Hi, perhaps i have missed something here but is it not possible to for instance have music playing while browsing ? or do i need to run some non OOB app to achieve this ?
Thanks for any pointers
Off course it's possible. Hell I'm on the other side of this. I'm afraid of runing any music because I usually struggle to turn it off then. Just don't press the back key on the app. Use the Home key instead and it should continue playing in the background.

It helps to think of the back button like the red button in Windows or OSX.
The red/x or close in Windows doubles it's function for some apps but in general it means close/quit. For many it can and does mean close/minimize where it sends the program to your notification area vs. eliminating it from memory.
It's a similar situation with Android. Most programs will close/quit when you press back. Every game I've played, some utilities, many apps - but a few will remain open and simply get out of your way (GTalk, Yahoo, Pandora, etc.).
Because of this, you should just make a habit of using the home button vs. the back button to multitask. It'll save you frustration from accidentally quitting the apps you wish to continue running in the background.
Some examples Music apps that do not close when you hit 'back' is Google Music and Doubletwist. I'm not sure if Google Music is out of beta yet.
Good Luck.
I think the only exception is if you're listening to music in a tab in the browser, I don't believe active content in background browser tabs continues.
Otherwise, yep, fire up Pandora or the music app, start your music, then hit Home and fire up your other apps. You should see a music activity notice in the Notifications bar.
browser active tabs
There is a add-on for dolphin prowser that will allow web site content to continue when its not the active tab

So I have had the HD2 for a few months now and I can't seem to find its true potential. Ive had no problems with it. I can get everything working smoothly. Done. But can anyone else give me some tips as to what I can do with the HD2? What do you do with your HD2?
I also really want to utilize true multitasking but I dont know what is "true multitasking".
Can someone give me a few examples besides streaming music via web while I do a word document?
What do "YOU" do that is true multitasking?
Listening to music in the bus with Skype and IMPlus running in the background, Opera to check timetables online, Google maps open to know where I am, launch camera to take a photo of something I just saw in the street, receiving a mail and reading it, opening the tasks app to add a reminder related to said mail, switch back to google maps to check where I'm now, switch to opera again to check something online that I just thought about, switch to the music player to skip a track, switch to IMPlus to answer a message I just received, opening adobe reader to check something in a document... going back and forth between all those.

so by doing all those without having to close a single thing out? And you do this using the task manager in the upper right corner?
What I don't get is how is this different from Apple's iphone. Though it doesnt have multitasking, isnt it the same as opening things up and hiting the center home button and going onto the next app, etc? I dont see the difference.
the difference is on the iphone when you hit the home button it closes whatever you were in.
so any IM app such as skype, aim, facebook all get closed so you cant get messages in the background. you cant have pandora or slacker radio playing in the background. you can do one thing at a time.
pretty simple really

The difference is multitasking can switch between apps without terminal them. In iphone once you click the home buttom, the running app closes then you are able to start other app. It can't regard as multitasking cause iphone can only run a app at a moment. But wm os can run a number of apps in background at the same time and switch between them instead of close one app and start the other one app. That is mean you can play a game in wm then you skype somebody, when you switch back to the game, it resumes. But in iphone, you start skype before you terminal the game.

