[Q] [Need Help] Samsung Galaxy S2 or Laptop? - Galaxy S II General

Guys! I really need your help. Here at my place i got to ask permission from my parents to buy a phone this costly (its around INR 30,000 ). They usually dont agree to it as they think why to invest so much on a mobile phone and buy a laptop instead. You know the mentality.
But in the end they gave me the option to choose myself ie go for the laptop or the awesome SG2!!
And so now 'm split mind! What i am concerned about is whether you'l get a awesome laptop for 30k to play the latests games around? So if the answer is no i dont want to go for laptop because they are already two crapy laptops in my house tat cant play even 3years older games.
So in a nutshell, here is what i ask is 30K an worthy investment on a mobile phone as SG2? Do you think its pricy? Should i go for it? Later i dont want to feel like 'OMG! Did i just pay 30,000 to this thing?' lol
P.S 30k matter alot because 'm not a rich guy, i am puttin all my savings on it because i just love technology and would like to experience it. And this one is goin to be my first android phone (coming from nokia 5230 lol)
P.P.S god my hands started to pain after typin this post in my laggy phone!
P.P.P.S 'm already leanin towards SG2 right after typin this post how ever throw up your opinions!

Both are tools pick the one that does the tasks you require .
If you just want shiny new toy your choice 55 Million SGS2 users .

Get the gs2

Get the latest Samsung tab; you'd get the best of both.......if you can afford it of course.

If you already have crappy laptops for the important stuff, I'd say get a Galaxy S2.
Otherwise, get a laptop and a lower cost android phone.

Buy a 2nd Hand Laptop you might get it for 15000-20000 and than start saving for SGS2
If you Have a PC or Old Laptop than get SGS2

Depends on your needs m8, if you need a PC for work/school, movies or such i would recommend you the laptop, if you already have these and need a shiny awesome smart-phone to have it on you all the time go with the SGS2
Cheers

You don't need a laptop if you get the SGS2... the SGS2 can do about anything.

Harsha, Playing Games and Laptop can't come together unless you are paying above 70-75k for it, still I doubt if you can beat my Desktop(siggy) with that budgeted laptop. So I will say buy this phone, closed eyes, it's available at 28-29k, if it's high to you, wait a month or two, price will fall and come close to 25k for sure. Then buy it and buy a Netbook (AMD E350) which will cost you around 15-16k. You will have everything then you need. And Yes this phone is VFM imo, it will easily serve you a good 2-2½ years.
Regards.

I don't know how much 30k indian is but for around 800 euros I got a nice gaming laptop, well it plays the games I want on highest settings anyway (mostly total war games, including shogun2 and empire), I could have gotten an even more powerful laptop but these tend to be bigger and I wanted something a bit more portable

800 Euros mean 51,350 INR as per today's rate.
And you can play games on high, alright, can you play Crysis 2 or Metro 2033 at High or Extreme? What FPS you get? I bet not more than 35-40, right? Yes. I don't know if this is only me or not having this feeling that someone who wanna play some real games, i.e- DX11 with High Res and at Extreme settings, a Laptop, whatever powerful it specs, it won't be sufficient, so a gamer (let alone professionals) has to deal with a Desktop.

Buy SGS1
SGS2 is not worth stretching your limits. I bought my wife SGS1 and company provided me SGS2. Now it is nice and such, but it is not perfect. And if you spend for it amount that is a lot for you, then better don't. Read posts about yellow gradient, blue tint, overheating, scratching display, cracking display. Its all true.
My advice is, get SGS1. It is now less than 300eur for new (at least here) unbranded. It is has much better value for the money. And it still can run any app that you can find for android.

Negative. None of them are true, they don't even exist.
Please DO NOT post any false information and ruin peoples mind.

The SGII is a nice phone, but it's far from being an "investment". It's only a nice shiny toy and once you buy it, it's already lost a significant part of its value, at least half of its value once the next model comes out.
I have one because I broke my previous phone, but mostly because can afford it. If I didn't have a decent laptop, I'd focus on that first and make due with the phone I already have. If money is an issue, the laptop is immensely more important than a smartphone as far as I'm concerned, specially if you are a student.
I used to live in India a while back, and as far as I'm concerned, even if India is growing significantly, 500 EUR is still a formidable sum to most people there. It's kind of me spending 5000 EUR on a phone : it's obscene.

It's just a phone..once you get over the novelty of having a new phone it'll sit on your desk more than you'll use it
Especially if you're already coming from a decent Android phone.

