Hi all!
I'm sure many of you are confident on doing this, but some are not. This quick how-to is for the scenario when you have Froyo installed with Recovery3e which is the default recovery and you're trying to make a backup of your firmware in Rom Manager without flashing another kernel via Odin.
You click on "backup", the phone reboots to ClockWorkMod Recovery. Or not. You will see Recovery3e popping up with an error message telling you that the package is not signed. Fear not, here's the solution:
Pre-requisites:
Phone must be rooted
Rom Manager installed
ClockWorkMod Recovery installed from within Rom Manager
After getting the error message, just take the battery out and simply apply volume UP + Home button + Power button to get to recovery and CWM will come up, doing what you've asked it for!
Just installing CF-Root with Odin is the simplest solution for me which roots your device and installs ClockworkMod

Is there any useful advantage to loading the latest version of CWM using the market app?
I originally flashed mine with CF-Root, but since have flashed the speedmod kernel and that seems to have changed it again.

I have just updated my rom manager and the change is a new layout with icons and it looks much nicer
The guide is for those, who don't want to change the factory kernel in the rom. Flashing CF-Root/SpeedMod/Voodoo or whatever you sympathize with is the best solution I agree, as it comes with several benefits aside rooting, but not everyone wants to do it that way.
I would add, just to be sure, after backup copy the backup file to external SD card..

hi, i did the same and got the update.zip in my phone but when i try to apply it during 3e recovery, i always get the <E:failed to verify whole-file signature xxxxx Installation abort>
can anyone help me with this issue?
many thanks in advance.
p/s: the phone is already rooted and rom manager installed with the latest CWM recovery 2.5.1.2
current firmware 2.2, kernel version 2.6.32.9, build number froyo.DXJPE
same issue as last post, I have successfully rooted the phone with oneclick, I have installed rom manager, I have flashed CWR (v2.5.1.2) phone is GT-I9000, Firmware is 2.2.1, kernel 2.6.32.9, build FROYO.BOJS5 and baseband is I9000XXJPY
I checked, root is working and rom manager got the proper root access
if I access "backup your current ROM" it takes me to the recovery v3 mode, where there is no backup options. if I try to apply the update.zip, I got the error signature not verify. I remove the battery, I reinsert it and the phone reboot to the recovery3, I apply the update.zip again and get the same messages, again and again.
I could probably install CF-ROOT but I would like to do a nandroid backup first and this is never presented in the options

Same here!
On same ROM...
There is an excellent guide on this forum, and on another one that specify that galaxy s with froyo 2.2.1 and recovery3 needs to install CF-ROOT :
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000
and
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1035995
what this thread here is about is how NOT to need CF-ROOT
this is a bit like biting your own tail. I think the most important part for me is: if you flash another kernel, can you revert to your previous one as it is not possible to do a nandroid backup before flashing the kernel
for warranty sake, it would be important to be able to revert to a nandroid backed-up ROM, then revert to recovery3 than unroot the phone before bringing it back in case of need of repair
I found an app, sgs kernel flasher, it might be possible to backup the original kernel this way
so it would go like this :
root the phone (onclick root worked well with my phone)
install rom manager
install sgs kernel flasher
backup the kernel
flash CF-ROOT as describe in http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-install-clockworkmod-recovery-on-samsung-galaxy-s-i9000 (the clearest guide I found so far)
flash CWR (or is it not necessary with CF-ROOT)
do a nandroid backup
save preciously the backup and the previously backed up kernel
play with the new toys .....
when warranty is needed:
restore the nandroid backed-up ROM
revert to original kernel with sgs kernel flasher
unroot with oneclick
can someone with experience revue this list and tells us if it sound correct ?
thanks

