HD2 Running Android shows no data usage through Tmobile? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I found out today that t-mobile is showing zero data usage on my hd2 running Android, I believe the gingerbread off this site with the energy? ROM(that's what it says whenever the phone is rebooted) is it normal to show no data usage when I use a ton of internet, usually streaming Pandora, and never using a WiFi connection?

Nrg splash screen would show up if that was the last winmo rom you flashed, as for your claim, I must contest that as I am also on T-Mobile USA and have received messages regarding going over my data threshold for the month. So our data isn't magically invisible, would be nice though.
Maybe though, might you be using the simple mobile apn?

I noticed this same thing on my phone last night. I've been running different versions of android for the last year or so. Most recently I flashed a NAND version of Nexus Gingerbread rom. I was thinking about changing plans with T-Mobile so I decided to look at my past bills to see how much data I've been using but they all say 0.0MB.

Android Data Usage...

Can't believe I had a text from o2 stating I had used all my 500MB data in only two weeks...without hardly using the internet away from wifi, ok I have had my data and auto update on until now.
With Windows Mobile I never got close to the 500mb per month, why does Android use so much ?
Am I doing something wrong?

The majority of apps that you use with ANDROID run in the background and need this turned on for it to work.
If you want to minimise this impact go to the settings, wireless networks and change the background data option to off so that the apps cannot use this all the time. You usually have a constant connection to data when you have android.
This is from what I noticed having got a similar message from Vodafone, once I took the steps above then it stopped but I am arguing with Vodafone atm anyway as I signed an 'uncapped' contract, they are trying to screw me.
I had the same issue with t mobile, two months running I hit my 1gb limit and had my already speed limited access severely cut until next pay date. On t mobile though, if you buy an Android phone you automatically (or should) be put on a unrestricted speed 3gb plan, I sent them a few emails blagging I needed more data usage due to 'work' and they happily upgraded my allowances on speed and usage happily, I'd recommend trying the same, bit of advice though, try getting an email direct to o2s tech support rather than customer services, they usually just try and fob you off, best of luck!

Check your Phone after update to 2.2

Has anyone checked your 3G data use after updating to 2.2. I've noticed my 3G icon is coming on and have used 1.1K Out and 1.6K In data when in fact that I have the mobile networks/Mobil data turned off. I spend most all of my time at home and use WiFi only, but using several data counters (3G Watch Dog and Call Meter) I'm getting an increase of data use which did not happen in 1.6.
Why would data turn on by it's self?
Have they added something to the 2.2 to run your bill up?
Using Standard Locked Dell Streak 5
AT&T Locked US Ver. 1.6 - 6601
Upgraded to US Ver. 2.2 - 14844
Running UP 3G data when turned off
After checking this for the past couple hours, data received is 8.4KB, data sent is 13.5 KB 21.9KB total. 3G is turned off on the settings page and doesn't light up when the 3G turns on. It seems to happen when I open up the MARKET PLACE the 3G turns on, even though I have it turned off. I can go to the settings and 3G is still turned off, I turn it on the turn it off and the 3G Icon turns off.
As far as I can tell now Market Place is using 3G Data every time you access it, even though you are on WiFi and 3G is turned off.
DELL you better check this out. Running UP 3G data with it disconnected is a NO, NO, and I'm not happy being charged for data unnecessarily. I'm paying enough for the data plan and do not need to go over my plan limit and double the cost.
I purchased 3 att locked stresks from bestbuy for x-mas gifts. I purchased my stresk from dell direct unlocked and installed the same apps to compare data usage. True att 1.6 and dells 2.2 data stopped usage when over wifi. My brother just updated his to the att 2.2 and I installed the data watch apps on his to campare.
It does look like att has an app imbedded in there version thats doing it. I turned off the background data and that seemed to fix that but of course he cant get any of the apps auto notifications of new emails or post. It all has to be done manually. Sinc he has a grandfathered data plan, I told him leave it on as he doesnt come close to the 5gb cap. Hes close to a 3gb data usage.
Try turning off background data.

[Q]TMOUS Free Data?

Hello ladies and dudes
I have HTC HD2 TMOUS and obviously my carrier is TMOBILE US.
I was checking different roms for it and I noticed one thing.
On some, if not most, htc sense roms I was able to receive facebook, email, twitter, etc updates without having a data plan nor wifi.
I believe I have had data turned on the phone but I do not have actual data plan.
So I was working and had to check something on the phone and accidently opened email. And I noticed that it started to sync and I was like "Meh, whatcha doing stupid, I have no data plan". But All suddenly it pulled all recent email and I was able to read them even with images.
Then I tried facebook widget thing and it was pulling data too, as well as twitter.
Then I switched to vanilla froyo rom and the data thing was gone
Now I am wondering, is there a specific port that tmobile provides for free data but with maybe limited speed? or bandwidth?
Or maybe special APN settings?
I would love to see that back because it's kinda useful sometimes.
Hope someone can explain to me what it was about and if it's possible to get back.
P.S. I didn't have my wifi turned on. Plus it worked at different locations but only with data turned on in settings and with 3g+ on.
P.P.S. I did not get charged for data and I do not have data plan for sure.
P.P.P.S. I know tmobile provides free 2mb when you open new line, but this isnt my case, had this line for about half a year.
P.P.P.P.S. I don't care if the speed is 20kb/s or 3kb/s or hell 1kb/s
Woah that's awesome, Although I know nothing about T-Mobile Policies etc. Firstly though, Are you sure you haven't been charged?
sorry if im skeptical but i find it hard that your OS is affecting when you are able to get your data. Also, if you are getting data i would assume that your carrier is billing you like crazy without you realizing it
Go to my T-Mobile. Com and see if u have any data show up in ur usage. But I know that T-Mobile wont automatically add data plan to your account without notify you.
As I wrote before. I have double checked and I have NOT been charged extra.
I beleive that kernel might have something in it or APN settings.

