I recommend you start off with Cyanogen. Once you're comfortable enough to experiment, throw on JACHero. The HTC TouchFlo UI is truly great and worth the lack of bluetooth.
The Hero Theme doesn't give you any of the benfits of the actual Hero UI. I previously ran The Dude's w/ the Hero theme and found it was lagged too much and ate too much battery for just being a bit prettier. JACHero on the other hand is a different phone that is superior to the G1 is nearly every way.

thanks for the reply, If i ran JACHero is there any lag? Also would i be able to keep the Stock radio, I noticed this phone has signal in my house, My Iphone and blackberry do not.
also should i even bother with apps2sd because I have a class 4 sd card.
Also anyone know what a PVT board is and how to figure out i have one?
Most of your questions have been answered. Please search. If its ROM related search the Development forum (there is nice sticky at the top of the thread list), if its theme related then it will be in the Theme section.

Yes. To find out if you have a PVT board, hold the camera while you press the power button to turn it on. It will say it at the top
@everyone
If your going to post here, Please contribute to the origional posters question with something helpful, and respect your fellow XDA members.
This question has been in my mind for a while. Is it worth it to flash a Hero rom ? I am currently running cyanogen 4.0.1, wireless tethering is working, Overclock is working as well as Term. It is also wicked fast.
My SPL is .00006 so from my understanding a "Perfect" SPL, although I have root. Maybe am reading the post dates wrong but I thought this would not work. The method I used was 1 click root.
I understand there are some issues with Hero on a MT3G but if i have root and a partitioned (FAT32/EXT3/SWAP) Class 6 SD, would you use a Hero? My personal feeling is wait tell the Official release comes out for the 32A so there maybe a bit more to work with.
I would appreciate any insight to this. Thank you for all your hard work this community is awesome.
My opinion is Hero roms are still too slow for the MyTouch. I have one of Cyanogen's roms and love it. Many thanks to Cyanogen and those that assisted. I have flashed about four or five Hero roms and they are realy nice to look at, and I can apreciate all the work it took for someone to get them to even run on the device, but still too slow for me. Just my two cents.
My thoughts
Ya that was my gut feeling, I am going to stick with this as "if ain't broke don't fix it" I may however flash my G1, just to see how it looks
I agree with donepate, most hero roms are pretty sluggish and a lot of roms have trouble with the MT3G. Upon wake up the graphics turn to poo and get pixelated and blurry. But this is only on some MT3g's, and on most roms. The only hero rom that has worked for me is Fatal1ty's hero rom, but It was too slow for me, I was spoiled by Cyanogen's roms speed. If I were you, I would stick with CyanogenMod 4.0.1 and just download a Hero theme. I highly recommend Ted's hero theme. Looks just like the Hero but without its functionality and there's no Sense UI.
Try one
I would suggest trying it and deciding for yourself.
Some people have the absolute opposite experience then what is being mentioned in this thread.
I for instance, am running the TF3D V3 ROM by Drizzy (Not even the newest ROM out there by any means) with a 32MB Swap (as auto partitioned with the RAv1.2.1 Recovery) all on a Class 4 SD. And find the speed no slower by any means.
The only change I have made is to reverse Apps2SD (IMO Apps2SD is not necessary on MT3G)
I am completely satisfied, have no graphical glitches, I do get the TouchUI Loading once when I boot, and maybe once every 2 days if I don't reboot.
The improvements that the Hero ROMS bring to the user experience of the device out ways the quite small
So I say, make a nandroid backup and "Try it out" it just might be "worth it"
I just installed Hero
I used Qteknology HTC HERO PORT from [1.79.482.3] 32b and you are right, the usability is worth the sometimes lag. I have used the overclock app and disabled the old school clock widget and performance is decent. I may try some others but so far so good
Edit: Why this is not released on T-Mobile is beyond me, if they want a truly customizable UI, Hero is that. I upgraded from my G1 which is still working great to a MT3G and to be honest it felt like a windows service pack. I had to bite my pride and tell my wife I love so she could have my G1 and I could not get shot.
My other feeling is that when Hero is released for the non-Google branded phones, these awesome dev's will have much more to work with and speed just may increase. I do not know as all i can dev is a few nasty ass skins
Beautiful!
I just loaded the ROM you suggested and it is night and day. Everting works and more importantly, its fast Thank you for the heads up. I think we have a keeper.
I'm running Hero on my G1 and I love it but I'm waiting till Oct when HTC releases some legit new hero for Magics before I toss it on my MyTouch.
Yeah I tried Haykuro/Dizzy Hero and it gave me BSOD (Blur Screen of Death) but evil hero 1.9 has been running smooth for me with 96mb swap.
I used to hate putting hero roms in my G1 cause of the lag but since then there has been a mass improvement in speed... granted its no Cyanogen but definitely worth taking a look at as it can be used in a daily basis now

