I bought the Nexus One last February, with a two year Tmobile account.
I attended the Google I/O conference last week, and Google was kind enough to give me a Sprint HTC EVO 4G! The EVO comes with one month of free unlimited calls and unlimited data. On June 20th I must get a paid sprint account if I want to keep using the phone.
I live in Phoenix, AZ.
Now I have to decide which one I want to use as my primary cell-phone. If you were me, which would you use as your main cell-phone, and why? The Nexus One or the EVO 4G?

You'll be paying $350 I believe if you cancel your T-Mobile contract, so that's probably not a good idea.
*AND*
You can sell your Evo now on Ebay for $1200.
The logistics of the situation (regardless of the phone comparisons) make it a pretty easy decision imo
evo is superior hardware but u are at the mercy of sprint for OS updates (they said froyo wouldnt be available till after 2nd quarter of 2010 at the earliest). the nexus ones main advantage over any other phone (including other android phones) is that it is not tied to any carrier and gets updates first.
the main advantage that the evo has is the 4g which is not available in most areas... also, from my tests, tmobiles 3g+ hspa is about on par with 4g wimax in speed (i have clear's 4g wimax service on my laptop.. so alot of 4g's speed advantage is negated by early tech and low coverage and its a HUGE battery killer (my netbook goes from 8hrs battery life to 4hrs battery life left when i turn on 4g)
so personally i would keep my nexus but yeah the evo still has the better hardware.... so if u want the better hardware and dont care too much about early 4g coverage and dont need android updates asap the evo would be better
Evo has a sweet package of hardware, nice camera, HDMI out, 4g WiMax (if it is available in your area) and a larger screen.
But, Nexus one is going to get the 2.2 Froyo first and it might be months for it to be available on Evo, if you are not rooting it.
I would say use Nexus One until you get FroYo on Evo.
PS: Until Nexus One gets GingerBread

I opened the packaging for the EVO 4G, and I have been using the phone for the past few days. Also, there are quite a few attendants of the Google IO conference who are also trying to sell their EVO 4G. It is no longer selling for $1200 on ebay. Not even close.

On Saturday I installed Froyo on my Nexus One. Very nice OS upgrade.

Even still, if you switch from T-Mobile to Sprint:
A) Pay an ETF to close the T-Mobile account.
B) You keep both lines open and pay $50-$80 times TWO per month.
I'd probably choose the Evo, but it just doesn't make sense with your contract.

Definitely dump the Evo for $1200 (or what the market will bear)
Use part of that cash to buy out of the T-mo contract
Now free to sign a new contract - or not - or buy an Evo outright once it's commonly available, with money left in your pocket.
For the record, N1 will get my vote over any other phone on the market.
Why? Who else has Froyo working today?

You can sell the evo and make up for the etf and sign up with sprint for another evo and probably make a few bucks out of it
I'd get the Nexus One. Early reviews of the EVO have it being slower than the incredible with the same processor. I guess the time to render images on a screen that size slows things down.
Plus the nexus will always get updates first, and I prefer the stock UI over Sense.
Also, the HD2 and EVO are just too big in my opinion. The Nexus one has a perfect feel for a phone in my hand.
EVO its already rooted and theres a bunch of great devs who are getting it so you should see froyo on there in no time
Ill keep the nexus one and wait for the next "Google phone"
I would take evo except I don't like sprint coverage.
Honestly, I think the EVO is just too big. And I have pretty big hands. I can fit it in my hand alright, but it's just a little uncomfortable, I feel like I really have to gorilla grip it if I want to make sure I've got a good hold. The nexus is the perfect width, and fits in my hand the way I expect a phone to.
Don't get me wrong, the screen on the EVO is great and wonderful and everything, but I don't know if it's worth being over encumbered.
Just my 2 cents.
I would use the nexus as the primary phone. It's perfect build quality materials and such a classy device with metal build and teflon coating. The hardware is very similar, same CPU, RAM, screen resolution, etc. I'd keep the nexus and sell the evo if given the choice. Or use evo as a web tablet.

