One of the main reason's I bought my TF was to watch movies on airplanes. I put a handful of movies on my SD card, popped it in, and some of them don't play at all and some only play sound but no video.
Is there some kind of file type I need to use to watch movies? Is there a suggested movie player? I'm using Act 1.
I used Vplayer unlock version to play mp4 movies for my recent trip to Korea w/o any problem.Maybe you can try the Vplayer free version from the Market.
I use handbrake as per the thread below to encode and the movies play great.

I use the default video player.
Vplayer seems to be playing all my movies. Thanks for the suggestion!
I've got rockplayer on mine it's running anything and everything I throw at it as well.
MoboPlayer is another alternative
VPlayer, Mobo Player, Rock Player are all essentially the same thing.
They use a software foundation called ffmpeg to decode more video formats than the built in video player can handle. While they will all play most anything, they use your CPU to do the work rather than the much more efficient GPU.
Basically, if it plays in the stock video player, use that, otherwise use whichever V/Mobo/Rock player you want.

I downloaded some Family Guy Episodes that are like 25MB each are .mkv files. I put them on my SD Card, and they play for a few seconds, and than a message pops up saying this video cannot be played. However, the video actually starts and I can see and hear everything. So is there a way for this message to not pop up? Thanks.

The built in video player usually handles .mkv containers just fine. Having said that, .mkv is merely an advanced CONTAINER format that allows for the easy assembly of video, multiple audio streams, subtitle streams, chapters, so on and so forth.
The contents of those streams can be almost anything. And this is where your problem lies.
In the windows universe with advanced players like KMPlayer, GomPlayer, VLC, MPC, and advanced codec packs like Combined Community Codec Pack, it is easy to create a situation where your Windows PC will play pretty much everything you throw at it.
For us, though the native video player is probably the best one ever released on the Android platform, it is not perfect. I would imagine that those MKV containered episodes are using a codec for video or audio that the player is stumbling over, or one of those streams is using a bitrate or encoding method that the player hasn't accounted for.
So far in my experiences the built in player DEFINITELY does not like mkv's where the video format is AVC1 encoded using Nero Digital's version of the AVC1 encoder. Also, I've encountered audio issues with AAC audio. This isn't a problem with the AAC audio though, rather it's bad MKV stream header information where whatever tool was used to mux the MKV failed to put in proper bitrate info.
Bottom line, and I'm speaking from the experience of having over 3 terabytes of media on my media NAS server here at home, MKV containers do not necessarily have any "standards" to them, in the sense that being an MKV doesn't really tell you what the video and audio are within. This is just due to the nature of the MKV container format, but it is a problem slowly disappearing as more people use more standard encoding bitrates and codecs within these containers.
As a suggestion, visit the market and download ROCKPLAYER ARM7 version. When I've encountered video files the native player won't play, Rockplayer usually does (with the notable exception of anything using Nero Digital AVC1). Rockplayer is derived from the FFMPEG codebase, so it's a tad more forgiving in what it will play.
It's either another player, downloading a different set of those episodes, or re encoding those episodes...
Thanks RockPlayer Arm7 worked .
The rock player has been able to play videos (tv episodes) that I was not able to play with the default player. I don't know much about codecs, but it's worth a try.
My phone played some 1.4gb TV show episodes that are x264 video and dd5.1 audio 1280x720 (High definition) inside an MKV file just fine.
Maybe your phone was just having a fit because you were trying to watch episodes of family guy?
Lol, might've been. RockPlayer works though, so it's all good .
Anyone know if the full paid version of Rockplayer allows multiple audio and sub streams?
I need that BADLY.
I buy Downloadable videos from Amazon pretty often and they are in wmv format. I already know It doesn't work with the video player, so I tried others like Rock player. But when I tried playing it, it shows me a mess of colors and no sound. Also I tried to Play another wmv file and got the video to play but got no sound. Does anyone know of a better video player replacement other than rock player that will play files like these with success? Or maybe even a way to get Amazon videos to play On android?
Can anybody confirm if Divx files stream?
If you use qqplayer, vplayer or a number of other market players u can download, you can play divx, mkv, xvid..what ever ur heart wants.
Do they work good. I tried rock pplayer but it doesn't seem to be hardware acceletated
VPlayer loads and I've tried a xvid .avi, and a mkv and neither play. It acts like it's going to but then takes you back to the file list.
Rock player played my MKV but no audio, wouldnt play the avi.
Would love to know if the Xoom can play at least a 720P mkv file. With the hardware it has, it SHOULD be able to play a 1080P mkv file if it had hardware acceleration, which it doesn't.
If the Galaxy tab 10.1 is anything like Samsung's smartphones it will have hardware acceleration on avi and mkv files.
Rockplayer worked fine for me, watch a divx and a mp4.

Just tried vplayer and qqplayer on Xoom. Although they install, they do not work. vplayer will not even play the video and qqplayer attempts to play but the video is jerky and the progress bar is across the middle of the screen.
why not try moboplayer?
it's also a great player, it can play plays a wide array of formats, i enjoy my HD mkv and mp4 files on my XOOM, i just can say it's great indeed!
Buy dice player.
The only player that plays your files with HARDWARE decoding which can save you precious battery life.
Going to finally get around to putting some videos on my tab. I just wondered what format was best? Do you guys use the stock video player? Probably will mostly be anime stuff and am planning on just converting with Sony Vegas.
Any help would be great!
the best format for the tab seems to be mp4, but I play 720p mkv files fine too, including over wireless. The stock video player won't cut it so you should get a better player. There's plenty on the android market, mx player and mobo player are free, dice player is not. I use mx and it works fine.
I haven't yet found a format that BSPlayer won't play fantastically Plus it's free, so there's no reason not to IMHO...just remember it'll ask you to install a plugin first time round - install whichever one it asks you too, that'll improve performance as it will use hardware decoding
Change your video format to mp4 with a xivd or dvix code, you will find it so cool in this tab. This format support 1080p video.
This tab is weak with h.264 code.
Thanks to all you guys got it working great with Bsplayer!
I was having quite a few problems playing HD mkv files, tried multiple players. The only player I found that played them well was BS player. Thought I would spread the word, I was rather annoyed that i was going to have to transcode a bunch of movies to play on this tablet but then i tried BS player and was incredibly surprised. Not sure if the pro version is worth the money, im hoping VLC will eventually be able to handle it.
EDIT: With software decoding MX player was able to play them as well. I tried DICE player as well and it also seems to work. For awhile I was having issues with those other 2 players but they seem to work fine now. It still depends a lot on other encoding settings but all these players seem to work fine with 720p mkv.
Vplayer is good also...
all these players can't play videos properly ......I would recommend u to convert video into mp4 or avi using formatfactory for PC .....once converted copy to ur tab and play using mx player or v player or stock ...........the resolution and bitrate adjustments make videos look lot smoother and plays without any hookups ......
HIT THANKS IF I HAVE HELPED
I have no problem with stock player and 720p mkv files as long as you don't use High Profile H.264 encoding. The file size will be a little bigger (than High Profile encodings) but that's about it.