To the OP
If you any SLIVER of doubt spending your savings on ANYTHING do NOT do it..especially having to ask total strangers to try to convince you either way. People who own it will rave about it. (Few will admit they made an expensive mistake and should have stuck with what they had prior) The "fresh and new shine" has not dulled yet. IN fact for me the Captiavte (once developed held on to that the .longest of any handset I ever owned. I like it MORE than when I first got it. )
Spend your money when YOU have the conviction without doubt it is well spent and you won't experience remorse.....
I don't have the SGS II yet because I still have a little doubt still brewing as to how much better it will be than the SGS I have already on GB 2.3.4. As time goes on the price will fall, Firmware will get updated any problems fixed, and the community development choices and methods increase...WIN WIN.....WIN by waiting and continuing research and reading....a lot.

In this case as with all new tech, waiting is advantageous on many levels.

Not for anything but EVERY handset I ever owned was prone to a cracking display, scratching displays, overheating, imperfection in colors. None of those "issues" would be a deal breaker for me buying any phone.

Don't kid yourself into believing that you would somehow be making an investment. You are actually trying to decide on what you should blow your savings: a mobile or a laptop, both of which you already own. If that's what you want to do then good luck to you, but at least be honest with yourself.

Thank you all of you for your valuable inputs. Reading the posts made me realise that its the personal requirement what matters although taking due knowledge about what you buy from forum like this.
Both a laptop and a smart phones has become an important part of todays lifestlye. However my routine has become so time fixed that i wont be having time to sit with my laptop. So used to spend a lot of time with my phone. So lot that i read around 15 novels in my device in a month lol
About thinking as an investment. Yes buyin a phone or any electionic stuff for that matter it cannot be considered as an investment. Technology changes every 6months. How useless an investment will it be without any monetary return. The only return is your personal satisfaction.
On the other note i was always keen on having the latests tech in my hand from many years. My budget was the problem in gettin it. After looking at android a year back it was mind blowing. I just wanted it. Since then had been updating myself with every android device that used to come up. Well it was my desire to have a high end android phone for just once.
So i have made up my mind to go for GS2 as for now i do not have time to spend with laptop anyways. I have decided that let me have a taste of the high end mobile tech. If i dont like it - well and good i wont be buyin any such phone again. But hoping it will amaze me beyond my belief.
And thank you all again for your inputs. Your opinion certainly helped me in deciding. Buying it today evening the GS2 and will sure post back how good it is and if at all it has any problems
By the way, this thread was meant for me to know whether spending that much of bucks was worth it. However i will be using the each and every features of a device to its full extent. Anyways GS2 certainly looks like a open mouth gadget and i am gonna get it
P.S. This post might feel like i am contradicting my OP. But hey i needed to decide for one of it; which you all opinions helped me to.
Edit: Already have two old laptops and a system.
Edit 2: This one will be the first android phone I will be laying my hands on propely.

Why did you buy now and not wait?

I'm just curious to get some opinions on why most of you bought the Galaxy S Tab now instead of waiting for better hardware, Honeycomb or any of the other fated reasons to wait?
Also if you choose to speak up as to why, can you also include whether or not you got it with a contract?
Thanks
Okay here's my answer . I know of nothing coming down the line that is worth waiting for...
The Tab seems to play videos fine, so I have no need of a faster CPU.
The screen is nice, and since AMOLED has failed (thus far atleast) to live up to the power consumption hype, and since I'm not a fan of unnatural "glowing" colors that's not a feature I'm particularly interested in either.
New versions of Android are coming out all the time, so that's never a good reason to wait (would be waiting forever in that case). Also Samsung has said Gingerbread is coming for the Tab. What makes honeycomb more wait-worthy than whatever comes after honeycomb again? I don't miss any tablet-features on the Tab, and the reviews that keep mentioning that Froyo is not tablet-optimized strangely never really mention in what way that is the case. It seems to fit perfectly on a 7" tablet as far as I can tell.
Battery life is very good, obviously pretty much completely dominated by the screen, and I see no reason to believe that's going to improve by a huge margin in the near future.
7" is the perfect size (since it fits in my pocket both in pants and jacket). The Tab is my only phone and does that job very well for my needs. Again can't think of anything coming down the line that's particularly revolutionary here either. The Tab is the perfect form-factor for me.
So I would actually rather be inclined to ask the opposite question. What is coming soon that should have made me wait?
Edit: And yes I got it with a 1-year contract (in Norway). About the same total price as at retail (~$950), except the contract includes 100 MB data per month for free.
Time is all you have in your life, the sooner you get it, the longer you can enjoy it . If you wait, when should you get one because there always will be better one and cheaper too in your future. Also, I predict when Android is optimized for Tablet, no tablet will have phone capability even though not many people like this big of a phone.
I had a galaxy S. Liked the phone but too many problems. The fact I sold my Galaxy S and only paid an extra £40 for my Tab that doesn't have the problems that plague the Galaxy S made it all worthwhile. Plus 7" screen doesn't hurt
Cause I cant stand the Ipad and its big brother attitude.
Because I'm very impatient
I am not an apple fan although I like the idea of the ipad I could never buy an apple. The ipad was to big for my needs, where as the tab is just the right size. I love the android os even though I have only used it for a month now
My need for a tab is to play movies and music, read emails, eboooks, surf the web and txt. This tab does all of this and much more.
I had the opportunity to do some overtime, the cash from which paid for my tab sim free.
And I love it.

