[Q] What Does ADW Stand For? - Android Software Development

so ive been using the default ADW.Launcher that comes with CM7 but i got interested in ADW EX. so i got it and i love it. but in the process i started wondering what the ADW in ADW.Launcher, EX, etc stood for. while this may seem like a silly question (and it is) it is still a mystery to me. try doing a search on google for "what does ADW stand for android" you will get soo much noise.
so any guesses or does someone actually know?
maybe: Android Default Widget?
Android Desktop Widget?

AnDerWeb I guess ;p The software developed by Anderweb

adw launcher ex or lpp?

So which of these launchers would u guys use? I'm using lpp atm and I'm thinking of buying adw.. But I would also like similar widgets to lpp like facebook, calender, bookmarks etc so if u guys know any alternatives to those please let me know
Lol all adw ex has is fancy transitions, and iphoney icon settings, pshhh and other not so awesome extra drawer settings. Still no support for custom docks like lpp, so nope for me. And lpp is faster and more easier to use, and a major app rewrite coming this month, which im waiting for.
Although adw ex is still worth buying, I just don't see the features that makes it worth that much. I would still use it, but at the end of the day for me, lpp wins.

This is the reason why lpp rocks
I think you better google and you find boat apps and not pay for any...i use boat and adw ex rocks but its lil slower and big minus is ...no widgets like llp!
Maybe I halp!
I prefer LPP im using adw ex at the moment
I use LauncherPro (Plus) and I tried ADWLauncher EX for some days. I think ADW tries to make too many things, so it's too "big", too many options. I almost go crazy.
ADW has lots of themes, and that's cool, but at least for me, LauncherPRO makes what it has to, and smoother.
But you should try it anyway! (But paying for just try... with 15 minutes market now... :S)
Using ADW EX on my Desire (with LeeDroid latest ROM) and it flies
Tried LP on my wifes wildfire a while back and it was very smooth too
Try both, they each have pros and cons.
Been using ADWEX and like the way you customise it but I have stopped using it because ADWnotifier does not work on my Wildfire. Tried endlessy but it just does not want to work. Lpp is good but prefer ADW if the notifier worked I would use it.
adw rocks. I've removed the nexus type dots and got 5 apps on bottom. Also changed the apps drawer to horizontal swipe . I liked launcher pro but ADW is so customisable.
Man i wish LPP and ADW made out and had a baby. Custom docks and the speed from LPP + the transitions and extra stuff from ADW would be win. , trying ADW ex atm and the only complaint i have is the lagginess when scrolling across the homescreens and also it's a bit difficult to resize the widgets haha.

Do you ADWnotifier ? does it work on your wildfire?
Yes it does, make sure you set the app it shows notification bubbles for in the adwnotifier settings, I'm using handcent and youlu.

Hi Kevin thanks for that , followed your instructions but still not showing notification .Must be doing something wrong because I dont even see then with LLP.
Saying all that ADW notifier is kinda working but instead of showing a number in the bubble theres a ? in the bubble , also what ever color I choose for the bubble it always turns up red .
Any ideas?

Launchers with CM7

I have been searching but unable to really find any good information on this. I will add I have never used a alternative launcher b4, so that is new to me.
First off, why does CM7 use ADW vs Launcher pro or stock gingerbread launcher?
Second, which launcher is "best" with CM7? Stock gingerbread, adw ex, or LPP (I know people will say adw since it comes with cm7, but humor me) I know it will vary by person, but just looking for some feedback and ideas from those who have used these b4. (I know people will also say to just try em, but I like to get feedback first. Call me crazy/weird; I know, its true)
EDIT: I cant even find LPP in market?
Thanks.

I have the paid version of AWD EX and the paid version of Launcher Pro.
Personally i like AWD EX alot better. I feel it is smoother, quicker, easier to use and customize.
THE only two things i like about Launcher Pro is the sliding Dock bar and the calendar widget. That's it. Everything else in my book is sub standard. I've also been using the Zeam Launcher alot and i like it. It's very simple easy to use and pretty darn snappy.
the gingerbread launcher... i tried the one from the market and didn't like it at all. no external options at all.
I have used all 3 for quite some time on varying platforms and each have their own pro's and con's.
Stock: Have never really cared for any of the stock launchers. Nothing in particular wrong with them, but it's kinda like eating a plain bagel...you know it could be better if...
ADW EX: I've used both ADW and ADW EX and found them both to be very nice launchers. Broader spectrum of Visually pleasing accents and widgets and in place of stock bring a flavor that is very appealing and customizable...
LPP: Current launcher because of all previous statements and then some. Very, very customizable and user friendly. Takes everything the stock launcher and ADW variations can do and then some.
I must say that I have been very partial to sense ui and LPP gets me as close to that interface as possible with lots of more optimaizations and such.
Once rooted, the sky is the limit!