I went a bit further, following my own post just above :
my phone is already rooted and has ROM MANAGER installed
I used the first option of ROM manager and flash the last CWR. that has created a update.zip on my sdcard, but I cannot use it as I am still on recoveryv3
I backed up my kernel using "sgs kernel flash" (found on market)
I flashed a new kernel : CF-Root-XW_XEN_JS5-v1.3-BusyBox-1.17.1.zip. this is because my phone build is build FROYO.BOJS5 (noticed the 2 JS5)
rebooted the phone, I open ROM Manager and went to "reboot into recovery"
there I was on recoveryv2, with very little options but I "apply update.zip" twice (first one failed)
I rebooted and suddenly I had access to the new flashed recovery, CWR with backup options
I did a nandroid backup
one trick, the OK button became the right most button, and not the center one anymore
one think left to do, revert to stock samsung with recovery v3. to test the complete process
another trick, the CF-ROOT kernel came package into a zip files and when trying to flash it with sgs kernel flash it fails. you need to unzip the file first, it will gives you a .tar file, this one can be flash successfully
so all together, we can flash a new kernel all from the phone, without ODIN and without a PC (windows, Linux or other)

You and me are in exactly the same situation. To do nandroid backup for warranty reason we have to brake that same warranty.
Only I didnt use cf-root, I went for hardcore speedmod...
1. Place the superuser.zip file attached at the end of the post on your sd card.
2. Flash recovery in bootloader with "fastboot flash recovery <filename>.img". I recommend CWM 5.0.2.3 found in this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=988686&highlight=recovery
3. Go to recovery, in "mounts and storage" select "mount system" and then flash su-install.zip (EDIT : Mounting system not necessary, the script does it automatically while flashing the zip, but just in case)
4. Fix Permissions and reboot system.
5. Use any root explorer (i recommend ROM Toolbox, free in market) and go to /etc and either rename "installrecovery.sh" to "installrecovery.sh.old" or just delete it (its not needed).
6. There it is - Rooted ICS with a recovery that sticks.
EDIT -- IF, by any chance, after following the above steps, you find that you're stuck without a recovery (android exclamation screen), just flash a recovery via fastboot and you'll be fine. This time the recovery WILL stick. I think its something to do with the su-install.zip. I dont know for sure because I found it off the internet, its not mine.
Also, I did the superuser market update and I DID NOT lose root. I have an I9020T. So others with the same can safely update, imo.
Thanks to ab.grafix for being a part of the team.
IMPORTANT -- The su-install.zip posted previously is NOT mine. I didnt know who made it but just found out. All credit to dzo binary and Chamb'. I just made a guide coz it worked for me and I thought it might help others too.
Tested on I9020T and I9023
Don't forget to click on that thanks button if this helped.
UPDATE -- Superuser was updated by ChainsDD to support ICS 4.0.3. Thank you ChainsDD! Updated zip is now attached.
So now that we have root we need a overclocked kernel...
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
works great but very old cwm
Worked as described. Thanks !
Old cwm? Wich version? Is it possible to flash the latest one with rom manager?
So I am on ICS alpha13.
I9023
- wipe everything and Flash Android 2.3.6/GRK39F/XXKF1 Radio/KA3 Bootloader via clockworkmod
- Reboot in stock recovery and flash stock ICS
- Boot in ICS enable debug mode
- Run the bat follow instruction?
Is it ok?
Thanks
Hi will it work on the rogers i9023a? Can someone tell me which stock ICS to flash?
Thanks
Thanks, it worked and nothing was wiped since I was already unlocked. With apps that require root you no longer get asked for root permission nor do they show in app list in superuser but it seems to have root for now
For the guys using linux (like me ) , just download the archive in the first post , retrieve from there 2 files: root.zip and recovery.img and use them with your current ADB setup.
HOW-TO:
Prerequisites: you have installed Android SDK, fastboot and you have set-up correctly the udev (ubuntu).
1. Place the above mentioned 2 files in the working directory
2. reboot in bootloader mode (vol-up + power)
3. connect USB cable
4. run "./fastboot-linux-i386 flash recovery recovery.img"
5. reboot bootloader
6. reboot recovery
7. mounts and storage -> usb mass storage
8. copy root.zip in the phone storage
9. go back -> install zip from sd card -> root.zip
DONE !
I just tested and is working fine.
If there are newbies out there trying to understand the nonsense I wrote, try following the rooting guide for Gingerbread and just use the 2 files I mentioned in this post instead of the ones in the archive for gingerbread.
when in BL i dont have Unlock option :|
Thanks for your effort.
But I'm curious about the flashable zip file.
What's the difference of the zip file between the orignal superuser ?
And did the recovery do some magic which CWM can't do?
After reading the script , I just see the zip is important ,maybe the recovery is doing some magic too.
I'll just flash the zip and see what happen.

