i modified the build.prop in /system as per the readio mod thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116884
and added the following at the end of the file
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=10
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=8
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=1
ro.ril.htcmaskw1.bitmask=4294967295
ro.ril.htcmaskw1=14449
ro.ril.hsupa.category=6
then when i rebooted i noticed that when using data i'm seeing H instead of 3G
is this normal?
what is the H using, my network (Windmobile) only uses 3G and not 2G, and data is on 3G only (aws network)
i'm wondering if this will cause me data roming, or is it 3G but the letter just changed
thanks
sorry i thought i was in the Q&A section,
mod please move to Nexus Q&A
In fact the "H" is what I considered as Normal. It is the top mobile network speed. I have used other Android phones so far (Milestone and Galaxy S) and both show the following symbols related to mobile data connection (from lower to higher speed):
* G for GPRS. up to 128 kbps
* E for EDGE up to 236.8 kpbs
* 3G for UMTS Data Connection up to 2 Mbps
* H for HDSPA up to 7.2 Mbps (aka 3.5G)
On my stock Nexus S phone I only see G or 3G symbol, which can mean it is not using HDSPA mode (though my Network supports it) or it is using HDSPA but the symbol stays the same. I might run some speed tests to check it out ...

I did some searching around..but I couldn't really find much on this topic..
I have a custom ROM, I believe it's called Timor.9, and the only thing that bothers me is the H. Is there any way I can just have it say 3G again. I tried installing a cab from the show off your screenshots thread that had the 3G icon, but I'm still stuck with H. Is there something I'm missing?
Thank You
After some messing around in Advanced Config I found it.
It was 'Disable HSDPA Icon' I believe, for reference to others wondering.
Are you just trying to change the icon or are you actually trying to get rid of the HSDPA? HSDPA is definately faster than 3G, that's why you see it in custom ROMs. The chefs activate this hidden feature to improve data transfer speeds.

Thanks
Start > Utilities > Adv. Config > Data Connections > HSDPA icon - Disabled > Soft Reset
I've been wondering about this myself. I flashed The Cell ROM AT&T V1 and now V2 and I noticed the 3G was gone. I had no idea what the H was even for but my signal was great and data transfer was also very good so...just a curiosity

Well if I go disable the icon as shown through Advanced Config...will that get rid of that increased speed? And I'm on T-Mobile, is their whole 3G network HSDPA, because it seems unlikely my area would receive the upgrade so soon..
HSDPA = up to 42 Mbit/s on the downlink and 84 Mbit/s on the uplink
3D = up to 14.0 Mbit/s on the downlink and 5.8 Mbit/s on the uplink

don't be picky - the H tells you the mobile network you have connected to is HSDPA-enabled instead of the slower 3G. I would only start complaining if I was meant to connect to the network on 3G/HSDPA but kept getting an E or G instead

