Just wanted to point out that this step is OPTIONAL. This will allow you to acquire root with your default, stock ROM. However, if you intend to install a custom ROM (Cyanogenmod, Liberated, etc.) then you should just skip this step entirely and go straight to installing the ROM of your choice.

Sweet write up! If I'm not busy this weekend, I may take a jab at it. Thanks duder.

Finally, a well done step by step writeup, that pulls all of the pieces together along with the necessary links.
Well done.
Thanks

Thank you for the comments guys!!
@drumist thanks for pointing that out. this was explained in the guide i made on other forums. fixed it here now
@cHarley04 the download for 2.2 RUU is linked in the Aria Superthread, which is linked in the first step on how to S-Off
maybe i will include the direct link for simplicity

I was just about to do this and went to alpharevs sight and the windows download link is replaced with, "windows version is under review, sorry". Noooo! I'm off today, kids and wife are asleep and my little little aria almost saw the future. Oh well, next weekend hopefully that puppys up and running. I know there's a Linux download link but I like sticking to what I always use, sucky windows.

got excited at the first sight
but...

Yeah I would have no idea how to run a virtual linux instance so I could do this... hopefully AlphaRev gets the windows version cleared soon, so I can root and use wifi hotspot.

open up the clockworkrecovery rar with winrar or a program like it and youll see a file that says recovery.img that's the file you'll want to extract into the adb folder with the fastboot.exe

so guys is this still for only 2.1 users or can you already have the 2.2.2 installed

This is specifically for, 2.2.2
The first step in the process, is to upgrade to 2.2.2 if you don't have it.
If you already have 2.2.2, you just skip that step.

if my wife took the OTA update from AT&T and it upgraded her phone to 2.2.2 which put the security in place preventing you from rooting this will allow me to undo that?
sorry for the extra question

I'm a knucklehead sandwich!!!! I was missing the fastboot.exe!! It was late and I was a few beers deep. All good now. S-off woooohooo!!!!!

@Tommyguns, glad you got iy M8
@bkeaver, yes the guide is for factory phones with 2.2(same as OTA update), and for those who want to upgrade from 2.1 using the 2.2 update RUU.
pretty sure it says that in the guide, but i will check and make adjustments for clarity if needed
Edited first post. also please take special attention to anything posted in RED

[Full Guide] All in one - De-branding, rooting and flashing for all HBOOT versions

