Android and GPS - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

Howdy there, XDA. I've recently been flashing a lot of Android ROMs onto my HD2, but they all have the same problem, which I've been trying to get rid of, hence all of the flashing (And nearly bricking in some cases, whoops.)
Anywho- the problem is that when I load GPS in Google Maps, or any other app, it takes roughly 10 minutes to lock my position. At first I thought it was a hardware issue, but then I flashed a custom RUU and it works perfectly (Around 10 seconds) for WM6.5.
So, does anyone know of any solutions? Am I the only person this happens to? Thanks.
Oh, and sorry if this has been posted before, I did search 'GPS' into the forum, but nothing popped up.

Hi,
This might help:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=953630

As the other poster said, go to AngelDeath's GPS Fix thread. Also, if you are flashing a Cmylxgo Froyo ROM or one of the Gingerbread ROMs, you should also install Tytung's GPS v1.5 workaround found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1100114 Gives me a GPS lock in under 6 seconds. You are not the only one that has a phone that seems to take forever to get a lock. I would suspect that the gps.conf file is not optimized for your region. You may want to check. Most of these ROMs you flash are for the region of the developer. Some have taken it into account but not all and have added additional gps.conf file edit suggestions to address other regions.

My GPS has lost its touch, not working?

Hello people. Tried to search the forum for this but nothing came up. I have a swedish Xperia and have flashed it a couple of times with different roms but have now returned to stock spl and what I think is the original rom.
Didnt have problems with the GPS in the beginning and it started causing problems when I started flashing, working now and then. Now I have no function what so ever.
Anyone got an idea?
Is it possible to "update" the phone wia the sony ericsson update utility to the original rom, my roms doesnt feel so original, dont even have a calculator.
My GPS doesnt seem to work very well either.. Even with newly downloaded GPS Satellite info, it cant seem to find a lock :\

That's what Im saying. Have you been flashing yours or is it straight from the box?
Sticky a GPS thread?
I propose that one of these GPS problem threads be made sticky since we cannot simply search "GPS" here and the GPS problems seem to be accumulating.
With that said, I would have to say that my GPS performance is pretty terrible. At first, it felt like doing the QuickGPS thing and/or deleting the xtra.bin file helped. For the most part, though, getting a lock has proven quite sporadic. What should the expectation here be? Should I expect the GPS to work reliably indoors? What about if I am near a window? Why would it work in some buildings near a window and not in others?
My personal opinion is that the GPS should work within 15-20 feet of a window. Using Chartcross GPS Test, even when the GPS is locked, I am getting mostly yellow bars. I am not exactly sure what a good reading looks like on Chartcross, but there appears to be a 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% bar. Maybe the 25% bar is 100%? In any event, I rarely have a satellite that is getting above what I suspect to be 30%.
Is there a thread somewhere that details what the various fields mean and/or should read in Chartcross or a similar utility? I am coming up on my 30 days to return the phone, so if someone thinks that my device may be defective please speak up!
Thanks as always XDA-ers!

GPS doesn't work anymore, please help me!

hi everybody,
i have some problem with my magic's GPS;
after trying different rom, i came back on cursorsense in order to overclock the cpu with the latest kernel avaible from this forum...
everything seems to be ok but, a few day after, when i needed use copilot 8, gps doesn't work anymore:
no satellites are avaible, no signal (from copilot setup and from other apps like gps status or gps test).
i tried to restore some nandroid backup (with different rom, myhero, smoky cursorsense) but always copilot installs upgrade and gps is still not working...
also from google maps gps location doesn't work.
please help me,
gps is broken???
Ps sorry for my very poor english
thanks a lot
Flash the radio again and possibly with gps on (don't know why this counts, but they say it does). Talking about "with gps on", did you try to reboot with it being turned on ? Oh and btw this is not for dev section and it will probably moved soon...just to point out
yes i've already reboot with gps active but no effect...
but flashing the radio agai i need to wipe (or not?) how i can take gps turned on?
anyway i will try tomorrow morning...
thanks i will reply you.
ps sorry i visit often this forum but it was my first thread and i didn't klnow where to post it...
thanks!
hi, i've tried to flash again the radio today...
everything is ok... thank you a lot for the help or
if you prefere, hvala!
Thanks, goodbye
Mod. edit: not dev related, moved to general
sorry... thanks for putting in order... Bye
Well the subject of this thread IS dev-related, since it's an issue that affects many users of multiple roms, nobody knows what causes it or how to fix it, and is definitely not created by the user's ignorance or inability to read and follow instructions.
OTOH there already is a thread discussing it and it has produced little or no new insight. In short, it sometimes helps to reflash your radio (same version you're currently using), but depending on rom and carrier that fix may be short lived. You're also more likely to have a working GPS on a sense UI rom, but those have their own disadvantages. Users of some carriers rarely or never report GPS issues, while on other carriers these recur often.

