hey guys
i just rooted my nexus S
now i wanna know about these things
1.Must have apps for rooted nexus S (paid or free anything)
2.How to block application from auto opening?
3.How to block application from accessing internet?
Thanks in advance
I can answer question #2. Check out the app "Autostarts." I was using it on my old rooted phone, it is basically like msconfig for Windows... controls what starts up with phone. But it requires root, and I have only had my Nexus for a few days and haven't rooted yet. Soon.
Also to answer #1... Barnacle and Wireless Tether for Root both do the same thing... allow wireless tethering with 4G speeds (if you have 4G model).

Correct, but I have the Nexus S 4G and the standard wi-fi tether bumps me down to 3G.
One reason for me to root (though I haven't yet) will be to have 4G wi-fi tether through a 3rd party app. I should have been more clear in the post.

Many more features in Wireless Tether app such as:
- battery temp
- access control
- log
- bluetoooth
- change channel and transmit power
- notification on connect
to name only a few.
The built in wireless tether only allows you to change SSID and encryption method as far as I can tell.
Must have apps for root:
Titanium Backup
SetCPU
Shoot Me
Root Explorer
BLN (Needs compatible kernel)
Voodoo (Needs compatible kernel)

i think you should try some custom roms & kernels instead.
In most cases, custom rom + kernel will give u better performance (much faster), additional features, more control over your phone, and a whole lot of fun with all the flashing involve.

I'm still on 2.1, but I rooted my phone using the one click root method. I downloaded the Wireless Tether app from the Marketplace, but I can never get the phone never sets itself up as a hotspot using that app. What am I doing wrong? No, I don't pay the $30 for the hotspot option from Sprint. Is that the problem?
To use Wireless Tether, you may need a custom kernel for it to work (not sure though)... Although, if you are still on the stock rom, I would suggest flashing MobileAP through CWM instead (LINK)

No, no error messages. I try to tether my iPad to my phone, but the hotspot never shows up. No data is ever transferred or uploaded.
As I don't know, does the iPad support connecting to ad hoc networks? If not, try installing MobileAP, which supports infrastructure mode (link in previous post).
Try downloading the wireless tether app from the google code page instead of the one from the market. There is a specific version for the Epic. Don't think the market one works correctly.

+1 to this, you may want to try searching "wireless tether" in the Epic forums. I recall in a few threads this was mentioned with specific version #s.

I came from the evo and I remember there being a hack that would let you use the sprint hotspot for free instead of wireless tether, is there a way or a fix in the making for this, cuz I prefer that app over the wireless tether app. Thanks!

You can't use 4g on the Sprint HotSpot App? Why do you prefer it? (I've never used it..)

Speaking of Wireless Tether... I notice the setting in there for security (wireless encryption) but I can only turn it on or off, not select the type (i.e. WPA2) Am I missing something or is it just automatic selection?
Its like that and you can't change it..I'm not sure if the updated experimental version has it or not..its on their website if ya wanna check it out

It only allows you to use WPA/WPA2-PSK as the encryption method. Personally I think the wireless tether is a pretty good app, In addition to the encryption it gives you the option of using Access control, to deny or allow connections to the phone.
Just loaded the new CM7 nightly 63 with 2.3.5 and Netarchy's 1.3.9 cfs and my native wireless hot spot which was apparently blocked with 2.3.5 update still works.
My guess is that Netarchy didn't merge the function which blocked it in the kernel so if you are on a stock 2.3.5 rom try the kernel to see if you get it back.
why not just use wifi tether and be done with it?
Because wireless tether ( I assume that's what you mean) doesn't create a true wifi hot spot. Try connecting another android device or tablet and you'll find out. Not everything works with wireless tether.

Pretty sure. Settings shows Android Version 2.3.5, Build GRJ90 and Baseband D720SPRKE5
Here's the scenario:
Turn on phone, go to wireless settings, turn on Portable Wifi Hotspot.
Turn on wifi-only tablet. Find my wifi hotspot. Connect.
It works exactly the same now as it did before.
It may (or may not - I don't know) be worth pointing out that there is not and may never be 4G in my area and that most of the time 3G isn't functional, so this isn't a very fast connection.

I have the AT&T Nexsus S and the native tether is not working right out of the box. I know this is for Sprint you are talking about, and since I just got phone Saturday I am trying to learn all this mods and stuff, so would I able to install the CM7 nightly 63 and would I have to get the 2.3.5 or could I just leave the 2.3.4 that is installed on my Nexsus S?
Also will have to look up what NEtarchy's 1.3.9 cfs is LOL
I just got my new Nexus S 4G (Sprint) last night from eBay and it came with 2.3.4 preloaded. I just verified with a coworker who has already upgraded hers to 2.3.5 (also Sprint) and she says that the wifi hotspot feature still works for her just fine. I was going to hold off on doing the update because of this, but now I think I can safely upgrade. Yay!
I am on Bugless Pete's Stock + root and Netarchy 1.3.7 cfs... No workie. I will try 1.3.9 shortly.

