Tried creating and editing some Word docs on my gtab cuz my laptop died. Boy, was I disappointed. QuickOffice on the gtab just doesn't cut it; it lacks too many standard features (e.g., number bullets, etc). I've used Polaris Office on the Transformer, and that was much better. The Google Docs App is even worse; no formatting options whatsoever. I had high hopes for the web (desktop) version of Google Docs, but I don't think it was meant for honey comb. It was way too buggy; most of the time the soft keyboard won't even come up. What are your experiences in this area? Have you tried other alternatives? Please share. Thanks.

This question has (to my best knowledge) never been addressed in its own thread. I want to use the Xoom (or any other laptop-substitute for that matter) to edit Word and Excel documents, look at presentations on a screen instead of print outs, make last minute changes etc. Maybe take notes during meetings/presentations... you get the idea. It might also be used as multimedia device.
Now, with the currently available accessories (I really like the idea of a case with integrated bluetooth keyboard) is this a reasonable expectation of the Xoom?
Thanks for all your opinions!
I'm not using a bluetooth keyboard but using docs to go with pretty good success. I get an error loading to gdocs but it still does the upload. Some advanced excel functions and word formatting are not the but its decent. The powerpoint part of docs to go is garbage. I have also been using repligo for annotating pdf files and it is very slick well worth the 4.99.
I am trying to use my xoom in place of all the paper docs i used to print and take to meetings. Also signed up to beta test the swiftkey tablet keyboard to see if that works better than this stock honeycomb one.
Sent from my Xoom using XDA App
Thanks! I'll keep on looking; if not for the Xoom then at least for my Nook
So there are a couple Powerpoint Apps for the Xoom. Unfortunately, like allot of Office Suites there is some rendering and formatting issues when it comes to Powerpoint Documents. So if you are looking for an app to deliver your Powerpoints on, you might have to look elsewhere because they most likely won’t look the same. Unfortunately there isn’t allot of options out there, in fact I couldn’t find any. Please someone prove me wrong . However I have been going through a couple solutions. One solution is one I use at work because formatting problems even occur going across different Microsoft Powerpoint versions. So we convert to PDF and then present with a PDF viewer in fullscreen. An app like this doesn’t seem to exist yet. Again please someone prove me wrong . I dug a little deeper and came up with this Workaround. You can save your Powerpoint as Pictures on your computer. Its very easy in Microsoft Powerpoint and then you can load them in a folder on the Xoom and use the stock Gallery App to view them. And you know what… It Works!!! It has a very nice full-screen effect works great on the projector, and really isn’t too many additional steps. Its not the best thing in the world. But if you want to deliver powerpoint on your Xoom without worry about format getting messed up, this is a workable solution for now. I apologize if this was already suggested on the Xoom forum, I didn't come across it. I have a video also showing this in action.
I mentioned that in a very early thread but not as detailed. I also posted a comprehensive comparison between three different office suites (will post links later). Downside with PDF conversion is that animations are lost and I am not sure that the PDF rendering on the Xoom is 100% accurate.

Actually docs to go is much better at displaying power point then quick office pro. Ironically I had docs to go first. Then I bought the xoom and found that the native quickoffice app was better and accurately displaying excel compared to Docs to Go so when I got an email about quickoffice hd pro for tablets I was all over it. Excel was wonderful. Then today I had a presentation in a meeting and I thought great I'll play the slides on my xoom. It was a video conference. Anyway the slides were aweful. Formatting was a mess even on simple slides. I thought maybe it was a bug in quickoffice hd pro and tried the regular quckoffice. Same results. Finally I tried Docs to Go and low and behold the pages were perfect.
BTW word also displays more correctly in quickoffice then in Docs to go. Looks like the quickoffice guys just dropped the ball big time on power point. I'd say that Doc's to Go is better all around office program.

Sounds like an embarrasing situation with ppt and quickoffice. You should report that to them!
I am looking for a PDF viewer that will display Title information scrapped out of the metadata rather than the filename. The filenames of the files I am interested in viewing are the document number (i.e. 52343234245.pdf) and the Title is much more user friendly (i.e. LRU User Guide).
When I import PDFs into iBooks on the iPad, this information in automatically scrapped out. Any apps with similar functionality on Android?
Even a desktop utility that does the renaming would be better than nothing.
Lumiread that comes with the A500 shows the metadata, and it also allows you to fetch the metadata from the Internet, too. On 3.0.1 Lumiread is a tad slow, though, but I hear it's gotten some performance improvements in 3.1.
I've been looking for a good pdf viewer with two simple features; remember the page when closing a book and the ability to create bookmarks. Never thought of Lumiread until you mentioned it
Thanks
ezPDF is another one that's absolutely great, offers bookmarks, allows you to highlight selections, add your own notes etc. to PDF files, and it's really fast. It doesn't sport a bookshelf like the Lumiread though, nor does it show metadata.
EDIT: Just asked them if they have any plans to add similar support for metadata and a virtual "bookshelf" to ezPDF, I'll try to remember to mention here when I get a reply.