My reasons
Ditto all of the above.
Had a tosh folio for a week, quite nice but screen poor and toshiba forgot to mention it wasn't finished! Waited for vega for too long and from what I have seen on the modaco thread today, I am glad I didn't.
Kept playing with the tab and my one concern, the price, got sorted when it dropped to £440.
It is great and i love it(but not in a sexual way!)
If I could pay $650 for a 7" phone/video/camera/music/web/eBook reader/navigation/tether and my two kids could enjoy it (playing zoodles) with me then I would do it Plus the fact that 7" is very comfortable in my hand vs a bigger size tablet.
I have the lightest, I believe, 13" laptop (2.9lbs) and the kids still want the tablet. Do I need it? No. Do I want it? Yes
I'm just a tech enthusiast and knew there was enough hype within the hacker community to expect that this thing would see some awesome howebrew ROMs and improvements in the near future. I like to mess around with my gadgets rather than settle for what features they came with. Waiting for honeycomb is no big deal for me either. This things works great as it is and cant wait until the first custom ROM gets released which I feel is just around the corner.

I got mine on Sprint. It was $400 if you signed a contract.
So far I love this thing. It's size is perfect for everything when you are at home.
I love anything tech related and I think the Tab has something really good going for it.
It was the right timing for me. I was looking into the HTC Desire HD while i was travelling in Taiwan. I found I love Android (compared to iPhone OS) when i had the HTC Desire. But i "desired" a larger screen. As well, i use the phone mainly for work. When I noticed the Tab had cellular capability, i decided to look for it instead of the Desire HD.
The 7" screen, portability, quick performance and great screen size (for my old eyes) was the payoff.
I dont have a contract as i bought it outright from a local taipei store.

This guy speaks the truth.
You never know when you are going to die (seriously). You can walk outside the door right now, get hit by a car (god forbid) and die. Lighting can hit you when you least expected. A tree can fall down on you. You can get sued by someone else. You can get framed for something you never did. You can get robed. So many things can happen when you least expect it.
So get your Galaxy Tab now before its too late.

Lets hear it for the early-adopter mantra!
And by the way, one reason Apple does so well is that there is a veritable ARMY of early-adopters who then sing the praises so that the wafflers and fence-sitters feel comfortable making a decision..or rather, having that decision made for them.
There's a certain comfort in that, and a certain amount of common sense, but if we were ruled by common sense, we'd still be banging rocks together as race.
man to me this is the best device out there right now,and this is coming from a dude that had every ihone/ipad that apple made.my last apple garbage was the iphone 4,i got tired of steve and apple telling me what i can and can't do with my device that i paid for,i was able to do more with my galaxy tab right out the box when i got did not even have to root/jailbreak it lol.i got the euro model unlock man i will never buy an other apple device ever again, and i hope some one here from sumsung is reading these comments on how not to **** with your customers on the next tab that they make.give us the full functions of the device or you will lose customers just like apple.
I'm going to be totally honest, I bought the Tab just for the hell of it. I wasn't in the market for a tablet, Ipad, Netbook or laptop I just happen to be at Best Buy and ran acrosss the Tab that they had on display. After doing that for about 2 mins I told the rep to get it for me. I also have the Evo and while I love my phone, the Tab is getting a little more love from me. Once Samsung comes out with the new Tab with better specs and the Amoled display im selling this one and get that. Until then I will continue to enjoy my purchase.

