Making my tablet more productive! - Eee Pad Transformer General

I am finding I am using my TF mainly for surfing the internet, email, and for some simple games. What are you doing to make your use of it more productive? Do you find the doc necessary for making it more productive?

Just got mine last friday. Loving it but I'm in the play time right now.

Splashtop HD is great for video streaming from your desktop. Remote RDP is nice for remote desktop because it supports right click. Groove IP is a cool app, I can make calls with my Transformer. Extensive notes is really powerful note tool. Fresco lite is a fun drawing app. Eventually if you root you can mount cifs, and read and write windows shares.

It really depends on what your definition of "productive" is... For myself, I use my TF productively in these major ways:
1. I use it in tablet mode for conducting the research I need to do for my writing, as well as e-book reading and taking simple story/article notes (for which I use Evernote).
2. I use it in docked mode for longer notes, and for actual writing.
So, I find it quite the productivity tool both in tablet and docked mode. Of course, there are productive tasks I can't do on it at all, such as more complex documents and photo/video editing. That's why I still have both a desktop and a notebook.
For me, in short, the TF is very much an adjunct device that's more convenient and comfortable to use for some tasks, but too limited in functionality for others.

useful apps
I have created a page where I keep a list of the apps that I find useful with this tablet. Unfortunately the goofy forum rules don't let me post a link to it. Look for it on my site: facti.net (or do a google search)

Reading books/novels on the Xoom ?.

Just wondered if anyone was using their Xoom for reading ?. I have a kindle but it would nice if I was able to sell it and use the transformer for my main reading device.
I guess the screen wouldn't be ideal for the eyes but the plus point would be that you could use it to read at night without the need of a light. Also the interface is nicer than the kindle, but the weight is substantially more.
Any thought's ?
The Xoom works fine as an eReader....
Look at this thread for more info...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1094563
Yup using the kindle app to read my books. Had to use calibre to convert epubs to mobi.
It's pretty good for reading and it doesn't tire my eyes at all. Can't say about reading it in the dark because I usually leave the lights on when I'm reading in bed.
google books is great. Even if you read at night there is an option for that as well as you can change the brightntness or even make it white words on black backround
barnes and noble Nook app for android works great.
you can get it from the market, it is tablet optimised now. You can import your epub library, has night mode, 3d page turning, etc etc.

Great thanks, I'm hoping these various book apps incorporate the landscape 2-page style google books has adopted.
yep it does well on my xoom,
but i prefer reading on my 1st generation galaxy tab
I have no frame of reference for any other eReaders, but I use my Xoom quite a bit for reading. I've used the Nook and Kindle apps and Google Books, and they all work very well.

Yes, that's recent though...maybe since 3.1.
The XOOM has made it fun for me to read again. I totally love the Kindle app that works on the XOOM. I had gotten terribly lazy over the years about reading. Add to that, I almost have to read regularly because of my profession and the need to stay current in technology. But the XOOM has changed my attitude on everything. I've been buying and reading manuals left and right. The nice added benefit being that when I'm perhaps testing out a new process on the server, I take my XOOM with me and I can open to the proper section of the book on my XOOM. No need for carrying a bulky manual or pages of copies of extracts. I keep my entire System Administration library on my XOOM now and it's handy as all get out.
I have only one request. If the creators can add a feature so that pdf files can be imported into Kindle, I think I'll be in heaven. Some of my training materials do not come in Kindle format, but I would prefer to keep all my reading references and manuals in one place. Once pdfs can be imported, the manuals that aren't available in the Kindle store now can be on my Kindle anyway.
Sure just an e-reader may have been nice - even cute. However, to combine the resourcefulness of an e-reader with the power of a computer with extensive memory and plenty of apps that it will work in conjunction with and you have given me one seriously awesome tool. I can't fathom how tech people got along with tablets before this. Keep up the good work folks
Everybody keep on XOOMin'

I don't really like the nook app because it doesn't show the covers of my side loaded books in the library. I think this has been a problem on nook for many people.

