I downloaded the new ROM and I can't get the GPS to work at all. I wonder if my unit even has the GPS. Is there a way to find out if it does. I know the model is a PPC6800SP. I wonder if the SP stands for something.
I believe all the 6800's have the same qualcomm chip. I had trouble the first time with google maps and gps, then I walked a couple of blocks away and it was able to lock on. Try taking the phone for a short ride and see if that works.

I'm sorry to let you down but I have a PPC 6800 and Yes it have GPS and yes you may download the las ROM from sprint but if you reed well there is no GPS ON right now the page say that for the 1Q of this year they "plan" to release a new ROM to "enable the GPS" the 1Q ends on march so we only have to wait...
To me friendly I don't personally I don't think they will enable the GPS because apparently the problem is no the GPS it is the antenna that in the original design was not design to be a ''Full GPS" it was design to be an "emergency GPS" and that is a big difference from a GPS to let the 911 know were you are between to antennas... and other thing is from you to get signal from a GPS satellite they are trying to get a "non real gps to work as a real gps" via software...
At least that is what I know about it I'm still waiting for the update... too...
For you to be happy yes we have a GPS antenna no full antenna but hey it is an antenna, we have the gps windows drivers for gps inside our phone, we have the com 9 open and sending info to the gps antenna, and we have a chip capable of prepossessing all the gps technology...

Im gonna agree with UltimatePG, try it again. Make sure you are outside and can see the sky clearly (shouldnt matter but sometimes it does). also might wanna try a different app to connect. try google maps or try wififofum. my gps works on com4, might be the same or different for you, im not sure.
I would say try the Sprint Navigation App, since it is the only one that has worked for me the first time and every time. Stand outside, not near a window, not in your basement, outside.
Then wait, let it get sats, it might take a few minutes the first time but it will work.
Good luck!

This is so last year....
It turns out,after all the people talked down to people who suggested that the mogul; had full gps,after all the snide comments and flames to people who suggested that it really had it,based on the chip specs,and after all the people who told others to "STFU,the mogul "ONLY" has AGPS and will never get "REAL" gps, that the test rom that was released does in fact enable full gps functionality (as well as the coveted EVDO rev A) that so many people wanted. I am typing this,connected to the internet over a rev A connection. I tried out tom-tom navigator sunday when I drove to see my GF. Its real,its here,and it rocks.

it has GPS in it. I ended doing a search for "gpsinfo.exe download" (no quotes) on google and found a small app that displays your satelite info. Some people have reported that it can take up to 45 minutes for the phone to get a good connection. Mine took about 20 minutes before it found any satelites, now it finds them very fast. The first time takes awhile. So grab a cup of coffee and fire up either google maps or gpsinfo and stank outside for a bit.

Yes I try the new rom and iGuidance works find but google earth no and other programs seems not to work right and the ROM have many stability problems I hope when they release the final version will be more stable....
Sorry for miss informing.... but I still think people can start working in a more intelligent way like for example the ATI drivers.... and many other thing companies do not take the time to make them work find from the first time...
Why if you have a Phone capable of GPS why you just no enable it before marketing, why if we can have ATI acceleration we don't...
and let me tell you I have tested the GPS of the tilt and works much better than the mogul new ROM....

wow -- between you two messages you said two totally different things. First you said you don't have GPS and Sprint will never have it, then you say you are testing it and that you have even played with a tilt.
Strange -- I'm confused.
i read something a while back about someone who had disassembled a mogul and found it just had a dummy antenna where the gps antenna should be, i cant find a link now because google only shows all the new pages with info on the leaked update, but i suppose it could be possible there are some moguls out there with gps but no antenna
i too think its funny about all those snide people who said it only had agps. i hope they're going back to take a long look at their posts..ehheheh

