I just recently resigned with Telus on a three year contract that gives me unlimited data for $30/month. Apparently it was offered around Xmas for $15/month. The only restriction is that you cannot use it to tether to your laptop for a data connection through the phone. My question is how do they know? Does the laptop broadcast a different MAC or something that enables Telus to identify whether or not your tethering?

i dont think there is anyway they know besides observing the type of data youre transmitting/receiving and how much. been tethering for a long time now with no problems.
Which plan is it you are on exactly? i can`t find any info on this on the telus website. I would switch immediately if i can find the info.
It's not on the website but if you phone Telus they have it. My Apex rep in Surrey knew about it and set me up. I think it might expire today or tomorrow so hurry. My P4000 was stolen last month and I needed to replace it. I was only 18 months into a 3 year contract and only had a $200 bonus on my account for a new phone and contract. I was able to talk directly to Telus and get them to let me back into that phone for the $199 on a three year contract. The phone is around $550 without contract.
This is the first time I've seen unlimited data for a reasonable price in Canada.
I still think that there is a way they know your tethering. Perhaps the MAC address is the identifier. I hope someone can shed further light into this. It would be nice if Telus is just saying this to stop me but really don't have a mechanism to identify if you are tethering or not.

Select telus smartphones and select the phone you want and it'll show you available plan options for that particular model.
They were offering unlimited internet, email and IM for $15 during the xmas period thru till valentines day, now they re-packaged it for $30 or $45, whatever suits your taste. Way better than any other carrier in Canada.
Funny enough even though it says unlimited, there still is a cap on how much data you can use. It's capped, not quite too sure at how many gigs, but go over that and they will charge you $8/MB. A clause embedded in the plan stating that they have discretion over what they think is abuse of the service.
Only reason I know this is I have a friend of mine who got drunk of the service and used his pda to download content he would normally dl using his home pc, try guessing his reaction when his phone bill came up to $789!! they were courteous enough to send him an itemized bill tracking his usage to fully explain the charges. I thought it was freaking hilarious! I guess moral being If you MUST tether, do it reasonably or don't at all.

I believe as long as I stay on email checkup, and news, stock, and weather update, should be safe.
Question is, if this X-Max, the $15 plan comes back again, am I still eligible to change?

Initially it was first introduced for new clients only but then they extended the offer to existing clients, I don't see why you shouldn't be able to sign up when and if they re-introduce it, it was such a huge success. It can be used as an add-on to your existing plan.

I got the $15 unlimited internet plan around christmas-time. The only stipulation was that the voice+data plan had to go above $45. Originally it was just being offered for certain phones, then they opened it up to every smartphone. I told all my friends about it, only a couple got it. Now they raised the price to $30 and the ones that missed out are kicking themselves.

Here's something I found out the other day and want to pass it on. In the last few weeks I've been jealous of people buying a sgs on plans with other providers as the sgs is now not exclusive to Optus anymore and they are getting better deals then our social plans. I went and took a look at the Optus home page as I was viewing my bill and noticed that they have a change plan option which I could not access before. This may or may not be due to fact that I've now been with them for over 3 months now. Anyways to cut long story short if you notice there's a option for the Oct 2010 plans, since I'm on the 59$ plan I will be using that as a example. What I noticed was that it gives you 700$ of call credits compared to current I think 350$ and 2 gigs of data instead of 1gig. Text and mms is still unlimited,social sites are still free except for YouTube which I never use anyways. The call rates are almost the same but I think 10cents more per min. All in all I reckon these new cap plans are well worth it unless you really blow more then a gig on YouTube a month. I switched over on the 1st of Nov and for me the charge was 0$ . So if any of you guys want more credit and data then I suggest you play with your Optus home page. I don't work for Optus and infact I hate them but they were first in au for sgs. Also someone should pass this info onto other sgs owners on whirlpool as I don't have a account there.

Well yeah, if you were an early adopter like me and on the social plan, its a pretty simple choice.
If u wanna keep free youtube, stick to the plan.
If u want more credit, change to the extreme caps.
Personally, I hardly even use half my credit because I text a lot more than calling (and free texts so.. yeh). Also, I've been downloading >1GB of youtube every month for the last few months. I use JetVD to download and store 720p videos hehe Music videos and all, they look wonderful!
I don't know how people could use 2gb of data unless they're tethering and downloading multimedia and other large files. Which is why free youtube is good... I don't have to worry about a thing.
I read somewhere in contract a while back that youtube is limted by the bs fair go policy where you can only view 240mins of it, No idea how they put a limit on that though esp when we view in HD.