No and yes , I am disappointed with the Hero Roms, but impressed with the developement of them. They are not up to par yet, but soon. The one touch root is very impressive, no more of the old skool style.
I am looking for the orginal mytouch ROM and SPL to put back on, can anyone direct where i can find them?

I was pretty at the state that you were a couple of hours ago but I have say that this Evil Hero is actually decent even with my class 2 memory card. I am happy at the moment, I like it
I'm tired of my phone being too slow, responding too slow to touch, lagging..
I have the android 2.1 OS on my HTC Hero CDMA and I was wondering if there were any general recommendations to speed up my phone.
I would be willing to put on a hacked OS, root it, or do whatever it takes as long as the phone is still fully functional. I'm pretty new with this stuff so bear with me.
Thanks,

I rooted, installed CM6, my phone was totally transformed.
Cm 6 - rc1 is a good start simply amazing going from stock. I get 0 lag. I must warn you always do a nandroid back up before changing ROMs. Its basically a clone of your phone's software and settings allowing you to recover from a bad issue.

+1 to all previous posts.
The Hero running out of the box stock with Sense is really pretty slow. I liked Sense, but I like a faster device better.
Follow the well documented instructions found on this site for rooting the Hero and then play around with different ROMs until you find one that fits you.
Personally I've been running Darchdroid and don't plan on ever switching again.
I don't even know what lag is any more.
Thank you for your responses.
Is there a link for a tutorial or forum topic about where to download CM6 and how to install it?
Thanks.

The problem with installing something like CM is that those ROMs are missing a lot of the stuff that you are used to using. And you might spend a long time downloading, and looking for the apps you need. I found CM to be not much faster and a pain in the ass in some ways (the dialer is weak, same with the keyboard, etc.)
I know people are going to start pointing to all the apps you can download to replace what is there, but it's a pain, and time consuming.
If anything I would try one of Fresh's ROMs, which have Sense and most of the HTC apps. And his Toast versions allow for overclocking as well.
On another note, your Hero should not be slow. Have you tried a factory reset?? I have used slow Heros before, but when they are working properly there should be almost no lag with the stock 2.1 OS.
The kernel is under the thread cdma android development and as far as cm6 u can overclock as well with a different kernel and as for aosp vs sense its just user preference tryem both c which one u like best and stick with what works for u that's what there here for both are outstanding

That's the beautiful thing about CM6 though is the customization. I know its personal choice, but I actually love the CM6 Phone Dialer (one of the guys over on the theme board customized the background for in call to be a nice cyan color other than green) and like the AOSP keyboard moreso than the Sense Keyboard. You can however, install a variety of HTC_IME keyboards and get that same Sense functionality on CM6.
I only do a new nightly every few days and it might take me... 10 minutes or so to get my phone setup. That includes a Full Wipe, ROM Flash, Kernel Flash, Circle Battery Flash and now a Phone Dialer Flash. I connect to my wifi and the Market downloads all of my apps for me and I restore my settings with ADW Backups. Logging into an app every now and then doesn't bother me after I've flashed a new ROM.
This is an "to each his own" situation and I did use FreshROM for quite some time before making the switch. To me, I don't plan on looking back. I may be switching to the T-Mobile G2 when it's released and as soon as CM is made available for it I'll be rooted and running it in no time.

How do you get the market to automatically download your apps? Is it another app or backup? It won't even save all of the apps I had downloaded last time. It only seems to save around 8.
I have been looking into 2.3 Rom and there are few out there as of today that include gingerbread. I am not sure which is best, what would be recommended by users experience.
I did take a look at the Wiki Page about roms and browsed through the pages.
I would like to get some feedback from you guys that already updated their roms to what would you recommend and pros and cons that you found.
Thank you
Cyanogenmod 7 is the undisputable best. No other ROM will work as flawlessy. A manufacturer could not have written a better ROM. It's perfect in every aspect. If it's your first time messing with ROMs then I would suggest this one because otherwise you will have issues with other ROMs. Besides every function works for CM7. GPS, camera, 4g, etc...