I'm so sorry about all people confused... Well Yes I have tested the Pre-Release of the new upcoming ROM from Sprint.... I have a PPC 6800 (Mogul) I have tested the HTC Tilt that my friends own... The gps in the 6800 is working kind of slow in comparison to the gps of the tilt my gps is working in COM4: at 4800 bps
and the GPS in the tilt works on COM4: at 9600 bps the New rom for the 6800 have a lot of problems it have problems connecting to the internet... have stability problems, some times the Display do not turn on, some times tis freeze, some times you are in the middle of a call and you los the audio... and many other problems...
The slow speed of the GPS let me thinking about the antenna problem.... I have seen 2 different models of the Mogul I don't know if one of the other have no GPS or what...
But When I write my first post I did no see another post in wish is available the new ROM I only have the facts of the problems with the GPS and the antenna Now I'm running at
ROM 3.16.651.0
Radio version: 3.27.00
I strongly suggest for everyone to wait until Sprint release the Final version of the ROM like they say they will on March... if it happen...
Any one wish need some print screens I can e-mail them....
Thanks
Low Baud Rate
I wouldn't be too concerned with the low baud rate of the GPS.
GPS only needs to send a minimal amount of data...and 4800 bps is more than sufficient to handle the necessary data.
As far as the stability issues, the ROM being used is nowhere near a "final product". I would also attribute most of the problems to the ROM and not the GPS
As far as the lack of support for GPS from HTC, you need to remember between Sprint and HTC, there have been a lot of issues with supporting features that were built into the phone. Remember the 6600 EVDO issue?
Now, to the guy who cannot get GPS working.
Load google maps, does it say "acquiring satellites"?
It does? Good...
Now, place your phone on your car's dashboard.
Drive around for 20 minutes(hopefully away from tall buildings).
Now, pickup your phone and look at it. It should have your position.
GPS signals are VERY weak. In comparison to most other signals, the signal degradation is INSANE. However, it is much easier to keep a signal once you have acquired it. So, once you get that signal, it should be easy to keep locked
Also, after you have acquired satellites your GPS can do a much better job at 'guessing' what to look for. So when you turn it off and then turn it back on, it can guess at GPS satellite location(I am severely oversimplifying everything).
I have loaded two GPS roms. Each time, I had to drive the car around to get a signal(even after standing outside my home for 20 minutes). The car is more comfortable, easier to maneuver into an open area, and it should work within a few minutes.
I was going to take apart my sprint touch but don't have the right size torx wrench. Can anybody take some shots of the inside to show where the GPS device might possibly be.
I didn't see anything in the FCC filing so I am starting to get doubtful that GPS is included and fear it may be telenav that Sprint will use instead.
MSM7500 Chipset has the GPS chip inside of it. Go check qualcom's site, and you will see it has the GPS/REv. A radio in it. Then check your phone's chipset in teh phone's menu. There you will see it runs the MSM7500.. So yes it has GPS. THe only question is wil sprint limit its capabilties???
The GPSOne chip is integrated into the MSM7500, but if the Touch is missing the GPS antenna it could still be a no-go.

They took pictures of the inside of the Titan and said it didn't have a GPS antenna, but were wrong. Either the CDMA or the Bluetooth antenna is also the GPS antenna. I can't remember which right now.
We had this issue with the titan as well. People would suggest that it had GPS or ask if it would be activated and of course people would respond in a condescending tone telling them it didnt have it. It turns out it does and I strongly suspect that the Vogue has the same,as it is a very similar phone. In fact,I read that someone got the vogue radio rom to work on the titan. If thats the case it might work the other way and you could get GPS and Rev A now,by using the leaked titan rom. (Of course you could brick the phone as well) I dont know all the specifics,and certainly dont know that much about the vogue (I have a titan) but it might be worth checking the titan forums.

** This is a challenge for Musicman247 !! **
I never meant to imply that the Touch doesn't have GPS capability, just that it is not 100% certain yet. People did miss the GPS antenna on the Titan, but it was there. I really do hope the Touch is GPS capable, my wife has one.
JDillard and a couple others have said they are running radio 3.27 on their Touch. It doesn't appear to have done anything though. No Rev A and no GPS still. It appears there are some critical components built into the ROM that enable those funtions. Seems strange that radio 3.27 will run on the Touch without ROM 3.16. On the Titan you need both installed to even get the phone to boot.
Here's hoping for GPS and Rev A on the Touch soon!
GPSone antenna
The reason why you couldnt find the antenna inside the touch is because it is a GPSone chip, not regular GPS. It uses the cell towers to make an approximation of where you are, it is not like regular GPS as it does not communicate directly with GPS satelites (hence no need for a GPS antenna).
GpsOne uses A-GPS, which means satellites plus cell towers. This improves positioning information when satellite signal quality is poor, especially when indoors. You'll still know where you are in the middle of the Pacific; you just won't be able to make any calls.

