[Q] How to update on rooted play? - Xperia Play General

My phone tells me there is a software update. I accept, it goes through the whole process but then says unable to update. I assume its due to me being rooted via gingerbreak?
Is there a way to update?
Is there a way to un-root my phone?
Thanks in advance.

Are you try to update via ota? Are you already on 2.3.3? Have you uninstalled any of the preinstalled apps?
If you are on 2.3.3 already there is no new update out for the phone. If you are still on 2.3.2 and are trying update via ota you will need all the preinstalled apps still on the phone, if you have uninstalled anything you will either need to reinstall the apks from here or redo the process of flashing 2.3.2 (to regain the uninstalled apps) then rooting and then doing the ota to update to 2.3.3.
Rooting will not stop you from getting an ota update as long as the bloat is still present. So it would be better to freeze the apps instead of uninstalling (if you plan to do the ota update in october to 2.3.4). If you want to un-root your phone you can reinstall gingerbreak and when you open gingerbreak click unroot, but it is not required to unroot to update.

Thankyou! I cant remember what bloat I deleted, how do I flash 2.2.3? Im a complete noob at all this, but im trying to learn.

Regards Dousan...

If you dont want to keep root and you have a locked bootloader you can just use SEUS (google it) and it will install 2.3.3 on your phone even if you have uninstalled something. But as said you will loose root.
Or follow the links in Dousan's post to update while keeping root. Just flash the uk 2.3.2, then root, then do the ota update without removing anything and you will be on 2.3.3 with root. There is another guide here diff poster but the same guide really. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116090

rooted ota

Will there be a rooted ota for people who didn't install it or never got it. I rooted my phone and would like the better radio in hopes I will get more cell bars
There's already the option to root if you already applied the OTA update or are planning to.

i dont understand what u mean i have perm root without the ota. If i install the ota it will break root. Will i have to go thru the whole process again if i do this? I know on the mytouchslide when they came out with an ota they just rooted it so it wouldnt break the current root
i havent tried perm root yet. however search this site for 'visionary' root, which is all u really need for now. i had visionary root installed along with several root only apps (titanium backup, cachemate, setcpu, several others) and the OTA installed while my phone was rooted with absolutely no problems.
I installed the ota over the perm root and now I have no superuser permissions. When I try to run visionary it says my phone is already rooted yet I cannot run apps that require root or get the # in termal can anyone help with this
lol
the "#" denotes root access lol...... (coming from a marginal linux background..)

Have you tried reapplying s-off?
I am also interested in getting a solution because right before I rooted my phone I started getting ota update notifications for my phone and now I cant upgrade my phone but the notifications continue to persist. So I figure if I can get a rooted update or delete something, I can get rid of notifications.
ok i got it working what i did was do what somesaid in the begining and that was to follow the guide that doesnt use visionary for perm root. I think its call temp to perm root. I always had the s-off just not the perm root. everything is fine now
At least you were able to apply the update. I tried doing that and Clockworks Recovery halted it because some signature was verified or something.

I didnt use clockworks recover i used the orginal. It just made me loose root and not s-off so i used the temp-too-perm root to get it back because visionary was saying my phone was already rooted. I believe I was getting this cause i had rooted without the ota the first time. The second time i used the ota.ko Instead of the preota.ko because i used this when i didnt update to the ota on the first run.
Oh, okay. Thanks for that. I'm currently in the same boat you were in. I applied the OTA and it's reporting S-OFF, Visionary is saying I'm rooted, but certain things aren't working.
In the process of getting it fixed.
EDIT: Went through the same process you did and I'm all good to go. I was able to apply the OTA update after rooting it and then re-rooted it.
so how exactly did you root you perma root your phone again after ota.
i have perma root right now, its pre-ota, i do want to install ota though.. would i have to go back and do the manual perma-root with the "ota" files now instead of the other ones. im just confused and want to clear this up before i do anything stupid. thanks!

You can't accept OTA updates when you are rooted.
I see, but only used temp root with visionary
is that going to affect something?
Or what are my options to get a hold of updates in the future, a costum rom instead? I do kinda like the stock rom, just without stock apps
anyone?
Once again, if you are rooted, it doesnt matter how, you CANNOT accept ota update.
If you deleted something you shouldnt have, then restore the backup to that, or do a factory reset and re-root.
Ok i just figures since it was TEMProot that it didn't matter. Tnx for the reply, tried the factory default option (no luck), is there any place where I can get the Stock firmware to re-flash the phone?
Or would anyone in here recommend another rom ? Tons of custom roms, as I can tell.
Thread moved in Desire HD General.
go here and youll find your rom that you need,
you need the ones that are "RUU_Ace_HTC_WWE" in the file name, as these are what we call World Wide Editions
Thank you very much.
Just to make sure I do not **** something up, what are the steps i should follow, to install the rom?
This is what I did: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=888109
Got the same problem -- some time ago I removed some "useless" apps from my /system/app folder, and when 1.72 update was released I wasn't able to install it in any way (I was trying to follow this guide). I restored the missing apps, and then everything went fine using the guide mentioned above!
Hope this helps.