Ok, basically this is a complete guide in which it explains (in high detail, excellent for noobs) how to:
De-brand your phone(Downgrade the HBOOT version down to 1.01.0001)
Root (Using Revolutionary S-OFF and SuperOneClick)
Flash a new ROM (In the guide we will be using Cyanogenmod 7.1, also provided)
The good thing about the guide is that almost all, if not all the files and software are provided in the pack. It also includes the guide itself. If you want the simple text version of the guide, just ask and I will upload it. You will need 7zip or WinRAR to extract the pack with all the files in it. The guide is designed for Windows 7 and Vista although XP might work (I'm not sure though, and if you have Linux you're probably a dev and can find the files on the internet yourself ) If you have any questions feel free to ask
Head over here to download the pack.
EDIT: Some people have requested the guide online. So here it is:
How to de-brand, root and flash your phone!
Here is a dictionary if I use any abbreviations you don't understand.
http://goo.gl/nYk5v
BY ROOTING YOU WILL KILL YOUR WARRANTY, I TAKE NO RESPONSIBILITY IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE (MAKE IT SO THAT IT DOESNT WORK AT ALL)
The following will delete all your apps and contacts as you will factory restore it. If you want to keep your contacts, back them up to your SIM card now. If you want to back up your apps so you can restore them once you have flashed, I suggest using an app called "Titanium Backup" on the Android Market if you don’t want to lose your apps.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Pre-requisites:
1. Go into the zip you just downloaded, and extract it using a program like WinRAR or 7zip to somewhere you will remember like your desktop. I will be referring to this folder by "the package"
2. Remove your Micro SD card from your phone. Then insert the Micro SD card into a card reader, and insert the card reader into your computer. Or, if you don't have a card reader, mount your phone as storage. Either way, when you can see the SD card on the computer, format the SD card to FAT32 format (Right click on SD card, format and then select FAT32 and format).
3. On your computer, install the latest version of HTC Sync and then uninstall it. Also uninstall any programs that might try and send something to your phone like DoubleTwist. Do not uninstall anything else.
4. On your phone go to Settings > Connect to PC > Default connection type and press "Charge only". Then untick "Ask Me". Then go back to Settings > Applications > Development and tick "USB Debugging".
5. Connect your phone to your computer with a USB Cable.
6. Boot into the HBOOT (or bootloader) menu by turning off your phone and then holding down the buttons POWER and VOLUME DOWN together at the same time. If it shows the HTC screen, retry until it shows the HBOOT screen with the Androids on skateboards. To exit this screen after Step 8, using the VOLUME DOWN and VOLUME UP keys to go up and POWER to select, go into FASTBOOT and then select REBOOT.
7. Your computer will search for software and will not find it. So go to Device Manager on your computer, double click on Other devices (if Android 1.0 is not already there, which it should be). Right click on Android 1.0 and click "Update Driver Software" and click "Browse my computer for driver software". Click on "Browse" and then browse to the "Android USB Driver" in the package we downloaded in step 1. Then click "Ok" and then "Next". Once this is done, proceed to step 8.
8. If your HBOOT number is 1.01.0001, skip to step 17 in ROOTING. If it is 1.01.0002, proceed to step 9 in DE-BRANDING.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DE-BRANDING
9. Go into the folder you extracted in step 4 and go into the folder "buzzdowngrade". Run the step1.bat file without running as administrator. It may give you the following errors:
'adb' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
and/or
'GoldCardTool.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.
Ignore these errors (Hopefully they won't come up though) . What is most important is if it says " Step 1 is done, continue with Step 2. " somewhere.
10. Then mount your phone like you did in step 2 although this time you don’t need to format it.
11. Right-click on the Gold Card tool and click "Run as administrator". Then click Get CID. If it says "Failed to get CID", untick and then tick "USB Debugging" in Settings > Applications. If it still fails, re-do the first sentence of Step 4. Copy the CID to your clipboard. Do not close this window.
12. Go to http://goo.gl/ZGsG4. Paste your CID into the box where it says "SD Card Serial". This is not the serial number in Step 11. Fill out the rest of the form and click "Download Goldcard".
13. Go back to the Gold Card tool window, and click "Load GoldCard.img". Select the file you downloaded in Step 11. Then click "Patch MMC". You can close the window once it finishes.
14. Once it finishes, mount your phone as storage. You should have gotten used to this by now!
15. Double click step2.bat. Once this finishes, you have now successfully de-branded your phone! We are not finished rooting or flashing, yet.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ROOTING
16. On your phone go to Settings > About phone > Phone Identity. Somewhere in there you will find a serial number for your phone like HTXXETDXXXXX. Copy this serial no. down into a notepad document.