I used to be with them (for unwired/adsl and mob). Anyhoo looking at Exetels current pricing they are actually more expensive then the Optus cap plans ($59) due to the unlimited sms/mms deal.
I just got off the phone with a Verizon representative about adding the hotspot to my unlimited plan. Now yes I'm rooted and already had access to the hotspot, but I'm fixing to go on a trip where I would probably use enough data through it to get noticed. The woman I spoke to asked if I wanted to add a line and use the jetpack or just use the hotspot and let it use my data. Well obviously with a unlimited plan I wanted the latter. I asked two times during the call if this would change my plan and or cost extra and was told no. So I guess I will find out at the end of the month.
Now it was my understanding that the data share plans had the hotspot already but I was unaware of the old unlimited plans having this and Verizon not charging the extra $30. As I said I will find out at the end of this cycle if my plan goes up $30 or not but I though I would put it out there to the others who still have there unlimited plan.
This makes me nervous. I hope you are safe and they don't try any funny business.
I no longer talk to Verizon if possible. They almost had a heart attack last time I was in there. I then realized having over 30GB per month is not normal. So over 59GB this month would be even more crazy.... If that was true... Because I am not really saying that is me..... Just saying....

Well they don't have a plan to accommodate my usage. Last month was around 25 gig and so far this cycle I'm at 11 gig. I was ready to pay the $30 so I'll buy have to see what happens. I haven't received a email saying anything has changed so "fingers crossed".
When I upgraded from my Droid X (3G) to a Droid Razr Maxx (4G) the VZW store rep told me that because I have unlimited data, I could add hotspot too, and said it would cost more (don't remember what it was), but it would also be unlimited. I didn't do it, because I didn't need it, and if I did, I could probably root and get it.
I've never had a major need for it, but will be interested to see what happens with this. I seem to remember reading stuff about the FCC ruling that customers should be allowed by the carriers to use their data any way they wish, whether on their phone or tethered (wired or wireless) to other devices as they choose. But there was some strange wording that meant it only applied to people on non-unlimited plans, so Verizon never honored it.
I bought my Moto X outright to keep my unlimited data, and rarely use more than 2-3GB anymore. I used 10-12/mo when I didn't have internet at home for a while watching lots of stuff on Netflix and listening to Pandora a lot.

In the past I had the hotspot on my account because where I lived there was no internet but there was cell service then when I was able to get internet I canced it. I would think that it would still show that it had been on my account in the past but who knows. There is a possibility that she didn't know what she was talking about because at one time she said that there wasn't a option for a hotspot in my phone settings. I told here there was and the app was on my phone. Then she saw it. So there are some questions in my head and I will keep a close eye on it and come back with what I find.
My fingers are crossed for you. If that girl was clueless and the change forces you off unlimited there is practically no chance you will get it back unless you know the right someone on the inside. I don't see any way Verizon would allow a user with unlimited data to tether at no extra charge... especially when you consider unlimited data was explicitly disallowed from tethering when then FCC dropped the hammer on their use of band 7.
What if I have an old Verizon unlimited data plan? Can I download an app and avoid the $20 tethering fee too?
Unfortunately, the answer to this question is no. Verizon says that customers under the unlimited plan are required by the company's terms of service to pay an additional fee to tether their device.

I agree that I am very wary about any potential changes to my account. When I brought my Moto X in to activate it (bought it from Moto directly, off contract), I asked to speak to the manager and made it very clear that I ONLY wanted to activate the phone if I would absolutely NOT lose unlimited data. He chuckled and told me that they get a lot of people who are super paranoid about it, and there are always shady employees who want to upsell on stuff so they will tell you that you can get XYZ new feature for only $5 more per month, but not tell you that making that change will also take you off of unlimited data. I told him that was EXACTLY what I wanted to avoid and he again chuckled and said I wouldn't lose unlimited, then proceeded to upgrade my device, and then exited out of the computer program and pulled up my account a second time to show me it was still in there as unlimited.
My girlfriend used to work at Radioshack and there were people there (including managers) that did those shady "upgrades" all the time just to get more commission. People at authorized phone stores do that stuff too. Never deal with those people.
I have checked my online account twice today and its still showing unlimited. And she said it would not change or make me lose the unlimited. I did let her know that I didn't want to lose that.
I remember when I had an unlimited data plan and got a new cell + new "subscription" that meant that it wasn't unlimited anymore, lol.
Anyway, I forgot all about it and downloaded a few movies during that weekend.
The following monday they blocked all outgoing calls from my phone and directed me to their customer service (I was furious because i didn't know why) and told me that my subscription fee was around 2600usd (one MB was like 3usd at that time when you reached your limit).
I totally **** my pants and told them the story (acted kind of dumb, pretended to be technically handicapped) and they erased the whole amount.:laugh:

This. I routinely use between 80GB & 200GB a month and no problems as of yet. The last time I was in a Verizon store the guy asked me what the heck I was doing, I told him I watch a lot of Netflix. (Which isn't a lie, my last phone had HDMI out and I would Stream Netflix/GPM&TV/HBOGO/HULU through my phone) What I DIDN'T tell him was that about 20-30 of those gigs were through hotspot to other devices.
Yea that doesn't sound right. Where I work there is no "unlimited hotspot" option at all. If anything you'll probably see the 5 GB hotspot option for $50

Ok I got my bill the other day and there is no extra charge for the hotspot. So I figured that I would go ahead and update to 4.4.2 and when I tried to turn on the hotspot I got the familiar sign that I needed to contact verizon. But after rerooting and unlocking the wifi tether it worked. So obviously the rep that I talked with just didnt know what she was talking about and figured that it was on my plan or something as she didnt activate the hotspot. So scratch the free hotspot on unlimited plans.
I just updated my two computers at work and have to teather them. I also have an enormous music library because I am an elementary school music teacher and occasional DJ. This month I am at 109+ GB. I need to add my fiancée to my family plan by creating a data plan on her current number (not my unlimited plan) and just worry they might pull something. Maybe I should wait until the 13th when billing cycle resets current usage?
Also, my old phone (the one she will use) is x912 Droid RAZR Maxx. Will putting my old sim card that is used with that phone be able to get switched to her info? Just curious because I would rather hear information on this thread then at the Verizon store. Thanks!

I think you should be able to add her to your family plan for an extra 10 bucks a month plus the data plan. She will only be able to get a capped plan, but I'm sure you know this already. Even still she should be able to get 2gb for 30 bucks I think. They will probably try and get you to switch to their Share Everything plan.
As far as the Sim card is concerned, just trash it. They will give her a new one for the RAZR and assign it to her account. They're free anyways.

There is so much about the Turbo that is totally better than my last phone the Galaxy Nexus, root, latest Liquid Smooth Rom. But, and it is a big but: WiFi Hotspot is something that I use often, not every day; and I no longer have it. I've had the Turbo 4 days and really like it but the more I read the more convinced I become that a Wifi hotspot app. is not likely to come out any time soon... it really sucks.

Is not an option right now, FoxFi has an app. that supports non-root Hotspot on many phones, just not the Turbo. I don't need root just wifi hotspot... the more I read the more I'm convinced is not around the corner... or any time soon if ever. Hope I'm wrong, really like the Turbo.

Your not wrong. Back in September, I contacted the company that makes FoxFi and asked them if they were going to update pdaNet to work with Motorola phones running Kit Kat on Verizon's network. This was before the Turbo but it relates to all Motorola phones:
Here was their reply:
At this point we do not know if a solution exists around the WiFi blockage but we will keep looking. A solution has only been found for Samsung, LG or HTC phones, just not Motorola.
You can only use bluetooth mode or USB mode.

Now you know why is bumming me out, all my previous smartphones I made informed decisions, with the Turbo it was an impulse buy. The phone exceeded my expectations but I failed to do the research into a feature that is very important to me, my wife's Note 3 has hotspot , is not a total disaster but it burns me up.

Not gonna say that I have never used workarounds to get tethering on an unsupported data plan, but truth be told you are "stealing" from Verizon by doing so, so I can't really mark the phone down for it. That being said my fingers are crossed that root will be coming soon so that you, and even people like me with a plan that allows tethering can ditch the Verizon app for something better.

You are not the only that shares the opinion that it is "stealing", I gave up unlimited data for the Turbo, so I pay for a fixed amount of data up front whether I use it or not; since the fixed amount of data is "paid" for how I use it is my business , if I exceed the prepaid amount: again I will pay more for it, the hotspot feature is part of the phone is not "created" by Verizon. All Verizon does is block a feature that comes with my phone to restrict whether I use the data that I pay for up front: on my tablet for example.... I do believe there is "stealing" going on, not by me of that I am sure.

