Alarm does not go off when phone is off? - Streak 5 General

Is it normal for my alarm to NOT go off when the phone is turned off but rings as normal when it's on?
I ask this because I sleep at night with my phone turned off. The alarm is set for 6:35 as normal for the morning.
For the past 2 days it failed to go off. The phone was however switched off, I take it the alarm does not ring unless the phone is on?
Should this be true it is strange as the older phones, the ancient Nokia's and Ericsson's used to ring while the phone was off.
My previous HTC Desire HD had the same issue, the alarm would ONLY ring when the phone was on.
Should it be turned off it would not go off.
Why is this? Any way to fix it?

Anyone?

Simple enough, just put your phone to flight mode and turn off the screen, dont power it off and dont mute it.
cuz automatically waking up is not supported by wm/android device.

Excellent idea, flight mode! This way will get undisturbed plus no more than 1 or 2% loss of battery in standby mode...
Also no one can call & disturb me. I though auto wake up wasn't supported, just wansn't 100% sure.
Cheers valest.

Valest, this morning at 6:35 my alarm rang for the FIRST time!!!
You are right about not turning the phone off...
I forgot to put in on airplane mode but thank god it didn't go off and I hardly lost any power...
Over a 7-8 hour period battery dropped from 100% to 98%
What excellent battery the Streak has... Screen brightness is ALWAYS set to 80% too.
I'm half way through the day and battery is still 94%

Lol your battery must be special or you really don't use your phone much. The battery is certainly better than most but not that great.

PS welcome to the streak. Even though its a year old its pretty good

becuz he was sleeping and the phone isn't really in use*^o^*
cpu and screen backlight are battery draining,so turn off your screen and let cpu go idle(set itself to 245mhz) helps a lot.
still,it could be crazier,my streak survived a 3 hours trip with less than 10% battery: turn down brightness,go to flight mode, shutdown unnecessary background app,set cpu to 245mhz.I was reading an e-book back then.

Yeah that's one thing I miss about Symbian. I could set the alarm on my Nokia then shut it off.
I currently use Tasker with a "night saver" profile I created. From 10pm to 6am:
Shuts down cellular data
Shuts down wifi
Shuts down bluetooth
Shuts down GPS
Turns off auto-sync
Drops the volume to "1"

As an alternative: you could buy a dock (i use the slacker dock) and plug it in on your nightstand.
It charges so you dont have to turn anything off and it's upright so it even looks like a clock

Haha, clever idea! But after testing it & only loosing 2% battery it doesn't bother me keeping it on.
I thought it would have taken more power as my old HTC Desire HD had a crappy battery and needed to be charged almost every day with LITTLE use...
Standby overnight would take around 8-10% This is based on a 6-7 hour period, which I think is bad as it's doing nothing...

Brightness glitch(??)

Try this - using power control widget turn the brightness down to the lowest level. Then drag the notification bar down, and then without releasing your finger drag it all the way up. Brightness goes up. Weird huh? (LauncherPro, not rooted_yet)

Ha, so that's why my brightness mysteriously keeps going up from time to time.
Is there a way to turn this "feature" off?

Yeah, but then the brightness is higher than I want it.
I am trying to extend my battery life, so I'd rather the brightness stays at the lowest setting.
The problem is, I am not sure it's helping so much. Right now, it has been just short of 8 hours since the phone was plugged in. The battery is at about 50%.
Voice Calls account for 52%.
Display for 19%
Standby for 10%
Phone Idle for 7%
Skyfire for 5%
The problem is, voice calls show total time of 26 minutes 19 seconds.
Display shows 54 minutes 47 seconds.
Skyfire shows 23 minutes 47 seconds.
That's pretty light usage, IMO.

In the settings menu, right under screen timeout, there's a powersaver mode or something similar. If you read the subtext on it, it says something about examining the display and adjusting brightness based on what's being displayed. If you haven't already, try turning that feature off; but you may end up hurting battery life, which is opposite of your ultimate goal, I believe.
This is on firmware JG1 for European phones...
Thanks!

Battery life always suck on all the phones. I think the app BeyondPod, that I use, is especially hard on the battery for some reason. On my N1, I expect 8-12% battery drop per hour when listening to podcasts for some reason.