In fact, you can use any recovery image you want, including the latest clockwork for example. I used TWRP to do this and it worked just fine. On linux, just flashed root.zip.
I've done it, thanks a lot. I've also replaced the recovery.img file with the last cmw and all went well.
Now the rom doesn't show the root permission request toast but it works however.
I'd ask if its possible to manually update the superuser.apk or its better to mantain this one?

EDIT: it worked, thanks!
thanks, working here on 9023. warning for other users - do not update superuser from the app itself, or it'll stop working. at least it did for me, when i updated it to 3.0.3
confirmed working I9020a...

How to root Lenovo TAB A7-40 A3500-FL?
[Solved] See the guide below!
Device info:
Model number: Lenovo A3500-FL
Android version: 4.4.2
Kernel version: 3.4.67
Build number: A3500FL_A442_01_25_140823_SE
BB Chip: MT6582
MS Board. A3500FL
Bar code: this was my device's serial number
SW Ver.: ALPS.KK1.MP1.V2.10
Custom Build Verno.: 1408775889
Managed to get cwm and root with this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/and...vo-a3500-h-t2879208/post55491817#post55491817
Modified the guide for Lenovo A3500-FL!
EDIT: Also some users have reported that this guide doesn't do the trick or is out-dated, so copypasted the guide from this post here.
Guide
1. Download attachment cwmRecovery.zip and download latest Flash_tool (version 5.1352.0) can be downloaded from here)
1.1. Enable USB-debugging. (How to do this)
2. Manually install the drivers from the attachment a7_40_drivers.zip for the LenovoTablet before plugin it to computer (win7 dirvers work for win8 too).
2.1. To install unsigned/uncertified drivers on Windows 7: http://en.kioskea.net/faq/3914-windows-7-how-to-install-unsigned-drivers
2.2. To install unsigned/uncertified drivers on Windows 8: http://www.howtogeek.com/167723/how...8.1-so-that-you-can-install-unsigned-drivers/
2.3. After you have disabled the driver signature verification, you can install the drivers like this: Right click My computer, Manage, Device Manager, right click your computer at the top, Add Legacy hardware, next, Install plapla manually, next, Show all Devices, Have a Disk.., Browse to the driver folder where you unzip them, choose example windows7 and the 64 version (win7 drivers work for win8.x too), install every device. Then follow the guide.
(Note: Otherwise Windows only installs the normal automatic drivers and its more difficult to install the other drivers.)
2.4. Plug your device to PC.
3. Download the latest supersu zip file (version 2.46) from attachments or from https://download.chainfire.eu/696/SuperSU/
3.1. Move the zip.-file to the Sdcard.
4. Turn off your device.
5. Unpack cwmRecovery.zip
6. Run Flash_tool.exe with Admin Rights.
7. Chose Scatter-Loading and choose MT6582_Android_scatter.txt (in Recovery folder).
7.1. Now you will see checekd only one checkbox - recovery, if not click on it and choose recovery.img
7.2. Press Download.
7.3. Connect your device.
7.4. Wait few seconds.
8. Have CWM on your device .
9. Unplug your device.
10. . Boot to cmw recovery by turning off your device. Then press and hold VOL DOWN + VOL UP and then also press and hold POWER for about 7 seconds.
10.1. Choose " Install zip from sdcard." (To confrim always use the Power Button)
10.2. Choose "zip from sdcard".
10.3. Select SuperSU-v2.46.zip from sdcard and apply.
10.4. Have a rooted tablet.
It might be necessary to always flash the CWM with the Flashtool directly before you startup the device. Otherwise it will start the original AndroidRecovery again.
It might also be necessary to use different drivers from here.
If the supersu zip doesn't install, try toggling the signature verification to disabled from cwm->install zip from sdcard->toggle signature verification.
Tested and working on Levono A7-40 3500-FL with kitkat update, build number A3500FL_A442_01_25_140823_SE, from ota. Attached screenshot for proof. Also other people have reported that this works for later updates too, for example A3500FL_A442_01_27_141127_SE.
You can update to the latest OTA firmware by first going back to stock recovery. See the second post for the guide.
Thanks and credits go to: @Koli96 and @bobais
How to go back to stock rom/recovery and update to latest Lenovo OTA firmware update
So, it's pretty simple, you take the stock_recovery.zip from the first post, extract it, and replace recovery.img in the recovery folder with the stock one.
Then :
Quote:
4. Turn off your device.
6. Run Flash_tool.exe with Admin Rights
7. Chose Scatter-Loading and choose MT6582_Android_scatter.txt (in Recovery folder)
7.1. Now you will see checekd only one checkbox - recovery, if not click on it and choose recovery.img
7.2.. Press Download
7.3. Connect your device
7.4. Wait few seconds.
And that's it !
On a side note, if it seems stuck on a black screen with a loading circle after factory reset, you have to put the tablet in landscape mode and restart (the shutdown menu appears without any problem) - this issue doesn't seem related to recovery, but a bug within lenovo firmware and the first configuration screen.
Side note 2: The first boot after flashing new update might take 15mins.
Side note 3: After updating to the latest OTA you can go back to cwm recovery with the guide from the first post.

