Oops... the title should say NOT working.
When I did the small update (before 3.1), it worked but I lost root so reapplied Gingerbreak and was able to get root back just fine. With the full 3.1 update, it applied just fine as well but also lost root again.
When trying to apply Gingerbreak to 3.1, it just sits there (over 30 minutes, hasn't stopped) with message that it is still rooting and will reboot on success. The indicator is still spinning. I don't recall it taking 30 minutes previously.
I do have USB debug on and in portrait mode locked.
Anyone able to apply?
Use 1.2 from this post.

Thanks, that worked.

First post, so be gentle.
Just to start off, I have experience flashing all sorts of devices, installing CFW, etc. I recently rooted my new Atrix (flashed back to 1.26, rooted, bumped up to 1.57 w/ root) and have been playing around the past 36 hours with all the fun mods. Root access works wonderfully (although Titanium Backup does fail at startup and I cant figure that out) but other software has no problem gaining and using root.
I figured I wanted to try the HDMI Mirror mod so I followed Fenny's thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=980193
I tried to run the install.bat script, but it errored out saying that TIMEOUT wasnt a recognized command. So I did Install Method 2 (just pushing the packages over via ADB, logging in as su, and replacing the existing ones). I then cleared my Dalvik Cache.
When I plug my HDMI in, my screen is black, my atrix does literally nothing. It is pushing out some sort of a signal because my screen isn't giving the standard "No Signal" message, but it's just a black screen. Am I missing something? I followed each and every step of the second install method - no errors, everything worked fine.
I would have posted in that thread, but alas, this is my first post. Thanks for any help
So, I just happened to root my device using Gingerbreak 1.20 tonight.
Literally about 10 minutes later, I was prompted that a system update was available. I dont know if this was coincidence or if the rooting caused this to be seen as available.
I downloaded the system update (38 something MB, sorry I didnt get the exact size and version, I think I was just a bit stunned an update was available. I'm kicking myself now for not recording the specifics) and it gave me a message in the top left corner of the screen that it was booting into system recovery image and began applying.
Went from:
Android Version: 3.0.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b
Build Number: Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1
Went to:
Android Version: 3.0.1
Kernel Version: 2.6.36.3
Build Number: Acer_A500_1.141.07_COM_GEN1
It didnt appear to break root - I still have Superuser available.
Has anyone else got this or have any idea what went into this build? I'm still exploring and will report any noticed changes and/or new issues. I'll be checking to see if the screen issue still occurs.
EDIT: Just saw others got this in the general forum too. Sorry I posted to Development. Mods, please close if necessary.
Aw, snap. Is your rotation lock on? Switched my rotation lock off, reinstalled Gingerbreak, ran and it worked.
Installed the update. Did not lose root. It looks to be safe at a glance. Apps like Root Explorer are still working. Thanks for not breaking root, Acer.
Very Strange. Mine was rooted before the update, but ran RootCheck after the update and it wasn't rooted. I re-ran gingerbreak and I'm back rooted.
To Anyone that thinks they're still rooted after the update: have you ran RootCheck? I didn't try to do anything required by root 'before' I re-ran gingerbreak but mine definitely showed as no longer rooted after it until I re-rooted it.
Mine broke the root too. Just re-ran Gingerbreak and back to root.
At a glance, it looked like root was still good (Root Explorer was working) but yeah, must reroot the device after. And not sure what this update does.

Woke up this morning to this prompt. The system is downloading as I type this.
System is running:
Acer_A500_1.104.02_COM_GEN1
Just updated to:
Acer_A500_1.114.07_COM_GEN1
My tablet keeps failing when I try to update. I have the screen lock off and the tablet upright. (as someone else mentioned in another thread to do). How do I unroot my tablet?
received and installed the update at 4am in Brazil, first try. Model number from A501 to A500 and Product SKU from 3g to wifi. Still showing the cell standy thing, tho.
Didn't notice any random wake ups
GPS finally found me lol I'll test that further.. I still have the "searching for GPS" notification at the bottom of the screen, even though it seems to work perfectly now. Anyone else?
Might be my mind, but HC homescreens transition feel smoother and overall system response faster.
Thanks, Acer!

at least you are getting something OTA
Ditto
Unfortunately, I get the same thing. I was rooted, but I unrooted (not quite as thoroughly as you did, as I only used the "Unroot" option, but we got the same results). Wonder if it is something wrong with the update...

Did you change ANYTHING when rooted? Did you freeze, rename, modify or delete ANY of the files in the original ROM in any way, shape or form?
Same thing here
When I bought this device 3 weeks ago, I rooted it with z4root. Not too long after an update disabled z4root on the tablet.
I thought no big deal, but then today comes and I the OTA update won't work.
Anyone more experienced than me have any ideas of how to get this update applied properly?
Me too. Update failed to install. Not sure why. I have also tried unrooting.

