Ok so I recently ordered my first tablet, I went with the xoom since I wanted fast updates. So myquestion is, is there a difference between stock honeycomb compared to the popular ROMs in the development section?
I should have my xoom in a few days hopefully, I was originally going to flash a kernel to OC. I was however questioning on whether to flash a ROM or not. From experience what will you guys recommended, flash a custom ROM or not?
Thanks

I think your big question is whether to root or not. Personally, I would root and install the solarnz recovery version for CWM and then flash Team Tiamat Rom l.l. It's fantastic! It's so much smoother than stock. The tiamat kernels are great too. There are some other nice choices as well, and more are on the way. Xoom developers are the greatest!
Very hard to brick the root if you follow instructions
just dont bother relocking it shouldnt ever need to relock it in the first place
i put tiamat 1.1 on my Xoom when it came out and it has completely fixed most issues I had with the Xoom. SD card support, no more lag, and extremely fast boots (with a nice new boot animation). When you flash the rom make sure you get setcpu off the market. You can change the CPU speed on the fly! I keep mine at 1.5 ghz because 1.7 has rebooted on me a few times.
I am running the Tiamat 1.1 rom as well. I have had very few if any issues. SD card support, overclocking, stability, root access, etc...... I liked my Xoom when I purchased it, I LOVE my rooted and rommed XOOM!

Ok i keep getting nagged to update my g2 I am permrooted using the no adb gfree method. So i have s-off supercid and all that. I want to manually flash a pre-rooted GB rom but I'm hoping for a stock rom with minimal changes. The one exception is I want to be able to overclock, I've been looking everywhere but there are too many options without the specific changes and builds outlined. Just a little confused and looking for advice on a rom that will fit what I'm looking for. I'm happy with the stock feel just want to overclock basically. Any ideas?
BOO! no one has any recommendations?
Xboarder56's stock 2.3 + enhancements can be overclocked and is pretty much just stock AOSP.

Sorry I'm new to some of this lol, but its that off the new ota build? Also does it make a difference? I have a stock rooted rom dvds it works great but I want the option of over clocking just because I can't help myself plus its awesome. I have pretty much every thing I own overclocked lol. free power is epic

CM7 and xboarder56's are both based on AOSP 2.3.5, the latest android release. There's no need for them to be based off of the OTA build because they've been compiled from AOSP source (and been around before the OTA was even a thought). For this reason we've had things like CM7 2.3 ROMs since January on the G2. Nearly every ROM in the dev section will have custom kernels that allow overclocking, though (except the bone stock pre-rooted OTA Builds, they're pretty much stuck atm).

Find the radio thread in the dev section. I recommend flashing the radio intended for the T-mobile 2.3 OTA.
is that radio Vision_Radio_12.52. 60.25_26.08.04.30 ? Also, I flashed the bone stock pre rooted. My thing was I wanted to keep the stock look for now. Just to keep it simple, plus I like it. I will probably flash virtuous when they come out with a new update.

Yes thats the T-Mo US OTA radio.
ROMs like CM7 and other AOSP ones are very close to stock. The G2 ships (and OTAs) with an almost stock ROM, so anything built from AOSP will be very similar.
Something like CM7 will be much quicker and efficient with tons of extra improvements, but look very similar.
In December, when I picked up my TF101, I used Razorclaw + CWM to root it. I also found some kind of an update here that I applied that allowed me to overlock the device .. I believe it was a form of kernel patch?
I would like to go to ICS. I need to be rooted after ICS though, we have a VPN client for our SonicWall firewall that requires the OS to be rooted. I would also prefer an ICS port that supports overclocking like my current build .. it's been incredibly useful to clock up in to the 1400s as it makes everything run so much better.
Is it possible to upgrade to the stock ICS, root it easily and patch it to allow for overclocking at this time? If so, could someone direct me to a guide that shows what the easiest way to do this is, since I already have CWM in (although can't remember how to get it to come up on boot .. doh)?
Thanks =)
Wait till Asus fix the problems.
Yea dont install ICS, it would be like pouring water over your PC
It might seem fun at the time, but its really not a good idea
I would say it is a very bad idea. Avoid it. I did it and literally my tablet is unusable now because of
Slow response
Random rebooted
Random no message crash of apps like gmail.
Dead slow,app response
white screen on app loading
It is now embarrassing infront of ipad users.

Ignore the fear mongering posters.
Tons of people are using ICS without issues. But yes, some do experience issues.
Since you have CWM, you can directly flash the pre-rooted stock ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1552303 This is the latest 9.2.1.17 version.
If you want to overclock, you can flash custom ICS ROMs that support overclocking. There's only 2 at the moment, Team EOS and Codename Android.
Frequently updated custom ICS roms such as Team EOS and CM9 tend to be very stable and have fixes that stock ICS doesn't have, so flash a custom ROM instead of the stock ROM if you are concerned about possible issues.
As always, do factory reset + clear cache + clear dalvik cache within CWM before flashing the stock ROM or any custom ROM.
To be safe, I would update your CWM to the latest version here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1213723 before flashing anything.

