[request] boot up to 4 different roms - Vibrant General

Hi guys, I found this thread, they can do this for the HTC Droid Icredible. They have options to boot up to different ROMs. It is awesome!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100777
Can someone do this for our Vibrant?

That looks awesome. Too bad i would never use it.

It would expect it to be very useful for rom testers. It be very nice if you can use it to test an update for a rom. If it can just mount any of CMW's backups, Oh that would be awesome and very useful.

Most likely not.
Sorry to say, but this is almost impossible for Galaxy S phones, it all depends on space in the rom partition of the phone. The Galaxy S phones only have enough for 1 rom.

This guy managed to do a dual boot at least on the Sprint Galaxy S Epic though which has much less internal storage AFAIK than the Captivate / Vibrant. Internal storage may not be an issue. It doesn't allow for switching between Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread though so forget that idea if you were hoping for that.

The tablet isn't out yet, but the FIRMWARE IS!
So here's Froyo for the tab http://www.multiupload.com/TZ88IED0TN
rar password is: samsung-firmwares.com
Lets see what you devs can dig out, for the improvement of our phones
GREAT FIND!!!! Can't wait to see what you guys can make of it. If most of the hardware is close enough to the same as far as the camera and what not we may even be able to port this, also I thought the tablet was supposed to have GSM radios in it as well. That would be fun lol. Good find though.

dont lose the faith buddy
two questions:
1) Has anyone tried to flash this yet just to see what it's like?
2) If someone has flashed it, have they been able to successfully revert to a stock captivate rom?
I'd love to be the guinea pig, but I wanna make sure this isn't a one-way deal
EDIT: Tried it, boots to a screen that looks like someone is trying to get a signal on an old tv with an antenna(grey and black lines). I didn't check if it went any further, just pulled the battery and flashed back to jh3

The tab has a 600x1024 resolution. Samsung firmwares web is wrong about this. This can be deduced from the dump of the fw. Apps are showing a 600x1024 layout, the shutdown animation pics all have a size of 600x1024 etc.
odd, all of the post install stuff looks for I9000 as well as the tablet... maybe this will flash to an I9000?

Already tried it on my GT-I9000, and i'm getting the same results as the others in this thread... aka it doesn't get post boot screen
I would be very surprised if just flashing this on the phones would work - the hardware must have enough differences that we'd need the get our drivers into the rom. If this was a source dump, then we'd be talking. It does bode well for Froyo on the phones if they have it working on the tablet already though.
Chit. I use my captivate like a tablet. I don't use it as a phone. I use my everyday phone the N1. I would love to have this ported to my captivate though. Then it will be my real samsung mini-tablet. LOL. Stupid me... I can wish though. I also wish someone could ported to our phones.

The resolution is 480x800 because Froyo doesn't support any higher.

We are just about in the same boat lol. Although I do put my sim card in my Captivate at night and use it as a phone, I've never taken it out with me for a full day (my Nexus One has that duty for now).
Hopefully soon I will be able to get my Captivate set up the way I want it, then it can be my daily driver.

maybe samsung made a custom build? i honestly have no idea as although the firmware they released points to 1024x600 you are right about froyo supporting only 800x480. weird
This may just be nonsense, but is there a .tar file with a stock i9000 kernel for one of the froyo builds? If so, might this work if someone flashed that .tar after this one? Just a thought.....
EDIT: Just for kicks, I flashed the stock captivate kernel after flashing the 2.2 tab rom, and I was able to get to the recovery menu where it failed to install/check for some package and wasn't able to complete the installation. Trying to boot afterwards resulted in my captivate being stuck at the at&t logo.....
EDIT2: Since I was doing something useless anyway, I flashed the xxjp3 froyo rom for the galaxy s,then the captivate kernel, and it goes into an infinite bootloop. Again, this was just for kicks. Flashed back to jh3 with no problems.
Ok... Well.... I managed to get into Recovery from flashing a stock zImage.tar.
What can I do from here? It won't get past the ATT logo otherwise...

Leaked 2.3 ROM FOR i9000 GALAXY S

This is a just leaked rom for the galaxy s. hopefully the devs can use it for the vibrant.
well even if not at least we know now that Samsung wasn't lying about March for the euro/Asian markets.
Nice, hopefully we will be able to use this to our advantage?
Also, couldn't we flash this since we now have the kernel that allow us to flash i900 ROMS? If we could just flash those files, then flash the kernel through Odin somehow it might work. Idk though, I'm no dev.

damb, this is so great, im thinking maybe tonight we might have a port for the vibrant, and i wonder if eugene and krylon know about this considering, it just today got leaked, a few hours ago.............. anyways, everyone post on this, lets get the hype going, we want this baby ported ASAP.. always thanks so much eugene and krylon, my brothers of galaxy android
So far from what i've read over there...
Looks like quadrant scores are not improved over 2.2 which is what i'm sure most people are hoping for. It also appears that the screen off animation is not present in the rom. It's also using Touchwiz 3.0 and not 4. Market is broken, and gingerbread keyboard also not included. Looks like an early beta build from what i've read.
**edit**
market is working, they have root access, and they are in the process of deodexing.
So far from what i've read over there...
damn double post. please delete