Sorry but that ain't correct... You *can* update your phone if you're rooted, the main problem is that root will be gone after update. The best solution is to *always* reject OTA updates provided by HTC and wait until devs here have found a safe way to update your device without losing root privileges.
Thank you
Thank you all, it gave perfectly sense since I'm quite happy with the stock firmware, i'll stick with this. The root is not so necessary for me at least for now
I'm glad it was corrected that visionary did not remove the ability for OTA, that was also what I've read before used it.

update keeps failing ?

hey, right im on 2.3.2
build number 3.0.A.2.184
and rooted
it keeps telling me theres an update avail for 2.3.3
but when i download and try install it always fails
and i dont know why? lol
any help?
have you removed some bloat ware?
If you have rooted with gingerbreak and removed any bloatware or other stock apps it won't update. Then you have to flash the UK generic 1.84 (2.3.2) and without removing any bloatware/apps root with gingerbreak and then update OTA.
If you rooted with a modded system.img flashed after you unlocked your bl, then stop and don't try again it will brick your phone for sure if it installs corectly. You will be able to recover from that, but with a broken radio.
I take it's the first
Regards Dousan...
See here for all the apks that came with the phone. Try reinstalling the missing ones otherwise you will have to reflash 2.3.2 to get back what you are missing. Reflashing will wipe your phone so backup anything you dont want to loose before doing it Then just do as Dousan says, root then nothing else then use the ota update to keep root on 2.3.3.
i thought that might be it
yeah i have removed bloatware so thatll be it
my bootloader is still locked aswell

Root, OTA, Market update

Hi guys, after a 6 months period with HTC Wildfire S, i decided it was time to upgrade my device, so here i am, a newbie Nexus S user.
The first things i did with my new toy were unlocking the bootloader, gaining root permissions and installing CWM.
But i noticed that Market isn't updating, it's stuck to THIS version (i think it's 2.13)
Has this anything to do with root and cwm? Or it's just a matter of time and i'll eventually get the update?
Same thing with firmware: at the moment i'm running 2.3.3: looking for updates, and even using the *#*#checkin#*#* code, provided the same result: no FOTA available. Is this due to the root+cwm or i just need to wait?
I know this has already be discussed in the faq, but i find them quite confusing.
I mean, i know i could do a manual update, but i'd like to know whether if i'll ever receive a fota update or if i've lost this chance after root.
Q: I'm rooted with Clockwork and can't install the OTA! I updated to 2.3.1 and lost root! What gives?
most of the time, official OTAs will not install through custom recoveries because of their tendency to break root or restore things like the stock recovery. Also if you've made any modifications to the system files such as replacing the default Mms.apk(messaging) with the custom Black Mms.apk found in the Themes & Apps section, or deleted any .odex files from the system partition, it will not install. The easiest way to update to 2.3.1 is to flash a custom rom such as one of the custom ROMs or use the 2.3.1 Stock NANDROID backup found in the development section. And yes, 2.3.1 "broke root." To regain it, simply follow the steps in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=884499 (All credit goes to the original author(s) of the linked thread!). The aforementioned procedure is only needed on the Stock Nandroid Backup, not any of the custom ROMs.

Thanks in advance for the answers!
There is no update due to the root, i advice you to manually update your phone to the latest version 4.0.3 using cwm, after that root again. finally you will have rooted ics on your nexus s.
uhm, you say i won't receive updates.
FAQ says most of the time i won't receive them.
THIS thread says i will receive them.
I am confused.
from what I can make sense of, it sounds like you should be getting updates. The FAQ you posted says that if you try to install one of the official OTA updates through CWM, it will fail most of the time.
i don't know how reliable that "checkin" trick is, and it may depend on your carrier as well.
if you've already rooted your device, then i would just flash one of the custom roms, you won't want to go back to the OTA after...
Root/cwm recovery/unlocked boot loader etc has nothing at all to do with your device receiving the ota update notification

Ok, finally tonight something started to move.
I received a message saying "A software update is available. Reboot the device to begin the installation" or something like that.
I rebooted and a CWM screen appeared, saying that the update could not be installed due to problems with the signature, sorry i can't remember word by word.
So... how can i know what the update was? I tried to browse the root folder in search for a .zip, but with no success. Any clue?

If you had 2.3.3 the update was probably the 2.3.6 and after that you would have received the 4.0.3 update....anyway from what I remember the version of the ota update is showed in the notification bar...isn't it?!

1. I assume it was the a step up from 2.3.3 to a max of 2.3.6 as OTA updates to 4.0.3 are currently on hold due to battery drain issue
2. your OTA install is failing because you have custom recovery (CWM) but the OTA updates require the stock recovery (3e)
if you really really want to install OTA updates, you gonna have to go back to stock recovery (do a nand restore, hope you have one) then flash the OTA updates for your device

Question about OTA updates

I am, unfortunately, running on MF3 firmware still and have my phone rooted and "customized" (ie I have Titanium backup blocking a few files). I'd like to be able to take the OTA update so I can update my firmware which is still pretty outdated (Android 4.2.2).
What do I need to do in order to be able to take the OTA update and what is the best way to proceed? Will the most recent FW version allow me to obtain root permissions or do I need to do something "fancy" like use survival mode in SuperUserSU?
Let me know the best way to proceed when you get the chance. Thanks!

If you have modified or deleted any system files the ota will not work. The latest version, nl1, is rootable with towelroot. If the ota doesn't work then I'd flash the nb1 tar file in Odin, see the general forum, and then ota from there.

I'm sure I have at least frozen some of those files using titanium backup . . . What's the best way to handle it? Do a backup of my TB settings, unfreeze everything, then try to get the OTA update? I haven't even been prompted for an OTA in months and I'm assuming it's because I currently have root and have frozen some of those files . . . Do I need to remove root in order to get the OTA prompt or is it likely a result of me freezing files?
Thanks for your help!

I'm not sure why you haven't gotten the prompt but it's not because of root. Try unfreezing the apps. Make a backup first

If you try to OTA with root, it will get to about 30% and then fail because the update checks for root if it's anything like the at&t update. I suggest unrooting and going back to 100% stock before trying any OTA updates.
I have posted a guide here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3-att/general/how-to-restore-device-status-to-t2832880
I know it's for the GS3, but should also work on the GS4.
You guys are awesome. Sounds like this is plenty of information to get started. Thanks for your help!