Well it charges long and the charge stays long, so no issue here.
Seems that not that many lenovos root easily, but of course this is a pretty new device(?).

Installed everything and tried vroot once again (I have tried it before).
Still not rooted. And btw that vroot at least tries to install bunch of bloatware crap on the pc.
Edit:
I would suggest for anyone who installed Vroot to your pc to scan the whole pc after you uninstall the vroot.
Here are the scanning tools:
Malwarebytes
adwcleaner
superantispyware
hitmanpro

I got a successful root by flashing Recovery.rar from lenovo-forums.ru, (it's easy to google, I'm not allowed to post links) with the included SPFlash Tool and afterwards flashing the needed SU binaryies and apk. However, this will mess up the OTA updates, and I can't find the stock recovery again.
Therefore, I really beg anyone having the stock recovery to post it, enabling us to switch between them, whenever we want to apply any OTAs.
Thanks a lot!

Well I very highly doubt that there will be any more updates for a device with this price range. And since the next android version is the L version, which requires more work than before.

Rooting..
Yes indeed, that's what I'm trying to do. Rooting the A3500-FL. According to the instructions you need to install the SuperSU from a zip on your SD card. When I try do that it gets interrupted every time. Installing recovery went well. So I'm not getting what I do wrong? Any ideas?

Yup.. This is the problem. The recovery runs fine from Flash Tool and claims it installs it. (Download ok) But I still don't seem to have CWM on the device. It's just normal recovery mode. So any ideas about the CWM-installation? What could possibly go wrong? I get no error messages. Cheers.

Yup.. This is the problem. The recovery runs fine from Flash Tool and claims it installs it. (Download ok) But I still don't seem to have CWM on the device. It's just normal recovery mode. So any ideas about the CWM-installation? What could possibly go wrong? I get no error messages. Cheers.