Launcher talk

With some of the launcher talk recently I thought I'd ask if anyone's tried Go Launcher EX? Free from the market and IMO is better than Adw EX in someways. I really like adw's drawer but the roll transition between home screens of Go keeps me hooked and the ability to hide apps in the drawer. Ill show my phone to a buddy and automatically want me to give them some apks from mine. No. Support the dev and buy it. So instead of being a douche I can hide my good apps and the Go launcher app in the drawer and my point of supporting the dev happens anyways. I understand why the dev would put a home button in the drawer because most don't realize what they're downloading and can't figure out how to press the home button. But its nice to hide it.
In aosp's thread I know most of you are partial to adw and lpp and a few of us old zeam fans still exist but I'm really liking Go. Ymmv. Just thought I'd throw it out there.

You know I love adw EX, and just wanna let you know a couple things You can't "hide" apps in the drawer, BUT you can create a new "catalog" of a custom app list for your drawer, which effectively does the same thing, I have one called "apps" and one called "games". Also, I don't know what "roll" screen transition is, but if it's something like a 3D cube, the new update to 1.3.2 and higher in adw EX now includes that, and an "inverse" version of the same transition, it's pretty sweet.

/me is noob.
I was going through a "flash" withdrawal ... so, thought I would give GO a try yesterday. It's not bad, but I don't seem to use all the "customizations". Yes, Go does have some nice screen animations... but it's only good for a while, then you get bored. I much rather have something responsive over eye candy ;-).
So, I much rather use Zeam... light weight and does the job for me.
remember open home and home++ from back in the day lol
those were pretty awefull

Schweetness I didn't play around enough then. The roll effect is like throwing a sheet of paper. Its spins sort of center of the screen. Cosmetic but it's smooth and runs low. Hopefully the dev from adw gets my email about that effect. It's really the only thing keeping me to Go now that duce mentioned you can catalog the app drawer.

I think adw has that too. There's like 10 animations you can choose. They are:
- tilt
- fly in
- rotate
- zoom
- catalog
- tumble
- curve
- cards
- cube
- cube inverse
- wheel
I bet there's a youtube video, check it out.
Tumble was the closest one to it. Gonna try it out for a day or two and update. Ill probably be converted
Correction: Tumble is right on. I just had fling speed set too high and forgot the app drawer is the biggest improvement. Just awesome.

I have been converted. Adw ex is the new launcher of choice.

Launcher Pro Plus... Anyone using it on Tab 10.1?

Title says it all... Is anyone using LPP on their Gal Tab 10.1? Hows it working out for you?
I did it worked great. I used it with beautiful widgets and better cut.
had it working but goes into f/c all the time so took it out.
i've used it on the xoom with no probs. have it running on a transformer and on the gt10.1 and haven't had any fc's. works great to me.
Didn't try launcher pro, but in using adw launcher ex since someone on this forum mentioned it this morning.
Hate to admit, I didn't even bother looking into it before since I didn't think they would support honeycomb. Soooo much faster than stock.. stock honeycomb needs to be this quick flying through home screens or I'm never going back.
Anyone else use ADW? Major differences vs launcher pro in honeycomb? I've used all of the launchers on my phones before.

Have yet to try either, but am thinking about going with launcher pro... Going to give it a shot on my Infuse as well.

Lp Is awesome on mine

I can't wait for the tablet version of SPB Shell 3d.
How do we use these other launchers without removingthe HC notification bar at the bottom?

I searched "adw launcher ex" on the market and got some 500+ hits?!?
There has got to be an easier way to find apps on market???

I entered the same search string. There are a lot of matches, but "ADWLauncher EX" from AnderWeb was the very first one in the list, which is what you are looking for.
What I like about the Honeycomb launcher is how it keeps the icon spacing perfect regardless of which orientation the tablet is in. The Android 2.x based launchers mess up the spacing when you rotate the screen.
Are there any launchers that do a similar job with the icon spacing that the Honeycomb launcher does?

with LP you can adjust the spacing on the grid, and find the spacing that you like best.

Used LPP on the Xoom and now GT.
I changed the number of rows and columns to max (10 I think) and the spacing seems to stay correct in either orientation.
Also seems to get rid of all the lag with HC which I never noticed before due to going straight to LPP out of the box. Tried HC launcher on the GT for a couple of days but the lag was driving nuts! Just wish I could keep the larger icons.

I'm using ADW Launcher EX now (as of yesterday -- like you, learned from reading it on here).
It really is faster, smoother, better animations, etc. and you can have your vertical apps back! I never liked horizontal scroll for apps.
The ONLY downside, and it may be placebo, is that I think the stock widgets (bookmarks, gmail, calendar, etc.) scroll more slowly, but that is really the only downside that I can see -- at least those widgets work!
All in all, I'm now a proponent of aftermarket launchers for Honeycomb, which I never thought I would be.
Tried it and chnaged back, i didnt like the way the app draw looked. i prefured the stock set up....still think it needs more work. but on my phone thats all i rock!
ADW EX got auto-installed when I first set up the tab (it's what I use on my Evo so was in my stuff on market), and after messing with the stock launcher for a while I tried it, haven't looked back. Easier to get the look I want, plus seems quite a bit faster.