Exactly. The fact that Verizon charges extra for activating the hotspot feature on tiered data plans is plain wrong, and will be made illegal when the new net neutrality laws fall in place.
I don't know why some think it is stealing when a user has an unlimited plan and they want to use tethering. I pay for an unlimited plan just like others play for a plan that is limited. It isn't stealing.

Although if your contract is really that old I bet it had the 5gb limit before possible disconnect that my original plan did from when they atryed offering data at all. They never enforced it, but it's there. So I don't know how much benefit you'd get over a tiered plan if they decided to enforce for you tethering with something they can track.

Verizon start messing with the unlimited plan back in July of 2011. That is when they first started trying to charge extra for using the hot spot option. Back then it was an additional $30 a month for unlimited use of the hot spot. So you would have had to pay $30 a month for unlimited data and then another $30 a month for unlimited data using hot spot.
Have you seen their latest price structure:

No wonder they keep trying to get rid of us unlimited plan users. My unlimited plan is less than the 1 GB plan.
I currently have the 15gb plan, 3 lines,a 4g hotspot device, unlimited talk and text, edge plan on the turbo, ensurion, caller ID, and premium visual voicemail all for $208 a month after taxes. 15gigs seems to be enough for me but if I could I would use much more.

All of the new tiered data plans (the more everything plans) include tethering for no additional charge. You are on a "legacy" plan that technically no longer exists because it is from a time when not everybody and their dog had a smartphone. You have an option to change that. If there was no tethering when you got your plan then quit living in the stone age. It is perfectly legal for them to change the terms when asking you to sign a new contract. If you want to pay 200 bucks for an 800 dollar phone, you have to sign a contract it's as simple as that.
Yeah it sucks that we all lost unlimited data, but thats they way it is. Your laptop has the capability of pulling WAY more data than any smartphone in the world. There is a reason they don't want you tethering on an unlimited plan. People using it for torrenting, and netflixing on their 60 inch TV have potential to ruin the network quality for everybody else.
Like I said, I have tethered in the past too with third party apps, but you signed a contract that VERY specifically states you aren't allowed to do that, and we are using loopholes to get around it. If they catch you in the act they can do anything from blocking your workaround, to completely dropping you and not allowing you to use their network anymore. I've never heard of it happening, just saying it can. I sell VZW, AT&T, and Sprint service on a daily basis I have read every one of those contracts word for word, and third party tethering apps are very specifically prohibited which makes any other argument a moot point. You signed a paper that said you wouldn't tether without paying for that right.
It's also a straight up fact that 98% of people who got booted from unlimited plans were using less than 2GB per month anyway. It's only people like us here on XDA that are heavy users like that, and our abuse of the system is the entire reason they took away unlimited in the first place. If people hadn't been watching 100GB of netflix and pornhub every month on their smartphones then maybe it would never have become an issue. It isn't designed to replace your home internet service so stop acting like it should perform that way.

Didn't pay $200 for my Turbo, paid full price so I didn't have to sign a new contract and be charged double for a 2GB plan ($50 a month) then I pay for my unlimited data. ($24 a month)

Not true, they didn't come up with charging for the Hot Spot feature until July of 2011. I signed my contract way before then for unlimited data. I've paid full price for my past two phones to keep it. So there is nothing in my contract that says it isn't allowed.

Seriously? Data is data regardless of if you are watching Netflix, YouTube, or just doing emails. The government is already going after AT&T and Verizon because "Unlimited" should mean "Unlimited". There shouldn't be any throttles on the data, blocks on the data, etc.

Don't expect it to be. I have a very good IP at my home. For me it is when I am on the road with the grandkids that I need to have my phone turned on as a hot spot so that they can use their tablets. Ever try to go on a road trip with 8 grand kids ranging in age from 6 to 12?

Not true, they didn't come up with charging for the Hot Spot feature until July of 2011. I signed my contract way before then for unlimited data. I've paid full price for my past two phones to keep it. So there is nothing in my contract that says it isn't allowed.
Seriously? Data is data regardless of if you are watching Netflix, YouTube, or just doing emails. The government is already going after AT&T and Verizon because "Unlimited" should mean "Unlimited". There shouldn't be any throttles on the data, blocks on the data, etc.
Don't expect it to be. I have a very good IP at my home. For me it is when I am on the road with the grandkids that I need to have my phone turned on as a hot spot so that they can use their tablets. Ever try to go on a road trip with 8 grand kids ranging in age from 6 to 12?

