So I am running and Acer A500
Android Version : 3.0.1
Kernel 2.6.36.3-00001-g9b3ce2b
Build: Acer_A500_1.104.02_Com_Gen1
I am trying to root my device using gingerbreak v1.2, my device is in portrait and locked, sd card inserted and mounted. However when I open gingerbreak it does the normal thing however it just sits on the screen with the rooting this may take a few minutes message sitting there , I've heard of it taking up to 10 minutes but on mine I let it sit for 30 min one time and nothing. I have removed and uninstalled the gingerbreak.apk from the phone and reinstalled it and still no solution. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong or possibly a work around for this. I have searched the forums here and haven't found a solution yet.

Try a diff SD card would be my only idea - that and do a clean power off/power on before attempting root. Would bet on the SD card being the issue - others have reported trying a diff card solved their problem. Enabled USB debugging and locked into portrait mode *before* starting gingerbreak?
ok trying it with the card out of my fascinate now, hopefully it works. Oh and kind of off topic here, but anybody know if the keyboard dock from the acer w500 will work with the a500 or if anyone has tried it?
EDIT----------------------------------------------------------------
Just tried it with a new card, freshly formatted and everything, still nothing, gingerbreak sat on the rooting screen for about 20 minutes. USB debuging is on and its locked in portrait before starting ginger break. Odd thing, I tried to pull up the device info with ADB but the devices list comes back empty
Are the cards the same brand and/or type?
Did you format it on your pc or the acer? Maybe try the opposite of whichever you used. You could also grab the HP sd Formatting Tool and try to format with that.
Possibly try a reset then try again.
Just throwing those out there. It is what I would try if I had that going on.
Good luck.
I used my fascinate to format the card, ill try again using my computer then the acer to format it.
Just a thought but are you sure you have the right version of gingerbreak installed? I had the same issue you have and it turned out that I had somehow gotten the wrong version installed. Once I figured it out and got the right version, it rooted no problem.

Hi The same happen to me I unistalled and installed Iconia Root. Apk Search it here on XDA
Put a file on your sd card and verify it's reading it one of the file managers.
If it's formatted correctly, the file will appear, if not it will appear empty.
Had a similar issue when updating, some how when I copied the file from my PC to the card it screwed up the formatting. Should be formatted in FAT32.
Did you try without locking the screen?
I have rooted twice and never used the lock function to root and it rooted in three minutes.
w500 dock works with A500 only if you have a cable to connect the USB from the keyboard wich is the dock port....
and even tho... will not be a dock

Is there any sure-fire way to get root access that also unlocks Nand, etc...at least a way that is 99% effective.
After being told that UnRevoked3 doesn't really give full root or unlock Nand, I was referred to SimpleRoot as the way to get all of the above. I was primarily only wanting to get Wifi tethering unlocked, which I did, but apparently something still isn't right.
I tried SimpleRoot OTA 1.47.651.1 last night, and it seemed to go fine up until Step 4. It got thru rebooting the phone (Waiting for phone...), and the phone got back to the main screen, but the SimpleRoot screen on my laptop just sat there at "Starting Step2..." or "Starting part 2"...whatever. It never indicated it had finished doing whatever it was doing, and nothing more happened. After an infinite while I just had to close the screen. The phone seems perfectly fine, thought what the "Reboot and Scan" step actually was to do I don't know.
I can set some things to Superuser...but if I try install BusyBox from the Market, it fails saying that the phone is not fully rooted and "Nand unlocked". I thought SimpleRoot was intended to do all that, so I presume SimpleRoot failed overall and I don't yet have full root.
Anyone care to offer ideas or suggest other methods to get true full root that do actually work.
Thanks,
-JTT
I had this same problem as well. What I did was use a different micro-sd I had laying around and formatted it 3 times so nothing was on it and ran Simpleroot again. It worked on the first shot.
I'm sure you can use the card that you have installed and dont need to get a new one. Just copy all the contents of the card onto your computer then right click the drive under computer and choose format. Format it to FAT32 and when its done unplug the phone and reboot it. Run SimpleRoot again and it "should" work.
If not then I would suggest getting a new 2gb microsd and formatting that as well then run SimpleRoot again.
Hope this helps...
I think others have done the unrevoked 3 then used simple root and had success, also reformatting the sd card is a good idea, make sure there is nothing else on it when you do simpleroot, seems to work for some people this way, not sure if it is a problem with a 2g card filling up during the process ....
2GB should be plenty of space to just run the update as SimpleRoot uploads the part 2 PC36img.zip which is 180MB. The other files it uploads are tiny.
Also I believe SimpleRoot is one of the only ways to unlock nand as of right now...the other has more steps involved and SimpleRoot pretty much does these for you.
read pade 104 of simple root...read what jigga says, that worked for me. I kept getting past step 3 soon as i would click step 4 it just hung there. read pg 104 that helped my issue out.
agreed 2g should be plenty but not if there are a bunch of other things taking up space, you might get a bad transfer of some of the data. Just an idea.
Thanks for the help, but could you point me to where you found information about SimpleRoot that has a "page 104"? I've looked at the official site and elsewhere (and searched for any related info by 'jigga') but can't find anything.