[Q] Help—Phone using large amounts of data

I got a text from o2 on Sunday saying I'd used 80% of my data allowance—a huge amount since Tuesday!
I've disbaled data for now while I try and figure out what's gone wrong.
I checked the stats on the phone under network usage and it seems that 'Media' has been using the most (nothing else comes close). This has DRM Protected Content Storage, Download Manager, and Media Storage in the package.
I've been on the same ROM for ages (Rod's MIUI) and haven't installed any news apps recently…
Anyone have this problem before or know what's gone wrong??
Have you been using Pandora or another online radio app? Streaming movies?
Sent from my Nexus One using XDA App
Use Network Counter by mapeapps to get an idea of what is using data...
I use Google Listen Alot by the end of the month I used 2 GB minimum of data
SPB Mobile Manager will tell you which apps are download/uploading and how much
I've got an app called Monitor (it came with the ROM) that lists the apps and what they've used. Download Manager is listed as having used it all.
I haven't been streaming anything unusual no.
Does anyone know what Download Manager would be used by? I've disbaled it's 3G access and turned my data back on, I'll see how things go...

For me, a single 3 hour podcast ( I <3 listen) is 90+ meg. Add a little bit of twitter and facebook into the mix, 2G is easy to break in one billing cycle.
This is just silly now. I've disabled Download Manager with firewall but it's still using data, apps must be using it and my monitor isn't logging it as the app but that process.
I've had data turned off all day apart from a couple of times to check mail but I've just checked and I've somehow used over 50MB!
Can anyone help?
I think I've figured out what's happened if anyone is interested.
I've had the Android update alert popping up for ages now but I was waiting for Rod to update his ROM before I installed a new one. It's gone now so I'm guessing it's been trying to download the android update in the backgroud whenever I've had a signal.
Serves me right to not updating to a ROM that gets rid of the update alert I guess.
This is gonna be a fun month with no data allowance…
Are O2 that stringent about their data caps or are you a frequent abuser? It pisses me off no end that caps are even in place, especially on 'unlimited' plans, but when they get all pedantic it makes me rage!
FWIW, Vodafone have always been good to me if you're ever thinking of switching. And i abuse the hell out of my data allowance
I've used the full 500MB so I've turned data off, rather not face a large bill...
I've updated ROM from Rod's 2.5 to 2.9 as it had apparently removed the updater. I did this today, in the last few hours Media Storage has used 265MB (on wifi as I still have 3g disabled) even though I've been doing nothing.
Anybody have any clues as to what's going on? I've tried googling with no luck. I did see a couple of similar sounding things and mention of a patch to disable OTA updates... anybody know anything about it?

[Q] Huge internet usage

Hey everyone,
I have a dell venue pro and I live in the UK and am on the O2 network. I am on the £10 tarriff with a £3 bolt on which gives me 100 Mb of internet to use per month, I thought this would be enough for casual Facebook updates and using Bing maps, however when the bolt on was activated I turned my WiFi on because I was at home and watched a 40 minute video off the internet, when I checked my allowance it said I had used 70mb! First of all my WiFi was on so my cellular connection shouldn't have been used anyway so I phone o2 who said sorry we only charge for what you use. So I disabled my WiFi enabled 3g and went on google and Facebook and it cost me 9mb! When I turned off 3g the usage was sensible again, so is there something going on in the background that I should turn off? My email is synced at every half an hour but that's the only background thing going on that I am aware of, all my friends use 3g and there internet usage is nowhere as near as wild as mine is, can anyone please help me?
Cheers,
Syed

I had a similar experience a while back. Since my mobile provider offers automatic text messages when I'm about to reach my 3G limit along with full history log of usage, I had a look and noticed my DVP stayed connected for over an hour somehow even though I was not using the phone at that time. E-mail checks were setup like yours. The weird thing is that it didn't happen in the beginning when I used 3G and left it on without using it.
By any chance did you update to the 8107 version of Mango? Because it only happened to me after that, perhaps it's related? I forced the update on my phone...

Thanks for the reply. My phone came pre-loaded with Mango so I've never experienced pre-Mango. The OS version on my phone is 7.10.7720.68. After you forced the update 8107, is the internet usage back down to normal with 3g? Thanks.
