Post ROMS to Usenet - EVO 4G General

Hello everyone,
I've been with XDA for over a year now (almost 2 years) and I was thinking about how I could contribute to this awesome community. I really don't know anything about creating ROMS, or scripts, or kernels....but I do know some things about Usenet. So, my question would be, should I create a newsgroup for the EVO, and then post the roms to that newsgroup? I would ask permission from the ROM creators first, and then I would post the NZB files so people that have access to Usenet could grab them.
Thoughts?

Why? What we do here works fine.

Hello Im a noob great well not really, but to posting yes, Id like to post in the dev section, but I guess too many idiots ask stupid questions so I guess Ill get my post count to 10, lol here's 1

To answer why: Most ROMS are posted via Rapidshare or something like that. I don't have a rapidshare account, nor do I want to get one. I do have access to newsgroups, and because my download speed is unmatched on newsgroups, that why I would post there. Also, once it's posted, the retention is a long time (1100 days for my usenet account).

FVUK yes.
up it to usenet....
WAY FASTER speeds and better organized
If you do it, please upload the server address
thanks

Well, I was thinking about doing one better than that and just posting/hosting the NZB files

Well, definitely check with devs first, as I know some take tracking download counts seriously. As for Rapidshare or any of the other file sharing sites, I don't have an account on any of them, but I download stuff just fine.

I download from those sites as well. What I'm looking at is a way I can contribute to the community....If I can spend time uploading different ROMS, and if it helps spread the word.....then I feel like I did something.....

Do it. Please.
Setup an nzb site and organize the rom's and radio
If you do it, ill donate some. $$ for your troubles.
Usenet would be awesome. And fast.
I really despise file sharing sites..too slow

I received permission from Myn to post Synergy RC1 to Usenet. I posted the ROM to alt.binaries.android. Attached is a zip of the .nzb file. People that dabble with Usenet, please download and let me know if it's all good.
Thanks!

Hey guys,
As i see some messages about custom roms becoming possible let me bring the following back to your attention.
I've been using XDA developers for ages and lately I've been getting more and more annoyed with the fact rapidshare is used so much. The waiting and the speed are just not what you would like.
My hosting offers me 7.5 terabyte bandwidth to waste a month so I've set up an ugly but hopefully effective file-upload script on:
http://bjornbrala.com/downloads/
If you register you will be able to upload files. FTP access is also possible, but that i will need to setup separately. PM me (or email me preferably) for an account.
I hope dev's will start and use this, it free, and fast and a lot better for your users.
wow thanks man! I'm a rapidshare premium user but a free alternative is always a better solution
really really hope chefs will start putting their cooked roms there...
thanks again!!
A note, i often get questions if there are download statistics available. Yes there are
Another bump. If you want a category made for your rom, message me and i will, when you register i will make you moderator for your own category making it easy to upload and confirm file uploads.
thanks - thats sounds really good
regards
anja31
7.5Tb, that's plain ridiculous. Thanks for offering it to the community.
Hope it's backed up or there'll be some serious tears!
I hope people start using this, because rapidshare sucks.
7.5TB o_o
I make no claims what so ever about backups But in the 4 years i have had this account there have never been any serious problems so i guess it should be ok.
Anyways, i'll post up a little step plan for registring as a new uploader. Because you can upload files but cannot create your own categories, i will need to do that. Just register and PM me the name of the category you like to have and i will make it and make your account moderator, then you can upload files and confirm them yourself.
Also, if anyone knows of some nice scripts for uploads/handling of uploads please suggest, this RW Download was the only one i could find that is free

ROM makers: Want a different host for your files?

For the last 6 months I've been hosting files for developers in the Eris section. I made the site to people wouldn't have to use all that MultiUpload crap, got sick of the waiting 60 seconds to download a file, entering a verification code, etc etc.
Anyways, the site's worked well. You can direct link to your files, upload everything via a simple web interface.
I just thought I'd offer the site to developers in other forums now.
http://android.grdlock.net
Anyways, if you're interested in using it to host your files, just make a username on the site real quick, shoot me a PM, and I'll give it upload permissions.
And no, this isn't an advertisement or anything. People in the Eris section have just liked using the website over MultiUpload, so I thought I'd offer to let other people use my bandwidth as well.
I got yelled at by the mods for posting something similar a while back. Seems like they don't like you pimping your site, even though I wasn't making any money off it either.

The mods in the Eris section fully approved and encouraged it. They said as long as it's not a site that would compete with XDA (ie: a site with news, a forum, tutorials, etc) it was fine, and it's not... it's just a file host, nothing more.
If mods in this section don't like it, I apologize, feel free to delete the thread.
Damn, you beat me by like less than a day... I just bought androidfiles.org to do the same kind of thing with.
Now you can use that as a redirect to Gridlock's site, lol.
GrdLock is the tits. I was an Eris user. no doubt the man.
From an end user's standpoint I say...thanks.