17. Go to http://goo.gl/xRSOH. Click "Download for Windows" and extract the file to your desktop. Or, there is already a working Revolutionary inside the package- you can just do Step 18 with the files in the Revolutionary folder.
18. A form to receive a beta key will now appear. Select "Windows" as the operating system obviously, "HTC Wildfire" and "1.01.0001” because it will be the only option. In the "Serial number" text box, enter the serial number you got in Step 16. Then click "Generate key". You will now receive your beta key. If it is not already highlighted, highlight it and press CTRL + C on your keyboard. This will copy the beta key to your clipboard.
19. Go into the folder that you extracted in step 16. Right-click on revolutionary or revolutionary.exe file and click "Run as administrator". If it cannot find your device, close the window and try again.
20. It may ask if you want it to flash Clockworkmod Recovery. I suggest this as the stock recovery isn't that good. But it is not necessary and you may choose not to if you wish.
21. You should successfully have S-OFF! Boot into the HBOOT menu like you did in Step 6 and check it says Revolutionary S-OFF at the top of the screen. Reboot your phone back to normal, also taught in Step 6.
22. Your phone should still be on "Charge only", with an unticked "Ask me" box and a ticked "USB Debugging" box in the Applications menu. If it isn't, re-do Step 4.
23. Go into the package you downloaded in Step 1. Go into the SuperOneClick folder and right-click the SuperOneClick or SuperOneClick.exe file and click "Properties". Go into the "Compatibility" tab and tick "Run this program in compatibility mode for:” If it isn't already selected, select "Windows XP (Service Pack 3) from the dropdown menu. Then click "Ok".
24. Right-click that same file, and click "Run as administrator".
25. When the program starts and your phone is connected to your computer, click "Root". If the program stops responding, repeat Step 24. If it stops responding again, try double-clicking the file instead of right-clicking in Step 24. Do not “Shell root” as this means you root your phone for one start-up, and when you shut down the phone it will be un-rooted again. Plus, we can always un-root (although not in this guide, there are many un-rooting guides, I can give you some at the bottom of this guide).
26. If it asks to install Busybox, click yes.
27. Once it finishes, you are should be rooted! It should ask at the end to check if your phone is rooted. Click yes, and if it says TRUE, you are rooted! Another way to check is to look for "Superuser" in your App Drawer.
EDIT: People who are having issues with SuperOneClick freezing etc, use the following method:
1. Download this zip.
2. Flash it in ClockWorkMod (HBOOT>Recovery>Install Zip From SD Card>Choose Zip from SD Card
3. Reboot.
You're rooted without SuperOneClick!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FLASHING A NEW ROM
We will now flash a new ROM. I recommend Cyanogenmod as it has Android 2.3, live wallpapers (I know some of you want this) and doesn't have many bugs (problems).
28. Go to the Cyanogenmod website. Navigate to "Devices" and click on "HTC Wildfire" and the click on "Stable mod". Download the zip file at the top of the list. Do not extract it. Or, alternatively, the current (as of 22/11/2011) version (7.1.0.1) of Cyanogenmod 7 is in the package. You can use this instead.
29. Move the zip file you downloaded in Step 28 to the root of your SD card. Google what this means if you don’t understand.
30. Boot into the HBOOT menu. You should now be an expert at this! Go down and select "Recovery"
31. It should go into Revolutionary Clockworkmod Recovery 4.0.1.4. Select "Backup and restore" from the list navigating with the volume up, down and pressing on the trackball to select. If you choose the wrong section, press back on your phone's soft key. Then click "Backup" from the list. The phone should then back up all the data. Once it finishes backing up, if it hasn’t gone to the main menu already, press the back soft key to get to the main recovery menu. Then select “wipe data/factory reset”, “yes – delete all user data” and then once that finishes, select “wipe cache partition” and once again “yes – wipe cache”. If it asks what cache you want to wipe, select all of them.
32. Once this finishes, click “install zip from SD card” and select the zip file you moved in Step 29. Then, once again click “yes” once prompted.
33. Then, once it finishes, select “reboot system now”. It will then boot into Android 2.3!
The Android Market is not installed on your phone by default. Go to Step 34 if you want the Android Market on your phone. Otherwise, if you don’t want it, you have successfully flashed your phone!
34. Move the gapps zip file from the package to the root of your SD card. Do not extract it. Your phone should still be mounted, but if it isn’t mount it.
35. Reboot into the HBOOT menu, and then go into the Recovery menu.
36. This time you do not need to delete all your data or cache. Just “install zip from SD card”, select the gapps zip file, and, when prompted, click yes. Reboot and your phone should have the latest Android Market. From here you can download Gmail and all the usual Google Apps.
Your phone is now rooted and flashed! You also have the latest Android Market.
The End