Pls help...after installing Acer_A500_4.010.40_COM_GEN1 through CWM...then i do factory reset, right now my acer iconia is stuck at "android" screen...I can't go to Thor CWM since its not installed...
how to solve this problem ? thanks

Did you clear all date cache files before updstiong.did you confirm the md5 on the update.zip.these are a few diagnostic things.I would try taking your SD card inserting it into your computer using SD formater format the card to fat.redownload the update.zip file check the md5 to insure its not currupt.after moving it to SD card.the put back in tab and reflash.if this does not work try diffrent SD card. If that fails find a fifteenth download thee is prob a issue with that file
Now all of this is in the developer sections. You should have not tried flashing your device without knowing what to do if it went wrong.details about all I have mentioned are in the forum threads. OVER AND OVER AND OVER.
Please stop and read to understand your device
Good luck
Problem solved by flashing stock rom...thanks
Same problem
I also tried to return my Iconia A500 to stock and now my Iconia sits at the Android screen and will flash the word Android every few minutes.
I tried flashing it with stock roms I got off this site. I used Acer_A500_0.000.00_4.010.10_COM_GEN1_1310535068612_9b84abb1. I did decrypt it like Thor posted to do.
After the flash the Cockwork Mod is no longer there. My problem is very much like the one posted here but no fix is listed. I hope some one can help me.
I have been poring over this site for a while trying to find the fix.

Dunno why that would happen, I see the file size was only 47mb don't sound right to me...
I had similar prob with update.zip, just couldnt get it to work - lost cwm in the process and ended up using timmydeans method http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1307539 to get cwm and rooted 3.2.1. This wipes all your data so be warned.
Method 2 here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1276227 supposedly keeps your data but installs an unstable 3.0.1 which you then use to root and install cwm. Its difficult to use due to the instability so make sure you have these apks on your external sd to make life easier:
acer recovery installer and iconia root, just do a search on the forums to find them.
To go back to full stock I used the EUU package from here yesterday http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 to get back to 3.0.1 which worked real well, dunno if it wipes all your data coz i'd done a full format and wipe beforehand. I got all my OTA updates after the flash so now waiting patiently for the ICS OTA to roll out you will need a pc and your cpuid.
Surrender
Thanks I tried all these very good suggestions but still cannot recover my tablet. Looks like it is time for me to call Acer and find out what they will charge me to fix it.

