[Q] Difference between Gen1, Gen2, and Gen3 - Acer Iconia A500

I have been searching around and have not found an explination to this, so I thought I would just ask. Looking around, I see the 3.1 OTA most people got was Gen2. In the developers section, you can download one that is Gen1. Prior to the OTA some people had a 3.01 Gen3 ROM. What is the difference in the Gen1, Gen2, and Gen3 ROMs? The thread in the developers section with the 3.1 Gen1 ROM says it is a newer build then the GEN2 3.1 OTA that we got. Is this true? Thanks to any and all of you that help clear this up for me.

Good question. I am looking for that explanation as well.
Thanks.

If I had to guess, I would think it's probably slight design revisions, but that does not necessarily mean newer is better. Some changes can be done to cut costs or facilitate components from different suppliers. Of course sometimes things do get improved, but who knows with these versions....
Rob

I've also been trying to find the answer to this.
I've seen GEN5, GEN6, CUS7, NORDIC etc as well. Would be great to know what they all mean.

I'll throw my best guess in the ring and say- Maybe it has to do with production batches (GEN1= earliest prod, etc.) or global regions (GEN2 = N.America..)?.../shrug

I'd guess it's just software revisions. Some batches got GEN1 flashed, some GEN2, etc...
I don't believe there's been any hardware differences found between models (excluding A500 vs. A501).

My question is can we flash ROMs of one GEN to the other? e.g. my iconia is showing GEN5, but I have not seen any custom ROMs with this number, can I flash a GEN1 ROM without breaking something?

I can't see why not.

The GENs are set for regions, so Acer can keep track of OTA.

Absolutely!

Doesn't them limit WIFI channel range or GSM band range based on region?

Most custom ROM's allow 14 channels already because it's handled by the build.prop file. This can also be added to a stock rooted ROM by adding this line:
ro.wifi.country=EU

[INFO] Centralize Galaxy Tab P1000L/P1000N Development

Hi fellows,
For sure, more than 95% of ROM development at XDA is devoted to P1000 version (Euro/USA/... Galaxy Tab version). Unfortunately (or not...), Samsung released at Latin America two different versions of GT: P1000L and P1000N. My researches shown that theses version has different hardware from P1000 one, and the most important, IMO, is the touchscreen. Conclusion: when we try to use custom ROMs, we aren't able to even use it.
So, I have started this thread to centralize information regarding P1000L/P1000N. Please, if you have these devices and have already tried to use a custom ROM or Kernel, please post the information here. With this, we can verify what modifications we need to make to adapt XDA custom ROMs/Kernels to our GTs.
We have the following topics here on XDA about our devices:
Humberto's ROM and Kernel (Froyo)
Humberto have compiled a Froyo Kernel and ROM with many improvements
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974408
Humberto's Kernel (Gingerbread)
Humberto have modified the original, leaked P1000N gingerbread kernel to add Lagfix and gave us instructions how P1000L users can flash P1000N gingerbread version
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124224
My Gingerbread kernel
I have compiled a P1000L/N kernel for gingerbread after the source code release, adding many things like UV, OC, new governors, etc. To avoid mess with Humberto's thread, I decided to start a new one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1274855
With the right kernels now, we can flash customs ROM like:
BOCA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1172307
Overcome
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1205990
CM7
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=931857
OBS.: Always refer to P1000L/N Gingerbread thread from Humberto to verify which kernel you need to flash to use one of these ROMs!
Thanks!
I can provide the PDA, Modem and CSC Multi files to be flashed in Odin for P1000N from Claro provider if they're needed at all, only downside is that they're JJ1 not the JJ5 which they're currently shipping Tabs with. Honestly I don't see any difference between the versions, but there should be some.
Well, apparently we got a new kernel for GT-P1000L deceives that camera and TV tuner is fully working and has interesting capabilities, like 1.4GHz overclocking! Thanks to @humberos. More info on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=974408
Additionally, my Vivo GT has received an update through Kies and now my ROM version is P1000LVJJMA, which I don't know yet if this kernel is compatible. I have contact @humberos and we will try to find out.