That is why when I get a fix and go in the house it shows me going across the floor inside the house. This is with Google Maps turned on and use GPS checked and then show my location. It does work and can get a fix most times with many satellites but sometimes it just won't work so it is really iffy. I get a fix about 70% so not too bad. I am with Alltel and have the MP6900 HTC Touch and think this is the Vogue but have never found out for sure.
Why does Google Map tell me that I'm 1000m from my current location? It's useless if I need street directions.

This is strange. I have the same problem with my Rhodium. My HD2 has the best GPS I have ever owned.
I use Waze not Google maps though. Last night I was on the highest bridge of a multi road exchange and took a 90 degree turn that confuses every GPS device I have ever used but this time Waze made the turn with me.
Are you using the stock ROM?
Does Google maps support GPS?

Well...I no longer have the hd2 because it does not pick up 3G 95% of the time and it can't find a GPS satellite. Google Map supports GPS. It was also stock ROM. I must have done a million hard resets. Basically, it didn't work for $450 + $50 tax.
Did you even turn on the GPS option in Google maps? If not then it was finding your location throught GPRS which is triangulation from cell towers.
I have both a Fuze and HD2 and both work just fine for me. Also when was the last time you tried runner Quick GPS to update the tracking files?
Google Maps, by default, won't connect with GPS, but find your estimates location from cell towers. that's why you're always a little off.
press menu and use GPS, and the GPS will track your location accurately from there on.

Yes I turned on the Google GPS option. It just tries to find a tower forever, but never finds anything. I also ran Quick GPS after the Google GPS option didn't work. Similarly, I rarely ever get 3G. But, stick in my sim card to my old phone and everything is fine.
I think there is a big issue with the HD2.

Yes & no. Yes, I do when I'm on the road. But, no because I would try it at home - without any case - to see if it's accurate but it can't pick up any satellites.
I was only able to get a reading of my home position the first 2 days of owning it.

I think you mean with your particular HD2. Because as I said before, I've never had a better GPS device... ever. Any GPS device that can actually follow me on a 90-degree turn without missing a beat is just lightyears beyond anything else I've found so far.
Even with stock ROM there could be a number of things causing trouble:
You could have a bad phone. It happens. Manufacturer's defects will occur in even the best runs, that's why there are warranties to cover it.
Something may be interfering with your GPS receiver. Even if other devices perform flawlessly in the same location in your vehicle, one device may be more succeptible to radio interference than others.
You could have battery issues. A bad battery can cause all sorts of problems. When your phone can't get a good cell reception, it just boosts juice to the hardware, which in turn drains your battery faster. A bad battery just can't keep up. Again, this is why there are warranties.
Please don't just assume that the HD2 is a bad phone just because you had problems with yours. I've heard of people curse a phone maker because they got two or three bad phones in a row. The thing to remember is that when a plant makes a bad batch, the entire shift's production could easily be sent to the same area, meaning that multiple returns for the same issue from one customer are not unheard of.
I would return it and get a replacement. It may take a few times of swapping around, but you should get things worked out. Trust me, this is the best phone on the market today. Hands down.

Well...conversely, you can't assume the other direction because many, not only my phone, can't get 3G. Further, my phone can't pick up satellites even after many hard resets and no non-OEM apps installed. As I keep on reading threads, it tells me the HD2 is poor with reception. There's something to be said about this.
After selling my phone, I'm tempted to buy another one. But I'll hold out for awhile as more feedbacks come in.

The lack of 3G can't be blamed on the phone, you know. I live in the center of Austin, TX and my 3G is constant. I've driven 100 miles south to a small community there and couldn't get anything higher than Edge.
Also, T-Mobile won't kick you from a tower that doesn't belong to them. At least, I've never been able to catch them doing it. I always get the closest tower and best reception possible. Problem is, T-Mobile simply doesn't have enough money to ensure that every corner of every city has third-generation towers.
This is the same gripe coming from iPhone users; they say that AT&T just isn't investing enough in putting out more towers.