This is copy and pasted verbatim from a Verizon contract from 2009
PDA/smartphone and BlackBerry® Plans: These VZEmail plans cannot be used: (1) for access to the Internet, intranets, or other data networks except as the device’s native applications and capabilities permit, unless you subscribe to BroadbandAccess Connect; or (2) for any applications that tether your device to laptops or personal computers other than for use of the Wireless Sync or the BlackBerry solution, unless you subscribe to BroadbandAccess Connect.
I was formerly a Verizon employee and now I sell phones for all 3 carriers I know wtf I'm talking about. Your plan falls under PDA/Smartphone plans, and it explicitly describes the need to have BroadbandAccess Connect to use anything that is not a NATIVE phone application. A third party tethering app is not considered native as it doesn't come pre-installed on the device.
It goes on further to say this:
Data Plans and Features (such as NationalAccess, BroadbandAccess, GlobalAccess, Push to Talk, and certain VZEmail services) may ONLY be used with wireless devices for the following purposes: Internet browsing; (ii) email; and (iii) intranet access (including access to corporate intranets, email, and individual productivity applications like customer relationship management, sales force, and field service automation).
You aren't even legally allowed to use it for video streaming, gaming, torrenting, or any other high bandwidth application on those old plans.

Wifi Hotspot is a native application that Verizon BLOCKS, it is not a third party app.
This is how a Verizon contract should read: Whatever we say is legal because we say so, whatever you think: is wrong, illegal and you the customers are thieves, the only one allowed to steal is Verizon period.

Oh my, I'm lost. I've currently have a Verizon S5 and with a custom Rom and have an grandfathered unlimited data plan. I have Wifi Hotspot active toggle and it's letting me tether so I can use my tablet and sometime my laptop away from home and be internet connected. About a month ago I purchased an S6 Edge and even unrooted I was able to use Foxfi to have tether and all was great until Verizon on November 20th made Foxfi obsolete. So I sold my Verizon Edge and went back to my trusty S5. Yesterday I ordered the 6p as I know it's fairly straight forward on rooting and I assumed that by having a custom ROM I would be able to have Wifi tethering again. But I've spent quite a while on searches and I cannot find out if that will be an option for the Nexus 6P. So I know this is a noob question, but if it's not an option to open the Wifi tether then I'll just not get 6p and stay with with my S5. I was really looking forward to the 6p but...
If anyone has an answer I would be most appreciative and thanks in advance.
Yes you'll be able tether no problem. I'm on Verizon and my 6P worked right out of the box.

I was on unlimited data with Verizon...the lone hold out on our account. But since Verizon is upping the monthly cost by $20.00 if you stay on unlimited, I finally just moved our account off to the extra large plan, which comes with 18 GB of shared data and tethering and by doing so I dropped out monthly bill by $26.00 a month. I could have upped the monthly GB's higher and our bill would have stayed about the same cost, but we just don't use that much mobile data. I say that to say this...I hung on as long as they didn't charge extra. I never even got close to exceeding 6 GB on my line except one month just recently...I tethered my sons IPad for him and let him download and install some big games and watch videos. Even then I only used about 6 GB. If you don't mind paying the extra $20.00, and you use an excessive amount of data, then unlimited is still probably a good option for you...it wasn't for me.

I feel the same way, but eventually Big Red will price us all out! Not tomorrow but if they raised $20 this month what's preventing them from making it $120 next year? Makes me think about that, just there are no guarantees. Gezz I hope Richard Branson or some Trillionaire with vision can create another carrier and makes DATA fast and inexpensive, oh and have great coverage everywhere - "I have a dream"

I don't see it as being anything to do with freedom...it is to do about economics. Why pay more for something you never use or at least in my case. By switching to the current plan I am now saving $46.00 a month (that is including after Verizon went up $20.00 on the unlimited and the $26.00 drop in my bill from changing plans). Unless you are one of these that does not have land line hard wired internet and you use your wireless internet for everything like downloading massive movies, streaming video...etc. I can't see how you benefit from unlimited. To me a $46.00 a month drop in my bill is a big difference. But, to each his own. If you don't mind paying the extra then great!

yep, i dumped mine a couple weeks ago too for fi.
thought about selling it. i had unl data and unl hotspot, so i could have got way more than the 2g or whatever they are going for on ebay,
just was done with vzw and didnt want the hassle of selling it.
im saving about $70-80/mo now.
sure i cant burn through 600-800g/mo like i used to, but really i only did it because i could, and to F vzw, not because i need to. i have wifi at home.
i only miss the thought of having it, there hasnt been a situation yet where i needed it and dint have it.