Terrible advise.
Why tell someone to update to an OS that has literally flooded XDA and other forums, and ASUS's facebook page with people saying their TF is no longer usable ?
For the sake of waiting for a working update, why suggest doing something that could very well turn their TF into a buggy POS ?
There is nothing in ICS that is worth the risk

There are just as many people, probably much much more, who aren't having problems.
Besides, have you tried any custom ROMs? If not, stfu.
I would no say my TF is unusable under ICS.
It works fine, apart from not so random reboots, as it reboots mainly in the morning when I wake it up form the night...
maybe the Sleeping Beauty requires a kiss from the Prince ...
By the way, it used to be really better under HoneyComb, I wish i could have refused that damned firmware upgrade ...
If I were you I'd rather wait as an other poster said for a really proven Stable version from Asus

If you are using one of the better custom ICS roms and still having such bad issues, the problem is you and your apps since those AOSP roms aren't even based on Asus's ICS.
The OP has root and CWM, and wants to overclock. So how was it a bad advice to recommend a custom ICS rom?
Just because you are having issues, doesn't mean everyone else will.
I've never had any issues at all and I just got done testing like 5 different ROMs. No issues whatsoever. Probably because I do it correctly and do a full wipe including format /system before I flash anything.
I've got issues on Stock and I did a full wipe using voldn+power method and this was before I rooted. I also lost sound randomly on Stock, and the custom kernels I still get reboots but my sound for the main part does work.
So, if the OP needs their tablet to work correctly then wait, if it's not that important to them and they don't need for day to day tasks then take a chance, you might get lucky or you might be causing yourself a headache, up to you.

How is the problem me when I am doing everything the "ASUS way" ?
The problem is ASUS and their code.
If you read the OP's actual post, you will see this line
"Is it possible to upgrade to the stock ICS"
And if you want to go even further into it, your line "Probably because I do it correctly and do a full wipe including format /system before I flash anything"
I don't think you can get a cleaner flash than NVFLASH, which is how I always flash my ROMs
Hello
I just wanted to say I bought this device two days ago and I am so very happy with it.
I had a Xperia Pro and a Galaxy S but decided to go "big"
And I am glad I did.
The only small downside is that it seems to be so hard to root this one. I have not found any easy way as with for example Xperia Pro.
I am very pleased with the stock rom but I really need to get those bloatware out...but I dont want to flash a rom just to get root.
Well anyway, happy for bying this and I hope it continues to be as fast and nice.
So to others thinking of buying, just do it.....

hey flash speedmod kernel via pc odin and you will have a root access and a yellow triangle, wich can be removed via remove yellow traingle if you are on ics.
ps I recomment kingdroid 4.3 rom and speedmod kernel.
after you got clockworkmod recovery flash abyss 4.2 reboot recovery run jbdroid script flash kingdroid 4.3 rom with cf root kernel after aht flash speedmod k3-7
if you have any question use the search!!!!!!!!!
If u r on ICS, DO NOT DO A FACTORY RESET/WIPE. Note ICS kernwl has a brick bug.
Speedmod kernels and a few other custom kernels have a work around to the bruck bug.
afaik :cyclops:
keep device on gb
ics is risky if you don't want to brick your note than keep it on gb
or follow safe method as prescribed by many dev and user and upgrade it to ics
i have purchased mine yesterday and i will keep it on gb till emmc-bug solution come out :fingers-crossed:
You can root ur Note using the guide here by Dr Ketan @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1424997
As long as you do not perform a factory wipe/reset, ICS is quite good.
I myself have fallen victim to the eMMC brick bug. I got it repaired under warranty. Rooted as per Doc K's guide and flashed SpeedMod kernel. I am on it since about a month now. Running smooth.
Remember always... any time you want to wipe, flash a stock GB rom, perform a wipe and ttgen upgrade to ICS. That is 100% safe. DIRECT WIPE FROM ICS IS 100% DANGEROUS.
Thank you all for so good advices. I am on GB and plan to stay there until a safe version comes from Samsung or any of all excellent developers here.
Oh I am used to search no worries.
Probably I will end up with flashing rom soon. But I feel this phone is magic.
Besides the browser everything is perfect!!