I got mine now because I waited long enough for it. I'm sure there will be other awesome tablets that will be cheeper with honeycomb and whatever else will come out but looking at how it is with every other device there will be a way to get those on here too.
I was sick and tired from my WM6.5 device. I had the Samsung Giorgio Armani.
I waited for a Samsung Galaxy with hardware keyboard. Then came the Galaxy Tab and I went to the shop and the moment I was using it I told the sales person I wanted to buy it. Still getting used to the Android environment but loving every moment.
Still looking for a way to get the left and right arrows on my keyboard and all would be perfect.

Stop complaining about buying an incomplete device in other sections and post them here. Getting tired of unhelpful info being thrown around on XDA.
Edit
I love my xoom and would never return it, just getting tired of stupid post and tools with no experience lol.
My only remorse is that I didn't buy it on the first day of release.

I am still on the fence. Just got mine a couple of days ago. I have had a handful of problems with apps FC'ing. What I think is really dumb is the case that Staples sells puts the power plug on the bottom so you cant use the Xoom propped up and have it plugged in at the same time.
I am also not convinced yet that I am a good candidate for a tablet. I create a lot of content but don't consume a lot of content. I still have to grab my laptop to do photo editing, faster text editing, video chatting (other than the GTalk app). I don't think a lot of my issues are specific to the Xoom or more Android 3.0 compatibility issues.
I think the vast majority of problems will be sorted out soon but I am not sure I need to pay full price to be an early adopter yet.

Love mine, don't plan on selling it anytime soon. And once Honeycomb matures, this thing will be a beast!
I'm about to return my xoom, primarily because the touchscreen stopped responding. Which is a gigantic problem on a buttonless device!!!!!!!!!
I think I am going to go for my money back, and possibly buy the 16gb version when it comes out to save a few bucks.
I am tempted to get an iPad2, which makes me feel like an asshole but all the good apps are on there now. However I am learning java and will hopefully have time to write some apps soon, thereby making an empty app store more of a positive than negative.
Before anyone flames me for thinking of getting an ipad, its just cause I feel like its the one form factor device where I might not care as much if its locked down (of course I will jailbreak it on day one if I get it, and will be dual-booting android on it sometime after the ASOP comes out, google...)
If all I want to do with this device is read/watch/consume content, and ipad has all the content right now, it kinda makes sense. And I am confident the ipad2 could be an awesome honeycomb device. With the amount of sales it has had there should be enough interest in that as a project. Enough to give the google all the more reason to hold off on releasing the source code. Dammit..

I don't know if I got a better xoom than most if the people here but I am freaking loving this thing. The screen is beautiful, the white's are actually white, something I have not seen on anything except the Apple devices. I get no lag whatsoever on my home screens after oc'ing to 1.5 governor set at interactive, and the stereo speakers are really nice. I absolutely love this thing. I got a sweet car dock from a dealer in the UK so I can use it as a bad ass head unit in my car, and when its hooked up to my system with great speakers and 2 12's in the trunk it sounds as good or better than my gf's iPhone 5, something I have never found with any other android device, even my inspire with srs sound. Yes, it has some bugs but for what I need it to do it does it wonderful. I am using it as a complete laptop replacement. I am actually thinking of selling my macbook pro. And I think we are not gonna get many people posting here about their gripes with the device because...
1. They want to start their own post for attention/tolling
2. They don't use the search button
3. There is far to much effort for them to actually read through a forum for the appropriate place to post

LMAO, i hate me some trolls, im made this post hoping it would attract them all but i guess i was wrong lol. stupid people. guess they never used a forum before.
I regret buying the Xoom because I should have waited for a tablet that is thinner, lighter, better screen, working micro sd slot, working 4G and has a pen input, a nornal micro usb that is rechargeable, and most importantly can play high profile .mkv 1080p without needing to do any conversion.
How come no company can do it right?
My biggest question is:
How come no European country make any tablets?
If Germany and Italy can create Mercedes, BMW, Farrari and Lamborghini, they can certainly make a measly sub $1,000 tech device.
keep on waiting. wait on, while we enjoy out Xoom. the best thing invented since the internet. Xoom, Xoom, Xoom...
May I offer these words of encouragement to anyone who has bought a Xoom but who hasn't been involved with Android and modded ROMS before?
The out of the box is not overly impressive when compared, as it inevitaly will be, with the iPad. It is disconcerting to have Forced Closes on a device costing what it does as regularly as one does. And there is not much eye-candy included either.
However, the hardware specs are so good that I have little doubt that the Xoom will be the equivalent of the HTC HD2 (which if you don't know started as a Windows Mobile 6 phone, got Froyo and then Gingerbread and now dual boots into Android or Windows Phone 7!) once the developers get their hands on the source code.
Hang onto your Xoom and you will see in the weeks to come that it will get better and better and, instead of having a gadget which is all shiny and cool for the first week and then becomes old news, you will have a gadget that keeps improving as each new ROM is released.