moneywise, this is the best choice. I also think the Evo 4G is waaaay too big for my needs. I am extremely happy with my nexus one on tmobile. And the first-in-line for the next couple updates is also a major perk for me.
On the other hand, 3G coverage is a lot better for sprint compared to tmobile. if you are at all worried about coverage, and you dont live in a decently sized city, that may be the clincher.
As for me, im in Kansas City, and we're getting 4G this summer (supposedly) and i would have definitely stuck with sprint had the Evo 4G not been a huge ass monster of a device (literal size-wise).
If you care about saving money: Go with the N1 (I pay $34/mo for data and voice compared to a whopping $80 minimum you would pay with the Evo)
If money isn't an issue: Go with the Evo

i do the same.tzones plan with texting and voice (1000 mins) for around 40 a month including tax.
So I am sure a lot of us Incredible owners have fresh 2 year Verizon contracts. When I signed up they told me I had 30 days to decide if I wanted to keep it.
I LOVE my Incredible, but now the EVO is coming out just before my 30 day window to switch. It is basically the same exact phone with a larger screen and I am very tempted.
Is anyone else in the same boat? And if so what made you decide one way or the other.
I will add a view points I am considering.
EVO +
Sprint will cost about $10 less a month vs Verizon
Larger Screen
LCD screens do not get burn in. I am reading that AMOLEDs do, a lot of nexus one users are reporting it.
Already Rooted
Option to disable SenseUI
Sharper looking text
Front camera
Incredible +
Better network coverage
Smaller in pocket
Screen has better colors
Optical pad(EVO has no optical pad or trackball)
Smoother video recording
Possibly better battery life?!
The fact that I'd have to pay 350 to cancel my contract, then buy the phone through Sprint and start a new contract and loose my 5-6 years of service I've had through Alltel/Verizon.
It's not worth it IMO to cancel and then pay to get the phone. If my contract was over however, I would have considered going to Sprint and getting the Evo. But in actuality to get the equivalent plan that I have on Verizon, it would cost alot more if I pay for the 4G...and IMO if you get that phone, and don't pay for 4G, it's a waste (unless you truly don't use apps or web).
Edit: But in the end it comes down to what you truly want.
You can't get the Evo, without paying the 4G extra $10
You can cancel your contract within the first 30 days. Without penalty. Maybe a restocking fee at most.
Verizon:
450min & Unlim txt $59.99
Unlim data $30
Total: $90+tax&fees
Sprint EVO plan.
450min & Unlim txt & data $69.99
EVO $10
Total: $80+tax&fees

You forgot to put under the Evo, limited 3G
If Sprint had any reception where I live, I'd do it. Seems like it'd be a fun phone to get and not a bad price point either.
My opinion, for what it is worth
I would not do it simply because when we (VZW) starts deploying LTE with 100mbps 4g and passes Sprint's slower WiMAX deployment, HTC will have an even cooler and faster unit (I know this because I have seen a proto of it that was here at corperate a few days ago, just a plastic model with no name yet but it looks cooooooool, salesmen) you will be kicking yourself for having to flop back to get the new one. Also look at if Sprint has deployed WiMAX where you are anyway, probably not. Also coverage, what good is it if call quality suffere ????

That's a good point. I would weigh my options if I were in his position. He's gonna need to find out who provides the best coverage. I'd recommend a one year contract.
Comes down to network coverage and quality. Both are great phones. But I'll stick with Verizon. Nation wide LTE by 2013. They have the pls and the means. Not to mention the incredible is perfect for me. I don't video chat with anyone. Overall the evo isn't that much more appealing that I'd want it over the incredible. Oh almost forgot... I don't want an enormous phone.