Same for me, what about this @leripe ?
EDIT// Oh, It's working now, tried to flash it one more time, then I held a power button until Lenovo logo appeared and then I pressed Vol UP and Vol DOWN and the CWM came in, thank you! Now my tablet is finally rooted
With the latest firmwares not directly rootable you need to download or create an update package with root and recovery and update your system via recovery. This won't delete your data and root will be there on 5.x.x. I made this complete tutorial so that everyone can make an update from an FTF file.
THIS IS FOR LOCKED BOOTLOADER and/or STOCK KERNEL ONLY !!!
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A BACKUP !!!
1.1 You need obviously an already rooted phone with [NUT]'s DualRecovery installed and working (this can be achieved on firmwares with Android 4.4 and 5.0.2)
If you don't have the recovery, you can install it from here: [Z2][TWRP][PhilZ Touch][CWM] XZDualRecovery Q&A see post #2 there for instructions. 2.8.12 and later should work on KitKat and Lollipop too!
1.2 You need Flashtool with working USB drivers (Make sure flashmode works - which means the drivers are properly installed on your system, especially on Windows 8/8.1/10 - before you start this tutorial).
2. Download the newest FTF update file for your phone/branding. Use the same customization version (xxxx-xxxx) that is on your phone now!
This you can do with Flashtool (Devices/Check Updates menu) or download it from the [FTF] STOCK FIRMWARES for Xperia Z2 thread.
(Alternative option for advanced users: XperiFirm -> you can create an FTF from the downloaded firmware files with Flashtool.)
3.1 Download PRFCreator v1.1.zip from [TOOL] PRFCreator - easily create pre-rooted firmwares.
3.2 Download latest stable SuperSU update package from here.
3.3 Download XZDualRecovery's latest - 2.8.23 - flashable version (Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.xx-RELEASE.combined.zip) from here (XZDualRecovery section).
You will have 5 files so far:
PRFCreator v0.5.zip
D650x_23.x.1.A.x.xxx.ftf (with different name and firmware version number)
UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip
Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.x-RELEASE.flashable.zip
Click to collapse
4. Unzip PRFCreator and run it.
5. Load the FTF, SuperSU and Z2-lockeddualrecovery (flashable) zip files into the three section.
6. Uncheck all the Include options [ ], we don't need them, we will flash them with Flashtool after the update. I think it's still safer to flash kernel, baseband, boot and other system critical parts of the firmware from Flashtool.
(But if you want to include them anyway then you can skip part 11 and start your phone normally.)
There is a Legacy mode option in the latest version. Without it PRFCreator will use a direct sin flashing method for system update. If you check the legacy option it will use the older repack method for system. The direct sin flashing should work in most cases if not then use the legacy option.
7. Push Create. After it's finished (wait for the Create button to be available again), you'll find a flashable.zip in the folder of PRFCreator.
Check the contents of the zip file, it should look like this with PRFCreator v0.5:
Code:
data
META-INF
system
utils
partition-image.sin
system.sin
dualrecovery.zip
SuperSU.zip
If something is missing, redo the process from step #4 until all is there.
8. Copy flashable.zip to the internal/external SD card of your phone. If you want to go for 100% working root and recovery copy UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.46.zip and Z2-lockeddualrecovery2.8.x-RELEASE.flashable.zip there too.
9. Boot your phone into recovery (use TWRP!).
10. Install flashable.zip in recovery. After finished DO NOT REBOOT !!!
*Optional step: install SuperSU and Recovery again so if something went wrong during the system flashing you'll still have a working recovery.
Clear Cache/Dalvik only and go back to Home and choose Reboot/Power off.
11. Start Flashtool and with the Flash device icon flash the kernel and other baseband files from the FTF in Flashmode.
Use the following configuration (or similar):
Wipe:
Code:
[ ] APPSLOG
[ ] CACHE
[ ] DATA
Which means nothing is wiped, this is good for a system update only, that reserves your settings, applications and data. (If you want a clean system or run into errors after updating only the system, you can wipe all the three.)
Exclude:
Code:
[ ] BOOTBUNDLE
[x] PARTITION
[ ] KERNEL
[ ] FOTA
[ ] BASEBAND
[x] SYSTEM
[ ] ELABEL
Which means system, partition and ta options are unchanged and won't be wiped/overwritten. You can exclude fota, elabel and baseband too, but some phone functions may be limited. Always use your phone's original customization version when choosing FTFs. Never exclude = never check (x) kernel. It is the main reason we're flashing this.
TA -> not always present in the FTF file, but if you see it, then EXCLUDE it, just to be sure, you don't simlock your device
Code:
[x] No final verification
[ ] Reset customization
Connect the micro USB to your phone and get ready with the other end of the cable in your hand
Push Flash button.
Push the Volume down button and connect the USB cable to the computer's USB port. Wait until Flashtool begins with the flashing and you can release the Volume button now.
When finished, unplug the the phone, start it and wait until it completes the first boot. After it is fully working, check SuperSU and if you can mount system R/W too (in Root Explorer or in other root file manager).
ENJOY another rooted version of Android I can give support only for this process, for the tools you need to ask your questions in the appropriate threads above.
Thanks to @zxz0O0 for creating the PRFCreator and the Lollipop fixes, it makes things easier in this process (you don't need to mess with linux mounts, virtual machines and other scripts copying system images and recovery updates to a zip).
hi
I look forward to your work to install on my z2
:good:
Nice guide. Please let me know the bugs in PRFCreator v0.6 (you can drop me a pm as I don't have a lot of time for xda at the moment). Also, is step 12 really necessary? Dualrecovery should already be included in the flashable zip (same for step 11 if you include those files).
Will downgrading 4.4.4 to 4.4.2 without wiping data cause a bootloop?

