[Q] missing memory (repost from Galaxy Tab General) - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

copied from wrong forum. my mistake.
----------------------
Galaxy Tab 10.1 32GB (model GT-P7510)
Honeycomb 3.1 (build HMJ37.UEKF3)
purchased open box retail at local bestbuy
was unlocked when purchased
works fine
encrypted. set up. installed about a dozen apps.
storage space seems fine:
28.01 GB available - 433MB of apps - 133MB of files - 4kb fluff = 27.46GB available
however, internal memory seems busted:
Settings/Applicaitons/Running reports 171MB used and 407MB free
?407
* What do you other GT 10.1 owners show?
* Should this be a real 1024MB available?
-----------------
Over in the GT General forum, it was suggested that the memory is in use by the graphics card. It seems a bit high for the GPU to reserve 500+ MB for 12x8 scrreen, especially w/o any 3D running.
* Does anyone have data on how the Tegra 2 SOC deploys memory?
------------------
basically, I am trying to find out if I have a defective/tampered unit or not.

My galaxy tab has total RAM of 723. I know the Iconia has 724. I believe all Tegra 2 based devices are around this range give or take some compiled kernel parameters tweaked allocation ranges. You dont have a defective tab....
Its a somewhat complex topic and reserved RAM for the Geforce ULP is just a part of the amount allocated. A good google search should yeld alot of results with the same questions and answers and more details.

Available RAM info

Hey guys,
I was watching a demo of this phone from the French blog Frandroid and came across some useful info about the available amount of RAM:
We know the Galaxy S has 512MB of RAM, however, being the owner of an i8000 Omnia II (only 256MB), I can tell you that there are major issues with the very low available amount of RAM the phone actually had (the people over at Modaco were fighting like crazy to bring the amount up).
- Apparently, the phone has 180MB of available RAM (the rest seems to be used by Samsung/Android and not available for apps and all that).
- The phone has 79MB of available RAM with the following apps running:
+ Email
+ Clock
+ Amazon MP3
+ Voice Recognition (from Google)
+ Browser (however I don't know if it's Web or not)
+ Social Hub
+ Video Player
+ MP3 Player
+ "Advance Task Killer Free"
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Will

That looks pretty good to me. (I can't see what other apps i would be using with all of those running. To use GPS or read ebooks or write documents, etc I would close half of them)
Does anyone know if froyo uses more resources than eclair?
PS. I assume you mean those apps were all running simultaneously, and there was still 79MB free?
PPS. This will be my first android phone, so I hope 79MB free is pretty good. For some reason I seem to think that your post is criticizing these results, but I could be mis-reading. It is so late...
Because they are using the prototype version.
As gsmarena have stated the prototype version does only have 256 Mb while the final version will have 512 Mb

No, the prototype had 512 meg of ram, just the software wasn't reporting it correctly
There are two things to consider here: first, with 2.1, the system can't use all of the available RAM. That will have to wait until Froyo arrives. Second, Android isn't Windows! Its Multitasking is very advanced and specifically designed for mobile devices. Even if you think all these applications are currently running, and the device does its magic to let it appear so, they don't always eat their share of RAM.
Free RAM says nothing at all on Android. Even apps that aren't currently "running" are kept in Memory when they are likely to be started again soon. What use is a large sum of unused memory? If you really need it, it will be there - at other times be glad it is put to use!
That might be true but as an i8000 owner I strongly advice everybody who want to buy that phone to what still somebody realiable got the phone and can report about the total amount of ram that is aviable to the system (OS + apps).
The I8000 only has about of 139 - 156 mb ram aviable to the system besides being sold as a 256 mb device.

I think this is why the I800 was fast because "maybe" samsung came up with away to use some of the RAM space to speed up the device .
It might happen again specially while the Galaxy S looks so fast
For now let's say that Galaxy S will have 412 MB of available RAM .. still this looks too much
goood..