The way I look at it, I got a heavily subsidized device and a hefty ETF.
I paid $99 (bought through Wirefly, $149 and $50 cash back from Bing). The ETF is a two year deal, prorated, at $350 from the start and working it's way down.
If I want out halfway through, I have to pay Verizon $175. Add $99 to that, and the cost of the phone to me is $274. Chances are I can sell the phone for close to that to another Verizon subscriber.
I'm playing wait and see for a year - if Sprint's 4G is for real and can hold up to the network traffic, I'll bite. If not, I'm safe.
I wouldn't be so sure your ETF works that way. I know AT&T was $5 a month prorated. So if you went 23 months and canceled your original $180 etf would cost you $65. I know that is how mine worked last month when I paid $90 after 18 months.
I'm willing to change phone like underwear for the right device and I have decided to hold off for now. Some of the biggest factors currently are
- no 4g in my area anyways
- nobody else I know has the front mounted cam for video calls
- size
I had the HD2 for a little over a week and let me tell you, beautiful piece of hardware but its approaching being to big at 4.3". I am thinking something at 4" would be a little better. Even a 3.7" screen is fine height wise, just seems like the Incredible could be wider IMO
I have done the research, and I have been anticipating the release of some sexy android phones on my current AT&Crap Service, and am at the point of pissed off because the lack of android selection, and their restrictive android behavior.
Now, I obviously know the EVO is a better phone, here is my question. Is it worth paying the $85 Termination Fee's on my Fuze, and jumping ship to the Everything Data- 450minutes Plan $69.99 (can get company discount to make it $55.99).
Are you guys happy with your Sprint Converage, and 3G speeds? (I will be using this phone majority in 3G area (buffalo) for the next year, and then will be in Long Island (hopefully getting 4G from NYC in the next 4 months).
Does anyone have Sprint in Long Island/Buffalo, can you gimme some opinions.
Thanks again.

I am on the other side of the country, so can't speak to the Sprint service there, but I am paying $140 to terminate my iPhone plan early to get the Evo. I already switched the rest of the family to Sprint from AT&T and when I have switched on Friday I will save almost $100 monthly. I sold my 3GS last week for $400 so the cost of the Evo and my ETF are covered.
Why are you interested in EVO? Screen size? Or front facing camera?
Have you looked at HTC Incredible (Sense UI) or Nexus One (stock Android UI - soon to have Android 2.2)?
I looked at the Incredible very closely when it was released and almost pulled the trigger. Two things stopped me...the cost of the Verizon plans and the fact that if I didn't like it I would have to pay a restocking fee for the phone. Sprint's 30 day policy is totally cost free if you decide to cancel. The Nexus One would keep me at AT&T or off to T-Mobile and I don't care for the T-Mobile service.

I'm in the same boat, the Cost of the Verizon plan is approximately $20 more with less features.
Now you reminded me about the Nexus One ATT Compatible Version, however it can not be purchased without a discounted price.
So now i have to weight my options of, switch to Sprint, be on a separate plan from my family (cause my Mom and Brother are Not technologically sound and have a 3GS and 3G Respectively). Which will be $199.99 for the EVO and $55.99 +Fee and Taxes a month.
Or i could purchase an unbranded ATT Compatible Version of the nexus one for $529.00 ......

Yea, I read that earlier, However I currently have the $30 unlimited plan, so if i stay with AT&T I would just keep that. No point in saving $5 for the chance of going over, especially if i get the nexus one, there would be endless downloading from my end.
I'm paying a $70 ETF to leave AT&T for the Evo. I also have a Fuze, and it's seen it's better days. I doubt it'll even last till my contract is up. So I could pay full price for one of AT&T's crappy phones, or I can pay the ETF and get the Evo. It was an easy decision for me..

$500? Must have been a 32GB unlocked one? Good on ya either way because it will be close to cost neutral!
to the OP... dont forget the added $10/month fee for EVO/Premium data charge.
I dont know about the coverage and quality of service in the areas you asked about... but it cant be any worse than AT&T.
then add on the new pricing plans for data... which dont apply to you NOW.. but I think they will find a way to pop you; if not now.. soon in the not to far future!
30-day guarantee
Sell your fuze for a few bucks on craiglist.
The gravy on top of all this.. is that you get an EVO / android.. without the service provider killing all the good things on it!

i'm thinking about paying the ETF on 3 of 4 lines on family shared (mine is contract free since i never got upgrade phone with them); total cost will be $340 (that's what the rep told me yesterday) to terminate the 3 lines; probably can sell Iphone 3GS for about $400 and my N1 for $300-350 so that can cover most of the cost
also, i'll get 23% discount with Sprint for all recurring monthly charges
Edit: will need to unlock the Iphone first since unlocked ones sell for more (although the Ebay/Paypal fees will take a good chunk of it)