wrong! hsdpa is a subset of 3g. its also called 3.5g on gsm networks and on these phones it only has a max downlink of 7.2mbit. the 3g refers to umts. on gsm it produces less. its legacy on gsm. just like gprs (2g) is legacy to edge ("2.5g" as its dubbed by apple). you will only see an "h" or an "e" because they are they higher speeds at any time. and if youre like att who thinks its better to see hspa as 3g then you can change hklm\software\oem\ril\enablehsdpaicon to 0.
To be really clear here, all you're doing is changing the icon, nothing else. To actually enable and disable HSDPA and/or 3G in the radio requires other changes.
AT&T (and probably lots of other carriers) ship the ROM in such a way that the icon calls "3G" and "HSDPA" the same thing, probably because your average consumer has no clue what either mean, they just want "3G" because they saw it on an ad. AT&T's ROM has HSDPA enabled by default (and why wouldn't it?)
I have a question regarding the HSDPA on the TMOUS HD2. I used a Diamond back in Germany and when I was in an area with HSDPA reception it was indicated by a "H" in the taskbar. Now I am using the HD2 in Baltimore. From what I`ve read there should be HSDPA available arround here (especially since I am in Downtown B`more) however I only get the 3G symbol in the taskbar. I have also been in DC over the weekend and it was the same only 3G. But I am quite sure they have the HSDPA network available there. Does that mean my HD2 doesn`t get the faster HSDPA speeds at all?
I did a speed test using mobilespeedtest.com and IE.8 teethered WiFi connection on a Windows 7 system. My results in Downtown Baltimore are: "Your speed: 1428.571 Kbps Your latency: 0.561 seconds Transferred 100 KB in 0.56 seconds". With a 4 bars 3G symbol instead of a H in the taskbar. Aren't this speeds you would expect on a HSDPA network? I am running the original stock ROM on my HD2 by the way.
I am pretty sure most carriers use 3G with hspda enhancements, aka 3.5g, which would allow the speed above 3G's cap (364 kbps). As far as why your phone states H instead of 3G, it is dependent on the phone and icon set your phone uses. Some roms will show 3G and others will show H.
where do you find the HSPDA settings? I know they were somewhere but I can't find them!
I think the 3G/HSDPA is weird on the HD2. I can sit in one place and watch it change from Edge to HSDPA without moving the phone (and sometimes a random 3g will show up).
It definitely sounds like you have HSDPA since those are some nice speeds. Mine says 'H' and I get around 780kbps, so you're double that. As long as you have a fast data transfer (and you do) I wouldn't worry =)

I was in Las Vegas Convention recently, and witnessed the power of HSPA+.
HOLY CRAP. Why can't we have that speed ALL over the world?
I was always under the impression 3G was better than H. Perhaps it's a good thing then that mine's usually H then! Where does E fit into the speed scale?
E = Edge. the slowest.
actually GPRS is even slower than EDGE
if i remember EDGE = 500kbps
GPRS = 360kbps
GRPS = 2G
EDGE = 2.5G (sorta)
3G = 3G
H (HSDPA) = 3.5G
Anyone noticed the data icon is an H instead of a 3 while using the nordic 2.1 Firmware?
I think that means you're currently using HSPDA as your connection instead of 3G
Sent from my X10i using Tapatalk
hmm thats interesting. never did it before. always displayed 3, and sometimes E or G something like that when it went down to GSM.
Obviously the H idicates a HSPA network.
i was abit confused myself to see the "H" but as far as i know now it is actually faster the 3g so if thats correct then its a good thing
In order of speed:
G - GPRS (56Kbit/s)
E - Edge (236.8 kbit/s)
3G - UMTS (384 kbit/s)
H - HSPA (7.2 mbit/s - 14.4 mbit/s)
So yes: YIPPPIIII
The X10 always had HSDPA, it used to always run on it just never had the icon as 1.6 struggles to display it as it was never designed to be used on HSDPA handsets.
Just a bit of a curious observation. Coming from the US almost 2 years ago, while connected to a HSPA network, my android would always display the 'H' icon, whether in a state of active download and/or uploading or not. Occasionally, it would fall back to an E logo for the EDGE network within buildings, etc.
Now, here in NL, over the course of 2 years I've subscribed to two different providers and both exhibited similar behavior (KPN and Vodafone for you Dutchies). Within good reach of the towers, my phone shows the 3G icon, but when actively downloading or uploading something, as exhibited by the up and down arrows, the H icon is immediately displayed, and when active DL/UL stops, the H icon changes back to the 3G icon.
Is this constant switching a network-capacity measure taken by the providers here to limit the number of devices communicating with the faster (H/H+) equipment?
It may depend on the type of UTMS. It may be DC-HSPA down to another form. It could just be your ROM too.

Depends on the network you use. If your network supports UMTS (displayed 3G in android) then your connection falls back on UMTS to save power. If the bandwidth is needed it will ramp up to HS(D)PA (H) or HSPA+ (H+). Some networks just have HSDPA and HSPA+ and no UMTS, therefore they will jump between H and H+ depending on network load.