Currently http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1124224 is a Gingerbread Kernel that can run a version of CM7.
I can not attest to validity of the ROM, as I don't have a latin version, but yeah... There it is.

I see a lot of P1000CWLZTO being offered in online shops in Brazil.
Would that be a third version: "P1000C"?
What are the differences between the L, N and C versions?
I do like to have the digital TV. Actually, is it just 1seg? Does it show 16:9 broadcasts correctly (soccer!)?
Thanks!
Hi! I just got a gt-P1000n unlocked tablet from Chile. I leave in Canada.
Froyo 2.2, baseband P1000NUBJM2.
This is my first expeeience with android, i come from wm.
I've got a lot to learn.
After many unsuccessful attempts with z4root, i did root my tab with oneclickroot.
I have read these latin tabs are different than others. How?
Lesser quality?
I can't find any specs comparaison on the web.
Thanks

Not at all... just a little different in hardware. I had that firmware on my P1000N. Maybe if you check on the small print on the back of your tab, you should see P1000N... let us know.
Basically we have a few different Tab hardwares. The P1000, Euro US and etc, both GSM and CDMA versions. Latin versions P1000L / N (and maybe C as commented above). P1000L and N are the same, except P1000N does NOT have TV, P1000L has TV, 1seg like in Brazil. There is also another different hardware, the Tab with wifi only (no SIM chip).
Since P1000 is the most commonly used one, there is a lot more development going on for it... but luckyly we have HumberOS for the salvation of our latin version tabs. Just Google "xda humberos" to find his posts.
Cheers.
Yes i have the 1000N.
I read here it is difficult to flash an gingerbread orovercome rom!?!?
Only Hubertos roms are working, isn't it?

You can flash Gingerbread from Samsung. If you want to flash anything customized, like Overcome rom, you need to do it through humberos kernel, made for our latin tabs.

Yes, you loose root. Then you can just flash humberos' cf-root or voodoo lagfix kernel to get root back. Overcome is very good and stable. Just remember to replace the zImage file inside Overcome's zip file with HumberOS' kernel voodoo lagfix.

That's it. Read the last page of the thread. rlkalves just flashed Gingerbread.
Always use original USB cable from Samsung for flashing. Don't use USB HUBs. Make sure you have a good tight USB port, make sure your Windows and USB Drivers are all 100% and close all software to run ODIN or Heimdall ALONE.

I did install Overcome Hermes but overlooked the fact that there is still not usb connection to pc. Al sd cards and browse.though from kies i am able to get into internal and external
What is the procedure to go to another gb rom like Jupiter?
Is it a matter of repackaging the Jupiter's zip with latest zImage from first post and install via sd card with Recovery Cwm mode?
Restart from begining with stock Froyo?
Wait for Humberto to work on it?
For CM7?
From hermes do i directly
Download CM7 Beta
Uncompress .zip file and replace zImage.
Use Heimdall to flash it.

So what am I missing?

Reading through these forums has been a real education; much thanks to everyone for posting and sharing!
I was given a reconditioned A500 by a friend (obviously a very good friend!), stock Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1 with Android v3.0.1. Rooted with Gingerbreak, everything running fine. Really love the tablet.
Anyway, been looking over all of the choices for upgraded ROMS so graciously provided by members of the community, and hit a little analysis-paralysis. What are the major advantages (other than the "latest-and-greatest" factor) to upgrading to 3.1, 3.2, or 3.2.1? Is there any "must-have" advantage to the upgrade? And will my GEN1 have issues with some of the ROMs developed from GEN2 packages?
Thanks for being patient with an old dog trying desperately to learn some new tricks...
The later the version of Honeycomb generally the more stable and quicker it runs. You probably notice with 3.0 and 3.0.1 there are a lot of force closes on apps. There are other benefits to newer versions, such as ability to plug in USB peripherals etc, but I don't know all of them off the top of my head.
One problem that many people learned (myself included) was that when we got the upgrade to 3.2, those who had root lost it and nobody could figure out how to root it because Acer changed their boot loader. Since then people have found ways around it. Custom ROMs that the devs had created here usually make the tablet run better (of course there are risks to doing this and the occasional bug!). Some people run custom ROMS to overclock, some load them to remove Acer Bloatware and some just have the urge to try new and great things.
In terms of having issues with GEN1 and GEN2 packages, when you are installing custom ROMS made by the DEVs on XDA you won't have to worry. I think the GEN1 and GEN2 are just for ACER to distinguish things like the country that the device is from, or to determine when they should be receiving OTA updates.