[Q] What launcher?

I'm curious. I have been running Launcher Pro Plus for a few weeks now and was wondering what other options are better as far as 'tweaking' goes. I keep noticing everyone seems to lean towards ADW Launcher - is it more configurable? Does anyone out there have any experience to mention about trying out the SPB Shell 3D? I recall I had SPB on my Palm Treo ages ago and it seemed to be a decent loader back then.. Not sure about now though and I'd rather get some community feedback before I go buying the thing.. or any other one for that matter..
Thanks!
Adw its my current launcher an my favorite be sure to get the ex version for full customizations

I recently moved from Adw to Go Launcher Ex. It has two features that Adw (AFAIK) does not have, which I like a lot:
circlular home screen pages; i.e. if you keep moving right on the last page you're back on the first one
more than one row in the dock; also circular (see above)
So out of the 100 or so people that have viewed this thread, not a single person has anything to say about spb shell 3d? I'll just assume its not worth even checking out then..

ADW/EX has endless scroll.
And ADW/EX has a hidden dock with a scroll feature.
FWIW, i use ADW/EX as my daily driver. It's fast, reliable and has little drain on the battery. I also have LPP [paid] and it's nice, quick, but IMHO feels like a Sense/ADW hybrid. Where as AWD is more AOSPish. I've also use Regina which IMHO is the most elaborate. Each workspace can have a wall paper of it's own, and the 3D effects are pretty snazzy.
Zeam launcher is BLAZING fast will little options. and little memory usage.
GoLauncher EX is to bloated for my liking.
and Shell is 15.00 bucks. I'm not spending that much for a launcher..... sorry.

LPP is my favorite, I have tried most launchers and LPP is the best. I like the customization of it, the swipe actions on the launcher doubles as a hidden launcher, you can hide the garbage in the app drawer, great for someone like me that is running stock gingerbread.
Tried them all and I still stay with ADW (ex) fast, stable and option packed. I liked GO at first but having to install everything I wanted separately is a pain and the last couple updates made it slow and power hungry.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using Tapatalk
I was loyal to LPP for 3rd party launcher for a long time, but recently tried Go Launcher Ex after hearing/reading about it forever but being reluctact to switch. Though I'm now running VU's native Sense 3.0 launcher, Go is my new go-to (pun intented) 3rd party launcher. Does everything LPP does and better IMO. Plus it's free, whereas you have to pay for LPP's widgets and advanced features. I found Go to be much smoother too, and it has the support of a full team of devs whereas LPP seems to have stopped being updated a while ago.
I usually prefer LPP for the included widgets and its blazing fast, but ADW EX does seem to have more customizable options and looks great. I have read some good reviews on the SPB Shell 3D and it looks really nice, but I just cant see myself spending $15 on a launcher...
I personally like ADW so many customizable options and tons of themes you can never get bored with. Go Launcher is pretty good too i use go sms n theme make so it all compliments each other but above all id go with adw extremely smooth practically feels like a stock launcher
I am personally still exploring all of these. I wish there was an easy way to copy everything from the stock launcher (shortcuts, widgets, etc.) over to one of these new ones. Is there?
Anyways, I tried ADW first, but it has never really worked well, always lagged, frozen, etc. I think Go Launcher seems pretty nice, as does Launcher Pro, but I'm still exploring.

in ADW and pretty much every other launcher, there is on option to increase the transition speeds of the homescreens and window animations. you can also download Spare Parts from the market and itll also improve the speed of the transitions. overclocking will help too
Well thanks for the info on all of these, I ended up purchasing ADW Ex and I'm really digging it. I think it's kind of odd that you have to install a separate service to get the global notifications on the dock icons for gmail/sms counts unread but I guess that's o.k. Otherwise it's looking great..

I still use Launcher Pro (and paid for it). I've started using the 'swipe up on icons in dock to launch other programs', which is a neat feature, but don't like that it has to be FC'd on boot with CM7.
LPP is smooth and has many options and SPB shell 3D is freaking awesome BUT, it sucks the life out of your battery like crazy (like horribly crazy).

I agree with you on all but your last statement. There is absolutely no need to overclock and run your battery anY harder. In fact, I run Underclocked and my transition speed is actually better than most people running stock or otherwise.
I had used LPP for a long tiMe but use ADW EX now. I used LPP mainly for the widgets it offered. Now that Android Pro Widgets is in the Market there is no need for LPP.