[Q] Keep or take back?

So, I just got my a500 a few days ago and I'm wondering if I should take it bac, either to wait until quadcore comes out ( next month? ) or to just get a galaxy 10.1. I'm wondering what your opinions are. As I do not see this tablet being worth $450 or even much more than $250 - though thats just me - ps. I do have custom rom and custom kernal, but even as typing this it's lagging, i also cant stand the front camera lag and the screen sorry to talk trash on this tablet, but anyway, what are your thoughts?
Take it back if you don't like it.
Pretty much with MrBoingy.
The Galaxy 10.1 is going to be like the iPad - thin and light and gorgeous .. until you start having to carry around and plug in the adapter for the memory card reader or the USB adapter or ...
The XDA forums in particular seem to be laggy as all get-out when typing on Android devices - you do NOT want to read a transcription of my internal conversation while trying to search these forums from my Droid phone last night.
All things considered though, if you aren't enjoying your tablet, bring it back while you can and try a different one. Tablets are, IMO, even more personal electronic devices than phones are, and you wouldn't stick with a phone you didn't like if you could return it still, would you?
+ 1 here. It sounds like you have already made up your mind. If you do not like the A55, then return it and get one you like. A purchase like this should not be made if you are unhappy with the product. Everyone has thier own like and dislikes. It does not mean they are wrong, that is thier opinion. Good luck with your choice.
I agreee when I buy something.even a nice dress or heels if I hesitate one time rather I like or not back to the store I go.my money is hard to come by when I spend it I better enjoy what I buy.
I say if your not happy with this tab wait for next generation as they all seem to very close in performance.
Good luck

Based on that alone, return it. You've already made your mind up about the tablet. To say it's not worth more than $250 means you must be extremely unhappy with it so definitely return it and enjoy your Galaxy Tab 10.1 or future Kalel device.

Did amazon not think it through?

Er.. So, Why did amazon bother to not add the android market, if they aren't going to block loading APKs, or actively try to prevent root?
My mom who knows nothing about android could be walked through that process...
Try asking B&N the same thing?
Amazon thought it through perfectly. They aren't selling or attempting to actually sell a mobile computing device (tablet). They are selling a next gen Kindle (PMP). Have a look at the Nook Color and the iPod Touch, then compare against a Galaxy Tab, Xoom, Thrive, iPad 2, and Transformer. See the difference?
If they wanted the Android Market, Google has strict requirements that would keep amazon from doing all the data mining they want to sell ad data to partners. If you have the Google Android Market on a device you make Google gets all the info..
I think....

cos they just made so you buy from amazon.com they make a $10 loss on each one, they hope to gain that from selling stuff via amazon.com

I've been curious about the nook as well.
On the other hand, even if not a lot, I figured they were making a bit more money off of their product than amazon who is potentially using their tablet as a loss leader.

It's all about "branding" the consumer. The earlier a company can get you to like/use their product the more likely it is you will continue to use them. The AF, by trying to restrict content and funnel only to their "approved" providers they can make dollars on volume. Apple does the same thing by getting their products into schools. Get 'em while their young! lol McDonald's does the same thing. What parent doesn't relent (often enough) to the protestations of their kid lamenting for the latest Happy Meal toy?
Downsides are galore. If a high school senior only knows Apple..they are severely limited in the marketplace (like it as not it's still a MS Business World). McDonald's? Fat kids with poor eating habits...Amazon Only Contest? One loses the richness of choice. See what I mean?
(I just might be a little cynical? lol)

You're dead on actually. This is a proven marketing method that works so well that various companies are banned from using it (tobacco, alcohol, etc). Apple's variant has been particularly successful because they didn't just get their product out to the kids. They also worked hard to convince the kids that without an Apple product, you weren't cool. Once this took hold, all Apple needed to do was continue to play upon that theme with each later device, as the "cool factor" propagates on its own, both forward and backward across generations. The older crowd by nature wants to appear to be young and hip, and the very young crowd want to appear older and cool. So, Apple wins across the board, from the elementary school almost all the way up to the retirees.