GPS on latest TOMOUS official ROM (3.14)

Hello, my GPS has gone on strike since I flashed the latest official TMOUS ROM. After waiting 5+ min in Google Maps it never finds any satellites.
QuickGPS has no trouble downloading data.
Anyone else have this issue? Ideas?
Thanks!

I don't know if this is the same fore a T-mous device but let me explain.
On the EU/Asian model if peoples install the latest stock rom 3.14 in combination with HSPL, this latest one caused lot of problems. (Like limitation of program memory, WiFi/BH connections, bad phone behavior, ...)
Like I said I don't know if this is/will be the same on a T-Mous device, but maybe you can verified.
In case I'm wrong my apologize.
Thanks Kurt.
Well, for some reason it worked this afternoon! I had tried several days in a row in places where it previously worked, and nothing. Today I decided to try while walking around in a different area and it worked. So perhaps GPS has just gotten worse in the areas I normally test this. Or the phone itself became less sensitive.

GPS fix CM7 DHD

After endless searching for the gps solution i've found a solution.
I've tested it and can confirm it works.
All credits go to the developer of faster fix (Bernard Bekker)
So here are the steps:
1. Download the CM7 rom ( I'm currently running the built #15 nightly)
link:http://mirror.teamdouche.net/?device=ace
2. After installing the rom and gapps set it up as you normally would.
3. Download Fast Reboot from the market (and install it).
4. After installing the Fast Reboot, download Faster Fix from the market (and install it).
5. Now turn off the gps (not in the notification bar, but in settings).
menu/settings/location
6. Run Fast Reboot
7. Run Faster Fix, and select your country and hit Go
A pop up should say: for example "Done set to:nl.pool.ntp.org" as I live in the Netherlands.
8. Turn on your GPS and reboot.
Now when you use the Google Navigation you should have a fast and steady fix for your GPS.
This won't work if you turn off GPS and on again.
In this case you have to reboot your phone!!! Remember to turn on the GPS bevore you reboot your phone!
It is not nessesery to repeat steps 1 to 7, just 8.
Just tried this and got instant GPS lock when I walked outside of my office. THanks for posting this.
Seems to work. Thanks for the information.

Maybe I am doing something wrong but I just followed these instructions and when I rebooted the phone froze on the splash screen. Had to recover and flash my nand. Have you heard of this problem?
No, i never had this problem, mostly if you make a lot of changes, reboot in to recovery and flash a .zip and than reboot, you might end up with a bootloop in the splash screen.

Just to inform you guys, if you are using a gel case on your Desire HD, it's going to have a noticeable impact on the GPS lock time, from two minutes down to only several seconds.
I have confirmed this with my Case-Mate Gelli, and there is also a video by someone else on YouTube showing this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUyhxm2NtDU&feature=youtube_gdata_player
Faster Fix will still help with the lock time in both cases, so thanks to the original poster.
Unfortunately, it didn't work for me. I have an HTC Desire CDMA from USCC with CM7 RC4 running.
?permanent fix
It worked but is it a permanent fix or every time you want to you GPS do u have to turn it on then reboot to get it working again? Thanks
Evo4g / Sprint, worked pefect (saved me from a lot of reflashing)!
Tnx
I still find the GPS to be very poor on my DHD. updated the radio, applied this fix and it still takes a long time to lock, even when outside. Its almost as if agps isn't working at all.
Just a thing to test
Menu>settings>applications>development
Make sure "Allow mock locations" isn't checked
I suffered with terrible GPS reception for weeks until I noticed this was checked. Now I get on average 3-7 yards accuracy, fixing in about 3 seconds
Also didnt work for me. Have flashed a few different Radios and ROM's, does anyone know a highly recommended Radio for CM7 and gps? (preferably on UK Orange if that matters / makes a difference to gps).

have you updated the RIL that applys to your radio?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1040986
also have you installed gps status from the market?
go into tools and reset the data
both those worked for me
Worked well for me! Got an instant lock in my house after doing it. Used to take about 2 minutes outside. Cheers
Hello!
What is in the gapps file and how do you install them?
Is it possible to use them with another rom or is they locket to CM7HD?
For the moment I am on RCmixHD.
Regards
So we can use RIL on CM7?? Wasn't there some problems??

