So I took delivery of my shiny new Nexus 4 yesterday at work and as soon as I got in the car I paired up the bluetooth. Then somebody called me and the steering wheel controls wouldn't answer the phone. I've tested this several times now and that seems to always be the case. If I initiate a call from the phone though, it does relay the call over the bluetooth.
Secondly, the car cannot see the contacts in the phone. It just either tells me that 'no phonebook is available' or 'the phonebook is empty'. The car has never asked me for permission to read the phone book, even though I have unpaired, factory defaulted (the car B/T) and re-paired several times.
I had similar issues with my HTC Sensation when running 4.2 but the Sensation and car worked flawlessly together when using a Sense-based ROM.
Does anybody have any fixes for these issues? Not being able to use the car controls is a bit of killer to be honest. Not displaying the phone book is not great but at least if the car can control the phone I can use it to answer calls. I tried installing Bluetooth Phonebook but it didn't seem to make any difference.
Radio out car if using stock radio would really help here. I have JVC in the double din in the Saab and an eclipse in the wrx. JVC works as designed most of the time after the new update. Eclipse does not support PBA protocol. But controls work (minus pause on Google play app)

This one is still frustrating me. I have discovered that if I initiate or answer a call on the phone itself, it plays through the car speakers perfectly but it isn't possible to control the phone from the car controls.
I believe the problem is at least in part that I haven't had the pop-up on the phone with the car asking for permission - I did see it once after leaving the car but when I sent to activate it, the prompt disappeared.
So my question is still: Is there a way to force that permission setting, and if not does anybody have a workaround?

I've had my Nexus 4 for about a month. It worked fine 100% with my car till (coincidentally??) I went from the stock kernel to faux123's.
I have a 2008 Audi A6, which only allows voice - no option for streaming music across unfortunately. The phone paired, I Ok'ed the request to share call history, checked the "don't ask again", and I could make and receive calls from the car's controls. So far so good, just like my previous Gingerbread phone.
I don't think the new kernel was to blame - could it have been a google apps update? - but since then I can delete and re-pair the phone, I OK the share call history and "don't ask again" option, BUT the car's controls don't initiate or answer calls.
I went back to the stock kernel, tried Franco's, just moved to ParanoidAndroid's latest ROM+kernel - with all the necessary wipes - still no luck with getting the car's controls to work. I can start a call from the phone, or answer an incoming call on the phone, and it will play through the speakers, but it's a royal PITA, as well as illegal and dangerous.
So, I guess it ain't the kernel, but I just can't work out what changed. I have frozen Google+, Google Search, plenty of reboots and wiping the pairing off both devices.
I've done a good few searches, and it seems Google have never had a really clean bluetooth stack, and Volkswagens/Audis seem to suffer more than others.
But my Desire HD worked like a dream

I have no problems with bluetooth, calling or music streaming, in my 2013 Ford Focus using Ford SYNC. I'm stock 4.2.2.
Check tune2air BT adapter from viseeousa.com. My mom let me use her car and I want to stream music in it but I can't seem to do it in her car. So I found a solution, bought the WMA3000A with built-in AMI cable and i have BT steaming, and able to control, read, ,display music using original steering wheel and head unit controls. You can also check and try the 30pin WMA1000 model which plugs into any 30pin iPod integration cable.
Hi folks, I've been having this very frustrating problem with A2DP that I can't seem to find anywhere else on the forums.
My bluetooth headset (Nokia BH-905i) connects to my nexus 4 just fine, and I've been using it to listen to music since I get my nexus in january. But recently, every time I connect my headset, and I go to play any music or other sounds that play through the media channel, it comes out the speaker on the phone. In addition, when I use the volume slider I get the "speaker" icon instead of the "bluetooth" icon that I used to get.
My bluetooth headset has worked fine since the OTA update, it's just very recently (last week or two) that this issue has been happening.
The first time it happened, a simple reboot would fix it, now I can reboot and re-pair the headset all I want, it just won't work.
Has anyone else had this issue?
PS. I will also add that the next/previous track buttons still work, but the play/pause button DOES NOT! Very strange!!!
Am I seriously the only one with this problem?