I'm confused, if I froze an application, didn't unfreeze it but did a factory reset...wouldn't that resolve the issue?
ok so i woke up this morning and my a500 notified me the there was an update available so as you can imagine I was very happy to finally have this, so i updated and when it was done it said update successuful but when I checked it still said 3.01......WTF
Not rooted ever..
Those interested in getting back their OTA, properly backing up their original ROMS or restoring them, please follow the tutorials in this thread:
Going back to stock TUTORIAL
Be helpful and provide your firmware if you have a backup so we can build a database for those who don't.
Be sure to report what is working and what is not working for you once you've tried the tutorials!
Unlike the 14 threads on these matter I take the responsibility as OP to upgrade my original post as firmwares and new info becomes available.
Let's create a focused troubleshooting and tutorial thread,
Thanks.
I'm rooted via gingerbreak and the update worked fine while still rooted. It did break root. Just had to re-apply gingerbreak and all is good, back to root with latest update.
gingerbreak worked with official 3.1 ?
it didn't work with 'leaked' 3.1 ?
OTA
Ok after long night and hours of research i found out a lot.
1 if you have modded ad hoc in wpa_supplicant file recover the original file
2 if you have modded the phone.apk and telephoneyprovider.apk to save battery this is the reason why you won't get the update.
i put these files back and instantly got an update, i mean the exact second i set those back
i can't believe this my updates keep failing to install. FING POS i tried everything, factory reset
i have tried everything, even factory reset, it fails while installing after reboot
acer support are a bunch of retards, they don't even know they sell tablets????????
need help i can't upgrade, it fails every time
does anyone know where the install logs are
the log is \cache\recovery\last-log
Oklahoma City, OK noon CST
First attempt failed:
Changed the wpa_supplicant back to original and all went smooth the second time
I never changed anything and it failed.
**Edit: I rebooted my devices and left it completely alone after unzip and it rebooted into recovery mode and seems to be installing **
I had the same problem, It was pretty disheartening.... but I unrooted my device, re-booted and tried again and SUCCESS!!!
But now I can't get it to re-root using gingerbreak... HELP!
SUCCESS!
Ok. I got OTA update 4.010.08 (122.71 MB) this morning. It failed.
So I unrooted my device. Re-started it and tried again... SUCCESS!
I tried using Gingerbreak to root it again. FAIL!
So I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138228
SUCCESS!
Hope this helps those of you who are having problems.
No need to unroot nor go to stock.
I had the same issues. Then I simply used Acer Recovery to install stock recovery and everything worked fine.
Ceger
Acer Recovery?
Did Acer Recovery come with the tablet?
I tried the update numerous times over the last 4 days. Most of the time the download would fail, which I put down to my slow internet connection and overloaded Acer servers. But about 5 times it would finish downloading and then error out on install with a message about the update being invalid. I tried rebooting several times during this process. I have never rooted the tablet and only have a few apps installed as it was a recent purchase.
Finally it worked when I ejected the external SD card and rebooted. It may be a coincidence, but anyone else who gets the "invalid update" warning during install on an unrooted device may wish to try this prior to the download/install.
[Q] {FIXED}Problem with new OTA update..??....software"failed to update" message....
I have downloaded the update and clicked update now three times, and keep getting a failed to update message??.....any ideas..??.....I am rooted, but have used Voodoo to unroot......edit (now have tried 7 times......gets to the little android, and about one third of the way through installing, I get the triangle of death)
EDIT: See response below.......
Same thing is happening to me, except the phone is useless, because if I pull the battery and let it start up normally, the auto-update shutdown happens, and the cycle starts all over again.
If it matters, I'm on a stock AT&T rom with an unlocked bootloader.
FINALLY!!!
Finally got it......went to Moto.....tried through manual update with sd card......didn't work.......tried Autoupdater......didn't work the first time......ran Autoupdater a second time and IT WORKED........try that......
Still not working for me, what do you mean by Autoupdater? I've tried the SD card method and the downloaded method.
I'm having the same problem. Stock rom, rooted. the only modding i've done is the webtop over hdmi hack. tried both the manual and auto update.
There are two options on Moto......one is sd card.....the other is Auto......
http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Android_Products/ATRIX-4G_Software_Update_Page
But Voodoo did not save root......gotta find another way to root......not unlocking bootloader......maybe Pete's OneClick will update to 2.3.6 soon......
i factory reset to see if it would fix the update. ew ew ew ew motoblur ew ew ew ew ew. kill it with fire. oh the things i do for updates....
iM having problems with ota updates... phone is on 2.3.4 unlocked bootloader, i do the ota update... ended up failed to boot 4starting rsd.. flashing the 2.3.4 unlocked sbf brings phone back to life... i USED THE MOTOROLA SOFTWARE UPDATERand phone is on offical 2.3.6 software and firmware. with locked bootloader.
I keep trying the auto updater but How do I make my phone stop the auto shutdown. I cant make it stay on for more than 30 seconds I do a battery pull reboot the phone boots up fine works then 30 seconds later shuts-down and tries to install the update again and it gives me the exclamation with the android. Never mind I did a factory reset via recovery phone works fine.

THAT.
this is the same problem that's happened literally every time there has been a carrier update. search on how to restore webtop hack to stock and you'll be able to update after that.
rooted, locked bootloader, some hacks like HDMI webtop got fail to update massage
Those who don't know how to restore some hacks to stock, just go to http://www.motorola.com/Support/US-EN/Android_Products/ATRIX-4G_Software_Update_Page
choose Automated upgrade, download Motorola_Software_Update.exe, follow the steps to update.
Good luck!
I've spent a full day on this and no further ahead.
This is my wife's phone. A few months back (after Lollipop update) she was running into problems that I needed root to solve. I was lazy and tried Kingo Root and it worked on the first shot. Golden.
No problem but I screwed something up by being overzealous with deleting system apps and her cell data stopped working.
No biggie, I unrooted and did a factory reset and all seemed fine. But now I go to root it and... can't. Kingo Root fails.
Why?
But beyond that, I've followed every other tutorial on various other methods and every attempt ends in failure (stalls at startup screen, pre-animation. I've waited >1hr). I've had to reflash stock ROM several times.
In the stock bootloader under Check Root it says the bootloader is locked.
I've put on TWRP no problem, but that's what seems to stall the boot. I've read that TWRP is problematic with this phone and to use CWR (?) instead, but every link is dead, every tutorial regarding it is sketchy.
Advice?