I use taskfacade or aebplus' task manager function mapped to the windows button.
The iphone can do most of it, with a few exceptions, for example if you open google maps and do a search, have the results displayed, then close the program to do something else, once you run it again you'll arrive at the main screen and you'll have to do your search again. With skype, you open it and it connects, but then if you close it to do something else you won't be notified of new messages, you'll have to manually reopen skype once in a while to see if you've received something. On the HD2 skype stays open and will sound when you receive something.
Then, I haven't used an iphone enough regarding the web browser, if exiting and coming back keeps all your open tabs etc.
On mine I cycle/run with run.gps running actively in the foreground, Pocketscrobbler running actively in the background, along with Audiobooster, music player doing its thing, RSS reader doing its thing, Push sync doing its thing...
Good thing on multi task is surfing. U can open more than one tab and while the sides are loading u check your mails or something.
I like it and its a feature I would miss on the Iphone...
What's not to get on multitasking?
being an iphone user for a time, one of the largest complaints (even after jailbreaking) was the limited multitasking. Even with backgrounder running, the phone was slow as crap. The touch hd2 on the other hand...
I have 13 applications open and I still see no lag anywhere. nuff said
1) i noticed opera doesnt keep loading if you switch to another task. It stops.
2) music in the bg is normal and most phones can do that. unless they are streaming like pandora. but even so jailbreaking makes it possible to do this for iphones.
3) skype is required, or eventually inevitable. Using hd2 is almost like you're sucked into skype, since everyone is using it, right? LOL
4) jailbreaking an iphone allows it to multitask. why not do it besides the illegal thing and the risk? its like bricking an hd2.
the new iphone OS4 should have multitasking too.. but i heard it only allows the apps to save some services or something, but the app still closes... thats why pandora doesnt work with it i think xD
apple will always be performance > flexibility, thats why they will never have TRUE multitasking, and for me, TRUE multitasking is when the application i open are still running IN REALTIME ( and doesnt stop ) in the background.
I find it really important that I can run my navigation system while having my calendar reminding me for my appointments or being able to receive phone calls.
Can you be on a call and quickly check a document, calendar, email, or web browse on the HD2? Thanks

Yes. You can be on a call and continue watching a movie also.

which version of opera are you using?
mind loads perfectly well in the background.. as do all the non java browsers I use.
why is skype required, I've used it twice in all the years I've been using winmo, which is quite a while now!
woopee do you can do some basic crap on the iphmoan
***SOME*** not all, but some, try really using the hd2 as it can be used, as a true powerhouse, with full multitasking, not something that you can do a couple of basic things with.
maybe HTC and MS should sue apple for copying multitasking on a smartphone
who gives a damn about jailbreaking the iphmoan? this isn't an apple forum..

Thanks for the quick reply. Unfortunately I do not have the phone in hand but I have an HD2 user that has a hard time with entering their exchange password to get in to multi task while on a call. disabling the password probably wont work and is not a good idea. I assume there is an auto lock while on a call that he may be able to disable. any help or ideas? your help is much appreciated.

Everything should work exactly the same while on a call... just hit the home button or start button to get whereever you need to go. Now, depending on your network, you may not be able to access the internet while on a call. If you're on 3g, you usually can... but if your on edge/2g, then you may not be able to.
An example of multitasking (seeing as that is what the op asked for):
Today. after almost bricking it setting it up how i like it (it's only a week old) i did a hard reset. Since that point i have had, the wifi on and wifi remote access doing various things, activesync doing it's thing on direct push to my exchange server, msn messenger bugging the hell out of me, pocketmusic keeping me entertained, facebook for windows mobile pissing me off, various explorer windows, word 2010 (you gotta do some work sometime), the text messaging app keeping up with the boys (and girls) that i call friends and phm registry editor (so i can install the tweaks i like) all running at the same time, since about 9am. The phone has lagged a lil here and there but nothing that has worried me and yeah the wifi needed a rest a couple of times coz the chip was getting hot and the packet loss was getting a bit high but overall i think it's done well considering it was getting hammered. Battery hasn't needed charging yet either (and it's not an extended one).
I've got a couple of friends that have (and i like this so i'm gonna use it) iPhmoan 3GS' and they want the 4G. I'm constantly being pestered by them to switch (i'm on my 5th winmo device) and all i do is laugh at them. Just yesterday one of them was wetting himself over the 4G having 256MB of ram. The direct quote he got was "my phone has 1ghz processor and 576MB of ram and can multitask better than your girlfriend. Go suck it!! It's in the corner over there" and that is my general attitude to the iphone and apple's idea of innovation right now. It's Overpriced, useless, unintuitive, lazy, anti competitive and designed to generate nothing but profit for apple. Anyone that want's or has one is more stupid than they look and far richer too.
My wife has a sirrius account and listens to howard stern. She would also like to be able to go on the internet and look at facebook an other stuff at the same time. Everytime she is listening to the siruis radio and opens a new tab the radio stops. Any way to do both at the same time ?
Great question - I to have had the issue of listening to music and having it stop when I navigate elsewhere. It would be nice if there was a way to get the audio, no matter where it's coming from, to remain persistent throughout the OS.
TuneIn Radio does. It places an instance in the notification bar and when you leave the player it continues to play in the background so you can listen to it and still surf, read etc...
Are you listening through the app or via the website?