THEN, use revolutionary. The above link downgrades the HBOOT.
i'd tried..
ok, i did the STEP1.bat, gold card and step2.bat but the result is the same..
let me explain in a bit details..
1) step1.bat = when i started the program, mostly this came out
" 'adb' is not recognised as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"
2) goldcard=ok.. but i have to use cardreader.. i tried to use cables but when i tried to patch it this came out,
"an error occur Object reference is not set to an instance of an object"
but with cardreader, i think its ok.
3) step2.bat = its started like step2.bat BUT when i press enter, it runs for like 1 second and close itself..
i'm using a windows 7.

Ok, on goldcard tool did you mount your phone as storage before getting the CID and loading the goldcard.img and patching it? If that doesn't work, you can always try taking the micro SD card out of the phone and putting it into a Micro SD- SD converter and putting that in your SD slot (if your computer has one).
Also, did you format the SD to FAT32 before running GoldCardTool? Format it fully, not just the quick format option in Windows 7 (If you did that).

After using the Goldcard Tool and if it finishes successfully without any errors, try mounting the phone as "Charge Only" instead of Storage in Step 14. Tell me if it works then.
ron, do you have any success yet?

You can try, but personally I have no experience and would recommend using the method in the guide. I rooted & flashed two Wildfires (one my own and the other my friend's) using the method in the guide. So I recommend using that. I tried uploading it to megaupload but it failed and other sites have a size limit. Dropbox was the only choice I had. I can possibly send the file to you though, just PM me your email.

I also recommend using this method to s-off and root rather than htc's tool. Besides it says on htcdev.com that to use the tool requires a hboot update which will most likely be .0002 or higher we don't know yet.

Yes. My friend's HTC Wildfire had 1.01.002 and I used that to write the guide.

[U8800] [How To] Root, Install ClockworkMod + Remove Bundled Apps from Official 2.3.5

Please note this is based on the 28.12.11 Final Release. I have tried and tested this myself so I know it works fine.
Firstly if you are not already on the lastest Official 2.3.5 Final then update to it before trying the following.
Rooting the U8800 with SuperOneClick v2.3.3
1) Dial: *#*#2846579#*#*
2) Go to projectmenu > background settings > log settings > log switch > set Log on
3) Reboot Phone
4) Switch USB Debugging ON
5) Download SuperOneClick v2.3.3
6) Plug your U8800 into your computer but DO NOT mount SD Card.
7) Run SuperOneClick and press the ROOT Button, and let it do its thing (say yes to install drivers if asked).
8) Your phone should now be Rooted.
9) You can now go back and turn logging off if you want.
Removing First Set of Bundled Apps (Part 1)
1) Install ES File Explorer or File Expert.
2) Install Remount.
3) Using Remount mount the system/app folder as RW.
4) Navigate to System/App using ES File Explorer or File Expert and remove the following:
--- UpdaterSolution.apk
--- SocialExt.apk
--- Service-MultiSNS.apk
--- GenieWidget.apk
5) That should have removed the Social App, Stock Android Weather App and the Twitter and Facebook Feeds.
Removing Second Set of Bundled Apps (Part 2)
I have edited the stock cust.img file which will remove the following:
- APK Batch Installer
- Documents to Go
- File Manager
- Huawei Keyboard
- Swype
- Notepad
1) Download the modified cust.img - HERE
2) Copy the cust.img to your SD Card from your Computer.
3) Using Remount mount the .cust_backup/image folder as RW.
4) Using ES File Explorer or File Expert move the cust.img from the SD Card to .cust_backup/image and replace existing cust.img (you may have have to enable "Show Hidden Files" in your File Manager.
5) Reboot your phone and the apps above should be removed.
You should now have a much cleaner U8800 with most of the rubbish removed.
If you know of other apps that can be removed from the system/app folder let me know and I will add them to the list above!
Installing ClockworkMod 5.5.0.4 on your U8800
1) On your U8800 go to Settings > Applications > Untick Fast Boot (if ticked)
2) Download Blefish's ClockworkMod from HERE (ClockworkMod v5.5.0.4)
3) Copy the recovery.img from computer to your SD Card.
4) Using Remount mount the .cust_backup/image folder as RW.
5) Using ES File Explorer or File Expert copy the recovery.img from the SD Card to .cust_backup/image (replacing existing)
6) ClockworkMod v5.5.0.4 will now be Installed on your U8800
7) Turn on your U8800 while holding [VOL+] to load ClockworkMod Recovery (keep holding [Power] + [VOL+] until ClockworkMod Loads)
Note: if you have a Synaptics screen you have to use the [VOL] buttons to navigate and [Power] button to select an option.
Missing the Torch that comes with CM7 and MIUI?
I have found a great very simple Torch App in the Market which is also Ad Free.
It uses your LED Flash like the others and works perfect for me: Simple Torch
The App is also Free so will not cost you a penny!
If you know of an alternative let me know.
Modified Huawei 2.3.5 Stock Launcher with Icon Backgrounds Removed by skifyr123