Dunno.... My battery died yesterday after less than 13 hours, with fairly light use: the biggest drain was voice calls, which accounted for less than 30 minutes in total
I've had the phone for only a few days, so I sure hope it's just battery conditioning. My old iPhone would last 2 days with similar use.
O.K. Fully discharged yesterday, charged overnight.
Now, 8h29m since plugged, the phone shows 35% battery.
41% use by voice calls (20 minutes!)
Display 30% (1h8m at the lowest brightness)
Cell standby 11%
It's not going to last through the day, again With barely any use).
I sure hope this gets better over the next few days.
dam tahts crazy! didnt know it could do that lol
This is not a glitch, if you drag your finger from the left top corner to the right it will higher the brightness and same goes ford the other way

Cant wait.

This phone is gonna be just like my hero was when i first got it.
Battery dead in 3 hours and no one knows why, signal issues, screen issues, whatever.
But im willing to deal with it because after a couple updates, my hero became fully funnctional and lasts me the whole day. The evo was the same way. I hate seeing you people compare the two battery lives. What yall should really be comparing is the speed with which htc responds to gimmicky software to samsungs handling of updates.
Just give it some time and your phone will actually operate to its potential.
The beauty with the epic is that it WILL eventually be updated to gingerbread also. I remember the minimum specs that google laid out were basically the Nexus One.
Even if the epic doesnt get the official gingerbread release, we all know the hacking community is gonna find some way to port over CM9 or whatever version he'll be upto by then.
I remember sprint saying the hero and the moment wont be upgradeable to froyo because they couldnt handle it, but that was only because they were effectively killing the two by releasing basically upgraded models less than a year after they came out.
I dont remember where i was headed with this.

Mine was that way until I read about the Airplane Mode workaround.
Apparently, if you go into your "About Phone" and then check what's been using your battery, you will see Cell Standby and Time without signal is under there. If it's 50% or more, you've got the bug. This presents itself whether you have terrific signal or not.
All you do is after every reboot, turn on Airplane mode (Flight Mode) and then turn it off again.
When I started doing that, I could go 10 hours or more with normal use on my phone without recharging. Before that, the phone would be dead within 3 or 4 hours.

While I am having some other issues with the phone, I have to say that using it as a phone, internet and email device during the day (no games, no live wallpapers), the battery life is nothing short of superb.
I run a full 12 hours with about 12 calls and a slew of emails (when email works) and IM's and I rarely go below 60% battery after that useage.
I do have wireless enabled whenever there is a suitable signal and I keep GPS off unless I need it for navigation.
Quite honestly blows my prior BB devices away with it's battery life.
Bump charge, folks. This helps a lot.
• Charge until blue light comes on.
• Unplug phone and turn it off
• Plug back in
• Wait until the blue light comes on indicating its full
• Unplug
• Wait a couple seconds and plug back in
• Turn phone on
• Let the blue light come on
• Unplug
• Wait a couple seconds and plug back in
Wash, rinse and repeat about 10 times and your battery will increase dramatically.

This seems rather extreme and cumbersome really. Where did you get all this info from?
Does bump charging increase the capacity or does it just get more charge in for that one session?
Also I'm in the same lame battery boat. No wifi no gps and still can't last a day without turning off without a charge in the middle.

Do you guys turn your tablet off when not in use?

This is my first tablet and not sure about battery life and everything. So I left my tablet on through the night and lost roughly 10% through the night. Not sure if thats normal or not. But if so, I will definitely be turning it off throughout the night or when I won't be using for awhile. But is there a standby mode or something we can put the tablet into?

I don't turn it off, no. One thing that will save you battery is to turn the airplane mode on when you're not using it.
I just turn off wireless and pwer off screen.
never been off
I never turn my tab off. At night.it will loose. 6 to 8 percent. At night maybe a bit more or less depending on how long its off.
And I use it often thru out the day
Awesome battery life
Haven't turned it off yet. I use it all day and plug it in at night around 20-30%, wake up charged and do it again.
I just turn the screen off overnight while charging; I leave wifi on to synch work emails & calendars. Nearly a decade of smartphone use has gotten me in the dedicated habit of charging everything every night.
Thing to keep in mind, tablets arent Kindles with week+ battery life; keep in the habit of charging it whenever convenient & you won't run out of juice unexpectedly.
I'm in the minority here.
I turn my Tab and Evo off every night, the phone just before bed. It save a bit of batt life and unwanted calls in the middle of the night or any alert tones as I'm a pretty light sleeper. I've also been doing this for probably 7-8 yrs with all my smart phones (Symbian, Win-Mo, Palm, BB and now Android).
Sometimes I turn it off at night, sometimes I just leave it on. It's definitely on ALL day. I haven't really seen it losing much battery if I leave it on overnight, but I don't have it configured to sync frequently. Whenever I notice the battery is getting a little low, I charge it up again -- don't really have a set pattern or routine that I charge it.
Anytime I know I won't be using it for twenty minutes or more, I just shut it down.
Not sure there is a right/wrong, good/bad way to do this, as it's pretty much a personal preference thang!
If I'm not gonna use it for more than a day, sure.
I also turn on airplane mode when I'm reading via Kindle or anything else that doesn't require wifi.
On a semi related note, does anyone else find the screen is too bright if you're in a dark room reading, even if you have brightness on the lowest setting?
So far I never see any difference to turn AIRPLANE MODE on... but anyway some people believe so... let say that work... hu hu hu
well
to answer I never turn off my tablet, neither turn off the wifi
I try to not use AUTO brightness, set brightness to medium.
I will turn it off... well... actually I do not.