hmmm, its rather unusual that none of those methods worked for you, without the system throwing up some sort of error unless you trying to revert to stock after trying one of the ICS leak roms - this involves a downgrade using an EUU but using a totally different method.
Did you remember to remove the update.zip from your external sd after you flashed the stock rom?
Are you saying it boots but just not all the way into the OS? i.e boot loop
sorry to ask all this but it may be of help to others experiencing the same thing
Flashing back to stock normally does the trick - if theres no SOS or LNX checksum errors - which you have not reported...
I have been working on this for the past few days and for the life of me cannot figure out the problem. I'll start by just laying out a sequence of events.
Bought A500 about a month ago. OTA'd to HC 3.1 4.010.13_com_gen2
Decided not to wait for OTA 3.2 and rooted with iconiabreak.
Did not do a backup (like an idiot, i know)
Flashed Taboonay 2.0 with Thor's 2.1 kernal.
Saw awesome post to get rid of cell standby by deleting phone.apk and telephony.apk....do i did that.
Realize i am an idiot and then run a Nandroid backup.
Was happy for a few weeks when i see that Vache had updated taboonay to 2.1b and decided i wanted to do that.
Downloaded the files and started to flash with CWM. Factory, cache, dalvik wipe. Run Taboonay zip.
Get stuck in bootloop at Taboonay boot screen. $#!t......
Think "it's ok, ill just do an update.zip and go back to 3.1"
Try almost all the files on Vache's full package and update thread.
I put each one on an ext sd card and throw it into recovery boot. The Android guy with gears shows up and it looks like it is going to work.
The progress bar gets about 90-95% of the way when everything just stops. Gears animation, progress, everything.
It then reboots and gets stuck in a bootloop at the android screen. Load a different update.zip and same thing happens each time.
I try to just do a normal recovery boot, but CWM isnt there anymore and i get the ! android.
Normal reboot gives me a bootloop.
So i am stuck and asking if it is the phone and telephony apks that caused everything? if that were the case, how would i be able to load them back up since im totally locked out. I havent tried adb since im out of town for a few days. Thanks for any help that anyone can lend me. Ill try to answer any questions for any information that might be needed.
bumping for great justice~
I've tried decrypting update.zip files and vice versa.
still no luck..
try the fall back to 3.0.1
Check under development section for iconia a500. You'll see a thread for going from 3.2 to 3.0.1.
As i readd about this rom, it seems it's used in difficult cases (it removes the locks created by 3.2 stock), so it could be worth giving it a try.

Thanks for the reply.
I don't think that will be a viable option for me since i'm not able to get my UID. i've plugged my tablet into the computer and gotten the "hardware found" bubble. It prompts me to look for drivers (which i havent be able to find) and, i assume because it's in a bootloop, wont show up on the computer.
Does anyone know why the update.zip files would fail at 90%? I think that's really the thing that boggles my mind and is most frustrating.
Did you at all have your A500 connected to your computer prior to this happening? If so then you can get the UID from by way of the Windows registry. Then you should contact SC2K and get him your UID he should be able to help you get your A500 back from the dead.

Unfortunately, no I never plugged my A500 into my computer.
quick update:
I was able to use a different computer and found something interesting.
While trying to transfer or open a decrypted update.zip file, i get an error message saying, "Please insert the last disk of the Multi-Volume set and click OK to continue". Clicking OK just brings it back and i am forced to click cancel.
Anyone have any idea what that would mean??? It doesnt happen when I open or transfer the non-decrypted file. Only the decrypted file using Thor's Acer Update Decrypter application on HC 3.1 and 3.2 files.
While loading the decrypted update.zip on the A500, it almost instantly shows the ! android guy, while the non-decrypted files go 90-95% and then reboot into bootloop.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
first off if you can get into recovery to flash anything. You are not bricked.
Take your SD card put in a android phone format it.
Put the card in your computer.copy a full update.zip file from dev section.likes on a post by Thor.put card.back in tab and flash.
If it stall fails repeat with a different SD card.seems smaller ones do best.
Good luck.

Thanks for your reply, first off.
I'm sorry I didn't make it clear that I had done all of those things during the events of the first post EXCEPT try a different sd card.
So I went out today and bought a PNY 2GB sd card as opposed to the SanDisk 4GB i was using. I formatted it in my Atrix 4G and threw a full update.zip file in there. The first file I tried (from Vache's http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113878 thread) was Acer_A500_4.010.38_COM_GEN1 (HC 3.1). Since I was able to open the .zip without decrypting it I loaded it only the sd card. It did the same thing as before (loaded to about 90% then freeze, reboot) except this time I got a "Boot verification failed..." message in bright red letters up at the top left of the Acer screen. Since it didn't work, I loaded Acer_A500_7.006.03_COM_GEN2 (HC 3.2) onto the sd card. Again, since I was able to open the .zip file, I assumed that there was no need to decrypt it. Loaded the sd card and put the tablet into default recovery (not CWM recovery which I no longer have). The same problem keeps happening: it loads to 90%, freezes then reboots. This time, however, it went into a bootloop at the "android" screen.
I've tried decrypted versions of those files, but I always get an error message while trying to open them and when trying to flash them in default recovery, it almost instantly goes to the ! android guy since I'm assuming those files are already decrypted and decrypting them again is bad.
Hopefully if I try enough files, I'll find the one that works...
Until then, if anyone has any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong or should be doing differently, please let me know!
Thanks.
there is a thread that has instructions on going from the OTA 3.2 to downgrade. To 3.1.look for that tthread and windows software. On that thread it talks about that error your getting.
Since I have not had this issue .can't say for sure if it will help.
Good luck sorry I can not do more to hhelp