Kindle only recognizes mobi format for ebooks. So you have to convert your ebooks to mobi using some software like calibre. You sideload them by copying them into the kindle folder inside the xoom internal memory.
Sometimes you need to restart the zoom for the kindle app to detect the books.
+1 for the nook app. You can import epub books easily and the brightness goes way down for reading at night. I am currently reading 1984, I started it on my phone but I couldn't get into it until I got the Xoom.
My favorite reading app so far is moon+ reader as its very comprehensive and I can log into to my calibre server and download books when I want. If they add a 2-page landscape mode it'll be perfect imo.

RepliGo is great for reading PDFs. It does a very good job with image-intensive magazines. It's very fast.
I think of the big three (Kindle app, Nook app, and Google Books) that Google Books and the Nook app are the more polished of the three, though the Kindle has the largest store. Whenever I learn of a book I want to purchase, I always check Google Books first, but to be honest, it rarely has what I'm looking for. I usually cringe and go make my purchase on Amazon.
All that aside, I think the Xoom makes a great e-reader. I actually prefer reading on LCD than Eink, because the light from the screen helps to keep me awake when I read in bed. The biggest problem with the Xoom? It's just a tad heavy. My wife has a Kindle, and it's a feather in comparison.

Got a Galaxy Tab 10.1 for Christmas, what do you do with your Tab?

Loving this tablet so far, just don't know what else I should be doing with it. I feel like it's my myTouch 4G all over again, no idea what to. First thing I did was install Minecraft, but I want to know, what do you do with your Galaxy Tab? (Watching porn is not an acceptable answer)
I mostly use it for Netflix, YouTube, browsing, and gaming.

i got mine like, 2/3 hours ago ) i'm trying to test all the bits on this before flashing another rom on it (specially, because I haven't flashed a tablet ever) and i'm still trying to get KIES to work with this (though, i would only sync music, and i use doubletwist for that :d)
already rooted, gonna flash a ROM but I dont know what ROM to flash, all I really want is Cyanogenmod 9.
I only use it for Twitter | Facebook | Angrybirds nuffsaid'
If you use it for anything else , then idk .
oh and root it & add CWM & add a custom-rom .
Root it and add the ad-hoc wifi hack so you can tether to your droid.
As to what to do with it - ebooks. Isn't that what tablets were invented for? LOL
I got mine two-three days ago and first thing I did was root it, installed Overcome's ROM and then just messed with it a bit.
I usually tether my Galaxy S 4G, take my Tab everywhere I go & usually just browse the internet... Facebook, look on Engadget, games, and maybe some pr0n.
I'm starting to use it more than I use my phone, I lurve it. It's my life now!
Surfing and ebookreading. Watching tv shows and movies. Listening to music. Almost the same as on the sgs 1.

Apart from being connected to my inboxes and google reader, I found it great for "mobile" web-surfing with a bigger screen, e-books and pdf reading with repligo, note taking with writepad stylus and freenote.
I use it for my work.....marketing - photo and pdf presentations, keep marketing materials on them for my use, surf the net, read books via the Kindle reader app.
Mine has pretty much replaced my laptop, which is now consigned to mostly being a media server. The only thing I use mine for that hasn't been mentioned is Skype video calling and as a radio, I listen to shows on BBC iPlayer and TuneIn Radio.
I have mine running GalaxyTask 10.0 and I couldn't be happier. Absolutely amazing for a Honeycomb ROM.
Better than my HP Touchpad and all Gingerbread ROMs with the (equality) of Skyraider for the Thunderbolt phone.
Bedside book reader with Nook app (sideloading .epub), web browser, mail client, ski report viewer, Google Talk station, etc.

Running Galaxy Task as well and its a hell of a lot better than the stock ROM, if games could run smoothly then I would be perfectly happy with this tablet.
I do almost anything that I use my desktop/laptop for on my tab. GoToMyPC app connects me to my desktop at work for quick access to files or dropbox access to all my machines. I was like you when I first got mine...soon the question will be what do I NOT use the tab for!

I do almost everything except play MW3 and SWTOR on my tab. To the point I probably will go back to a blackberry because I don't use my phone for much, other than to settle arguments here and there with google.
I pretty much use mine for watching movies and web browsing. Netflix and VPlayer are my two movie apps

[Q] A500 Has Horrible PDF performance. Any solutions?

