Just kinda wondering what to use and where to go to root my mytouch3g slide.............anybody. I've tried a couple different roots that didn't work. Preferrably a easy method please.

the one i posted is the method i used and know it works if you pay attention to all the details and do everything right. post #4 is about downgrading, but you can also try what he said to root, he tested that and it works.

Just to respond about post #4, it also does work. I verified it yesterday and it worked very easily. That said, if you are completely new to the rooting world (which I am guessing LoveITSel might be) then the post #3 has A LOT fewer assumptions than does post #4. Post #4 assumes that you know a few things prior to running the process and that you have them in place. But it definitely does work very well, and does not require the gold card creation, which is nice.

Ok thanks so much I'm gonna try it now and hopefully don't brick my phone

It's run from a CD that you make from an ISO Image. You have to restart your computer and boot the disk while you have your phone connected. Follow the on screen instructions.
S=OFF turns off the security on the device... It's really not an open device until you have S=OFF.

Rooting the G2? A little help kinda confused with things.

Hey guys ill be joining this side of the forums now on monday and I'm really excited. Just I'm kinda confused about a few things and I was wondering if anyone could help enlighten a few things for me.
I know what Root is, S-off, Cid yada yada and I'm not new to rooting at all. I have adb and etc and I kinda want to do this on ubuntu because my vista is kind of janky at times.
Now apparently there is Temporary Root and Permanent Root and of course I want Permanent root, s-off, etc.
1.Now from what I read there has been apparently an update that updated the G2 to 1.22 or something like that? I read its rootable apparently but you need a windows application called gfree or something? Is this possible to do using just ubuntu?
2. Now to obtain root, s-off etc do I have to obtain temporary root first, then permanent root? Its kinda confusing coming in a noob to this device and trying to figure this all out. And do the methods vary with which firmwire your phone comes with? I'm assuming mines will come with the newest OTA since I'm receiving it Monday.
3. Also from what I'm seeing apparently having S-off and root and what not matters on what rom your running also? I don't want to flash a rom then end up loosing root or something. And Noo I DO NOT want to stay stock once I obtain root. I'm kind of a flashoholic.
Thanks to anyone willing to help I really appreciate it.

Shouldn't yall warn him about using VISIONary first? SOMETIMES, no NOT all the time but SOMETIMES people get stuck in a boot loop from using the VISIONary method. I would not recommended it, if you have know how to use ADB, use it. I'm pretty sure that they have ADB for Linux because they do have the Android SDK on Linux(at least I think they do). All you need to do in order to root with the safer/recommended way is ADB. All you have to do is ADB Push some files to your phone then run them on your phone's Terminal Emulator App, its pretty simple. Though I have not personally rooted a G2 yet(I get mine tomorrow) but I have spent at least a week learning about how to root the G2.
Check out the wiki, explains how to root using rage+gfree.

First of all follow the link I gave him, did you bother to do that, there was a warning, second of all I've helped a lot of people root following the videos and have had zero bricks as long as they do everything I posted in the link, third I rooted this way with zero problems, when people brick their phones its not visionary that bricks phones it people that think they know how to properly use visionary when they don't that bricks phones, its not just pressing the " attempt perm root" button to root your phone, you have to press certain settings in order to use it right.

This may be the wrong set of subforums, then.
Assuming you mean the Mytouch 4G, not 3G, there are several methods for rooting, not all require adb. One such method is called "Visionary" -- detailed instructions can be found at theunlockr.com.
wow yeah thanks
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
There is one click root for both 3g and 4g
2.15 radio
2.2miui stock via cwm
Being that i have an older MyTouch and my Dad has one, i will tell you this. IF you/your buddy has downloaded and installed the 2.2 OTA update you MUST downgrade to 1.6 prior to rooting the phone.
http://theunlockr.com/category/howto/android_how_tos/htc-mytouch-1-2-fender-mytouch-how-tos/
(^^^ Give you are using the 1.2 Version of the MyTouch3G)
Once it is downgraded look for and install Universal Nandroot, download install root and do your cyanogen thing.

Keep in mind with a rooted phone and a bad eMMC, you are using a ticking time bomb. Keep in mind the phone will fail [brick], it might not be now, it might not be a week but it will happen.
That's not true... It will only fail if you don't know what you are doing and that could happen w a good chip too ... When u root via gfree, proceed to also flash the 85. 2007 ENG bootloader

There are well educated, when it comes to Android, people all over the Internets when it comes to this phone going FUBAR due to a faulty eMMC chipset.
If the chip set is bad it's a ticking timebomb.
That's an opinion that anyone is entitled to but I am speaking purely based on personal experience... I have rooted many phones with both good and bad chips, none of which have ever had in any problems... And based on actual results the phone with a "bad" eMMC chip holds max overclock much better and easier than my phone with a good chip... I was one who went back to stock on the bad chip without flashing stock radio and everyone said it was the end of the world and it would never have s off again... However after editing the misc. Img in mmcblk0p17 with hex editor I now have s off... So it just depends on who's flashing the phone