Thanks for your suggestion.
I was able to find my UID from an old CWM backup file and tried this method. I attempted it last night with no success. I was actually in the middle of making a reply saying how heartbroken I was and that I was basically giving up. I decided to try it one more time and made a slight adjustment from my method last night. In the UID file, I had my UID in there as 0x0blahblahblah and kept getting the incorrect UID error in the program. When I tried taking out the first 0x in the program, it gave me an incorrect format error. That is where I was messing up.
Instead of 0x0, all i needed was 0blahblahblah in the UID file.
Attempted the upgrade utility again, and viola! It worked like a champ.
So thanks again to all that helped out and offered suggestions and to all the Devs for their outstanding work. I've definitely learned a lot from this experience.
Hi guys
im at my last resort. i received the ics update OTA. Before that my tablet worked fine. now that the update was successful. i cannot get on to wifi, or Bluetooth. I tried using the factory reset under settings but that didn't work. I also tried the rest button but nothing happened. i have even tried connected the tablet to the computer to try and copy files over to re root it. My tablet is out of warranty so acer wont be much help. Since i have down the update i lost my astro file manager which is how accessed the sd card. is there a way to reroot?

Well, before you get yourself into a jam, make sure your USB debugging is turned on, then hit the dev forum, get your UID number. Might as well get your SBK number also, as you will probably need it.
Then, if a hard reset doesn't work, then you can try putting the update ICS roms. Decrypt, pull the update.zip (do not extract), copy to SD, boot holding Vol+ and PWR. If the first one doesn't work, try the other.
Of course if you have a 501..... Well, different things to look out for.
If the above doesn't work, well, remember your UID number? NVFlash baby. You'll be going custom.
Depending on root method, you really shouldn't be taking OTA. Just a friendly tip.

Hi guys, I apologize for the very specific question, but I really need help and will try to be as informative as possible.
A few days ago, my tablet froze, and unlike the other times it's frozen, didn't restart automatically. When I rebooted it, it hung on the "ACER" boot screen. After hard resetting, and factory resetting after nothing else worked, I did some research, and found that I may have a burnt out NAND drive. ****.
Whenever I try to run NVFlash to read or write, I get the 0x8 error, "Fatal read/write error", which seems to back up the idea that the internal storage is shot. (And yes, I have the right SBK and everything, --sync works fine.) --- (Also, I spent two days learning an easy way to retrieve the CPUID from APX mode if anyone needs help with that.)
Blackthund3rs A500 APX Flash tool hangs on the "Uploading" part of the process. I tried both Thor's recovery and TWRP's recovery with the same results.
According to this topic it is possible to run the system from a micro sd card, though it will be slower than internal storage unless you have a class 8 or class 10 micro sd card. So I was wondering if there's any way to install a system, including rom, recovery, and bootloader, to a sd card to run on the A500? And if so, if it's ever been done before.
I really need this to work because I don't have the money for another tablet, and I don't want to spend the money for a whole new motherboard. If you can help me out, I'll buy you a drink.
Thanks,
-Tibyon

It was running OTA ICS. It was rooted. Acer's ICS update was never stable,
I would really like some input here guys.
Maybe just a bad sector in memory card. I read somewhere (old guy can't remember where) some one had the same problem. They did a scan an repaired (locked out that sector) then the tablet worked because it did not use that area of memory. This is how hard drive disks fix memory errors.
Google search of repair memory card might get you tools.
Sorry can't be more help.