That is crazy talk! I'd suffer some serrrrrious withdrawal
On to the question, no, my tablet stays on 24/7. The closest it gets to off is booting into recovery, but then it's right back on.
All my backups, security scans and cloud syncs are scheduled for the wee hours of the morning so wifi stays on at night too. Also, my iconia is my alarm clock, which is very useful for a shift worker who needs different alarms on different days.
only if the battery is low and Im to lazy to go charge it
I only turn my tablet off in order to reboot when it freezes up or gets laggy (maybe once a week). The rest of the time, it's on standby or being used.
I leave it on sometimes, other times I will randomly turn it off. I mean, its not a phone.. no reason it should be on 24/7. I don't even leave my PC on 24/7 - as it saves a lot of electricity to turn it off.
My phone (Droid X) however, stays on 24/7 =P
Yeah, I've been leaving mine on and its been just fine. I notice it turns off wifi or I guess at least disconnects when the screen is off so I'm sure that helps. At nights I guess I can turn airplane mode on and that should help. I'm impressed though with the battery so far.
I always turn it off when done, unless I know I will be using again in a short.

I use the Nook app as my eBook reader instead of the Kindle app. The Nook app has a separate brightness control within the app, and it allows me to turn even the white page brightness down to where it's very comfortable to read even in a pitch dark room. The nice thing about this is when I'm done reading and exit the Nook app, the global brightness settings for the tablet are restored so my dark wood wallpaper isn't too dark.
I'm not sure if the Kindle app has its own brightness control or not, but it might be with looking into.

yes, I noticed too, it's too damn bright, but not as bright as my phone, on the good side screen comparison between iconia, transformer, zoom and ipad2 the iconia gets praise cuz it's super dark black... you can notice easily (like me) if you're in the dark and look the status bar
I do not. I don't really ever turn mine off actually, except if the battery is at low and I'm out and not able to charge it, but that rarely happens.
I don't turn my PC off either. Turns out it doesn't save as much energy for me vs. time. I'd save roughly $90 a year if I diligently turned my PC and HTPC off...my PC however serves as the file server for everything in my home and I'm also very random in terms of bed times so it would cost me so much time (and maybe some parts issues as well) turning it on and off every time I needed to use it.

How to ridiculously improve stand by times

I noticed that when I switch off data network mode, the phone battery drains about 1% over 10 hours.
I therefore installed a widget on my home screen and switch it on when needed.

THANKS CAPTAIN OBVIOUS.
The fix may be ridiculous but the results are interesting.
Does anyone else get 1% decrease in 10 hours?
Mine is like 6-7 % in 10 hours with data - wifi - sync off
Can this be a problem about KG1?

[Q] Should alarm ring when phone is off?

Hi guys,
Just want to confirm with you that alarm doesn't work when phone is off. To me this is so stupid that I can't believe this is called "smart" phone. How come my prehistoric Nokia can do that?
It's so annoying to keep phone on all night for absolutely no reason, just for a sake of having alarm buzz in about 8 hours. Is this the same case with Android and iPhone?
Should your computer check for emails when it's turned off?
This is why android has deep sleep.
Sent from my x10, rocking Wolf's 2.3.3 + DooMKernel, overclocked to 1.2 GHz...
It depends what you mean by 'off'. If you mean a single short press of the power button (which actually puts the phone in Sleep mode), then, at least on my LGQ, the alarm goes off as I would expect. No probs.
If, however, you mean powered down via a long press of the power key and the display of the 'Goodbye' message, then you are truly turning off all functions of the phone and yes, the alarms would be shut off as well.
If you are putting the phone in sleep mode and the alarms are not working, I would try a soft reset of the phone, and if that doesn't fix it, maybe try a full reset then slowing adding applications to see if one is interfering with the alarm function.