Early HC versions have issues with Netflex, video, voice, GPS, etc. Alot of the drivers have been patched since 3.0.1.

If you want a mostly stock rom with just Root and busybox I suggest this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1429199
It is very fast and very smooth. haven't run into any problems or force closes yet.
I found that the full screen feature of 3.2 and 3.2.1 was a great reason to upgrade. My iconia came with 3.1 on it and i was content with that rooted until i learned that my apps that didnt fill the screen (guitar hero 5) and some that just didnt run (dance dance revolution s) worked great in full screen on 3.2+.
Greatly appreciate all of the responses. It's pretty clear I need to read the threads here and learn how to upgrade the Android in this tablet. (I especially appreciate starkiller86's pointer to the 3.2.1 sorta-stock image...that looks like the most sensible direction for me to go.)
Thanks again!

Simply upgrading your tablet is not anywhere near as easy as you think it is. You need to flash a custom ROM, changing your tablets firmware. Currently, we do have a couple of ROMs available but each of them has something not working correctly. Also, please note that there are two elocity tablets. One is the A7, and one is the A7+. If you try to flash a ROM intended for the A7 onto the A7+, you will brick your tablet, rendering it completely useless. In other words, i would reccomend reading around these forums and searching for details about ROMs. If you still want Homeycomb after reading up on the facts, then there is a post here by Dexter that will give you a verry buggy version of Honeycomb. Jam4 over at Tablet Roms is actually working on stabilizing a HC ROM right now for the A7+, andd if you want to wait a little you could get that ROM.

Sorry to not get this Tutorial as elaborated as I wroth before but I get flustered by getting a error when submit
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I use a windows software call SamFirm do download VERY FAST the lastest original firmware from Samsung servers.
Link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-s/general/tool-samfirm-samsung-firmware-t2988647
Note 1: You need to specify the “Region/Country” of the Firmware. For that, you can look at some sites that have the same Firmware (Links below). But don’t download from this sites, because is VERY SLOW.
http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SM-T230NU
http://www.sammobile.com/firmwares/database/SM-T230NU/
http://www.androidayos.com/galaxy-tab-4-stock-firmware/
http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/general/links-stock-galaxy-tab-4-firmware-t3013128
Note 2: The region “BNN” is for the Samsung galaxy Tab 4 7.0 Nook Edition
How to use SamFirm:
1 - Model = SM-T230NU <-----------------(Ex: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook 7.0" = SM-T230NU)
2 - Region = BNN <------------------------(Ex: “BNN” for Nook Edition)
3 - Auto = ON
4 - Click "Check Updates", if firmware for the particular region exist you see a msg in Log Window below
5 - Check CRC32 = ON <--------------------- Check is the file is intact
6 - Decrypt automatically = ON <----------- Decrypt file after download
7 - Click "Download” and choose the destination folder
8 – Extract the .md5 using 7-Zip (Nota: WinRAR get error sometimes)
9 – Done, now you can use Odin3 to upgrade you firmware
Cheers