The website
If they would make all tabs 'active' like this and you would have a couple of website with flash or javascript or whatever running your tablet would become very very slow I believe.
So probably not possible (maybe with another browser?). Better use apps for background tasks.
Thoughts on Multi-tasking and "Exit" in Android. Developers please read and respond.
Having done extensive reading on the topic, I understand why developers don't see the need for an "Exit" option for most Android programs. For behind the scenes management, it isn't required. The problem is that our needs as end-users are different than that and should take precedence.
The classic example of needing an "Exit" option is the web browser. If you have been browsing a while, you may need to back through several pages to get the thing to close, which is a pain in the neck. Another example may be a music player. I might not want it to pick up where I left off when I start it next time.
End-users want to be able to choose from options like these when leaving an application.
1) Pause - exactly what it sounds like. This is pretty much what happens most of the time when leaving an application, but it should set a priority flag of some sort so it is one of the last things to get "ruthlessly killed" to recover memory.
2) Exit - stop everything and reset to a default state so that the next time it is started it is a fresh run.
3) Background run - this is true multitasking by user choice. The app continues doing whatever task I set it to while I go do something else. Much like what happens with music players or Navigation programs when the Back key is used.
4) Home or Back key - it would be handled in the current default manner, letting Android decide what is correct.
I've mentioned it elsewhere, but I believe a proper multi-screen launcher should allow you to start different apps on different screens and go back to the app started on a particular screen automatically when you return to that screen. So for example I could be doing e-mails on screen one and have my music player open on screen 2 and perhaps be reviewing a spreadsheet on screen 3 and go back and forth between them as my music mood changed or I looked something up in the spreadsheet or on the web on screen 4 then went back to my e-mail to include that new information without closing one and opening the other and so on going back and forth. Android could decide if the app is paused or actually running while I go to a different screen, but anything open on a screen should be the last thing to be killed before essential services.
Anyway, those are my thoughts on what an OS needs to be able to do before it can call itself multi-tasking, as well as the kind of control us users want on our phones. After all, they are OUR phones, right?
I have a few questions and they are probably answered here but I'm at work so its very hard tor me to get on my phone.
- is their a way to get android market on a KF even if its not rooted? I really would just like to install apps that are not in the amazon market. A new launcher, etc. Do you have to be rooted to install apps from android?
- What is side loading apps? I keep hearing people talk about this? What is it for?
- is there a way to text people from my KF? If so can anyone tell me a good app?
- how can I change the amazon keyboard to say swiftkey or something?
- any way to play movies on the KF? Could I drop a mkv, avi, divx, etc. movie from my pc onto my kindle? Or could I stream it to my kindle somehow?
- last question to now...is there a way to improve the touch screen response? I have to repeatedly touch icons, links and whatnot. I thought I saw an app that improves the KF screen?
Thanks everyone for the help, its greatly appreciated.

1) No. Market needs root to install. Some other launchers work without root, but you now have to side load them. You can add other non-Amazon apps in many cases, but without root, you can't use the Android Market, so you would need to side load them.
2) Copying the APK install files via download or via usb or other means.
3) The Kindle Fire is not a phone, there is no radio in the device so no text messaging. You can use things like Google Talk but you need root to install it. There are some web based txt stuff, but that is not really on the device.
4) Need root to do this
5) There are other video players that will do this. Like MX Video player
6) Not really.
6 In particular is starting to get on my nerves. I think its an OS/Kernel issue because tapping stuff elsewhere seems to be ok, but that bar is a headache. Hit back 5x and you see it light up each time.
Also I dont know if its dolphin browser or what but a lot of the times I tap a typing area like google search, after 2-3 letters it just hides the keyboard.
Also I've been having more issues where you click a typable area and start typing, but nothing shows. Keyboard is showing recommended words, but none will actually show on the screen.
Oh, also if you're watching a video on a site, good luck moving the time bar. Sometimes I have to press and hold my finger 2-3 seconds for it to trigger.
Seems to be a little worse since 6.2 imo.
Once the kindle is rooted and the entire market is installed does the kindle act like an android phone? Do you get the android home screen? With cm7 does your tablet act just like phone obviously without gos and so on.

