HOW do I send a file from my Phone to my PC ???????

I know this should be alot easier than i'm making it to be.
How the hell do I transfer a video I recorded last night, to my PC? (so i can upload it to facebook)
If I connect the USB cable, what do I select ? I selected "mass storage" but when i went to "my computer" nothing came up -- why not ?
What's the EASIEST way to send files ?
there should be an option to directly upload to Facebook -- like they have with youtube.

What is your operative system?
If it is mac os you need to put the phone's usb in debug mode. You can do this from adjustments, applications, development.

im using windows 7 64 bit
do I still need to put it into debug mode?

basically i want to know the steps/directions on how to a) attach my phone with the USB
and then b) to go through my phones files and select the stuff I want to download to my pc
why is it so hard for me? it's super frustrating
I honestly don't think it should be this difficult...

when you go to mass storage you must still mount
follow the steps below hope it helps
1. plug usb in
2. select mass storage
3. pull the menu down and click on usb connected then mount
4. open the removable disk (your phone)
5. go to the folder with the files you want to copy
6. either copy paste if u want the files still on the phone or move to a new location on your computer
( camera pictures are in my DCIM folder then camera other files u need are some one eles not sure)
7. after ever thing is done and your finished transferring data to your computer
open the menu again selected usb then turn off .
your done.
dropbox said before is a site you can use to upload files to your computer on the go
say someone at home wants to see the pictures you just took on your trip its as simple as putting the pics in the folder dropbox and then there viewable on your computer i love the idea personally hope this helps

I use bluetooth.

If they're just short videos and you don't want to go through the USB process, then just upload them via Dropbox if you have a good internet connection. Google it, get an account, get the Android app.

You're missing step 3 in Bobler420's post. That is, after selecting mass storage, pull the notification drawer down and click on "USB connected".

Exactly, you have to mount SD card on your phone via pull-down menu.
Another way (if you have home wifi network) is to do it with EStrongs File Explorer where you can directly copy/paste from/to your phone over wifi connection.

Why not upload it via the facebook app? If that's what you are wanting to do.

I do it via sugarsync (https://www.sugarsync.com/) - works nicely, even if the client could use some additional work....

you've gotta mount your usb from the notifications menu after plugging in your cable.
or use dropbox.
or email attachment.
or upload it straight to facebook.

I tend to use Dropbox since I'm such an utter slob I can never be bothered digging out the nano-USB cable...

Why not use the included mini-USB cable?
Another option would be some kind of file manager. I use ES File Explorer. I can navigate over LAN to my laptop / desktop and grab files.
Dropbox is another option. Though you'd first have to send the files to your DB folder on your PC - this does have the added benefit of being able to get to those files anywhere you have a WiFi connection though.

File expert is nice. Plus it can stream media from your PC.

PogoPlug also works very well (free in Market), AND the premium app allows to stream audio/video to any mobile device from your PC.

USB USB USB!

+1 for dropbox... works awesome!

One thing I noticed is that some of the folders that appear on Root Explorer do not appear on my computer like the beautiful widgets folder.

downloading files is much faster over wifi than USB, and there's no performance hit like there is with USB.
I can access my files from anywhere I have a data connection. it was nice the other day to think about an album i wanted to hear and download it over my work wifi

The only real issues I have with it so far are:
I can't set a default download folder on my A500. I'm hoping they fix this.
You have to kill the client to move files from the default download folder to say your external sd card.

Whats the best way of obtaining the files if you have external hard drive on a network? I've been told of several file folder managers, but have been unsuccessful in getting into my network.

You can accomplish this with tonido as long as your external USB drive is mapped to your pc.

I agree, a way to change the default folder/location to an external SD card would be nice.
Also, a way to set a global 'hard download' option for all or a folder would be nice vs. the individual file(s).
For some of us without a full time 3G/Wifi connection I prefer to have my files synced and resident on the device.

Nobody using Acer sync? The client is already pre-installed on the Iconia, you just have to install Acer sync on your PC. Sync by wifi or USB on demand. Pretty easy to use. I also use remote web desktop app with nice drag and drop feature, websharing by NextApp and wifi explorer which give you more control on which folder to transfer files.

i'm still trying to figure out how to move music files around. I connect my tablet to my computer via usb cable. I put some music into the acer music folder and then look for it with the google music app and nothing comes up. But everytime I look at the music folder on the a500 using my computer the albums and songs show up. I can find the music on my computer with the clear fi app but when i click on a song to listen to it clear fi says it dosent support the file. Every thing I have has been downloaded to windows media player.

Any way to turn off MTP mode for USB?