Thanks, I was going to e-mail them, but the firewall blocks their site for being high risk/malicious.
I'm not getting any reply from ezPDF folks, absolutely none. But after having tried a few other ebook readers Mantano Reader and Aldiko Book Reader both seem pretty good and both also support metadata. So far I lean towards Mantano myself, but I can't really find any specific issues with Aldiko either, just that the bookshelf view is slow to scroll.
Apart from showing metadata, which software is the fastest to flip page?
I found ezReader quite slow
When I flip page using Ipad 2, it really fast & smooth
I need such software for my Iconia as well
Thanks
TPT users - I have been considering this tablet for some time. I am a huge MS Onenote user and I have been looking for an alternative to my tablet PC. I tried the HTC flyer, but the pen recognition was not that great. (At times it was like writing with a pen that was running out of ink.) My question is if anyone has experience using the TPT for note taking and then getting the inked notes into onenote for easy use in onenote? I would love to wiat for the Samsung Note 10" but it appears that date keeps getting pushed back and need a solution soon.
I have the View - essentially the same tab - and the pen recognition is great. Bad battery perhaps or perhaps not using the right note program there are several really great ones out there - LectureNotes, Quill, and many others. You can also use a TPT pen on the Flyer, and vice versa. I have used OneNote on the TPT but not often yet. Getting too many other great note taking results with text conversion when I want.
Check out the app 7Notes for HWR. Love it. Also MyScript Stylus, but more expensive.
Thanks
I appreciate the response. I actuallly sent my original flyer back to try a second unit. They both seemed to suffer from not registering all the pen marks consistently over the entire screen.
I used both LectureNotes and Quill. I liked them both better than the default note taking app, but the issue I had was getting the notes organized. That is why I love Onenote. I tried to move over to Evernote and used the export function on those notetaking apps to get them to work well together, but I was unhappy with all the extra steps and OneNote inking of notes was not as fluid either.
My hope is that by the time the Samsung Note 10" launches, MS will include the inking capabilities into the Android version of Onenote and I will be a happy camper.
How did you use Onenote on your TPT.
LOL Didn't use it. Logged in with Splashtop and used it remotely on my pc.
First off,
Congrats GOOG, looks like we have a great (and affordable) tablet to play with! Some of the issues like missing SD, HDMI (has this been confirmed?) are really no big deal for me, 16GIG is huge, cheap storage is really spoiling us
Second,
I haven't used an Android product yet (this will be my first), moved from my amazing Motorola E6 (it was Linux/EZX based, a rooted device ran most linux ported apps for EZX, xmms baby) to the slick Nokia E71, and to Apple (currently on 4S). I have always known that Android is the way, but didn't move (too many choices in hardware?)
Ques 1) Will all Android market place apps work on the Nexus Tablet? I have seen some power apps (incredibly we have Total Commander port for android, Christian rocks, waiting for Alex to release DC port now)
Ques 2) How well do android spread sheet applications work on Tablets? Has anyone really stress tested complex excel / open office functions on Tablets? How will a spreadsheet feel on a 7 inch? Can I open Spreadsheets from email, edit, save a copy and send back on the fly?
Ques 3) Do you guys login in to remote VNC sessions using your tablet? What has been your experience on Android tablets? Is it smooth? My wife uses an iPad, and we use that to remote control a laptop connected to our LCD, I hate the experience
Ques 4) I intend to use this tablet for a lot of reading (black background, grey text), will Nexus 7 have any application that could render PDF text having unicode UTF-8 fonts + ability to reflow the text so that it fits the page width? I haven't seen any such application in the Apple iOS space, but incredibly Adobe did this on Symbian (UTF-8 with text reflow).
Quest 5) How do Android tablets fair in terms of productivity tools? (PIM, Task Management, Email, Reminders)
... I actually have a bunch of more questions, but I guess I will have to hold until we get more reviews of the Nexus 7.
Oops... I didn't realize my Sony T1 reader is an Android device. So this makes Nexus 7 my second, my bad.
Besides, *bump*

2) In my experience the basic excel functions work (sum, avg, etc.) I have had trouble with some of the more technical ones, and IIf statements do not work at all.
3) If you are talking about remote desktop...it still sucks.
5) I like android for productivity there are lots of apps and widgets, and they claim there is even newer and better stuff in 4.1 that this tablet will take advantage of.
Welcome to Android! Unfortunately I'm new to the tablet space, but I can answer your first question.
1) Android apps were made to be versatile. Well coded apps (key word there), will usually scale correctly according to what screen size you have. So a dev who makes a good phone app, should have it scale to a tablet screen.
Unfortunately, the lack of Android tablet success has led to a lack of "tablet specific" layouts for apps. So tablet users tend to have blown up versions of phone apps instead of UI's that take advantage of the extra real estate. But I think the success of the Nexus 7 might change a few developers minds.....
Edit- So just to clarify, most market apps will work on both phones and tablets. Unfortunately the wide variety of devices out there means you are much more likely to get occasional compatibility issues. Just a sacrifice you have to make for all the choice Android offers.

Actually if N7 can do Google docs without the horrible text box (save / cancel) rendering for individual cell edits, I would be very comfortable. Google docs is fully portable with my Open Office (Libre Office) sheets.

Nope, VNC as in running a TighVNC server on Windows/Linux and accessing it using a VNC client from the tablet. I am worried now, with my wife's iPad, I at-least get real estate to vent my frustration on, with 7 inch I may need a wall next to me (to bang my head on)

Thanks mate - I think 4s is my last apple device, I am moving.
But too many hardware options with Android - none perfect, I wonder why GOOG bought Motorola Mobility

I took the Samsung Tab for a spin yesterday, not bad at all (the slate with all those ports missing in N7 making users drool over it, it's nice. I installed a couple of applications from the market (TC for one), very smooth indeed. Thanks for confirming this. I hope I will need very little applications besides the stock applications on the tablet.

I tried this as well yesterday on the Samsung tab - I tried the Acer 7 tab as well, but I think it was a old android version (HC). Polaris Office Spreadsheet may fit my needs - but really need to spend an hour or 2 to really know if it gets the job done.

If anybody has used a PDF reader which does UTF8 + text re-flow + font adjust, please let me know - this would be killer feature for me if it works.