What music player app are you using? That could be the problem right there. I sometimes have this problem with my JVC Arsenal head unit, but usually disabling and re-enabling bluetooth does the trick. Don't have to unpair or reboot, just toggle BT on and off.
Anyone know how to get the track info to transmit? It used to work with Apollo and Pandora, but it won't work with Spotify or anything else. In fact, it doesn't work at all on the N4
I use DSub, but I've tried google music, and also any other "media" sounds don't go through the headset as well ie: Youtube, games, etc.

have you checked the device profiles in the bluetooth menu? there is an option for phone audio, and an option for media audio, check them both
Yes I'm sure, I've also toggled them multiple times to try and get it working...
I also have this same problem. I'm using CM 10.1 nightlies
For some reason I able to pair my phone but not the audio.
In the Bluetooth settings though I only have the option for phone audio and not media audio. After checking on a couple of forums, it shows that my radio does support Bluetooth streaming through a2dp, but for some reason I cannot get it to work on my phone...
Edit:
It seems as though A2DP is broken in CM 10.1 as in stock android roms. I'm not 100% about this, but thats what it looks like.
Hi,
I do use AD2P audio a lot, and never had this issue (Sony MW1).
I m using exclusively AOSP or AOKP based roms (never use stock CM 10.1 because of how silly big is the navbar), but I can give it a shot during my next flashing session for testing
I don't have any problem pairing the audio. The checkbox goes and the headset actually beeps. It's connected, android just isn't sending the audio to the headset.
Me too

I've got the same issue.
I have tried with both jawbone and jabra headsets, no joy.
If I toggle bt on/off/on, connect the headset and then try playing music immediately I get ~1 second of audio over bluetooth before it goes silent.
I'm currently on PA 3.15 with moles kernel, but am going to try some other kernel/rom combos.
if anyone knows which logs i should be looking at i'm happy to upload them
Not quite the same problem, my music plays out of the phone speaker. Also I'm running stock rom.

If i wait more than 1 or 2 seconds after connecting my headset it comes out of the speaker also, as the bt media connection dies. I only get the little bit of audio if i hit play right after I connect the headset
I managed to find a very strange work around...
I installed this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/...sImNvbS5tYXhpc3Rhci5tb25vYmx1ZXRvb3RoZnJlZSJd
I turned on the app, and I could listen to music over mono mode (which sounds AWFUL). I then turned the app off, and when I changed the volume with the volume buttons I noticed the volume bar was displaying the bluetooth icon instead of the speaker icon.
My app was playing music, I didn't hear anything, but my headset was still outputting the characteristic 'hiss' of being in mono mode. So I went into the bluetooth settings and turned off mono mode, and now it is playing music through A2DP finally... We'll see if this problem occurs again and I'll see if the same process fixes it again. I'm just glad it's finally working again without resetting my phone.
I just wanted to update my post for anyone else who might have this problem in the future. I've performed this fix once before my last post and I haven't had to do it again, I've also uninstalled that app and everything is still working great.
It worked for me too!
Thanks to PickleHead and his workaround I'm listening again.
Thanks!!!
Media audio VS. Call Audio
Hi,
I have Samsung galaxy S3 with android 4.1.2 connected to my fordAudio BT device.
I am playing music using the original media player that came with the Android.
The BT connects quickly, but I can't hear the media I'm playing.
Recently I have discovered a "workaround":
When I disable the "call audio" (using the BT menu in settings) and leaves only the "media audio" checked, I am able to hear the media play.
If I re-enables the "call audio", the sound mutes immediately.
Does this helps to understand the issue?

I'm having exactly the problem described here, but this solution doesn't work for me. I have a Galaxy S4 and the bluetooth media audio sometimes works when I boot the phone up, but later it doesn't work. I tried this MonoBluetooth app and it doesn't seem to help. When I tell it to turn on the the mono signal, it says the media is disconnected even though the bluetooth module says it is connected to the AD2P device with media audio. On cases where it does connect, it seems to work, but in that case the bluetooth works with out this app fine.
I'm running 4.2.2 and see this on both the MDK and ME7 code base. I'm looking for a good soluton. I tried the Bluetooth Fix Repair on Google Play, but it can't seem to find my bluetooth configuration folders.

I have had exactly this problem for a couple of days with my S4 connected to my Jabra Freeway car speaker. Also in my case, disabling call audio makes the music pass through, but then I can't use the phone via the speaker which is sort of the whole purpose of the thing!
But I just found a simple workaround: I simply called my phone from another phone to check that phone audio passed through with both options enabled. It did. But it also cured the problem: After the call, media audio worked again - with both options checked.

I'd be interested to know if this fixes the problem for any length of time. Occasionally, and usually after a reboot, I can use the media audio, but then it fails when I try it again. Fiddling with the connections and apps sometimes makes it come back on, but usually only for a short while. While it is connected, it seems to stay connected.
S6 + Edge Att.
OK so here's the deal:
There are two bluetooth connections to the car; Calls & Media
If I have both connected, the bluetooth connection constantly drops.
If I disconnect Calls and leave Media connected, its flawless.
If I disconnect Media and leave calls connected, flawless.
But when both are connected it wont last 5 minutes without disconnecting.
This issue is close to making me want to drive the car into a tree - if anyone has a suggest I seriously appreciate it!
try resetting the car audio setup, and remove the pair between the phone and the Car Audio
sometimes even if you reset it the car audio might keep the paired devices saved
is this a OEM car audio set up, or a aftermarket one.
please lemme know