Depends on your preference. Sense or aosp? A lot of them still have some bugs but if you search the forums you can find fixes. Just make sure to make a backup before you flash! What may work great for you might not for someone else due to different hardware and what not. Trial and error is the only way!

Its not drastic. If at all. Only because it is, essentially, CM7 minus some 'system bloat.' Don't believe the night and day hype.

I've exclusively used CM7 for quite some time now...just switched over to evodeck and it's been a flawless experience. CM7 has given me random issues here and there. If someone asked me which one I would recommend between the two? evodeck for sure as of now. You also get 2.3.4 with evodeck instead of 2.3.3 with CM7.

My aosp daily is Kings out of this world and my daily sense is Evolvedrom shifted. I second JRE77 though. My phone doesn't like certain roms that work great on another phone. Just use RA recovery, have a good working backup, wipe everything and flash away. You'll find one. Half the fun of being rooted is trying a bunch a different roms. Lord knows I have and still do even though I have my daily drivers
If your new to roms I would try CM7 first. I personally prefer myn's stuff because I like sense better.

I guess you´ll have to find out yourself.
If you don´t like the "native" Windows Mobile with Sense on your HD2, the only option which includes Google Maps is definitely Android.
There are so many choices on this side... why don´t you start using some SD builds of Android, which you can use for trials with Android, as a second OS next to Windows Mobile? This way, you could have the "best of both worlds".
In a next step, you could move completely to Android with a NAND build.
Why dont you first try a SD version of Android first.
Assuming you have Windows Mobile currently and a SD card
1) Download this zip file --> http://www.megaupload.com/?d=1W38WURX
2)Extract the folder Android to your memory card.
3)On your phone go to the folder Android which has all the files extracted
4)Run CLRAD.exe and then HARET.exe and your phone will go into the Android OS
thanks to both posters above this is exactly what I wanted to hear, I know all about this question being one that the regulars hate but Iv tried doing searches but when you dont know what your searching for its kinda hard, I think Im reading up on the right stuff now cheers

To be honest, you don't even need to change to NAND. I haven't bothered (yes, I'm a noob too), but I'm extremely happy with AmeriCanAndroid on SD. Decent battery life (apparently NAND is better, but I personally think it is good enough on SD), extremely smooth and stable Android 2.3.4 OS, and I can always go back to WinMo at any time (although why would you possibly want to do that )
+1 to all above. SD ROMs are good for testing and some for a daily driver. If you decide you want only Android like many of us... go to NAND later. The speed, performance, everything is amazing on a device 1.5 years old. I run EVERYTHING on my NAND ROMs with no lag (CM or MiUi).
Sense never ran well for me. No biggie since I'll be getting a Sense 3.0 overdose soon.
yeah Im going to just run it from the SD and see how i get on, just looking to see which ROM I prefer, looking at jaguar miui, it gets good remarks in the thread from users,,, a quick question If I use the SD card to run the ROM will i still be able to use the MP3s from the same SD card? probably a stupid question

MiUi is personally my favorite ROM. Even if you took away all the eyecandy stuff MiUi is great at, I still think I would run it over CM. And I love CM.

I never tried it for a long time because of comments like that. I tested it out because I always thought it looked girly and would be great on my woman's phone. Was a long time CM user but after two hours with MiUi I missed nothing from CM and actually found myself loving features that I didn't seem to get with CM.
I don't care if MiUi imitates a steaming pile of poop... the fact is it has so much functionality, so much eyecandy, and it NEVER lags for me. So fast and I run with everything turned on and power-use my HD2 like you wouldn't believe.
I still love CM and probably always will recommend it... but I get bored with it but not with MiUi.
My experience!?
If you ever flash your phone with android you would never go back to windows.
I have my HD2 since over one year and changed the OS two weeks ago. It is never more usefull with all this available apps.
A big thanks to all developers here, they make a great job cooking their roms and share with us.
cheers