Check this out, i would be willing to bet this will work. It sounds much more difficult than it actually is. Just follow the steps and it will be simple.. i downloaded HEX QL editor which is free and super easy to use.... the version number that u need to edit is on the furthest right side (misc.img). The directions below are easy to follow and worked for me to get s off and root when it seemed impossible. Long story short, you will pull the misc.img to your sdcard and then plug phone into computer and open the misc.img on sdcard using the hex editor. Change the version number and save that file as miscnew.img and place on sdcard. Important to remember that the version you will be flashing is unable to obtain root however gfree and visionary will still carry out the proper root process you just wont notice permroot until a custom rom is flashed....i realized this after running the gfree process at least 8 times lmao . Ask any questions u have that are unclear from this link.

exactly. That's why we're in the mytouch 4g forum. Which is where my post applies.

[Q] Terminal Emulator Does will not open after force close

Hello, yes, first post!
I am trying to root HTC Mytouch 4G.
I have adb and fastboot and am working through Mac OS terminal. That has worked great!
I was using this guide for gfree tem root and gfree perm root. http://simply-android.com/discussion/960/guide-how-to-permroot-g2-with-g-free-safest-method/p1 - originally starting here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=834228, but wanting to use Gfree instead of vision for the permanent root part.
I pushed all the Gfree temp files to the sd card (su, superuser.apk etc) and ran the Terminal Emulator prompts to attain temporary root. I got the desired "forked #### childs" message - but when I reset term, the terminal just went to a blank terminal window - the guide says that Terminal will exit. Finally, after I pressed some keys it force closed. After that I could not re open Terminal Emulator at all. The system also seemed bogged down at this point, everything was lagging until I rebooted. Obviously I was unable to continue with the Gfree perm prompts - never having gotten a root prompt in Terminal Emulator, as I could not get it to reopen.
I retried this after several reboots (maybe 10 times). I always got through the "rage" prompts just fine to the "forked #### childs" message.
I hope that someone may know what is wrong with Terminal Emulator or why it would not reset and give me the root "#"prompt to continue with permanent root.
Thanks in advance - trying to get 10 posts to ask the actual developer - but even then the thread is 3 years old.

First off thanks for answering.
Second, I understood that you could root the my4g with the g2 instructions.
Finally, I could not try VISIONary because the link does not have a file anylonger.
Do you know a sure fire mytouch 4g method? The phone is sim unlock and s=on. I have the ota update to gingerbread and would like to root from there without reverting to Froyo, if possible.
Thank you in advance

The visionary method works of you just typed visionary.apk into Google you would get it........but if you have a bad emmc when it reaches the part to get s off root.sh won't work if u follow the guide on the unlockr.com u will be ok. You would just need to get visionary from else where and when it reaches the part to get permroot and u have to use the terminal instead of the instructions in the guud go down to the comments and get the file that the guy said worked for him and follow those instructions and u will get s off at which point you may go back to the unlocked to continue to get a custom recovery and ROM.............if your phone starts behaving strange beware the bad emmc chips and take precautions right away

Awesome, I appreciate it. I haven't addressed this because I've been playing with my phone and lost the ich to work on it. This is my wife's 4G and the more I use it the more I think it is a great phone -size, sleekness, screen and speed are all really nice. Too bad they don't start allowing people to add RAM to phones. (Unless it is possible and I just don't know it) That could keep older "cult" phones in play longer, much like Custom roms, but from a hardware standpoint. Anyway...
Ps - what roms have you had three best experience with for the mytouch?

Awesome, I appreciate it. I haven't addressed this because I've been playing with my phone and lost the ich to work on it. This is my wife's 4G and the more I use it the more I think it is a great phone -size, sleekness, screen and speed are all really nice. Too bad they don't start allowing people to add RAM to phones. (Unless it is possible and I just don't know it) That could keep older "cult" phones in play longer, much like Custom roms, but from a hardware standpoint. Anyway...
Ps - what roms have you had three best experience with for the mytouch?

I am currently on Dark Unicorn v2.5 and it's insane amazing. Minus the lack of 720p recording, it's bomb-diggity! :victory:
If I would have to pick a best experience, I would say Stock 2.3.4 because everything works. Ha ha
Others:
Android Revolution HD
CM7.2
Yeah Dark Unicorn, and Synthetic's AOSPX. Pac-man and venom touch have good tweaks for their rom though .

Interesting. Do you get markedly better performance with dark unicorn, due to the deoxing and kernal?
Honestly, debloating is a big factor in why I root.