GPS not working on any ROM...only stock+stock kernel

Hello all,
I've finally decided to take this problem to the entire forum.
I am a rom-crack addict and have successfully installed dozens of roms on all my devices. But i'm having trouble with the GPS on both of my TF101's.
Every rom i've tried works perfectly except for the GPS.
I can only get GPS working with a stock install + stock kernel (9.2.1.24 & 27).
I've got my TF101 installed on my car dash and really need GPS.
I've tried EVERY rom available and tried all types of fixes. here's what i've tried:
- tried these roms: CM9, CM10, EOS2, EOS3, megatron, revolver, AOSP, AOKP, Revolution HD, etc.
- tried Clockworkmod & TWRP....format system, wipe system, wipe cache, wipe dalvik prior to every rom install.
- used the kernel that comes with the roms.
- installed .24 or .27 kernel's over the roms (no gps unless i revert from rom to stock with these kernels)
- tried Guvenors kernels (all versions),
- installed AGPS flash fix (mount system, install) (even modified build.prop with GPS settings...although i didn't see any of the modified code lines that AGPS was supposed to install in build.prop.)
- let the rom settle for 1 hour each time i install
- tried the regional reset app available on the market
- tried to get satellite fix indoors and outdoors
I haven't tried these:
- snort salt and throw the lime over my left shoulder (can't find limes b/c out of season)
- trade up for a Galaxy Tab
Logically, if none of the roms work on my tf101, then there's something wrong with my tf101.
but i have 2 tf101's. no luck on both.
and i can get great GPS on stock 9.1.2.24 & 27.
thinking of getting an external bluetooth gps receiver, but don't want to spend another $100.
not having a rom on my tf101 sucks almost as bad as having an ipad.
can anyone dig deep and help me solve this problem?
thank you, thank you.
I have the exact same problem. I haven't resorted to stock, but I have tried many, many roms. No GPS love for me, either.

I have heard this before from some peoples, no GPS with any custom ROM. GPS work for me on all ROM I've tried. Currently on Megatron with Guevors v21.5. The kernel that's been modified by ricardopvz.
Have toy tried the app "Faster Sat Fixes"?
I had good GPS on stock, OK on ARHD and Revolver ( faster fix helped with these ) and nothing no matter what I do with my ASOP JB ROM I'm currently on.

Yes, i've tried faster sat fixes. believe that just speeds up the satellite aquisition. i've left my tf101 searching for sats for 24 hours inside and 4 hours outside on my deck. both with fast fix and without.
since stock works perfectly on both of my tf101's, it must be the rom or kernel.
i've literally made a variables matrix of my attempts...it's 3 pages long. i've tried every combination of installation proceedures, rom types, kernal types, app fixes, build.prop modifications, etc. IE: a+b, a+c, a+d, a+e, a+f - b+c, b+d, b+e, b+f - c+d, c+e, etc.
there must be some coding variable that is missing or not correct in all the tf101 roms. something variable that some pads like and some don't.
I used "1-Click Transformer Root_1.1" (says it uses the Niloj TF300 Exploit) to root my tf101's.
could that introduce a variable that the rom's/kernel's don't like?
Had the same problem with all custom roms I tried so far, till an hour ago. I am using latest eos with kat 1.0.1 and no matter what I tried i couldn't make it to fix position. With gps essential it could see 4 to 5 sats but no fix. I tried gpsfix and fastfix as well with no luck. Then I accidentally left the tablet at my balcony with gpsfix left opened and left the house. I when I came back after an hour I think, I had a fix with 6 sats. From that time I had rebooted several times, turn on/off gps several times and I always get a fix within seconds with a-gps turned off. I also got the tablet to another location (where I'm right now). Turned on the tab, and in 10 secs I got a fix. I hope it's solved. So my suggestion, give it some time for the first fix.
Sent from my Transformer TF101 using Tapatalk 2
thanks, ark...i'll give it a try in a few hours...busy now.
if you'd have told me to hold the tf101 in my left hand and throw a dead cat over my right shoulder...i would have tried it.
will let you know.
thanks for the effort.
nope...no joy.
it is certainly recognizing more satellites, but i've only achieved lock briefly a few times. no where close to being "useable".
Unfortunately I'll have to agree.it's unusable. I tried it in the car and it couldn't keep the fix.
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2
Success!!! Yes, yes!
although it took another hunderd dollars, but i acheive full lock (hehe..) in seconds.
i bought the Universal Bluetooth GPS receiver by Dual, followed the instructions, paired it with my tf101, allowed 'mock locations' in system settings, downloaded "Bluetooth GPS" app from store, made 2 app setting changes, and.....voila!...GPS lock instantaneously.
Tried this on ICS Megatron & Revolver - JellyBean TeamEOS nightlies. all works fine!
yea, it's another $100, but it now makes my $1000 tablet useful.
hope this helps others.
Well, my situation improved. I used the ARHD superwipe-full script, then formatted each partition a second time for good measure. I flashed CM9.1.0 just to check CM's progress. I can at least see satellites now (nothing before), but it would be pointless to try and navigate this way since it doesn't lock very long. GPS-Status shows 5-6 satellites, locking on and off after 20-30 seconds of searching, and sometimes dropping out. When I was on stock HC and stock ICS, it would lock startlingly fast, with 10-12 satellites within 5-10 seconds.