I've been playing with EVO for few days and have mixed feelings about it. I normally use Nexus One (T-Mobile's coverage is working ok for me in the Bay Area), so I'm comparing EVO with Nexus One.
Good:
- front facing camera
- kick stand. You'll be amazed how convenient it is. Everything: typing, browsing, watching videos, video calling is much easier with the stand.
- buttons are significantly better than on Nexus.
Bad:
- screen size and overall phone size. I'm not convinced about 4.3 inch screen running at 480x800 resolution. I think if Android starts supporting higher resolutions, it may make 4.3 inch screen worth it.
But for now, I think 480x800 looks good enough on 3.7 inch screen. Of course, EVO's screen is beautiful (and is much brighter in the daylight than Incredible or Nexus), but for me EVO would be too large of a device to carry around all the time (e.g. pocket is out - need to have a belt clip).
- Sense UI. I prefer stock Android UI both for the cleaner (although admittedly simpler) look and for the speed of the OS updates.

So you think the Nexus One is a Better Option.
I am switching from Verizon to Sprint (Currently have the HTC Titan) you just can't beat their prices, especially since we are on a 5 person family plan. And now my wife is able to have a smart phone (She got the Palm Pixi) for less than Verizon was charging us us for only one smart phone.
Here in L.A. coverage is great, and a buddy of mine did a speed comparison side-by-side with is iPhone 3G and Sprint was notably faster. Can't speak to other areas, but uh, hey, there's a map for that. LOL!

I think they are comparable and it just depends on how you use the phone (and of course network). I don’t like my phones to be bulky and heavy, so I personally wouldn’t trade Nexus One for EVO even if anybody offered that to me. I also have no problems with T-mobile, unless I get to the rural areas, but that of course depends on your area.
For me Nexus One wins because of the stock UI (my Nexus already runs test version of Android 2.2 which I installed manually and it will have an official 2.2 in few weeks) and smaller size/weight (yet same resolution as EVO).
EVO obviously has better cameras, better screen (Nexus’s screen looks poorly under sunlight), but Sense UI + EVO’s size/weight are showstoppers for me. I don’t want HTC bugs on top of the Android OS (for example, I’ve never seen the sd card permissions errors on either Nexus or G1 while using camera app, but have seen it on EVO) and I don’t want to wait extra 6 months or more for the Android updates.
Its seems that the fine folks at phandroid have stumbled across this little nugget of info tucked neatly away in the fine print of the Samsung Vibrant's shop page.

If u do the math that equates to $330. I hope T-Mobile plays it smart and doesn't change the price before launch, because I definitely assumed the off contract price would be $450-$550
In any event, there also seems to be a "REAL" screen cap of the actual price tag on the page before TMO decided to remove it. Here's the link to that also...

Jesus Christ. Do you seriously think that the Nexus One retails for $529 but THIS phone - which is better in every.single.way is going to retail for $330?
That's quite literally one of the stupidest things I think i've read in a long, long time.
Personally, Im pretty sure the phone is going to cost $500+ because the on contract price vs. this supposed on contract price doesn't make sense and this also bucks the trend of previous costs associated with phones of this level.
However, it would be a nice (and courageous) move on TMO's part with this slightly, in comparison, paired down galaxy s model to move units.
Anyway, I thought I would share this sliver of hope with the TMO faithful lol.
This just reminds me of the entire "Project Dark" / EM+ debacle where some blogs reported errors/rumors as facts of an upcoming program. So when EM+ came out, the news wasn't that TMO cut their pricing, it was that they didn't live up to the hype that some bloggers posted about false pricing info.
Same damn thing now. People ARE going to be disappointed if they think that in any reality (normal or alternate) TMO is going to sell this phone for $330 without a contract to recoup the cost of the device.
also, this phone is a $750 phone unlocked:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-list...w?ie=UTF8&qid=1277908710&sr=8-1&condition=new
If you look at the T-mobile site now it says "125 down, with 3 monthly payments of 125" thus making the phone in the $500 range
as you said, that price has been pulled down, and curently at the bottom of the page is of the info screen (when you go to their web and shop for phones, and then for samsung phones) it shows:
"†On approved credit. $125 down payment, plus 3 monthly payments of $125, required. 0% APR. Taxes & fees additional. Available only at T-Mobile-owned retail stores; see store for details...."
others have reported off contract pricing at $439 / $439 and some at $499
we'll see this week
I was told by tmo to call on tuesday to find out the pricing of the phone