build.prop File Tweaks and Edits
You can edit your system/build.prop file using most File Managers, I use Root Explorer and just hold finger down on the build.prop file and choose "Open in Text Editor" and edit away. You will need to mount the "System" folder as R/W using the Remount App.
Enable sending MMS Messages over WiFi (if Data Disabled)
Change:
Code:
ro.config.hw_always_allow_mms=false
To:
Code:
ro.config.hw_always_allow_mms=true
Enable "Call Reject Menu" in Settings > Call Settings
Change:
Code:

To:
Code:
ro.config.hw_camera_hdr=true
If you are not sure what HDR is then read up on it HERE
Downgrade from 2.3.5 back to 2.2.2
1) Download U8800 V100R001C00B138SP04 (Overseas General) Android 2.2.2 from HERE.
2) Extract the "dload" folder and copy it (along with its contents) to the ROOT of the SD Card.
3) Turn on your U8800 while holding [VOL-] and [VOL+] and the Android 2.2.2 install should start.
4) Once finished you should be back to 2.2.2.
5) If you phone does not boot correctly power on phone while holding [VOL+] to boot into recovery and Reset to factory defaults.
6) Delete the "dload" folder from the SD Card.

I haven't had any problems so far, what apps would I see problems in?
I have problems with instaling 20111222-cm-7.1.0-u8800-Geno-en via this recovery. Instal zip from SD > choose zip > 20111222-cm-7.1.0-u8800-Geno-en > yes > finding, opening and then the recovery restarts itself. This happens also with ICS demo.
Did I do somenthing wrong?
EDIT:
After some reboots, now it is working. Thank you.
Awesome tutorial! ill give it a go in few days! thank you man!
perfect guide!!
Great guide.. Will be expecting some custom rom based on official now..

After rooting, should I turn logging off again?
A small not: I had 1 small "problem": I had to install the drivers from SuperOneClick. Installing the drivers in Windows(7) did not work.
Otherwise this seems to work like a charm!
Thanks for the tutorial !
i follow ur nice instructions for rooting word by word 3 times but no good, after root and restart phone looses (unmount) my sd card ,no superuser and no root.My titanium backup and other root apps not working.
Some questions to clear any of my mis interpretations:
IN the rooting section of your post does Superoneclick run from your PC while android is connected to PC? (is that correct?)
And not mounting the SD card means not; turning on USB connection when prompted in notifications. Is that correct?
Pardon the newbieness questions

What about a Linux Live CD? Just an idea
SuperOneClick v2.3.1 doesn't seem to want to work on my Vista 64 bit PC. I've tried running it as administrator.
Any suggestions welcomed....
Edit.... correction...it helps extracting the zip file properly. Seems to have work.