For A500, is there any way to turn off the MTP mode and just get A500 to act as an USB drive (i.e. USB mass storage)?
For copying large files, Acer Sync's speed is ok, but I copy offline newspapers for viewing on A500, and that involves thousands of small files. MTP's speed for copying large number of small files is much slower than USB drive. For example, I can copy a whole newspaper to a USB thumbdrive in 3 minutes, while using MTP mode it takes 15 minutes.

I'm new with the Acer, and I don't have an answer to your question, but I wondered about using a thumb drive. Needs to be formatted to fat 32. Just use the thumb drive like you would the micro sd card. 4 gig thumb drives are pretty cheap.

Woody, I think you misunderstood my question, my question is not about using a thumb drive on A500... I would like the A500 to behave like a usb thumb drive when plugged in the micro USB cable to a PC's USB port.
The other annoying thing I forgot to mention about Acer Sync is that it is single task when copying files. You can only copy one file at a time, you try to copy another file before the first one is finished and it'll tell you the file system is busy...

If you're running 3.2 when you plug your tab into your PC your tab should pop right up on your PCs screen giving you two drives to choose from. External or internal SD card.. Drag and drop. Never heard of anyone using Acer Sync to copy files before.?!?

Are you using A500? I know other tabs are like that, which is the normal usb drive mode. A500 isnt like that, it'll recognise as a A500 tab in win7, not a drive, and copying files is via this special protocol, not like a usb drive.

Ummmmm my signature clearly states I'm using an A500, and I've never used Acer Sync in my life. Drag and drop files just like a thumb drive. It comes up as an A500 in win 7. You double click on the A500, and it will show 2 drives (internal SDcard, and external SDcard). Double click on whichever drive you want to copy files to, and drag and drop them in, or use "copy and paste".

That is using the PTP kind of protocol already, not acting like a thumb drive. Just do a simple test, copy one large file to the SDcard, and then before it finishes try to copy another file to it, it'll say the file system is busy. USB thumbdrive won't behave like that. Copy large number of small files in this PTP kind of protocol is much much slower than thumbdrive.
Also, try plugin in your A500 to a WinXP PC, it won't even recognise it without installing drivers for it.

You are correct, only one at a time when copy files unless you highlight two at same time, if i connect the usb drive directly into win7 pc it will automatically add to the loading file, as for the recognzie pc acer do say that on their support page...
there is a auto sync option in settings under accounts and sync..

Of course WinXP needs drivers, that's a given. It's a 10 yr old OS!
Your first post stated that you were using Acer Sync to copy your files.
I was simply wondering what kind of person would use Acer Sync to copy files when you can simply drag and drop them into your tab.
I tried what you asked. Started by dragging and dropping a movie to the tab, then tried d/d a few docs, and it indeed said busy.
When I chose them all at once and dragged and dropped them in, it copied fine, and much faster than a few of my thumb drives (three times the speed).
Question for you now. Why can't you simply choose all the files you want, drag and drop them into your tab and wait for it to copy the files, and be done with it? And second question is why would you ever choose Acer Sync to copy your files over?!?

I did, in fact I chose a whole directory to copy to the A500. My problem is the speed, with thousands of small files, copying the files using this way is slow in comparison to thumbdrive, at least double the time.... in fact, I can copy the files to a thumbdrive and then plug that thumbdrive in the A500 to copy to it, and I can finish the copying action faster this way than plugging in the A500 directly to the PC.... so speed for copying large number of small files is my only main issue
The side issue is winxp, without the USB drive mode, I can't connect to my office PC as I dont have admin rights to install programs on that PC... and one last thing, I probably put the subject wrong, I didn't use the Acer Sync, I'm using that PTP kind of protocol as per default, I thought that was Acer Sync at first

PTP or MTP? PMPs and most media devices use MTP. They're generally designed this way so that you don't corrupt files or damage the files on the flash drive by disconnecting without first removing the drive in Windows. It shouldn't technically be that much slower than a thumb drive if you multi-select stuff. I generally sync my mp3 list when I'm going to travel in case I don't have wifi and xfer time seems similar if not quicker than copying them to a thumb drive.
I'll try to see if I can get some small files, maybe pictures and test those.

I know, theoretically it shouldn't be that slow. Practically, I don't know what's wrong with Acer's implementation of it, it is dead slow copying large number of small files. To give you an idea, the offline newspaper I copied is about 1,000 files, mostly html about 1k big. The jpg files are about 100-300k big. It took me about 15-20 minutes to copy those files to my A500 via the usb cable. If I take my SDcard out and copy the files direct to the SDcard using a card reader, that can be done in 3 minutes.