The Nexus One is made out of much much better materials, The vibrant feels cheap in the hand and the body looks cheap, the only thing on the Vibrant that looks better is the screen.
The Vibrant has no FLASH, How some one could make a High end Android phone without a flash is beyond me, but oh well.

looks like someones a little insecure
siberslug you mad?
Mad, No, I come off as mad ?
I'm just saying it's not better in every way, overall I think it's better in terms of hardware like the GPU, Screen and it's file sharing capabilities.
I would agree with him if the Vibrant was built from better material and had a flash, hell I would call it a Droid and EVO killer if it had a front facing camera in addition to the flash and better material but there is too much missing to call it that.
I just bought this to hold me over until project Emerald comes out in November

LOL
You got me.
I like big Bad @$$ things to compensate for my short comings lol
A bit disappointed but no not insecure. I will still rub this phone into all the Iphone fanboys faces and be proud to do so !! even though I don't have a flash or front facing camera or an exquisite finish that I could roll around naked on
In the case of the Pixel 3a, it is basically the Return Of Nexus - remember the Nexus 5 and even Nexus 6? The Pixel 3a has been showing up with some jaw-dropping price tags - as low as (don't faint) $299 unlocked/no carrier. (That is a price I saw with my own eyeballs.) This is pricing I have not seen as of late without substantial compromises. While the 3a has compromises, they aren't the ones you would expect.. While it doesn't support wireless charging, it *does* support fingerprint unlocking (coming from the S7 - which also supports fingerprint unlocking, this is one feature it would have hurt to lose. While it lacks wireless charging(which the S7 Snapdragon supports), it is also a feature I do not use. It still supports USB charging - though it does trade in USB A for USB C (it does include the proper cabling, though) - therefore, it's a quibble. The features it lacks are ones I didn't use - and some of the features it has (the camera, for example) are - quite bluntly - overkill. Despite the $299 price, it is nearly too MUCH phone - which I'm not used to even thinking - let alone saying - for a phone at this price aimed squarely at the US.
I ordered mine (at $399). I am betting that the $299 figure is if you are trading in a phone. I am not doing that. $399 is a good price point. I would have paid another $50 if they had decided to make the battery removable. I should be getting my phone tomorrow. Hopefully the rootz start soon!
Our family is getting two, basically for free, from T-Mobile, for my daughters, and I'll probably be getting an aXL for myself.
Excellent replacement for an ageing OG Pixel and a quirky as heck and frustrating S8., and the aXL will make an excellent backup device for me.
This phone makes a heck-of-a-lot of sense to me. First, average consumers will have access to a better camera than the iPhone at roughly half the price. For too long, I avoid recommending Android to eager iPhone users because most Android cameras suck on mainstream phones.
Second, I don't think wireless charging is deal breaker for most (and it's not for me). I'd much rather have quick charge than slow wireless charging.
Finally, the CPU is a Snapdragon 6xx, but I don't think the average user would notice one bit. Maybe here on XDA, we can quibble over the benefits of one CPU vs the next, but for average daily use, I don't think anyone will notice (except that the battery will last longer)
I think the price at $400 for possibly the best camera on the market with a nice big notch-free screen, USB-C, good battery life and timely Android updates could be a big reason this sells well (if they actually market it)
I think this is going to be my Moto G5+ replacement. I'm tiring of the subpar camera.
After regretting paying 700 for a S7 3 years ago, i'm just done paying that much for a phone. This is exactly what i'm looking for. For those that want better CPU/RAM/SD card slot, you can pay just a little more for a OnePlus 6T. I don't like that the 3a is limited to 64GB of storage with no SD, but in all honesty I don't see that as a real world issue as I rarely if ever find myself needing the extra storage I currently have.
I'm 100% confident root solutions will come quickly too.
My Droid Turbo is definitely showing it's age but Felipe's ROMs and kernel have kept it going. I'll miss wireless charging but gain a great camera. Other options include a Mix 3 which seems appealing save for MMS issues with Verizon, OnePlus 7 if I can limp along until then or hope for another Pixel 3 discount. Replacement displays and other hardware should be much less expensive for the 3a down the road than the other options.
Good news, someone on reddit just confirmed that the bootloader can be unlocked the same way as all previous Pixel phones. Let the games begin!
Why? A great camera is my #1 priority, and #2 is rootable/ROMable because I keep my phones for more than 2 years and want updates. I'm not going to pay Pixel 3 type of prices.

