: Due to gingerbread optimizations, the performance is light years ahead of Froyo ROMS. Your CPU will be roughly 4-5 TIMES faster. Because of that, the phone will be nearly indistinguishable in speed from new Dual Core phones. Everything is instant and smooth.
Options: CM7 is FAMOUS for the amount of customization. There are a PLETHORA of options you can tweak under settings-->CM7 Settings. Everything from adjusting the automatic brightness behavior (you can control how bright the screen is depending on how much light the light sensor is reading from the outside) to adjusting how strong and in what patterns the haptic feedback will be for every button press. Also, you can adjust all of the quick toggles in the Status bar as well as add or remove new ones. You've always wanted a dedicated camera button or music button? No problem. You can assign long-pressing the search button to start up your camera or long-pressing the menu button to start up your music player. There are literally more options than you will need.
The choice is yours.
Cyanogen mod is just plain AOSP, slightly themed. You can also theme it using the Theme manager that comes with it.
I do recommend trying Revamped LE, it is a good, stable, rom.
The biggest thing for me between Gingerbread and Froyo, is the screen color and performance. The colors on Gingerbread are much brighter and cleaner. Also, the contrast is much better... You can adjust the color settings in the Voodoo control app. The performance is very good... it's much smoother and snappier than a Froyo Rom. Overall, it takes much more advantage of our hardware than 2.2 does, with the exception of GPS. The GPS is spotty at times, other times it will work fine, then sometimes not at all.... Until you reboot.
The process to flash CM7 is very easy now, just download it and flash via ROM Manager, just like you would a Froyo ROM. It does all the fancy stuff for you. Once you have CM7 installed you can flash any version or variant of MIUI or CM7 you'd like.You have to ODIN back to stock if you decide you want to go back to Froyo though.
The only thing holding me back from cm7 or miui was the ridiculous flashing process. I definitely will try now that I know its easier.
gotta ask, does cm7 work okay with GB bootloaders?

That's a bit of an exaggeration. I'm running the Gingerbread bootloaders on CM7 and everything is working fine. If you're already on the Froyo ones, however there's no need to switch over.

Today i installed the CM-9 ROM by ErwinP on my 1 year old Wildfire.
Its good with some issues:
1. Camera doesn't work.
2. gallery has a bug. The albums were visible when we tap and hold on the screen and drag to left or right. when we lift the finger the screen goes blank.
3. menu loading is slow every time.
4. screen lock is present but you have to select slide in the lock screen settings.
For any further issues, i'll update here, as I am new to this forum.
Some facts:
The ROM after install takes 151.8 MB of internal memory.
I have custom MTD partition of 160MB and 15MB cache. I'm getting 290 of internal memory but the system initially is taking 40 MB(I don't know why.)
So, usable is 250MB internal memory.

first two issues you pointed are already given issues. read op to check common issues present as well as replacement app particularly for gallery and some other stuff.
other than that i think i dont have any issues like the other things you mentioned.
try 210/25 custom mtd partitions...it worked for me
@pauch_19: thanks for the information. I will look into alternatives to the bugs. Also you can try my custom MTD settings if you want more internal memory. Can you help me in getting the Market app to work(or any alternative app).

Did you flash Google apps first? Or just install 3.4.4 apk?
You need to flash gapps I think, don't bother with 3.4.4 you should get an auto update to the new play one eventually.

Yeah, you'll need the entire gapps since the market also relies on some extra stuff.
(I had the same problem when I just installed the market .apk on my Elf.)

that's probably the reason why you have more space on your internal memory because you forgot to flash gapps. incase you havent, flash gapps as what scratch and nejc suggested.. its also posted in op. its the latest gapps, about 52 mb in size so you will have to set your mtd partitions to default which is 250. im using the modified version which is just about 19 mb.