I did another test using mp3s and the xfer was fast. Copied 150 files, 890MB total in 3m 35s using a class 4 card. That's around right.
Ironically, the same files took 6m 20s to the internal drive.
The only conclusion I can make at this point is that for some reason the bigger the file, the faster the transfer to the external SD. The smaller the file, the faster the transfer to the internal drive. This is all speculation.
Can you try copying them to the internal drive and let me know what you come up with? I myself am going to now try a comparison of 1 big movie file.
Update: I finished the other test. Puzzling. 1 MP4 file @ 2.26GB copied in ~3m to the external SD card.
In the same amount of time, just 1/3 of the file copied to the internal storage (I stopped that transfer, it was going to take ~9-10m).
I could only start to guess what's up. Maybe the A500 is actively scanning files being transferred to the internal storage and it ignores files smaller than a certain size or there's some other overhead going on and "noticing" media files, vs. any other kind.
The SD card is for the most part on the other hand, free and clear. I get the same results from my phone and its external SD, and that's connected like a Thumb Drive, as you put it.
Note that both the internal storage AND SD card are still accessible when the A500 is plugged in through USB, unlike most phones where the SD card is first unmounted.
What class microSD are you using? I think your best result might be copying directly to the tablet OR buying a faster microSD card.

I did the test to internal storage, it is even slower than SDcard.
I did another test - copying 400 html files of 1-4k, a total of only 1.6MB. The A500 took 3 minutes to do that, while my thumbdrive finished in 18 seconds. The A500 can only do less than 3 files per second, no matter how small the files are, that makes copying large number of small files a pain in the a$$.
I used a class 10 SDcard, and the result is about the same, the problem is with the interface, not the SDcard speed. You won't notice the slowness unless you are copying files that are really small, if you copy MP3 files that is 5MB big, you won't reach the limit of 3 files per second anyway.

i assume people using win 7 DIDNT REALIZE that a500 use MTP, because a500 just shows up like a usb drive altough in reality they dont get any drive (they just dont care)
only people with mac and win xp will realize a500 use MTP ,

I know exactly what you're saying. it's pretty horrible that the a500 uses MTP for file transfer.
Some workarounds I found was to transfer files using FTP, which is much faster for several small files so even over the wireless it'll be faster.
Also some other techniques I found were to zip the many files on my computer, transfer the zip and unzip them on the acer.
Also the other obvious is to plug the microsd card to your computer with usb.

Yes, sadly I have to use other workarounds, there seems no way to use USB mass storage mode on USB. I now copy the files to a USB thumbdrive, and then insert that thumbdrive to A500 to move the files to A500. Even though that is twice the work, it is still much faster than using MTP transfer alone.

It's not the A500's fault it uses MTP. You can thank Google for that as they're the ones who built it in to Honeycomb and dropped USB Storage mode.
Hopefully it'll be back in ICS...

Alternatively, some file managers will allow you to send files via wifi to and from the tab. For me this is the prefered method (I use file expert, which is free). However, I noticed that occasionally large files like movies may fail, perhaps due to signal quality. I haven't had any problems with individual files up to 200-300 MB.

Hummmm not sure if this has been asked. Where are you putting the files at on your Iconia.If your putting them on the external SD card. Remember not all SD cards are treated equal.
Check the speed class of the card.and run a test to see how fast it can actually accept the files. Just because a card says class 10 does not mean its built well enough to handle that speed.
Internal storage can sometimes be slower then others as well.This would be considered a defective device.
I would surest to see if its faster or slower depending on where you store them.for me storing on my. Class 10. Ocl sd card..

File transfer options (USB and WiFi)

This is a list of all the options I tried (in chronological order) to solve my file transfer issues with the Galaxy Tab 10.1. The last option is the most stable one and until either Samsung or Android give us something usable I'll keep using it. Its a WiFi solution, so its slow in comparison to a USB solution.
Kies Software: Simply does not work for me since it requieres the USB drivers to be installed and for some reason they will not install correctly in my laptop.
Kies via Wi-Fi (Settings/Wireless and networks/Kies via Wi-Fi, it requires the Kies software): It says that the SIM card was not detected... There's obviously something really wrong with that Kies app because I have a WiFi only tablet...
Kies App: Basically creates a server in your tab that you can access through your browser. It works but if you need to transfer several GB's of music files organized in folders... you're going to have issues with it... Plus its really unstable.
SwiFTP FTP Server: Basically creates an FTP server in your tablet that give you access to the whole disk. It works with any FTP client in your computer. I use FileZilla. Its realy stable and you can simply drag and drop all your files to your FTP client. Also, it doesnt interfere with the use of the table. So you can use it while the files transfer. There's more options for FTP servers in the market but this one works, so why bother...

Try installing "samsung_usb_driverP4" .

I transfer filesnto and from my tab using the android sdk enviroment and the tab in debug mode. Once the sdk is installed it's just as easy as your phone though usb mass storage.