The iPhone 4S is a failure in the sense that it looks like and has the same appearance as the iPhone 4. No discernable COOL factor here. Buyers will have to wear a pin "This Is The 4S"

iPhone 1G, 3G, and 3GS all looked identical as well, but that didn't stop shoppers, nor the "cool" effect brought of having an "in" product. The appearance and technical excellence have little to nothing to do with it. "I have an iPhone," on the other hand does, and that's the brilliance behind Apple's variant on the "capture the hearts and minds of the young" marketing approach.
Er. Guys.
Let me say the iphone 4s may have failed in a few ways.
1. People expected an iphone 5. Even if it would have the exact same hardware.. people wanted to hear "iphone 5". Apple failed at marketing.. which is big since it is almost more of a marketing company than anything else.
2. A lot of people *were* hoping to see changes. Being totally honest.. the iphone design is tired in a lot of ways. The 3.5" screen is small despite the iphone being almost the same size as a 4" device. The problem is if they raise the size to 4" then it is just going to look gigantic..
Apple is in a bad situation honestly. If they change it, they alienate a lot of fans.
If they don't, the design just keeps looking older and older..

Myself, and the others that I know that are technically inclined are in complete agreement with you. On the flip side, not one of my friends or customers, that use their iPhones as status symbols more than anything else, feel that way. To them, it's a new iPhone, and they want it. Sadly, that bunch easily outnumbers the technically inclined. I feel that is pretty accurate for the market as a whole as well - those that know better are the minority by a long shot.
They thought it through, but with their own concept on reality
No Google market, the low storage and no microsd slot are all by design to force a bunch of lemmings (they appear to think we all are) into their revenue cloud.
Just wait till folks get on the road with these things and find out the cloud only hovers around a wifi connection
IMO, the Flyer is the current best 7" device for price and features. Compared to the Fire:
1. 8gb more storage
2. 512mb more ram
3. The SoC per Anandtech and my own practical tests performs better with Flash, games, video and everything else in between (I also have a Droid 3, which has 512mb ram and 4430 SoC to compare in a practical manner).
4. Microsd slot
5. GPS
6. BOTH markets
7. Install from other sources
8. Camera
9. Better build
The extra $100 seems a very sound investment for most folks.
The Fire IMO is a low end, second rate iPad wannabe, with a UI and storefront model to support it. CrabApple.

But it looks exactly the same as last year's model. Now in order to feel superior, they have to ask everyone holding one if they have the 4 or 4s. That's a lot of work.

One would think, right? Not the case. So far, I have but one iPhone lover that isn't budging on the update to the 4S, 30-40 that are getting it because it's new, and 8 that are converting from Android to iOS and are rather excited to get it.

Being totally honest, I must admit I am considering the Kindle fire, but I am waiting to see what else comes out first.
If I *only* wanted a tablet, spending 100$ more on a flyer would be ok.. But, I also have a few other things on my "christmas list" A few ps3 games (infamous2 and resistance3), a new comp case.. (obsidian 650d) and I would like a tablet so I can read manga somewhere besides at my computer screen.
So for me, it becomes an issue of practicality.. How much can I really afford to spend on a tablet in the near future?
I mean sure it *is* limited to the cloud.. however without the internet most devices become borderline useless anyway.

For what you say, Snow, the AF might well be ideal for what you seek. The again, let's all keep in mind that as of right now, the AF cannot really be considered an "android tablet" but more a "dedicated e-reader running android". That is if/until it is rooted by some of the marvelous devs on XDA.
My money's on the devs. lol

Depends on what you use. I have tons of games, videos and emulator roms. Use them while traveling and other area where wifi is no open or available.
This device is as limited as you could get.
As far as rooting, why? There is no space to do anything with it. Breach the Amazon cloud and the functionality is even less. Assuming inflation for my contract manufacturing days for connectors (buyer), the total cost for a sd slot port is 75 cents to add to design (components circuit bridge). This means probably $1.50 applied to sellers to maintain margin.
Could argue that is money they save, but I suggest the lack of one is FAR more costly, since it will sell well until people are savvy to no card expansion and the "forced" cloud use. They should have added the slot, but it is not there by design- they want cloud usage so they can data mine and also get revenue linked to their B class iTunes effort.
For someone not constrained on an extra $100, the Flyer is FAR better for reasons mentioned above (at least). Added: Heck, even my very non-tech wife does not want the Fire, due to no microsd slot. A key reason she also did not want an iPad either.