Ram question

just a quick question. after reading about the specs the iconia a500 should have 1gb of ram. in application settings it looks like it adds up to 512mb? is this correct?
This is not correct. Go to Settings> About Tablet>Device Information and scroll down to RAM size.
okay thanks. I'm actually at staples now and. Checked the xoom and the iconia displays and they have the same issue
I believe the 1 GB advertisement (on Xoom and actually all other Honeycomb models), is 512 MB of onboard ram, and 512 MB for the video card.
Thus adding to 1 GB.
I believe this is a "standard" (yeah, frustrating, but true). All Honeycomb tablets advertising 1 GB of ram actually mean 512 MB onboard, and 512 MB on video.
thank you so much for clearing that up!
I believe it is 1gb of system ram (possibly shared on demand with the video hardware)... Using Advanced Task Killer when I clear the running tasks I see 445MB free. There is no way the system is running on just 55MB. I'm guessing Honeycomb just uses a lot of ram in background system processes.
The running applications on mine are using 149MB with 455MB free right now but I don't think that number accounts for all of the background services. Anyway it's not a dedicated 512/512 ram split.

[Q] Ram info on your tab?

I want to know that the total ram showed in settings=>applications=>manage applications=>running applications. My retail version showing 420mb free plus 173mb used ram total 593mb ram on the system instead of 1gb. Can someone plz check in their tabs either retail or io version plz. Thanks
I would guess a significant portion of your "missing" RAM is set aside for the GPU. The ended up being the case for the Galaxy S phones - 512mb RAM, but only 330 available for the OS and apps.
Still, 600mb is a pretty respectable amount for these devices.
My Xoom shows 120MB used and 379MB free. So the total amount shown seems normal. I would like to know why there is so little free memory on GT10.1 if it's a stock Honeycomb?
It's currently 169 / 412 MB on my GT, so I guess about 400 MB is set aside for Graphic processing.
Reboot your GT 10.1 and then report here the RAM statistic ... *please*.
After boot my 10.1 I/O shows 143MB used and 476MB free.

true, considering the ipad manages to run smoothly with just 500mb
after reboot tab showing 169 used and 449 free. Running stock honeycomb 3.1 retail version tab.
I've got 148 used and 412 free
I second all of the above. Mine is usually around 600 MB or less in total. So I guess that's normal? It wouldn't have anything to do with the tab showing hiccups and lags after using it a little bit? Everything was very fast when I used it for the first day and then it started slowing down, especially when I run live wallpapers. Did any of you experience that? It breaks my heart to admit that iPad2 (even iPad) runs so much more smoothly than my Galaxy.

[Q] A500 - how much RAM in reality ?

Hello,
After testing some task manager application to try to see what process are running ( my tablet is losing a lot of battery quickly, under speedlight 4.3) ,
I Saw in their infos panel that my Tablet is really a A500, but it has only 743 GB of Ram instead of 1GB announced in all advertising.
i saw lit on several app, son I believe lit ils reliable.
Someone knows why ?
Is it a bad news for me ( something wrong on my device?)
Thank you for any info

Also some of the RAM you can never use as is it used by the OS, hence why you don't see the full 1gb. Nothing is wrong with your device.
There's 1GB of RAM, 256MB of which is reserved for the GPU.

S7 Edge real Ram/Storage size?

Hi
just ran CpuZ on my Exynos model and it indicates:
Total Ram 3580MB (1190 available at the time of the test)
Internal storage 24.86GB
I know about the 1000 vs 1024 story, but even with that in mind, those figures look quiet far from the numbers announced (4GB & 32GB) by Samsung???

I'd also like an explanation. I've no doubt there are 4gb of memory soldered onto the motherboard, but I'd like to know why only 3.5gb are reported available.
In 32-bit days, before Lollipop and ArmV8 architecture, devices always reported a maximum of 3.5gb available because that was all that could be used on a 32-bit system. I'm wondering if this ram reporting issue is due to some kind of 32-bit limitation on our 64-bit devices.
If anyone really knows the technical reasons for this, I'd like to understand what's going on, just to satisfy my curiosity.

Is some of the RAM reserved for the graphics chip, like a PC has system RAM and video RAM for the GPU?
Some of the RAM around 512mb is allocated to the GPU, and for the storage, 8gb is used for android system partition