Yeah, but the thing is - as I originally mentioned - I get 3G on my BlueAngel using the same sim card. Without this test, I would not have been able to point my finger at the HD2. The BlueAngel is something like the first PDA/phone ever and I still get 3G with it. I can't believe PDA technology has not advanced so much until now that I'm still using it after all these years.

I see. Well, I certainly can't say what the problem is. As I said before, you may have just gotten a bad phone, which would suck but it does happen.
I've never dropped 3G here in Austin since I've gotten my HD2 in. Of course, the icon switches between [3] and [H] all the time, but it won't drop to [E] unless I manually turn off the "Data connection" toggle under Settings->Comm Manager.

I don't know. I was associating poor 3G reception with my phone's inability to find a satellite.

No, GPS has nothing to do with 3g or your cellular connection. The GPS will work even if you have no sim card in and don't use it as a phone.
Also, I have to say, the GPS on my HD2 is one of the best I've used. I've had 4 other GPS enabled phones, 2 handheld standalone GPS devices, and 3 different bluetooth gps devices and the HD2 is definitely as good or better than all of them. I was very impressed... never thought a phone could work so well with gps.

am i the only one ?
No GPS receiver was found maake sure you have a gps receiver (built in or bluetooth that is turned on and configured towork with google maps for mobile. ??
UMM? is this so that i can bluetooth a tomtom or something like that and use their satelites ? cuz i ran quick gps why wouldnt gmaps use that ? my location is a little off but i am inside a brick apartment building. and its only off several blocks?
any way to configure gps to gmaps ?
hi guys, i just dont know why my DHD gps signal is so weak. today i've been driving for 30 km and it could not connect to the satelites, all the way down it was "searching for gps". when i stop the car sometimes it finds the gps signal, but when i starting to drive, the signal drops down again. same problem with locations and google navigation. any ideas folks ?
Could be anything really, there are a lot of factors. If you're riding a hayabusa, it might not be able to keep up......!
Try a factory reset and see if it helps. I personally haven't had any issues.

Did you get any answer from HTC? I have also problems with the GPS-signals on my DHD. Have you checked your gps.conf file in the \etc\ directory?
My gps.conf file contains a NTP server line and it says North-America.pool.ntp.org. I think that this is what causes the slow GPS fix.
Your'e from Irland and I'm from Norway and be both should use the european NTP server. Anyone else may know something about this?
I have the same frustrating problem, just bought my DHD full of expectation here in Dubai. I bought it new at Dubai Airport Duty free and it came with same problem, very poor (nearly zero) GPS reception. It also comes with NTP_Server file north america.pool
But I really believe there is something wrong with the hardware because when I contacted HTC and shortly explained the problem with the GPS reception they immediately ask me to return the product to the HTC technical center here for repair/replacement if necessary (mine is still under warranty). The fact that they so quickly advised me to return the device made me think this is a known problem for them but since their office is so far from my house I am still relutant to take my phone there (this is a nightmare for a brand new phone of 700 USD) I tried everything I could, factory reset, different rom's, all possible apps in the world!, anything you imagine including laying the phone on my backyard overnight with full 360g sky view + data and Wi-Fi connected but no success at all, just 3 or 4 sats on view with poor reception. My HD2 with WM6.5 and Android can fix signal using same apps in 5 sec. inside my room!!! my DHD takes hours for a very weak signal and it drops like anything. I will take my phone to service center this week, can't wait anymore for a web solution...what a hassle...
Just finished Twitter chat with a mate of mine who could NOT pick a GPS signal on his DHD.

Until he took his rubber case off the phone!
Strange but it worked.
Must it be rooted to edit the GPS.conf?