After getting the solution suggested by "Scratch0805". I again installed the ROM and along with the gapps at the same time. This time, I have taken the partition as 200 and 20. And after the boot, in terminal i found that system is using 186.4 MB. Still 13.6MB left.
Note: i installed the gapps with the size 51.88MB unmodified zip.
Now, everything works as it should have with camera as the exception.
One thing I want to know, what should be the CPU settings to follow for more than a day of battery life. Previously, i was using ON-DEMAND with 264-672MHz
and getting less than 22hrs of backup in CM7.

mine is 352/729 smartassv2. on minimal - regular use, mine last a day and a half..i really think it depends on phone usage.
@pauch_19 : So, it means you are not using any apps to control the cpu settings.
I also used the smartassv2 governor and i found that backup decreases as it was in on-demand.
But, the smoothness in using gets better in smartassv2. So, can you tell me which governor will be better in terms of battery life and speed or any post where its mentioned.
atm i dont have too many apps which is also i think one reason why my phone is alot smoother, responsive and gives me a very decent battery life. In performance - processor, my cpu frequency minimum is 352 and 729 max. i used this values even when i was on cm7 nightlies coz its much stable..havent tried it at 768 though cpu governor is smartass v2.

I'm using the miui rom which is basically a modified version of cm9, I use setcpu just to set an underclock profile for when the screen goes off. My settings are on demand176/576 and powersave 176/352 as I've noticed that unless i'm straining the cpu by playing angry birds or watching a video with on demand my cpu tends to stay low doing normal things like making a phone call or checking xda but with smartassv2 it seems to jump high even when it doesn't really need to.

I also read a post earlier where members are saying CM7 is better than SplashMOD. If its true, kindly tell me If you know which CM7 nightlies version do i use and how to remove the apps(I once used CM7 # 256,I didn't like the camera UI but it was smooth though) I then, switched to SplashMOD 1.6.

But, I haven't tried on 176 because i thought then I'll get delay in getting calls and also lag in the background process. If these are not the issues you are getting, then I will must use these, and I can say that I will get at least 35+hrs of backup. And how MIUI is as compared to CM9?

Somewhere in themes and apps section is a thread for miui camera, its a flashable zip which will give you a much nicer camera ui than the cm7 one.
Miui is beautiful as a standalone Rom but gets even better if your prepared to put some effort in, it has the same bugs as cm9, but spend a few hours setting up workarounds and it runs like a dream, I only have 2 problems now 1 is the camera (nevermind tho, I have a digital cam anyway) 2 is if you like theming your phone miui is awesome for it, the only problem is it was designed for hdpi and gingerbread so all the top themes need modding to fit ldpi and ics.

@Scratch0805 : I don't have any knowledge of modding. But I will definitely try MIUI ROM and can you tell me which CM7 version you are using, just asking if I may try that one anytime soon along with the miui camera.

Personally I haven't tried Splashmod so I really couldnt say CM7 is better. I only tried CM7 and Im really impressed at how Cyanogen turned it into a very nice and fast rom. Before trying erwin's CM9 I was on nightly 256 build 14 and everything is working well.
I will try that one also with the miui camera Scratch0805 suggested. If all goes well, at the end of the day I'll be using CM7.
The camera should be fine on any rom I think, splashmod is basically either cm7 or oxygen (can't remember which one its based on atm as the "dev" changes his mind more often than I change my wallpaper ) with some apps removed or substituted for another. Underneath though it will always be cm7 or oxygen.
I'm on miui v4 atm and loving it but I'd recommend till you get into the swing either cm7 nightly 256 or keep an eye on the cm7 thread and look for the unofficial builds which have been built by erwinp and cobje, they may have a few bugs though I doubt anything serious otherwise they wouldn't release it + we are still clinging on to some fairly talented people that will most likely suss out the bugs and let everyone know how to fix them in the thread.

Well CM9 is really great, i love it, but sometimes my phone randomly reboot. Especially when i start phone.apk. Anybody with the same problem? I'm running on 352-710 MHz.
Also my GPS doesn't work.