BTW, just saw the $299 price, it's on BestBuy if you activate the phone "today" on Sprint. $350 if you activate on Verizon or AT&T. Anyone saw trade-in deals?

I don't lend any legitimacy to prices through carriers other than Google itself. I know with Sprint, you are paying a price to LEASE the phone and then have to pay to own it at the end of that lease (usually 2 years). I would rather pay my $399 and own it outright without having to pay anything else later.
The unlocked version at Best Buy is not discounted, however, they're offering a $100 BB gift card with purchase, so I just pulled the trigger on the XL and I'll be picking it up today. I'd rather have $100 at BB than $100 at Google Play Store, which Google is offering as well.
I looked at the Google store and it looks like I will effectively be getting it for $299 since I will get a $100 fi credit after I activate the phone. Can't beat that!
Woohoo, got mine... the direct-connect data sync is pretty sweet. It's still updating my apps but this is the easiest phone transition i've ever done. Decided I won't bother with unlocking the bootloader until i'm ready to root (which I imagine won't be too long)
My daughter was begging for a new phone for her 15th birthday. She's been on iphone forever - hand me downs from her mom. I hate supporting iphones. We looked at the specs on this compared to the xr, and she agreed this one looked good - so we bought one yesterday at Best Buy. I didn't even know it came with a $100 best buy gift card, but I wanted to see it in person before buying (otherwise I'd have ordered from Google), and I'm glad I did.
I have a oneplus 6t; I'm curious to see how this phone compares. I'm so proud my kid wanted to switch to android.

The $299USD hitch is that you activate ASAP with AT&T, Verizon, or Sprint. No transfer or trade-in required. I inquired because I would be coming from Tracfone/T-Mobile - I would be whacked with the $399 (full bill) price tag (Pixel 3a in Just Black)). Still cheaper than even a Galaxy S9 or Note 9 by $200USD - an S10e by $350USD - in Prism Black in either case. Just about half the price of a Note 9 - and *less* than half the price of the floor S10e. And unlike the S10e, the Q beta is an option from the jump.

We're on the fence right now between a 6T or the 3a XL to replace a Nexus 6P--which, with it's second battery, is still working but approaching 4 yrs (purchased first week). Two months ago I bought a MOTO Z3Play to replace my Nexus 5X which had mobo replaced twice. Now (because of the possibility of wifi calling on AT&T prepaid), I wish I'd remembered this phone was coming out. Z3P doesn't have anywhere near the radio I thought MOTO would give me.
Please report back re the 6t vs 3a once you get a chance to get a feel for it. TIA.
(Proud of your kid, too! I keep an iphone SE for wifi calling as our reception on every carrier is often zero in our house.)

Not just those carriers. If you are a FI customer, google will credit you back $100 after you activate. So I am basically getting it for $299 as well.
Getting so good feedback with the 3A's. Hope it's gonna be mostly positive. Crossing my fingers.
I've got a 6T also, had the 3XL when it released but the combo of horrid notch and 1k price point sent me back to OnePlus. This price makes it all more palatable and I did like the software and camera so I'm going it another go. My tracking shows Saturday, I'll try and post after I've had a chance to flog it enough to get a feel for what's on offer.