Are you sure about this? First, I thought HSDPA and HSPA+ are UMTS enhancements, and at their core, are still UMTS-based. Secondly, I've not seen it indicated that H or H+ would require more power than UMTS which has not been enhanced or upgraded to the newer UMTS implementations.

At the core it is still UMTS. Hence it jumps a millisecond to UMTS if it is switching between HSPA+ and HSDPA. The UMTS 'core' is there, but not made available by my carrier to be used by my phone.
The UMTS/HSDPA power draw comparison is my experience: on HSPDA data i lose about 35-40% a night (=8h) while I do maybe 10-15% on UMTS (other provider)
Ever since i got my Z (6002), i've had a problem on the 2G (Edge) connection. HSPA/HSDPA was fine, but the 2G connection was virtually non-existent. I always get page time outs and no indication of loading, no matter what app or browser i use.
i was forced to leave the network settings to wcdma only. however, this is not practical since once i get to 2G only location (yes, those places still exist ) i lose all signal until i set network to wcdma/gsm or gsm only.
So after a few days experimenting with the build.prop, if any of you guys have the same problem or want to boost your 2G/3G connections, this is what i did:
ROOT REQUIRED! (be sure you have atleast a rudimentary know how of editing the build.prop)
ADD/Append the following at the end of the build.prop, save and reboot:
Code:
#signal tweak
ro.ril.enable.3g.prefix=0
ro.ril.enable.dtm=0
ro.ril.hep=0
ro.ril.hsxpa=5
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.hsupa.category=9
ro.ril.hsdpa.category=36
Haven't done a formal speed test, but my 2G internet is now working and WCDMA mode feels snappier.
Regarding HSXPA=5. still testing with different values. 5 for my XZ and network seems to provide the snappiest page load.
ro.ril.enable.dtm=0 << this seemed to be the main fix for my 2G/EDGE problem.
I'll let you folks do the speed testing. Just remember that some settings are network dependent and mileage will vary.
Some explanations:
HSUPA >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-Speed_Uplink_Packet_Access
HSDPA >> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hsdpa
HSXPA >> [0=UMTS] [1=HSDPA only] [2=HSDPA & HSUPA]
ro.ril.enable.dtm
Enable "dual transfer mode" on EDGE networks; requires different GPRS class setting. Only set this to 1 if your network allows simultaneous transfer of Circuit switched (CS) voice and Packet switched (PS) data over the same radio channel (ARFCN).
Seems to be having a positive effect on my Z. Will test further, but there does appear to be less dropouts.

I noticed that too. And for some strange reason, even my WiFi connection at work improved.
Also noticed a marked reduction in heatups during heavy internet use.

Same as x10. But will experience battery drainage due to this.
NOTE: It also increases 3G speed.

really seems to speed up data transfer a little bit.
that being said, i have a feeling that my battery also drains a lot faster.
Same here. Net connections on 2G and 3G are faster, but battery drain while using data connections is faster too.

Hi viper001
Want to ask if you are now on the same numbers of the Tweak or have you settled out others that are "Better"....don't missunderstand please, I'am not so deep inside....but I'really like your Tweak and what you've done to my 2 and 3g Connections....way Better!!!
Still using the same settings. I tried changing hsxpa settings but itkeeps messing up my 2g.
Different providers don't react the same way so it's up to you to see which one works best.

Dude this is Sony Xperia Z not SAMSUNG ... I don't recommend messing with it as it might damage your phone, different settings can pretty much mess it up
Can this boost the wifi speed?
No. ril build prop changes have no effect on the wifi transfer speeds. Get better internet or router.
Pls can yhu guys help mhe?? My xperia z doesn't get netwrk in wcdma mode... Am in nigeria.. It supports my band