Viewing PDFs on the A500 would seem to be a proper use of the tablet and the Tegra2 processor should provide a lag-free experience but in my opinion, the ability of the A500 to display PDFs is severely lacking.
Reading just about any PDF other than those that are text only will start off good but, after reading 20 pages or so, the change to the next page will begin to lag and basically freeze or display the page in an unresolved state (blurry) until it finally pops in to focus. This can take 10-15 seconds or more sometimes.
The only solution is to reboot.
I've been reading several magazines and it happens on all of them from Maximum PC, Scientific American, etc. Note that all the magazines I read are my own personal subscriptions or are archives as provided by the vendor in PDF format so these are not warez copies.
I'm using Adobe Acrobat, Documents to Go, Quickoffice, and the LumiReader. All perform poorly so it's got to be the hardware. These PDFs display quickly on my main PC.
Does everyone see this crappy PDF performance or have a solution?
Can you upload a troublesome .PDF for others to test.
I currently use ezPDF reader (I think it was one of those 10-cent sale deals in the Market). It does great even on complicated PDFs. That being said, I've never had any problem with Docs2Go either.
One of the first things I do when I buy something that's semi-complicated/sophisticated is see if there's a manual for it in PDF format, and then I have it on my tablet for future reference. I used to do the same with my phone, and prior to that with my Palm PDA. It wasn't until this tablet that it was remotely reasonable to read some of those manuals, as they're pretty complicated with text, graphics, diagrams, screenshots, etc. One or two are almost 400 pages long each.
I'm willing to try any "problem" PDF on ezPDF reader. Just link to it somewhere and I'll let you know.
I too agree with the above poster: ezPDF is plenty fast and it works when nothing else does. Perhaps it's worth trying?

I use the A500 daily to show clients catalogs showing products from heavy graphics PDF files using EzPDF. Never a problemn nor any perception of lag.
I properly index and bookmark my files and after the customers do some viewing on their own the reaction is usually "cool, where do I get one of these"... Sure beats fumbling through paper.
I have a lot of schematics/service manuals in PDF form on my tablet and have never had a problem with viewing them with Docs2Go. I will admit that usually I just read the relevant pages I need and don't ever read more than 20 or so, that may be why I don't have any issues. I'll try to flip through some of my thicker manuals and see if it starts to hang with me.
Common problematic PDFs are, for example, CPU Magazine or Maximum PC here:
http://www.computerpoweruser.com/DigitalIssues/ComputerPowerUser/CP____1202__/ Unfortunately, you have to load this display page first then click the download arrow on the left side.
http://dl.maximumpc.com/Archives/MPC_2011_11-web.pdf This is a direct link to the PDF.
Feel free to browse to those pages manually if you don't want to simply click on a link in a posting!
Either of those will start off good but, by page 20 or so, they really start to lag and make reading the second half of the magazine a chore.
I'll take a look at ezPDF and see how it does. Thanks for the suggestion.
I've pretty slick performance with Adobe Reader. Is your PDF non-standard?
I downloaded the Maximum PC pdf from your link.....Tested in lumiread, Officesuite,
PDF to Go and QuickOffice Pro....
Not seeing the lag your getting ....Ive went page by page and worst case --only takes maybe 2-3 seconds to load a full page ad on any of the readers. Tried it in both landscape and portrait using full screen and zoom...
If you haven't tried it....reboot your machine and test it again.
Another thought is if you have them stored on a sd card or usb stick that is faulty may be causing a problem.
Also I found that if I up the CPU to 1400MHz from the stock 1000MHz it does seem to speed load time for each page.
I'm on a stock 3.2.1 rooted rom with a custom kernel for over-clocking when needed.

Using ezPDF I scrolled/paged all the way through page 60 of Maximum PC with no real significant lag. Going through the full page images in the NAS reviews was the slowest, but that only meant it would take a full second to load the page, which I wouldn't call that lag as it would've likely taken longer if viewing the same on a web page.
I would try ezPDF, and if you still get lag then there's something wrong with your tablet. I'm currently running a rooted but otherwise stock HC 3.2.1 ROM. I did remove some bloat apps myself, but I'm running the stock kernel so it's not overclocked.