This will show you how to FULLY unroot your evo to stock. S-ON *****(LOCKED OOW)*****
THIS ONLY WORKS IF YOU USED HTCDEV METHOD!!!!!
Please read thru this guide once or twice before actually taking steps !
Your phone MUST be on a stock sense rom so go get that installed now !
Download these files if you do not have them
ADB.exe http://d-h.st/Vsv
FastBoot.exe http://d-h.st/KB3
AdbWinApi.dll http://d-h.st/MJn
flash_image.zip http://themikmik.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=5377&stc=1&d=1327588554

PC36IMG_SuperSonic_GB_Sprint_WWE_4.67.651.3 http://d-h.st/n1U
Before you do anything else, your phone MUST be on a stock sense rom !
step #1 downgrading the misc partition
1.download the first three files and create a folder and call it android then move the downloaded files to the android folder.(you should have already have this setup when you rooted with HTCdev)
2.download and install (do not run) htc sync: http://www.mediafire.com/?cdcjs0ue8tne4cy
3.connect your phone to the pc via usb cable
4.we need to extract and then move the flash_image and the mtd-eng files on to the sd card. make sure that you do not put the extracted files in any folders. they need to be on the root of the card (very top level)
5.change the setting from disk to charge only, make sure that usb debugging is turned on, settings>apps>development>check usb debugging, and lastly make sure that fastboot is disabled, settings>apps>uncheck fastboot.
6.on your pc hold shift while right clicking on the android folder. select open command window here option.
7. in the command window type:
Code:
[B][I]adb shell
ok you should get # in the command window if not then something went wrong.
if you do get # then type:
Code:
cat /sdcard/flash_image > /data/flash_image
then:
Code:
chmod 755 /data/flash_image
and last:
Code:
/data/flash_image misc /sdcard/mtd-eng.img

download the 4.67 PC36IMG file and rename it by deleting everything but the PC36IMG part in the name. make sure not to add an extra zip as windows hides extensions.
move it to the root of the sd card that means on the top level of the card and not in any folders.
power off then press and hold power+vol down. this will take you to the bootloader. if you named the file right and it is on the root of the card then it will ask you to update. select yes.
before you reboot your phone double check your bootloader screen. at the top it should say locked and your hboot should be 2.18 with s-on. if that is what you see then congrats!!!!!!!!!! you are now unrooted!!!!!!!!!!!!

I've actually been dealing with this most of the day trying to unroot and go back 100% stock and have had no success. It was suggested elsewhere that I need to be on a stock rom? I'm dl'ing one now to try as I am currently on an ics rom.
yes you do need to be on a stock sense rom so download a stock sense rom, and then follow the guide

Where did you get it from, then?
It looks strikingly similar to this guide:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/526575-guide-unrooting-gingerbread-2-3-5-a.html
In fact, the inordinate number of exclamation points and the use of my command prompt screenshot makes me think it originated over there.

Are you running a rooted ROM? You need to have root access for this to work. Try typing "su" at the prompt and see if it changed to a #.

Hi, I know this is really out of date, but I have to send my phone back because the screen is cracked (inner touch screen) and I wanted the phone to be completely stock. I never rooted the phone. I only unlocked the bootloader. I found this thread hoping I could relock the bootloader to make it look like I never unlocked it in the first place. Of course once I reached Step 7, I don't get the # sign. I get the $ sign and I don't know what to do :/

This won't have S-Off or the better looking AIO Toolkit(sorry) would have it. The dev asked not to do such a thing.

Ya I think its a bit lame but guess they just don't want to deal with it or what ever.
Be wary of this... I followed the instructions TO THE T yet I believe this flashed a recovery to my phone that was not from the HoS. I had to Ruu to stock to fix it. Suppose I could have done something wrong... but nonetheless. Also, when I tried doing the recovery it opened my docs... I put the .img in there and then it said I needed to put it in ETv2/prog/zo so I did so and that's when bootloader froze up on me.
Re: [TOOL] HTC Everything Tool!
Fastboot is programmed to execute 'fastboot flash recovery recovery.img' it flashes it the only way you can via pc, although I will look into the problem and see if its on the software side!

Uh i think u just got a bad flash. it happens once in a while. Happened to me a few months ago. Had to RUU back to stock before flashing anything cuz fastboot commands wouldn't work. and i do everything by hand. not a fan of tools.

Ive checked over the batch file, there seems to be no problem, i also just flashed twrp on a friends phone and was successfull, maybe it was a bad flash!