The kernel that allows us to flash i9000 ROMs is only 2.2 and 2.2.1 compatible. I'm pretty sure someone would have to build a new kernel to let us flash that or port the ROM over.
The crowds are getting restless over there. They're in an uproar about "this is missing" and "that is missing". One of the complaints is about the gingerbread wallpaper being missing. But these guys forget that our 2.1 devices didn't come with stock 2.1 walls. They instead came with whatever wallpapers samsung gave us. Overall it's starting to sound more complete than the first froyo leaks that we used to have which is reassuring. Some of the guys say that the leak is stable and everything is working on their devices. One of the nice improvements they're reporting is functioning hardware acceleration.
No TV-off?! NOooOoO!

Funny to see their behavior over it when we are just sinking our teeth into 2.2.1. Maybe its a good thing though.. I myself am so pleased with the performance boost of 2.2.1 that I'm in no rush to flash again but of course I'm in the minority on that.

Na I'm with you on that, running Bionix 1.3 and it really is just as fast as CM7 was for. Really the only thing that gingerbread had over this ROM is that the applications list loaded faster. Plus on this I have themes

ROMs for a N00b?

My wife has a VZW GTab 7, and I'd love to get something more stock Android on it; preferably Gingerbread (for the increased functionality). However, she's not a power user so I'd prefer something as bullet-proof as possible. I'd even be willing to keep it FroYo if stability on GB is an issue.
What would you guys think, from your experience, is the smoothest, fastest, most trouble free ROM?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that a GSM ROM? Is there a way to get that to work on the VZW Tab?
You are correct. Do not flash GSM stuff on your CDMA device.
Right now there are a few GB options that oldmacnut has been working on, but if you wait just a little longer (a few days probably) he should have CM7 up for public consumption and it could change the answer to your question.

I wouldn't count on oldmacnut releasing anything. He was caught red handed stealing credit for somebody eles releases (ie he rezipped somebody work and renamed it), after he was caught and his threads locked he acted like a little girl, threw a hissy fit and then deleted all his links.
Nevertheless his "leaked" GB rom for the Verizon Gtab is what I would recommend right now. Definitely better than running stock Froyo.

If you want TouchWiz, you can download TouchWiz 4 pack for MIUI, install MIUI, and install the pack. It might work (and might not).
Use some Google search to get the files. The pack is 161MB. I believe it's somewhere in Galaxy S or S2 sections.
Thanks Jack_R1 is that pack more miui though? Or does it run just like a touchwiz rom? Cause im not that MIUI friendly lol...
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda premium
This is a complete TouchWiz, except for system menus and dialogs.
You can try to install it over CM7, I believe there were reports of it working.
I remember seeing sense ROM's available for Samsung phones that normally ran Touchwiz. I suppose the reverse SHOULD be possible. Though porting a ROM to a phone with completely different hardware that no other touchwiz ROMs are available for would be a pain. No examples to learn from and so on.
Hmm. Any Devs with thoughts?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA App
It could be done, but it would be very very very hard and time consuming. EDT at one point was trying to port sense to the vibrant, but that really didnt end up as anything, so I would assume it would be the same porting TW to the mytouch. Im sure the right dev with enough time could get a port working.
sorry i cant answer your question but i have an alternative.
if you just want touchwiz 4 and UI that looks like SGSII, here:
1. flash CM7
2. find samsung theme for theme chooser (can be found here anyway)
3. install the theme
4. install the touchwiz 4 from here
5. you done, simple like that.

The same reason people put CM7 and/or MIUI on the MT4G. Maybe he doesn't want the bloated Sense and would rather have a TW4 GB UI that already has hardware accelerated launcher and much less bloat.
With that said, as nice as it'd be, it's not possible. The list goes on in what you would need to put TW4 on any phone that's not Samsung.

Galaxy S 1 or 2? Because there's a big difference. My gf's stock SGSII is the smoothest and fastest I've ever tried, faster than any custom ROM that I've ever tried. There's no TW4 for SGS1, just TW3.

Even if they could get it working I can imagine there would be a great risk of bricking your device. Anyways I don't think id like to be stuck on GE. As good as the firmware is the lack of choice and features would get pretty boring lol. They've managed to get duel boot working on the i9500 so I'm hope they i9505 will be soon to follow!

I'm keeping an eye on the below thread, it allows you to switch from GE to touchwiz based ROM, its in beta testing at the moment and it will hopefully be released for everyone soon. The handy thing is that your data is shared between both ROMs, which means apps installed on one ROM appear in the other and vice versa.