Ive been pdf reading on the iconia a500 for some time now, using lumiread, adobe and ezpdf and even the document reader for ICS and no lag here.
I'm thinking there is a rogue process slowing ur sys over time. Factory reset ur sys, run all the official updates (if ur rooted, used the rooted official updates not the custom ones)
Then install just your pdf apps and try reading, see what happens, if it runs lag free, start reinstalling your apps, with the most essential ones first and keep and eye open for performance degradation.
I just downloaded your trouble PDF but I had no difficulty at all. It have to agree that it is most likely a software issue. Are you rooted? If so you may want to do a dirty flash (install your ROM again without wiping data or cache). It may be a ROM bug too, but then the devs would likely have a lot of people submitting the same issue. However, if its an app conflict a dirty flash probably won't fix it.
RepliGo Reader is also great for PDF. It even let you full screen your PDF.
I've had no trouble at all with adobe PDF reader. It loads up my textbooks which are usually over 500 pages without any sort of problem.
I can scroll through them or search to find whatever I need and its always smooth.
I'm using the stock ota 3.2.1 w/out root.

I purchased an original iPad for my son and an iPad2 for my daughter. Getting those two iCraps to do even half of what my A500 can do has been a ridiculous chore, and I'm a career network engineer.
Is the iPad smoother in some circumstances? Sure. But it better be -- it's at least 2x the price and it's not like you can change anything (mod, ROM, tweak, etc.) if you don't like the performance.
No thanks! I'll happily keep my A500.

I bought mine with the intention of using it for school. A couple of the textbooks I needed were available in PDF form, and I actually saved money by buying a new gadget... win/win!
Realistically I've mostly been using it for development. I'm currently working on an app for tablets, and I don't have a tablet other than this one. I've also been trying to help out with the ICS development, and frankly this post is to help get me to the 10-post threshold so I can answer someone's question in a development thread (kind of silly if you ask me).

I use my atrix for mostly the communication part of the phone for school and work. Like email, messaging, calls, and Lapdock. The phone calendar is the thing the keeps me on task. I use the atrix almost like a business tool.
.......the you have all those fun apps you have to try......
That's a whole other story.

anybody tried full ubuntu inside atrix and connect to an HDTV?
I use my atrix for...
Well this is my first "power-phone" I've had. I don't consider my iPhone 3gs a power-phone. So tonight I will attempt to install backtrack Linux on it (Debian variant) for pen-testing remotely. Should be interesting. The hardware can BY FAR support it, and there are multiple ported arm versions available. Wish me luck. If anyone else has done it, regardless of distro please pm me you're experience!
I always use my Atrix to watch Despicable Me all over again!!
I use my Atrix as a pocket notebook (springpad), music player and mobile browser.
I also have offline navigation map installed, but never used it.

I run a debian made from scratch via debootsrap and it works fine and was fairly easy to do.
If you are just running this as command line (no X), it is fairly easy to do. Just follow any standard ubuntu chrooting guide (or look up "ubuntu on android"). From a 'droid terminal chroot over and you are there.
One catch, if you run as a non-root user you must be in grouup 3003 (it's in the 'droid kernel) to use IP sockets. 3004 to use raw sockes, and 3001 if you care about bluetooth (took me an entire day to find that comically stupid issue).
If you need an X interface, there are 2 ways to go. Either use the Moto webtop ubuntu to get X up, then chrrot over to your stuff over. Or run a VNC server in your 'nux and use the android VNC viewer.
As I presume you know what you are doing on the linux side, this will not be difficult.
There are a few threads over in the dev section that go into a lot more detail.
Design icons in inkscape? Build websites? Contact anyone any time? Considering its 960 landscape it also allows you to easily browse almost any webpage. Its a damn awesome phone.
I just wish they'd done webtop right as opposed to than weird virtual thing its doing. Ubuntu screams on a 1ghz processor with 1gb ram. Webtop however sort of whimpers =/
Needs room to grow I guess.

Thanks for the advice your setup looks like exactly what i need. Command prompt and a root user, the rest is trivial and ill play with it for giggles. Thanks again for the reply.

Hrm.. webtop seems to run nice for me. Streaming movies or youtube is lag free. My vnc sessions seem fine. Not sure. I am writing some more advanced html5 web apps to test with webtop to see how well it utilizes the newer functions. But then again it is firefox, i expect it to pass with flying colors.