It sounds like you were asking about custom ROMs, as opposed to keeping official firmware up to date which is what BXA is talking about. For the record, instead of installing an extra app just to keep up to date on official firmware releases, you can always check my threads which I keep up to date on official firmware releases for all Tab 4 variants:
--Official Tab 4 KitKat Firmware thread
--Official Tab 4 Lollipop Firmware Thread
Assuming you were inquiring about custom ROMs, below is a list of the most popular and/or well-maintained ROMs that will work for your device (pro-tip, even if the ROM says it's only for the SM-T230, it will work on your device, but you probably will lose IR blaster functionality). Before you ask, there are no viable CyanogenMod-based or even AOSP-based ROMs for this device (or SM-T230). They tried to get CyanogenMod working for your device, but as of right now the available builds either don't boot entirely or boot but have bugs like Wi-Fi not working. I'll link to the thread with the relevant info and downloads, but don't expect much, certainly nothing stable enough for daily use. The list I promised you:
--Acheron ROM (well maintained, popular, great dev to interact with, and even though I don't own your device, my recommended starting point)
--Prism Barebones (unfortunately apparently no-longer maintained, but still a solid, popular ROM by a well-respected dev, a legit alternative to Acheron)
--TranchidaKat (seemed to be gaining in popularity, unfortunately the dev recently took a break from maintenance)
--T230 Smooth ROM (I don't really know much about this ROM, but from what I can tell it seems/seemed reasonably popular)
There are a couple more ROMs I feel reluctant even mentioning, and can't really recommend with any sort of confidence. The first had an OK dev (seemed to be in the up and coming, eager to learn but not experienced stage of being a ROM developer): Octagon ROM
The next ROMs I'm going to mention I can't recommend in good confidence not just they're now slightly out of date, but because they seemed to have a few bugs, but more so the developer doesn't do much to instill my confidence in their knowledge base when it comes to developing ROMs for android. Also they're not really custom ROMs more than they're just the stock ROM with themes and skins applied, as opposed to any real under-the-hood performance improvements: Everything Google ROM; the previous ROM with a Marshmallow skin; and Android 5.0 Lollipop Material Design -{theme}-
Finally the CyanogenMod thread I mentioned, even though as I said, you will be disappointed if you insist on downloading anything to try it out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/general/dev-cm12-1-t230-nu-development-thread-t3190971
One last thing before I go, in case you haven't found the custom recovery you need, you have three (although the first two are more recommended) choices: an older version of TWRP which I can guarantee will work: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/general/root-galaxy-tab-4-7-t230-t2835264
Or a newer version of TWRP which should work for your device but I cannot personally guarantee that (click the link that says twrp-3.0.0.0-degas-160207-0212): http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/development/recovery-twrp-2-8-1-0-samsung-galaxy-t2922795
Regarding that newer TWRP, I'm pretty sure I've seen posts confirming it works for your device but I can't recall for sure and I personally installed the first (older version) on a friend's SM-T230NU, so your call. If you have a strong personal preference for CWM as opposed to TWRP, you can try the following recovery, but it's not actively maintained any longer, so be warned. Although to be fair, it works fine as far as I can tell, so again your call: http://forum.xda-developers.com/tab-4/development/recovery-philz-smnu-t2980094

He is right, Sultan has the best camera HAL made. And his updates are always on point. The new Nougat are still making there way slowly. I will try the Lineage OS and see how that feels
The OnePlus 3T has different localized 'editions' (Chinese/Europe/American) with many different model numbers, but this is rarely acknowledged anywhere, even on stores and seller pages... and ROM pages. So are the custom ROMs all compatible with all OP3T editions??? This is important to know before I buy.
S o if I order from eBay (f.ex. here http://www.ebay.com/itm/OnePlus-3T-...hash=item3adc4f7b23:m:mabzF9tgMzSIzry7j2PXvYA but it doesn't matter much from where I guess and most will likely be Chinese edition, with power adapter suitable for your country), of course ensuring support network bands in my country, can I be sure that I'll be able to use the bootloader unlock/custom recovery/custom kernel/custom ROMs?
Probably most editions are similar with difference bands and maybe completely identical hardware, but it still seems like missing basic information.

Why aren't you buying it official if the price is same?
Because I'm not in the US. If you have a different idea, I'd gladly hear it.
Funnily enough, the official store doesn't seem to specify what model number they send you, either. Though it's probably only the American one, still missing basic info (model...).

Your site doesn't have this info in the screenshot?
You might as well wait a few days and try and snag the midnight black version at this point.

Okaaaaay.... Repeating myself here:
-Most sites list compatible bands. Almost no sites cite actual model you get (e.g. A3010, A3000, A3003).
-That site (oneplus.net) doesn't ship outside the US, which is where I am.
I'm guessing that if nobody says anything about it, then custom stuff support all OP3T variants, but confirmation would be nice

The sites are not going to tell u the model you get because they send it to u by the address u give them for delivery. So if u give a USA address they send u a USA model.

Each model has different bands but they all run the same software.