Thanks - its the BT connection to a 2015 Acura. I have reset it several times. Another clue is that if the phone is reset to stock it works well for about 2 weeks. I have very few apps any I restore them the day the phone is wiped so its not an app or setting...it's almost as if something get cached and then starts to falter....
See if the car audio bluetooth is still visible after you have paired it.
Trying doing this with another phone.
After resetting the car audio did you check if the car has the phone still as an authorized devices
If true that will be the culprit
What are the apps you use?
Streaming/offline apps
Almost forgot....
Don't let the car retrieve your contact details and phone book. Sometimes this makes the cars audio to go loco

check if the phonebook is shared with the car audio, if it asks to sync ...don't let it
issue with call logs and phonebook contacts can cause the audio system to restart or hang, i faced a similar issue.
Have this issue w/ the S7, note7 and now this s8+. The S5, S6 works, note5, etc. Exact same results with the phones that do not work.
In my other cars it works fine so I know its my Kia but I don't have any idea how I can rectify this. Called the tech at Kia and he said they've not tested the note 7 and may never as the car is a few years old so It looks like I'm on my own here. On my 2013 Kia optima w/ navi I do not get media audio so only BT that works is the phone. It will show the first song sometimes on pandora (Streaming audio, NOT pandora app radio) but never will update after that. All audio always comes from phone speaker. I can change songs from the stereo but that's it. Totally useless. Works fine in my other cars and my BT radio in my garage so it's a problem w/ my Kia but WTF?? My note 3, note 5 and S6 work just fine. Very disappointing. My wife is running android 6.x on her s6 and it works so it is not that.
I had a ticket into google on this for my note7 but they blamed samsung saying the ROM is fully customized by samsung. Samsung says it's googles issue.
Anyone else have this issue? Any suggested fixes?
Yes, I had this issue! When I got my S8 yesterday it would connect for phone and the third(?) option, but not for the media option. Your car might be the issue though, if none of those phones work. Mine did show three options: phone, media en another one.
Well: during the car ride I noticed there was an update for 'Samsung Connect' so I downloaded that. After that update still no joy. I then proceeded into work, obviously disconnecting the bluetooth connection. Once I got back in my car at the end of the day the connection magically worked. So it might be one of a few things:
1. Update Samsung Connect (if you can)
2. Disable bluetooth
3. Remove bluetooth paired device
4. Turn off car and restart phone
5. Try again
I`m about to head out for work again so I`ll see whether mine still works or not.

I have the same issue. I have a 2012 of the same car, Navigation with Infinity speakers. This is not the UVO head unit. I can connect for phone calls and contacts, but all media plays through the phone. I can see the first item from the music app, and can only skip to next song (I haven't tried previous song as I am only streaming). It does not pause though. All audio keeps coming through the phone no matter what.
I've enabled/disabled streaming on the car. I've reset the radio/head unit. I've reset the Bluetooth on the car. I've unpaired from the car side and phone side. I've tried various combinations of these things. None has fixed it. I've mentioned the problem in forums here:

Try the bluetooth app called bluetooth auto connect. I can not connect w/ my car on my s8 and s7.
Dave
I think it is samsung software. I paired it with a pioneer avic head unit for a trip 8 hours away to deliver the car to my friend. When first paired, it worked fine. Most of the time no issues. But for some reason after one of the rest stops (turned car off) I ran into that issue. When you go into BT settings in the phone, the media option was grayed out.
Only way to fix it was to forget the device, and repair it. It happened a few times on the way over.
Now that my friend has the car, he has no issues and streams with his Moto Z.
I have another issue with my car. The phone connects to Bluetooth but I can't navigate thought my music folder within the car system. Previously I had no issue with S7 edge and iPhone 7 plus. This is driving me crazy considering that Android auto just sucks with music playback. Most of the time audio apps I use (Spotify / Google play music) seems to do not work properly.

I need to toggle off and on the bluetooth 2-3 times for it to connect to media audio. Call audio goes on every time, it is a pain to connect this way every time. It worked perfectly until the first Nougat update.
That certainly isn't the case for kia/hyundais and a few other cars produced around 2011-2014. What make/model is your car?
Did you resolve this? I think I might have seen your post in the samsung forums. I have a 2013 Optima with Nav and having the exact same issue. I've done everything in the samsung forums to no effect. TIA.