I have an iPod 4 64gb and like it a lot, but would not have a iPhone, since too constrained for me (ditto on an iPad). Still, the new models have the dual core and a 64gb option. Not too shabby for iPhone lovers who are media and game freaks.
The problem is the "retina display". If they increase the size, ditto on the display res. Probably too costly and not reliable enough for efficient yields from production. Cost curve for a 4" retina is probably evil (for now).

Buy a Galaxy Note now or wait.....and dispair

Well I have been reading about people asking the same questions for a while but my situation is a bit different.
My current device is a HD2 EU and my only 2 smartphones have been this one and the Xperia X1.
Both of them very good and I can't complaint about anything as they have served me well, well beyond what the manufacturers would like them to. This of course was only possible due to the tired-less work of all the developers here on XDA.
Well but now I have decided to sell my HD2 and I need a substitute. In 10 min the auction will end and by tomorrow I will not have a smartphone
As soon as the reviews of the Note started to show up I thought to myself that this one would be a device for me. I remember people saying that the HD2 was huge back in 2009 and today it is considered a normal sized device.
The question that concerns me is that I have am about to spend a lot of money on the Galaxy Note, right now that the Quad-Cores are coming out.
I normally buy my phones of eBay, but the price of it new with a 2 year warranty is almost the same (maybe 30 euros more expensive) than used in a very good condition.
Should I get something much worst like a the original Galaxy S of eBay and wait for the Note 2 to arrive. Or should I buy a new Note from Germany for 430 Euros?
Thank you all for your help.
I wouldn't wait for the Galaxy Note 2 because there's absolutely no rumor about it yet, so it might not get released very soon. And I would definitely not get a Galaxy S right now, because it's really outdated. Better go for a Note, S3 or even an S2.
I have a Galaxy S. I love it, but yeah it's outdated now. I am toying with the idea of a Note or waiting for a Note2 also. I am going to start doing my research now...
HD2 was a great device, when HTC was top of the game. Things have definitely changed.
I guess for your requirements (going for the best device currently) you have there options.
1. Galaxy note, the display is what makes this device, it is unbeatable.
2. HTC one x, again, I think HTC have had their day with market beating devices. I've seen a lot of reports that the new sense ui just doesn't work, ie causes fcs an awful lot. IM sure they'll update it.
3. Galaxy s 3. Personally I think it beats the HTC one x hands down.
But as a note owner, I would say that quad core just can't be utilised properly as yet, you'll see a lot of google reports saying that dual cores are actually still favoured for coping with more threads and therefore comparible performance over quad. If your looking for visuals as well as performance, the note can't be beat, I've looked at one alongside a galaxy nexus and there really isn't any comparison, you get sooo much more from the note.
That being said, nfc is pretty spectacular if it's somethings you'd use and that is the only thing I crave after.
It's without a doubt that there will be a lot of spectacular devices being released in upcoming months, probably most next gen performance handsets around September or October. It's a tough time to make a decision. All the best.

Thank you all for your quick replies. Especially SpiderTracks (+1), I will most probably just go and order mine from Germany (so that it has the ICS update and it's a bit cheaper).
Before Note came out I was considering getting a Tablet, but then it struck me. I have a desktop PC for heavy lifting, I have a Ultra portable 11,6 Notebook with 7h of battery for portability and when I am surfing in my living room, I have a Smartphone which can also surf reasonably well when needed so if I get a tablet I will have 4 devices that do +/- the same thing and I am only one .
After this reflection I went and sold my desktop PC, as I never got to use it now that I am a father and I have no time for gaming. I also sold my HD2 (the auction just finished so I already have some €€ to help me with the Note purchase).
I am drawn to the Galaxy Note not because it has a dual core CPU, but because it promises to be a hybrid between a tablet and a smatphone. If I can brows comfortably with it, read e-books and still use all the features that HD2 has like GPS, calling, texting, etc. I will be glad with it.
I am just a bit disappointed by the S-pen reviews, as I would love to use it as my minutes taker when I have complicated meetings, but if I can not write reliably and fast on it as many reviewers say, than it has not much use to me.

All this and more, took my HOX back after 3 days, combination of **** battery life and just general poor performance.
Have had my Note for 24 hours or so now and have to say im glad I paid the extra to get it.
Am slightly disappointed by the writing with the S Pen, though i'm sure that Samsung being Samsung wont let rest as it is, no doubt they will be some ROM work upcoming which will let you take advantage of this tool.
I have had a couple of strange looks in the office though while using it today, including at one point someone asking me if I had an iPad to my ear!!!