If you have rooted your Tab, there is a free app that is so simple a US Congressman could us it. Check out Samba Filesharing. It makes your Tab's SD drive show up as a wireless device on Windows computers. It is fast and easy as drag and drop.

I haven't used my USB cable for transfers since I got this program in August. Dev is awesome, will help those that need it, and he updates the program with new features about once a week. Best 99c on the Market.

Another option is Airdroid. Search for it in the Market.

I know theres a lot of options in the market, but I want to fix the usb issue. My music collection is about 5GB. It took the whole day to copy over WiFi... I'm contemplating re-installing Windows... which is a huge PITA...

use google music on your computer it will sync 20000 songs

This is the one i use and it works for me :had also problems with a regular usb stick ,wasn't recognized but after installing the samsungdrivers my pc recognizes my tab 10.1 and usb stick aswell.

had similar problems and removed KIES and installed Airdroid on my tablet and works great!

kies air is not an option when you have to transfer more than a couple of files.
I only found the option to transfer one at a t ime through the web interface.
so it is extremely time consuming to do 1 at a time...
The best option i found so far, was the como with the adaptor for usb sticks and flash cards.
I got it on ebay for about 25$ and i been using it all the time since then.
It is VERY fast (depending on your usb stick as well) but with a trancent stick, i get about 10~15 secs for 1GB of mp3s.
So far it is the best way i found to transfer files.
P.S. I believe it is a lot faster than using the cable usb connection with the included charge/data cable.

All the options u presented are great, but I was looking for a way to share files with my PC via Windows Explorer, i.e., transfer files from/to my tablet via samba file share. Does anyone knows any way to?

The overhead is just too much. Fist you need to upload all your songs and then you need to download them to your phone... Unless you have a reliable 3G or 4G connection, which I don't have...

I have a Dell PC, I need to transfer some Power Point files and some other files to the Nexus 10. How can I go about that? Please help

I've always used Dropbox for all of my file transfer needs, and it has worked fantastically :good:. Give it a shot!

You could use wufi file explorer. Install it on your n7 then access it through your dell's browser to upload & download.

Yes you can.

If your using Vista+ (and not a N or KN edition of Windows), you should just be able to plug the Nexus 10 to the computer and transfer files via MTP.
If that doesn't just "work":
- You have a N or KN edition of Windows and don't have the media pack installed
- MTP is either removed or disabled
- Old drivers from ADB are possibly interfering (uninstall them, replug device, should work)
No idea what to do on XP or any other OS though.

I would use es file explorer.

Got me worried for a moment. Now if you can use the Nexus 10 as storage, is it possible to make say a mobile the "PC" or whatever and exchange files tru USB or that is blocked by Google? I'm a bit clueless what is allowed and whatnot on Nexus devices.

Might be better to think of it the other way around, could possibly connect a phone/camera etc to a nexus 10 and use the nexus as the host to see the files on the phone/camera etc

Yeah but stock N10 doesn't allow that, no? Really strange. It's okay not to have SD slot, but why does Google block USB OTG?

I havent tried but i imagine its possible whether its stock or not i dont know sorry. You can read from usbs as stock, just install Nexus Media Importer, so cameras could maybe be used with this, phones may get a bit trickier.

look at es file explorer. a must for every android user.
it lets you see network lan shares, your dropbox, skydrive, box, gdrive etc etc - with same ease as your device's local storage.
so you can export the share from your desktop where the files are and copy them on your device from that network share.
or, on your desktop, upload the files to your favorite cloud storage and do the same. have a habit of copying important files to the cloud, just in case your desktop crashes. outside of backing then up like that, you now could access then from anywhere using your mobile devices.
encrypt important stuff.

then you can use any FTP client and send files
no cables. profit
benefit of using this option instead of cloud services like dropbox:
say you have a 1gig file, u have to upload that 1 gig to dropbox, then download that 1 gig from the phone. this way you only send file one time
of course if you only using small files then no benefit
but if u have 50 small files in one folder you can send 1 folder with all the files, instead of 50 individual exports from dropbox or other could service

no different than transferring to any android phone,developed years ago
either connect a cable to your computer or use any of the many cloud service available

I just starting to get familiar with my Nexus 10 16GB tablet. I have an Android phone and a Kindle fire so I've had some experience with transferring files to my devices. When I plug my N10 into my Win7 PC, it shows as a "Portable Device", not a Hard Drive so went I attempt to eject it, that device doesn't show up as a choice to eject. I have no other choice but to 'pull the plug',something I'd uncomfortable with.
Nevertheless, I can double-click into the 'internal storage' and see some of the folders. When I attempt to create a new folder (to attempt some organization), I can create a 'New Folder', but I can't rename it to anything. This is very different from my experience with my Android phone and Kindle Fire.
Anyone got any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong?