Yes, bluetooth auto connect
I have the same issue with a Civic. With S2, it paired fine, but contacts only synced like 200 of them. Music info displayed.
With S8, imports all contacts fine, syncs music fine, but no music metadata. I would like to see artist name, track and album on screen.
All apps I have tried do not work
My issue with the S8+ is that I cannot get my AppRadio 3 microphone to issue voice commands despite having all the correct settings for Google as near as I can figure. The head unit works fine on my LG G3. I cannot for the life of me figure out what the problem is. It's destroying the phone's usability.
Old thread but I was having the same issue and found a fix that's been working pretty reliably for me so I wanted to reply in case I can help anyone here.
I was having the problem with my g6 and Hyundai. Phone connects to call audio fine but media audio won't play through the car, I can see the song that's playing and even use steering wheel controls to change it but sound comes out of phone.
What I did. Disconnect from the car, connect to another Bluetooth speaker and play music through it. Connect to the cars Bluetooth and you should get a notification asking what device you want to play audio on, pick the car. Should work for about two weeks and then you'll have to repeat the process.
Hope this works for you guys as well.

I think Google has some things to fix with BT. Hopefully it is fixed in Oreo and above.
Been experiencing a strange issue with bluetooth in my car (BMW). Phone is paired successfully but when I call someone the audio does not transfer to the car speaker automatically. You have to press the bluetooth button on the call screen and select the car system manually and then audio is heard over the car speakers. Never had this issue with my old OP2.
I've been through all the settings, both phone and car but cannot find anything that could be causing this.
Phone is a rooted 6T McLaren on 9.0.10.
Still facing this issue. I tried both the original (from playstore) and the modded google dialer as well as the stock dialer of course. Phone pairs fine, contacts sync and I can dial using the steering controls.
However, volume is by default routed to the earpiece not car speakers. On the dialer screen it shows that audio is connected to the car. If I change manually from say car back to phone speaker and then back to car it will then work.
I'm using a rooted 6T McLaren. Previous phone was OP2 running AOSiP with basically the same magisk modules and connected perfectly to the same car. Looked through all possible settings in the phone but cannot find the culprit. Not much to mess about incar settings; everything is as it should be.
Any help would be appreciated.
Interesting problem. Everyone would be stuck with it.

out of curiosity, are you rooted and if yes are you using any magisk modules? i have a feeling it could be related to one of the audio modules although my OP2 had exactly the same modules and did not produce the same issue.

No, pure stock on both devices, the bootloader is locked, no root.
I think the problem started after upgrade to Oreo. Now when I am calling from the phone, the call is always routed to the phone first and I need to manually switch to BT. If I call from the Car device - it is routed to BT immediately.

ok so it's definitely not the rooting or magisk modules. i did have some problems with my OP2 before, mainly not connecting to the car after pairing. Issue seemed better after changing from RR to AOSiP roms.
but this problem on the 6T is stranger still. would be interesting to see if other people have it. for info car is BMW F20.

but this problem on the 6T is stranger still. would be interesting to see if other people have it. for info car is BMW F20.

I've not rooted or unlocked my T-Mobile OP6T yet... Still stock OOS. Mine works as it should in my truck using a Kenwood DNN991HD both calling out and incoming calls. Just FYI if you are rooted on the stock OS.

pretty sure that at one point that setting was on. i switched if off a couple of days ago to see if it would make a difference (which it didn't). now I have unpaired and re-paired my phone to my car's bluetooth and put that setting on again. will report back.

re-tried with this setting on after re-pairing the phone. problem persists. if you manually change from dialer screen from phone speaker back to bluetooth then audio is heard through the car speakers. otherwise, by default, audio comes out of the earpiece.

What year BMW?
Different year BMWs have different BT implementation.
I don't have that issue with my BMW. I've got a 2014, it's never had perfect Bluetooth performance but calls always come through on speakerphone. Often phone audio will be connected and I'll have to manually get media audio connected.

my BMW is a 2012 F series model. when you say speakerphone do you mean calls get routed to the phones speaker by default instead of the car speakers? in my case calls are routed to the earpiece even though phone is connected to the car and I can browse my recents through the steering wheel controls. to listen to the audio through the car speakers I have to manually select phone speaker then back to bluetooth on the dialer screen.

Sorry I wasn't clear. My calls always come through on the car stereo but music does not usually. When I look at the connection on my car screen I see the phone signal icon but not the Bluetooth logo. Once I hit the media button the Bluetooth logo pops up (alongside the signal logo) and music streams through the car stereo as well as phone calls.
I'm guessing it's a BMW thing. Car tech is pretty mediocre at best.

Couldn't hurt to bring it up in the community feedback forum that OnePlus has...?

Well yes it could be a car issue although my old OP2 worked perfectly in the same car. As you suggested I asked the same question in the Oneplus forums.
I have the issue also with an Audi A3. Anyone has found a fix?

since that post I got a newer car (2018) and the issue disappeared even though if I remember correctly it had sorted itself out even on the older car.
This sounds a little like what my girlfriend just reported to me on her 6T. I gave her the phone last week with a factory reset, so no root or anything.
She says it paired fine to her car, but wouldn't automatically connect like her old Android (Moto) did.
I'm 5 minutes into looking into it for her, and this is the first similar thread I've seen.