Yeah, that must be it. No worries guys, like I said... I got it back. ^_~ I was just really scared thinking I screwed up the recovery partition or something because flashing the recoveries manually did nothing and when I tried to boot to recovery it would just go to a black screen. At that point I was unsure how to re-lock the phone without the recovery to flash my bootloader lock zip so I tried fastboot oem lock and though it gave me an error I saw that it was now "Relocked" and I was like.. "Oh crap, please RUU back to stock with stock recovery... PLEASE!" XD
Re: [TOOL] HTC Everything Tool!
Well glad it worked, I just flashed twrp recovery and everything went well, although I found minor hugs and fixed them, updating my tool to v2.5

Sorry to hear that. SuperCID looks a bit complicated. Pushing the files and rooting must be do-able.
Look like I'll have to wait a bit more then.
Thanks for the reply.

[3/31] Fix for KitKat Update Failing - Without ROOTING

WARNING: IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO START FROM STEP 1 AND FOLLOW EACH STEP EXACTLY HOW I HAVE WROTE IT THEN YOU WILL FAIL. THIS METHOD WORKS IF YOU CAN FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS.
IF YOU DID NOT RESTORE YOUR PHONE AND FOLLOW EACH STEP EXACTLY HOW I LISTED BELOW THEN DO NOT SAY THIS DOESN'T WORK FOR YOU.
Step 1. Follow @evilpotatoman 's guide below to restore your phone to MJ5 FIRST
Guide:
1) Download and install Heimdall from here for windows. You'll need this and this to avoid missing .dll file errors
2) Download the following files:
MI9_fix.img.ext4
sec_csc.zip
2400258.zip
Put sec_csc.zip and 2400258.zip on your external SD card
3) Download and install the MJ5 partitions. Use Odin to flash these files (match the file names with the different upload slots)AP_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipBL_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipCP_N900AUCUBMJ5.zipHLTE_USA_ATT_32G.pit
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
4) Now is the time to use Heimdall.
Reboot into Download Mode once Odin finishes.
Install the vcredist packages downloaded from step 1.
unzip the heimdall .zip file to c:/
go to c:/Heimdall Suite/Drivers and click on zadig.exe
click the middle menu button to select "Show All Devices"
from the dropdown, select MSM8960
click the "install driver" button.
you should see a success message
5) Navigate on your computer to c:/Heimdall Suite/ and open heimdall-frontend.exe.
IMPORTANT -- Go to the Utilities tab and click the "Detect" button
Go to the Flash tab on Heimdall, click Browse and select the HLTE_USA_ATT_32G.pit file downloaded from step 3
Click the 'add' button, then next to 'partition name' select system from the dropdown.
click the Browse button underneath the dropdown, and select the MI9_fix.img.ext4 image you downloaded from step 2.
6) Click Start. ***I usually check the 'No Reboot' box to prepare for booting into recovery
7) Heimdall and your Note will report a bad flash at around 95% -- but don't worry -- your system.img got uploaded Reboot directly into recovery mode.
8) Once in recovery, select "Choose update from external" in the recovery, and select the sec_csc.zip you downloaded earlier (did you remember to put that file on your external SD card?). This will install the CSC files and run the preload checkin so you don't FC all over the place
9) IMPORTANT--After flashing the sec_csc, the Note will reboot.
Try to catch it in time to reboot BACK into recovery
Once in recovery, select "Choose update from external" in the recovery, and select the 2400258.zip you downloaded earlier.
END OF MJ5 RESTORE GUIDE - CONTINUE BELOW
Step 2. YOU ARE NOW ON MJ5 BE SURE TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THE NB4 OTA UPDATE BEFORE CONTINUING!!!
Step 3. When you're finished the restore guide to MJ5 and updated to NB4 then delete any other files used from the restore guide so you don't mix them up and download the following 2 files:
1- Miata KitKat Fix v1
2- KitKat Ota ZipStep 4. Extract the Miata_KK_Fix_1.0.zip to the root of your BOTH your phone storage and your sd card. (make sure they are not in any folders!!!)
Step 5. Once both files in the Miata_KK_Fix_1.0.zip are extracted and copied to both your phone and the sd card... then reboot the phone.
VERY IMPORTANT TO REBOOT NOW
Step 6. Pick one of the follow options...
(Option A) - Wipes phone - I recommend this method
1. Rename 2400258.zip to update.zip and copy to EXTERNAL STORAGE (aka sd card)
UNPLUG USB CABLE BEFORE CONTINUING
2. Reboot into RECOVERY MODE (volume up + home) and select "Apply Update from external storage" and select your update.zip
3. It should start the update process and finish successfully! Enjoy!
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
(Option B) - Doesn't wipe phone
1. You are going to need an ADB Side loader and it can be found here.
2. Extract to directory C:\Mini-SDK
3. Rename 2400258.zip to update. (DO NOT NAME UPDATE.ZIP, JUST "update".)
4. Place "UPDATE" into the same folder as your ADB C:\Mini-SDK
5. Hold shift and right click in the folder to "Open command window here"
6. Reboot your phone into RECOVERY MODE (volume up + home)
7. Select "Apply update from ADB"
8. Plug phone into usb on PC
9. In your command window type "adb sideload update" without quotes and enjoy!
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
(Option C) - Untested
1. Settings, General, About, Software Update, Check for updates...
2. Download and install update
If you made it this far and it fails or gives you an error then you did something wrong. Start from step 1 restoring your phone to MJ5
Thanks @opsmgr3774 for the donation!
Thanks @Ciberious42 and @evilpotatoman and anyone else I forgot.
Q&A
1. Is this safe?
Yes it's using the same exploit from Root De La Vega to run a script that replaces the bad file that is stopping the OTA from installing.
What the script does:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount /system
rm /system/bin/mobicore-presetup.sh
cp /sdcard/mobicore-presetup.sh /system/bin
rm /sdcard/rldv.sh
2. It doesn't work for me!!!
Try it again from the very beginning and read step by step, slowly. Make sure you didn't miss anything! Download the files again also.