Download GPS Status from the Market. There's an option there to clear the A-GPS state and download new data from the mobile network!
Try that before sending it back. My DHD took ages to get a fix when I first got it, but now it fixes in seconds once the A-GPS state has been updated.
I've had this problem with different gps devices in the past and my dhd as well. You just have to leave it exposed to the sky for long enough to acquire current satelite locations. Preferably stationary otherwise it won't. Another way is to update the list over the internet with gps status or similar. No hardware problem tho.
Well.....as I said before....I tried GPS Test, GPS Status and many others. I have downloaded A-GPS quick fix info from the web, I have left the device exposed to open sky overnight and stationary, etc, etc, etc. No way to get a good signal, it always drop with any movement on the phone. I took my DHD this morning to the service center and a lady, supposedly technician tried to convince me for an hour that I have to leave 3G + Wi-Fi connected in order to use GPS. How comes the technical representative of HTC here in Dubai can be so stupid in telling me such rubbish.... anyways I was so pissed to see that she knew nothing about the phone neither GPS.... ok...story short.. I finally talked to her boss who very luckly had a DHD too. I took this guy outside the shop and showed him my DHD was searching for GPS signal forever and I did the same procedure in his phone in front of both of them. His DHD fixed signal in 5 sec. using Navi Premium, mine was still searching, ing, ing... The same guy called some other " HTC regional office" and someone told him that the version 1.32.405.6 (which is the one on my DHD) needs a ROM update because of language problems and very known problem with poor GPS reception however this ROM will be available only btw Feb/Mar. I was happy on one side to know that they acknowledged the problem, on the other hand we all have to wait 2 month for using the GPS. Whether this ROM in fact will solve the problem or not, this even they don't know, for now, useless GPS on my DHD and let's keep waiting. I am a bit skeptical about this ROM update since I have tried many different ROMs Stock and Custom even some of them with gps.conf europe.pool but no success, off course I didn't tell this to them otherwise I would void my warranty. My last chance is these new ROM release otherwise they will replace my GPS antenna or main board as far as they told me.
I'd regard it as hardware problem.

I am 99% convinced it's hardware problem too but before they mess up with my device trying to replace GPS antenna I will give it a last try with this new ROM release. I know very well how these people work here in Dubai and the last thing I want is people oppening my DHD and soldering components etc. I d rather accept one factory refurbished than fixing mine with those unskilled people. I hope they at least change the whole thing inside instead of replacing micro components.
I found this?
It´s actually for the nexus one with the CyanogenMod 6 (http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/09/09/gps-fix-for-cyanogenmod-6-on-the-nexus-one/)...
Can someone try it and tell me if it work? I have the same problem but as I´am a new user of android , I´m a little bit affraid to do this...
* Take your SIM out of the Nexus One
* Power on the device
* Turn WiFi on
* Turn GPS on
* Open application: GPS Status
* Go into its Settings menu
* Click on GPS and Sensors
* Click Manage A-GPS state
* Click Reset
* Click Manage A-GPS state again
* Click Download
* Now put your phone on a stable, straight surface in order to enable the phone to get a lock. This time, you’ll see your phone get the lock back way faster than before.
With that done, now it’s time to put your SIM back in and use the network to secure a quick GPS fix as well.
I have unlocked vibrant....and i'm with ATT....yesterday my GPS died on me after working for couple of months. I mean its dead...couldn't even lock any sats. today my sister who is with t-mobile used her sim becoz her phone wasn't working and i realized that my GPS started working.
I couldn't believe that so i tried my ATT sim again and GPS was gone...!!!
i don't understand this.....how can i fix my phone to work with ATT. now i know my gps was fine its just network....giving problem....OR NOT!!! some suggestions would be very helpful....thanks
Look at Kwkslvr's fix Basically it sounds like the spring tab is not connecting with the 2nd part of the antenna

Click to expand...
Click to collapse
I understand that but why it works on t-mobile sim though....
If it comforts you at all, two days ago my GPS died as well, it comes back to life whenever it wants, 90 % of times it won't lock at all. Oh and I have done the gps hardware fix, I have put a piece of credit card, still the gps wont work. Tried with heathens gps fix, Bionix etc...
In last week or so, I have noticed that in the Chicago area the network location stopped working for me. My guess is that AT&T is upgrading towers (4G) and Google needs to catch-up with tower location ids.
You can test by using Maps with GPS turned off. You should get the large circle for the network location. If not, you are having the same problem as I do. Network location is very important while using A-GPS.