The market is just an app that you use to get more apps.
It will still look and feel like an out of the box kindle fire.
And last I recall the market wont show up in the standard kindle launcher, so no one would even know it was there.
You have to take additional steps to even utilize it.
CM7 would make it act like an android device. there are tablets with CM7 so it has nothing to do with phones. Gos I assume is gps, and some tablets have that so it isnt phone only.
Hi,
Please refer to the article below. It will give you a deeper understanding of what rooting is and some tweaks you can do to the unit.

If you have google voice linked with your Sprint number, you can send and receive texts via Google Voice
I have the Market installed but for some reason there are tons of apps missing for the market. Is their way to fix this?
Apps like Yahoo Fantasy Football to Google Maps or Google Earth are not there.

I think you can send/receive a limited number of text messages as well as make /receive calls with a free Google Voice account. I have not tested this with the Kindle Fire, so someone else may correct me.
There is an app called TouchScreen Booster that may help you adjust your screen sensitivity.
the following is from an other thread i don't remember (thanks to them !)
additional settings in build.prop:
# Rendering User Interface With GPU
debug.sf.hw=1
# Increase overall touch responsiveness
video.accelerate.hw=1
windowsmgr_max_events_per_sec=150
debug.performance.tuning=1
MAKE BACKUP COPY !!! - CAUTION WITH MODIFYING BUILD.PROP !!!
if your not sure - leave it !
i made this settings and i'm satisfied ...
Go to Kindle Fire browser Google search for "applanet". Under the link will be on the left "familiar interface" I tried that one first and it didn't work. On the right of it is one called "Version". I clicked that one and it directly started downloading an app. Tap the upper left part of the screen where the notifications are and when it is done downloading tap on its notification. It will install. (prior to this you need to go to settings - device and turn on download from unknown sources) install it and it creates an app called Applanet Market. Go to the Amazon market and search for ADW ex. Download that. You may find apps on Applanet that are not in Amazons.Search for any application you want. Like youtube, earth, gmail, whatever. When you're done playing with applanet hit your home key. It will give you a choice of ADW or stock. Check off the default box and choose ADW. Go to menu at bottom and go to ADW settings. Advanced. Set columns to 6 and rows to 6 and return back. At the bottom middle you have the ADW 3 button controller. I opened the app drawer (middle button) and dragged the Kindle Fire launcher to home screen and then long pressed it and dragged it over the area left of the appdrawer button. It will stick here and with it you can get to the stock KF home screen. But whenever you tap home, you will go to ADW. If you ever want to change that, go to settings. Applications. ADW. And at the lower area you can choose to release the default.

In response to this and OP's earlier question, MX is good. Moboplayer is good too, but I've been having full screen problems with Mobo. On streaming, you can use Dropbox or Sugarsync (I use SS, there is a thread on it in the apps category). For streaming though, I've found that MX doesn't work great and Mobo is better, which is why I use that for streaming, although I still have the full screen issues. If you stream using SS, just make sure that file is encoded in a quality to get a good stream. There is also another thread on how to setup files to do this in apps category as well.

Is there a recent apps switcher on the nexus player? for example, if i'm watching netflix, and hit home to go look at something, netflix doesn't stay open in memory. i have to re-load the app from start, and find what i was just watching, hit play, and hit resume.
is there any way to just easily jump back to that app?
It seems to handle like normal android, in that if there's enough free RAM, you can swap back without losing a beat. But switch to another big memory hog and you'll lose the background app.
yeah i'm just hitting home, and then when i go back to netflix, it has to restart the entire app.
Unfortunately the stock rom doesn't seem to have the functionality built in. I just checked by changing the kl file for the gamepad to APP_SWITCH on both my nexus player and gs4 it worked on the s4 but nothing on the nexus player. There might be some kind of work around but I don't know any

Out of curiosity, I tried with netflix last night and couldn't get it to stick in memory even simply going home and then back in. However, I can leave Kodi and go to Plex and then come back to Kodi without issue, so long as I do it quick enough. Must be something with just netflix. Or more likely, it must have to be coded in specifically.

Off hand if I were to guess is that it's definitely a netflix problem as well as lack of support for runnning activities on googles part. Typically when you open an app from a launcher it opens the main activity then the app would start whatever the running process is. I don't have time at the moment but you could try making a list using activity manager and display the currently running apps and pick one to run.