I followed what you did and got the same results.
i would really like to return the external bluetooth gps receiver and use the one i paid for in the tf101.
I am at a loss as to what to try next. i have tried everything.
hopefully someone will stumble across this thread and post a solution.
Buehler?

Not much chatter on the CM threads about it either. I just set mine up in my car too and I really need that GPS too. Hopefully a fix can be found soon!
The only time I get any kind of location lock is when I'm connected to WiFi. Not good enough.
I'm a pain in the ass and I don't want to go back to stock because everything else in CM10 is working so nicely!

try the external bluetooth gps receiver made by Dual. it works with my tf101 perfectly...locks in 1-2 seconds. USB powered for your car.
it's $100 but chances are you've spent quite a bit installing it to this point...what's another hunday?
with all the developers do when they write these roms, you'd think someone could solve this in 10minutes.
maybe someone will think of something or devote some time to solving.
Same problem.- wish there was a fix.

The trick for me, whether on stock iCS or custom ICS, JB, has been to take a stock ROM, extract it to directory, blobunpack it, if necessary, and do the same with whatever custom ROM you want to use. You have to get to the ramdisk, where you can change the gps related settings in init.ventana.rc to match the same user and group and permissions as in the stock ROM. On JB, I compared to the TF300T JB firmware and made a merge of the settings there with the stock ICS settings. Also, use the /etc/gps.conf from stock ICS, where there is only 1 line setting an NTP server. Asus seems to have gotten the gps right on stock firmware. Works like a charm for me. After the changes, you just repack the kernel and ramdisk, blobpack it back to a blob and recompress it with the 2 original folders and reflash and you will have working gps, barring broken hardware, of course. If you are on a stock based ICS ROM, you should be able to flash one of appropriate stock ICS kernels I have posted elsewhere in the development forum and achieve the same thing, although you will still have to manually make /etc/gps.conf match the stock setting.
I did this process earlier with K900's Jelly Bean AOKP ROM and now gps is working like a charm. It worked somewhat before, just very slowly and couldn't hold a fix very well. The first time takes a few minutes, but after that, I see 8 to 10 sats and get a fix in seconds, sometimes fixed to 8 at a time.

SidneyK,
many thanks for your input!!! so there may be a chance?!
I'm a dedicated crackflasher, but have never compiled, blobunpacked, etc.
I know it's alot to ask, but could you possibly post a detailed process? what apps to use, exactly what steps, etc.
I've had many, many PM's from members who are suffering this.
No rush, we're patient for news like this.

Well, I don't use PayPal, so don't worry about the beer. My wife had a PayPal account she hadn't used for years and it got hacked, so I don't trust them. When I get time, I'll try to put something together with the relevant links to threads with the supporting tools and a run through. It's kind of convoluted since everything isn't all in one place, but once you understand how the different pieces go together, then it makes sense. Mostly just remembering to do each part in the right order. Once you have the tools though, you'll see that you can make other changes like this or even further customize any ROM yourself the way you want it or to experiment with things.

Very much apprecieated.
just by your brief overview, it seemed logical. but i'm sure there are many nuances that go with it.
i'm also a cracktinkerer and can't wait to really see how rom's tick.
whenever you can post it, you'll gain even more fans.
thanks again.