All ROM cookers: Please torrent your ROM´s! No Megaupload please

Hi
For many of us, we live behind a digital wall called censorship. And we happen to have to use tools like TOR etc to get access to many homepages. Unfortunately that means that sites like Megaupload thinks all of us TOR users etc are the same downloader, so they tell us we can not use their servers.
Ergo, many many many of us can not D/L your ROM´s.
If you post new ROM´s, please submit torrents for the billions of us that does not have a free internet.
Sincerely yours - one of the billions of blocked Megaupload users.
Plus one....
Great idea!
I LOL:ed at the title of this thread, it sounds like an adult movie .. the ROM cockers! =)

plus 1 id be pissed if i could not download.
This thread has to win the "Thread title of the year award"
Plus one... i hate megaupload but haven't choice.
There are other solutions, but they are not freee....
A great idea. It's something I've thought about before but, thinking about it, you would have to rely on everyone to seed the files to make sure we all had (pretty much) instant access.
This is my understanding of it anyways.
Just throwing it out there but another area on the forums for torrents would be sweet but I can't imagine the work that would create!
Much respect to all Devs and Site Admin.
I agree, and love the title of this thread, hail ROM Cockers!!!
That's not ideal. Not everyone has the bandwidth to seed a single file. And like majority of torrent users they do not seed at all.

sign +1 ololo
i won't be downloading from torrents. but, why the hassle when v-b-n has a server where cookers can put their files? and he's not saying "pay if you want to use it" it was free last time i checked. So, instead of inventing new solutions, use what this forum has to offer. And, if you want to improve, donate to him, so he can maintain the server
HAHAHA! Rom cockers!
Winner
+1, Great idea.
I've often wondered why torrents have not been utilised here. Considering that we're all phone enthusiasts here it's fairly likely that the majority of us are general tech enthusiasts too and therefor would have a decent collective bandwidth to serve these ROMs. Personally I have quite a considerably large pipe and I'm more than happy to seed anything that is legally distributable.
I think the argument you are making here is valid, but torrents is by no means a good way to distribute builds as they are frequently upgraded. You'll end up with hundreds of dead torrents in a week...

Rom builders already have the VBN server with direct downloading so, no need for torrent nor useless miseplled thraeds
I find within 24 hours the VBN site is overloaded and no more download slots avail.
However I am willing to host a tracker server however I have very limited bandwidth for uploads so speed will struggle at the start.
I am however willing to build it on a linux based server (Eg LAMP) as as first pass and then if someone can organize hosting of a smallish VM then the entire VM can be moved from there onwards
It should be possible to script in a way that a cook only has to upload his rom to the site via FTP and it will automatically create a tracker/torrent from it.
Lots of "maybe's" and "should's" but willing to help where I can.
I am 100% against it!!! I do not like torrents from the day one and if someone wants them - well, post them yourself and contribute a group that wants to see torrents.
Megaupload is much more reliable and if you cannot wait 40-50 seconds to download the build, then too bad...
Sorry - Im not trying to be negative but it is pretty selfish to make a thread and state "All ROM cockers: Please torrent your ROM´s! No Megaupload please" ... no go AT ALL!!!
So - I am the "minus one" ...
I think they are saying that Megaupload blocks then due to national firewall and work arounds?
I agree with not liking torrent at all. Megaupload is as good as it gets with downloading. Why cant you guys use Megaupload?
I also do agree that VBN is over capacity most of the time, which will not let you download if it is.

I wonder why there is no responses from the chefs or devs
In past time, there was VBN server. It makes us (users) easier to download the rom.
Maybe you should post in in the ROM developement section
Make the title eye catching
Cheers

Still testing upload frontend.
Some help, testing and feedback is welcome.
Thanks.
posting it in the dev section is likely to get it moved
Hey xokos,
I checked out your site awsome man really great idea. I am voting for this to be posted in the XDA Portal. I have a copy of the official T-Mobile ROM if you would like it up loaded to your site. Just PM me with instructoins on how to upload it if you want me to.
Nice idea. Hopefully devs will jump into this.
Cool idea! Would love to see devs are using this site. Thank you very much for this idea and good luck.
Voted to the front page.
The page is stopped...
Will try to upload all the rom's, will take some time but hope to call more users.
Bummer man that could be a really useful site to devs and users of HD2.
Great Idea
Thanks for this , hope it takes off
Mark
Still no help from users or dev's...
I have a few files that i have found usefull, but they were not programed by me, and i think most of them came from this site, so i guess they could be found by anyone anyhow. You want them?
The point isn't if everybody can find the files, it's to get them all together(as many as possible), everything to the HD2, rom's, radios and so on...

Have you got the upload function fixed yet? I still think you have a great idea here with this site. A central website for just grabing a download or uploading something to share with someone else that you don't have to go through any waiting or bull crap adds.

Simple. During the horrible time SOPA was consider for legislation, many of the file upload sites on the internet went dark. This project aims at bringing all those files back together and store them on a more reliable place. But how can I help?
I'm glad you ask. You may already be in possession of the files. Or know how to fish for SBF. Maybe you are a cheesecaking fool with tons of OTA's. Maybe you created fruit cakes for older builds. Going out on a date with my gorgeous gf and be back in a few to spent the night programming project cheesecake. will be on irc and twitter. hope to see yall on irc. peace.
I hope you have a good data plan Sam. I just uploaded a bunch of files that I had and from CaelanT's link. I also searched the internet for recent sbf files since most of the links available on xda are dead. A couple were probably duplicates, but the file sizes were different so I decided to upload them.
What about custom ROMs? Any interest in preserving them?
Edit:
All the files from CaelanT's link have been uploaded.

I have a link full of sbf files but, beside don't really know how to make CWM-ready zip files out of them, the files belog to daywalker04 so I'll first of all ask him permission, then I'll post it here hoping you can use them more wisely!!!

I noticed. There are some really good files there! But the download speeds are super slow (~50 KB/sec) if you are not a member. It would have taken 3-4 hours to download one file. If we can't find the files anywhere else, I'll join for a month.