Im sure people would be a little more willing to try this is there was a little more info here.
What are these files fixing when flashed, how do i know that these good/ok files to flash that will not brick my device? Because you said it should work. Not nit picking or even saying that it doesnt work. BUT more info on what this is would be beneficial to everyone.

Well you're not flashing anything that isn't safe considering they're all the same files from different threads (that are safe) except for the script file in the miata fix zip that I made.

Yes i understand have used the Evilpotato mans process. I was reffering to the miata Fix. Just want to know what we are flashing. I am not a dev i dont know how to look at a file and see if it will work/harm a phone.

It can't harm anything do not worry. If you followed this guide exactly it will work. Worst case scenario is that you will have to start over again. All it does is copy the missing file back onto the phone so it no longer fails at 27% it's a simple 3 line script you can open it in notepad and see what it's doing if you like.
I hope that posting this is not bad form, as I don't mean to sound skeptical of the OP....
Has anyone tried this method and had success?

Yes! Me! Lol it's completely safe
This fix is failing. Error appears that the device is not using NB4 update.

Indeed
after MJ5 restore, I was able to run the RDLV script in order to replace the system file needed, Then I ran the OTA update from recovery for NB4, Upon reboot, I was then able to install the KK update NC2

It is part of the OP, the RDLV.sh file that you copy to the root of the internal storage. This is a script file that will replace the other .sh file on your system partition.

Thank you. I had done everything but the nb4 update and it failed so I of course panicked, then noticed TheChefSLC said they "ran" the script and wondered if I had missed a step. It's all squared away and fully updated now. It worked. Hooray.
This deserves a news page recommendation

I am getting a temporary error when trying to download the miata_kitkat fix. new link please
EDIT...It is working now. THanks
I can confirm this works. I just did it and I am now on 4.4.2 NC2. Thanks!!
This worked for me...
But I did have to use "(Option B) - Doesn't wipe phone", Option A did not work.
Now to wait for root...