I didn't use the v0.6 because more people complained in the tool's thread about it. V0.5 is working, I can test v0.6 later (maybe tomorrow).
Dualrecovery is included with the flashable.zip but the RIC killer isn't working in that version, it needs to be installed again with the PC installer. Maybe someone (I mean @[NUT] ) could clean up the process
Thx! This is really useful for noobs like me!
Hi zxz0O0, the updater script is looking for 3 files in /utils but when the zip is created on 0.6 those files remain in the root of the zip so you get error when flashing. i think that's the problem with 0.6 but i can be wrong as i didn't test it

It may be an alternative for Step 12 to modify the flashable dualrecovery .zip file as the post of the link above, I think.

I don't want to change [NUT]'s recovery installers (everyone can edit scripts if wants), this may be a longer process but more user friendly.

It will reset your phone to factory state after flashing the firmware. If you want a clean update (here we don't) only then you should use this option.

Flash a previous ftf (not 4.4.4), root it, install recovery and restore your backup.
Did you got any errors during the process?

During the flashing of the ZIP (before FTF), there was something that failed (set_perm) but it still said SUCCESSFUL... But I want a clean update. Can I clean DATA at least?

Of course, I'll put this in the OP as an option.
@norti, I tried EVERYTHING again. This does NOT work. Bootloop...
When flashing the Zip, I get an error with the set_perm:
Please link a pre-rooted ROM which has NOT been de-odexed or de-bloated...
PS: After selecting to turn off the phone, it tells me "the phone does not seem to be rooted. Do I want to root" Do I need to select to root it?
---------- Post added at 11:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 11:18 PM ----------
I get the following when flashing the FTF as-is:
08/025/2014 23:25:54 - ERROR - Processing of system.sin finished with errors.
08/025/2014 23:25:54 - INFO - Ending flash session
08/025/2014 23:25:54 - ERROR - ERR_SEVERITY="MINOR";ERR_CODE="0017";ERR_DYNAMIC="8009001C";
now where is that "Thanks" button located.....
Succeeded!!! But I can't make system R/W, though I do as Step 12... Any ideas?
Can someone please link me a good FTF?