The truth is that I am disappointed with the Note. I think I was wrong because not bought a tablet (the phone is still a phone). I think I'll wait a little ... to wait WP8 ... and then I'll sell it.

German Notes dont come with ICS pre installed. SO you will have to kies Download or OTA the update - dont know if that works from india.
Also the official ICS update has LPY kernel and is therefore a risk of bricking your device.
For me, a simple factory reset from the settings menu bricked my Note.
I got my replacement today and installed the newest cm9 nightly without any problems. Thats also the only ICS rom wihtout the risky LPY kernel.
If i where you, i wouldn't buy from germany to get official ICS. Just buy where you can get it cheap.
By the way: i think you can write quite reliable with the S-pen. I was a bit disappointed too, as i thought the pressure sensitivity would be more noteable. But after installing sketchbook pro and ICS thats no issue anymore.
The samsung apps do quite e good job for quick memos. For long meeting memos you might want to get a fullscreen app with more specific features as the screen is not on the big side for writing.

i will suggest u really sincerely! Note is a really great device! it is an awesome piece of technology and i definitely would recommend this phone to everyone! but the fact is it is not everyday thing that u go for such an expensive phone. everyone knows the fact that samsung is UGLY at software updates! it does provide next to no support to its phones! i know many of you would be thinking this to be wrong and i should let u all know that would be just for the sake of commenting not the reality! this is the reality that samsung does not provide DESERVING support to its phones!
lets come to the topic! i would recommend u personally and sincerely that u should wait for either S3 or even the Next Galaxy Nexus phone! YES its about to come! it will be equipped with even more better GPU! the Mali-T604. u might also look for the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet! go for the Note if you have LOADS of money!!!
Note all the way.

I want to thank you all for your precious advice. I am considering it all along with my research, but I can't justify spending 380 euros on a phone that is not the Galaxy NOTE. For example the Nexus S is the same price as the German NOTE and the Galaxy SII is about -50 euros cheaper than the NOTE so I cannot justify getting them.
The HTC ONE X is about 100 euros more expensive (650 euros), and so far the reviews have not been great. It is not much smaller than the NOTE without its' flexibility and battery life.
So let’s hope that I get a good one without many bugs, nevertheless I have a 2 year guarantee which I intend to use if something is wrong.

Thank you for the information. Could you please elaborate a bit on it? I understand that it does not come with ICS pre-installed and that I would need to do the update myself, which is not a problem as it is an official one. This is the first time that I read that a phone can be bricked by flashing official updates without a powecut (which can be solved by a laptop) or the USB cord getting disconnected in the middle of the flashing process.
Do all the German G.NOTEs come with this bug or not? The difference in price from buying one in Belgium is about 50-100 euros cheaper to get it from Germany that is why I was considering it. As the ROM is multilingual, and I never use the manual anyway the only prerequisite is being unlocked which they are.
So if you could explain that a bit I would greatly appreciate it.

I don’t have loads of money, that is why I am approaching this purchase very cautiously, but as I explained in the beginning of this reply from the economic point of view it looks like a smart choice when compared to the rest.
All of my smartphones were bought second hand from eBay but in very good conditions, nevertheless the price of a G.Note on ebay that is in good condition is so close to the price of a new one from a reliable shop and a 2 year guarantee that I just can’t justify getting it anywhere else.
Let’s hope I won’t regret it in 2 or 3 months

I would like to share my Note experience.
I am using it now for about 2 months and I am really really very happy with it!
The Note is absolutely a unique phone, with its huge and wonderful display and its amazing S-pen.
It took me some time, but now I find myself using more the pen than the finger!
I am also starting again to write with my hand! that's so cool! It was already forgotten - just typing and typing... but now I can write!
So, when I want to send a more personal email, I do it on hand-write! It feels so natural - and there is no one that doesn't wonder about it!
And this experience ONLY the Note can offer!
It surely is not a phone for every one, because it is big! But I am big and have big hands and pockets, so for me is ok.
The decision is yours, but I would warmly recommend you to get your Note as soon as possible!
Regarding bricks, don't worry - just avoid doing factory reset or full wipes, and that's it! This forum is full of safe guides - so just follow them.
My Note I upgraded to ICS using Odin with stock FW (LPY) to avoid waranty void. So far I can say that the ICS upgrade gave the Note an even better experience, including the Premium apps for the S-pen.
The Note 2 will be probably announced just in October, so it means at least 6 months wait and, of course, higher prices too, especially now that the Note prices droped a lot, making it an incredible bargain for a premium phone it is!
Go for it!!!