Smart phones are not meant to be turned off. The standby mode is for putting the phone to sleep, all apps go into dormant so that very little power is needed to keep the phone and messaging system functioning. If you do not want to be bothered at night by phone calls and messaging, then put the phone on silent (no sound, no vibration). The clock and alarm will still functions, and even though you put the phone into silent mode, the phone is smart enough to still sound the alarm to wake you up. I hope that this will help you.
Yup, by "off" I meant turning the phone off with long press. I'm aware I can turn phone to silent and still have alarm work but that's not convenient because I have to do reverse in the morning. Second, and more important is that while it's on the stand by phone is still checking towers for signal, waiting for a phone call, wifi is still working and phone is checking emails, etc. It's just completely unnecessary battery drain just for a privilege of having alarm sound in the morning.
My old Nokia would sound alarm when it's off and ask me if I want to turn the phone on so I was expecting the same from much smarter phone.
Does anyone know if Android or iPhone work the same way? Anyways, I'll check tomorrow morning with my colleagues. I'm eager to learn if this is WP behavior only because then I could expect update to solve the problem.

What you are describing seems to be a function of just Nokia phone, I have never seen this on any phone that I have. You are wrong about standby, it uses very little battery and all data are shut down. I have an android phone and off is off just like this LG quantum. I believe iPhone is the same. Like I said smart phone are not meant to be turned off.
@Otnos, I believe you are wrong about the stand-by. When my phone is on the stand-by (not off) I can clearly hear when email arrives on my Gmail account which means he's listening WiFi and checking emails while in stand-by. He's of course also waiting for call and sms so phone is draining battery for no reason. Also, if you set your phone to wireless sync with your laptop or desktop, and if happens they are on, phone will start syncing files even when it's in the stand-by.
I just check with colleague who has Blackberry. He set alarm at 10:47 and when he was powering off his phone he got message "Next “ON” time is 10:47am". I would say that's smart, that's how smart phone should behave.
Edit: Since I have data plan maybe my phone was checking email over 3G, not wifi.
Edit2: There is a feature request for this so if you would like to see this please vote here!

Actually, I suspect your Blackberry friend is also putting their phone in 'standby' mode, since power off means 'power is off' -- nothing is working any more, not even the alarms, etc.
You are right, the radios are still on during standby mode, but at a very low power consumption. If you truly do want to preserve battery by turning off the phone at night, the other option might be an inexpensive alarm clock..

quite a few nokias do that and even a few LGs but I have yet to meet a Widows phone that would do that.
Shut down means a total shutdown. If alarm rings then there is something going on in background and it's not a true shutdown.
y don't you put your cellphone to offline & battery saver mode !
Thats the way it should be. How would you like if you shut down your phone & it rings in the middle of a meeting or an exam?!
Or when you are hiding in a closet, the husvand comes but your "shut down" phone raises an alarm!!!
Just cuz nokia did a mistake does not means it should be carried forward. Thank God this does not happens any more!

Or when you are hiding in a closet, the husvand comes but your "shut down" phone raises an alarm!!!
Just cuz nokia did a mistake does not means it should be carried forward. Thank God this does not happens any more!

No, Nokia did it right. Android, iPhone etc. do it wrong. There are also lots of people who miss this feature with new smartphones. This was special for Nokia phones that you can totally turn off your phone but it still wakes you up - it wasnt a misstake at all. No battery consumption at nights.

Hi guys,
Just want to confirm with you that alarm doesn't work when phone is off.

My alarm does work in my Nokia x Android phone when its completely shut down.it turns on automatically at the time when alarm is set and ring ...
"not meant to be turned off" So what happens when you're in the woods with no chargers and need your battery life? Answer that, smart guy.
It's stupid as hell. I have a samsung S390G and the alarm turns on from a complete off. My smart butt stupid new lg doesn't.

An iPhone will turn itself on even if it has previously turned itself off due to low battery to fire the alarm off, and it will blast the alarm off as long as the battery allows it to—or if it is charged, as long as the event lasts. I think it is about half and hour, I really haven't counted the time.
I was expecting this the first day I was forced to switch to Android, I had insomnia that night and I did have to wake up early and ended up falling asleep for half an hour more, thankfully my inner worries were strong enough to wake up by myself, a little late though.

l guess you're not smart enough to know how to read. l wrote "with no chargers" and batteries from chargers also run out. The situation remains as stated, adding different scenarios doesn't change the flaw of the device. Next time read before you reply.