Loaded netarchy 1.3.9 cfs for stock roms, cleared cache, dalvik-cache, and fix perms.. Tethering still doesn't work.
How I checked:
Start tethering, 3g data disappears within 10 seconds. Disable tethering, 3g data comes back within 10 seconds.

Since it is a feature code added to the account, and the process for enabling WiFi hotspot includes humans, I highly doubt he is telling you a lie. I also doubt that he is the only person in the world that has working WiFi hotspot on 2.3.5.
Edit for clarification:
Humans make mistakes. The appropriate feature code could have been accidentally added to his account by mistake, or tether blocking might not be working correctly in this person's area.

Mine works!
Had a stock 2.3.4 rooted, downloaded the update from google. booted into clockwork recovery and applied the .zip. When it finished it showed unlocked but had stock recovery. Used the one click root and reinstalled clockwork.
My native wireless tether allows my XooM tablet to connect. I don't subscribe to that service either...
If you're on netarchys I believe he does something to enable native tether. Oh and btw, after turning it on, it will disable 3g but wait few minutes and it will come back in white icons. Just make sure you give it some time.

I have a stock Android Nexus S 4g with 2.3.5 and wireless hotspot is working.
It came from Best Buy yesterday with 2.3.4 and I did an OTA prior to rooting it.
The only modification made to the phone has been 1clickroot.
You guys who are having issues with the native hotspot not working after 2.3.5, should look into buglesspete's flashable fix for it. It's in the 4g dev forums and even downloadable through CWM. Not sure if it's just for his rom or not.

I've seen a little about this - but couldn't find the answer.
Sorry if I'm repeating on someone else's thread.
I've got a Rooted (EC07) Continuum right now & just came from a Droid 1 (which I loved).
I can't find a way to remove the 3G Mobile Hotspot app from Verizon.
On my D1, I previously used Wireless Tether 2 & it was so awesome.
No when I open up the 3G otspot, it takes the device that is hooking up to my hotspot to a Verizon web page that requests a subscription.
I just want to use it free again, like on my D1.
Any suggestions on how I could do this?
I have already tried downloading other Wireless Teher apps apps & none of them seems to work properly.
Thanks.
I suppose you could remove the app with an explorer or Titanium Backup. I doubt it would get rid of it in the settings menu. I use open garden, and it works fine (assuming you aren't trying to connect with something that can't use ad-hoc)

Why not you guys check out wireless tether beta 7 or whatever they are onto now, and go to settings, and set it as a fascinate xD then you can actually use it as a regular network, not adhoc xP
Also, I think 3g hotspot is a part of settings.apk if I remember correctly xP so you can't really get rid of it :l

The app is built into the framework of the ROM I believe, or is tied into another piece of the ROM that can't be removed. The only way to really "remove" it is to use a launcher that allows you to hide app icons and just remove it from view.
Barnacle wi fi tether works

Thanks guys.
I appreciate the info. Just got wifi tether 6.
Also you can "freeze" 3g hotspot, and anything else that's annoying you, using "Bloat Freezer", found in the market for $1.99. Or with Titanium Backup Pro (paid version) which is worth its weight in gold anyway.
that literaly does nothing except prevent the app from running and the app dosnt run in the background when your not using it. the bloat freezer is ment for apps using gps and updating weather that drains your battery.
Hello
I have a Droid X on 2.3 It's rooted and everything and recently I tried tethering. Every time I connect to my phone with my iPad it sends me to Verizon's page to subscribe to tethering plan. I was using Wireless Tether..but that stopped working..so now I'm using Barnacle Wifi Tether. That was working great until I updated to 2.3 I saw in the market WIFI Tethering but that wouldn't even download. Anyway for me to tether without verizon sending me to the subscribe to a tethering plan page?
Thank you

I am very curious now, because I am still on Froyo, and I just checked and my DroidX does indeed have the DataManager .apk and the database files! (by the way, the database has 50,000 records!) Does this mean that big red is also tracking tethering on Froyo??? The reason I kept refusing to switch to GB is because of that issue. Hmm..
Tried the patch above twice
Back to the drawing board I guess... I'm not really sure how to figure out this adhoc thing... With the beta app above, open garden, and barnacle I can see the SSID but it will not connect, and when I'm on my Xoom it says adhoc not supported. But the thing is, I could tether before, and I could connect with the xoom; before I installed MIUI 1.10.7 android version 2.3.5 gb
Before I flashed this rom I never heard of this adhoc... I am reading that there may be no fix for this right now, is that correct???
The link above installed okay, but when I go to open the app it installs I get a force close =/

And example is
Use root explorer
Go too app data
Click on wifi tether
Check to make sure under owner execute is checked.
make sure if you got the wugfresh patch you select droid x under profile in settings. Common mistake.
Also with a custom rom you may want to go back to stock and try the wugfresh process again. I can assure you it works on a droid x. I've done it many times not with a custom rom though.