Hardbrick issue is gone with this rom.
Good luck

Hi, i'm a little bit scared about modifying it. Is there a real big difference in performance between the stock rom and a custom with a kernel at stock frequencies? And i've seen a lot of methods about unlocking/rooting it, but i am scared if i brick it... Is there a 100% safe method to unlock and root it? And i've heard about a problem with the buggy stock recovery, will i have this problem if i flash cwm?
Sorry for the huge number of questions and for my bad english

Personally I found that there is not a great deal of difference between stock ROM and many of the custom ROMs out there. For me it is more to do with having the freedom to get tore into the tablet.
There is never a 100% guarantee that yo won't mess up when rooting and installing custom software, however the vast majority of users on here have managed to do it safely with the tools available.
If you are going down the path of rooting and customs, may I suggest you give the team EOS ROM a try coupled with Franco kernel. They work together like a dream. Also paranoid android ROM for something different . Though I found it to be a little slow for my liking.
Finally clemsyns elite kernel if you want crazy performance, but it does eat the battery
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Rooting is quite painless and reasonably safe if you follow the directions closely. The one click rooting methods, elsewhere in this forum...work well.
Myself, I prefer the stock rom. The custom roms might offer better performance, but can be buggy at times. although. I do switch back and forth to try them out. Remember, these roms
are all works in progress, so do not be surprised if something does not work the way you think
it should.
Thanks for the answers. I'm thinking about only rooting it. Will i receive the ota for a new update?

In my experience, OTA never worked to well.. but there are ways around it, for example... backing up your apps, then load a fresh updated factory image. then just restore your apps..
Titanium backup is one such app, but there are others .
So far no matter what I try I cant brick it oh I can get it stuck but theres always a way to fix it. And like some others here I have tried I believe every ROM out there. Not one really stands out "different" for ME then any other. Nexus root toolkit is by far the easiest to use for me. If your into battery life so far Stock wins hands down.
Unlocking and rooting the Nexus is really simple and pretty much foolproof. I'll admit there isn't that much of a difference between stock and custom ROMs because the N7 with JB is already a beast. I just like custom ROMs because you have the ability to make it faster if you want to (I have my CPU over clocked by 500 MHz and my GPU over clocked by 300 MHz thanks to clemsyn's elite kernel) the only reasons why I wanted to put a custom ROM on this was because I missed the 3 in 1 shutdown menu and the ability to remove the notification shae toggles, other than that I don't mess with much because JB is already buttery smooth. Gone are the days when you have to root, OC and install custom ROMs just to get good performance out of your device like I had to do with the OG droid.
I would definitely at least root the device for the time being. Aside from some customization options in a few custom ROMs I actually really enjoy stock on my N7... I would also take a look at ... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1905961 once you have it all ready to go... I found it made an improvement to my Wifi and GPS by a fair bit, no custom rom needed.

You have to unlock and use custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) to flash a custom rom. I suggest twrp over cwm. Many, many complaints against cwm on this device.
I believe sim card unlock code has to come from the cell provider.

+1 for TWRP and CleanROM.
I originally flashed CWM but had issues right from the beginning. Flashed TWRP and it's been smooth sailing ever since. As for ROMs, there are quite a few good 1's in this section. I decided to give CleanROM a try and I'm very glad that I did. The stock based ROM is outstanding! If you are thinking about getting a dock in the future, I recommend it. The keyboard really comes in handy and the extra battery life, USB, and full size sd card slot are a HUGE plus.
I would like to give you a word of caution. Please READ everything VERY carefully before you attempt to flash a recovery and ROM. The TF300 is a great tablet but is very easy to brick if you are not paying attention to what you're doing. Quite a few people in here have very expensive paperweights do to the fact that they didn't pay attention to what they were doing.
Read, ask questions, and then read some more and you'll be just fine. Good luck and welcome to the TF300 section!
I dont see how you guys are running TWRP so smooth, I have issues with TWRP, I enjoy CWM, the only downside is having to use the physical buttons, but that's not too much of a bother.

I couldn't get CWM to work at all on my TF300. I couldn't even get secure root access with it, and I've flashed dozens of ROMS and recoveries on multiple devices a variety of ways. Once I flashed TWRP via fastboot, rooting was easy and the device runs well even on the stock ROM.
If I hadn't already installed all my apps and data, I might try CleanROM. Scrosler always did nice ROMs for the Rezound and other devices. I've also run Cyanogen on my Rezound, but wanted to see how the native Asus ROM worked for a while before moving on.
I'm using Paranoid Android on mine, with TWRP. You do need a custom recovery though, the stock one won't really cut it for this type of thing. My own preference is TWRP, but it's really up to you.

I don't have anything against CWM. As a matter of fact, I'm running CWM touch on my phone and love it. It's just that CWM doesn't work well on the TF300. At least it didn't for me. From what I've read, many other users had the same issues I did.
Also, as far as I know TWRP is the only recovery that will work with the newest 4.2 update.
I use CWM for testing and REODEXing. It runs significantly slower than TWRP although the latest version has made some improvements. I will still call it laggy compared to TWRP though.
Paranoid Android is really good so far... I love pie and full screen.
