2. Install "Root Checker" from the Android Market (run it to verify that you do have root access). (All such Android Market apps can be installed onto your device via your PC. Visit website, select install, select device, click ok, check connected device)
3. Install "Busybox by Stericson" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install busybox.
4. Install "Acer Recovery Installer" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install a CWM Recovery image (don't use the stock recovery image)
5. Do a backup of your current System Image (because your country-specific factory ROM may not be available on the Internet in case you decide to revert)
Advice from Achristocat: use ClockWorkMod's (a.k.a CWM) backup function (CWM itself is a seperate entity as compared with ClockWorkMod Recovery)
Alternative Advice from rquinn19: Do a nandroid backup (TBD - I am not familiar with this)
6. Backup current android apps (TitaniumBackup -> "Backup all user apps + system data", or alternatively use Astro file manager's tool)
Advice from Euclid's Brother: use "Titanium Backup" which saves the data with it (ie. you don't lose your custom app settings or even your progress in Angry Birds, etc).
You can use the Internal SD card (/mnt/sdcard/TitaniumBackup or /mnt/sdcard/backups) to store/restore backups as long as you don't do any partitioning.
7. Pick a ROM image (I chose Virtuous Galaxy, there's Dexter's Iconia Px, Virtuous Picasso, Taboonay, HoneyVillain etc). Boot into Recovery image to flash the System image - "Booting into recovery" means to power up with VolDown + Power Buttons pressed (VolDown is the volume button closest to the power button)

Advice from FloatingFatMan: You cannot flash ROM from internal memory. You can use external SD or a USB stick
8. Restore android apps: TitaniumBackup -> "Restore missing apps with data" and "Restore all system data", or Astro file manager's tool
If your System image is already rooted, along with CWM Recovery in place, and you just want to try a new ROM, you only need steps 6, 7, 8.
Extras:
1. Install "Drive Mount" from the Android market for accessing NTFS USB hard disks
2. Install "LCDDensity for Root" from the Android market for changing LCD density. Default = 160. Lower value (e.g. 120) implies smaller widgets
This should be useful for the new users or even experienced users that are new to this device.
Thanks
Whats the purpose of changing LCD density for?

I used the backup from CWM...
...and it was Drastically Easy.
I booted into recovery and navigated to backup.
Flashed a couple of ROM to check 'em out which worked, but they both still had enough flaws that I wanted to go back to "where I had been"
Booted back to CWM - Restore from backup...
Super Easy...
I am truly grateful for the DEV's! Making our investment worth more!
One quick (and possibly stupid) question; do I *need* to have a micro SD card in the tablet to install new ROMs? I haven't got a spare one as ~16GB storage on the Iconia is enough for me
If I must do the ROM install from an sd card, I can use the one in my HTC Desire, but I'd rather just do it from the Iconia's internal memory if possible.
You should instruct people to do a nandroid backup somewhere in there before flashing something new.
Mods should sticky this

Hi Euclid, if you could provide a couple of sentences on how and when to use Titanium Backup, I'll include it in the original post e.g. do you use it prior to rooting 3.0.1, is it a free tool etc ? Sorry, I am not familiar with it and I am already on Virtuous. Thanks.

I used an external SD card, following the instructions in the video. For internal flash, we need confirmation from someone else.
Agree on the "do a nandroid" before flashing the first rom. I flashed one and didn't do one and now I can't go back to stock. Not a big deal for me, but I should have done it.

You CANNOT flash from internal memory. You CAN, however, use a USB stick.

Changing LCD Density allows for smaller widgets and hence "more" "real estate" on the screen

2. Install "Root Checker" from the Android Market (run it to verify that you do have root access)
3. Install "Busybox by Stericson" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install busybox
[ig9] Why is this needed? I installed the ROM without Stericson's busybox version.
4. Install "Acer Recovery Installer" from the Android Market and then invoke the app to install a CWM Recovery image (don't use the stock recovery image)
[ig9] There are two choices, is one better than the other? I chose Thor's
5. Do a backup of your current System Image. Recommended so that you can revert back completely to the factory image that was shipped to you.
[ig9] This is NOT optional! One day you will apply a ROM that will completely screw up your system. In these early days, do a nandroid/recovery backup of each ROM version so you can get back to your base configuration. Once new kernels start coming out you'll have to be careful about restoring a nandroid backup and which kernel is belongs with. For now, just do the backup. Once is good enough for each ROM version you want to be able to get back to. Further changes can be restored with Titanium Backup.
a) Boot into recovery.
b) Choose "backup and restore"
c) Choose "Full Backup"
Watch the magic happen
You can also (on other devices at least, not sure if it's working on the Iconia) do a backup from ClockWorkMod and it will let you give the backup a custom name. ClockWorkMod or CWM itself is a separate entity as compared with ClockWorkMod Recovery.
6. Backup current android apps (I used Astro file manager's tool)
Advice from Euclid's Brother and ig9: use "Titanium Backup" which saves the data with it (ie. you don't lose your custom app settings or even your progress in Angry Birds, etc).
Just pay for TB. It's worth the safety net that it provides.
a) Open TB.
b) In the preferences select at least 2 for "Max Backup History" though 5 is my fav. This will let you save at least that many versions of your apps and data and if an app update is broken you can always go back to a working version.
c) Choose "Backup/Restore" tab.
d) Open the menu and choose "batch"
e) Choose "run" next to "Backup all user apps + system data"
f) Choose "Run the batch operation"
Bask in the safety.
7. Pick a ROM image (I chose Virtuous Picasso, there's Dexter's Iconia P2-x, Virtuous Galaxy, Taboonay, HoneyVillain etc). Boot into Recovery image to flash the System image - "Booting into recovery" means to power up with VolDown + Power Buttons pressed (VolDown is the volume button closest to the power button)

[ig9] Don't watch the video. I hate watching videos. It always takes 5x longer than if I could just read the instructions.
1. User Acer Recovery to boot into recovery mode. That's what apps are for and you don't have to use the Iconia neck pinch to get into recovery. Use the big button.
2. If the ROM you're installing is meant to be an update, choose "install zip from sdcard", find the ROM and answer yes to the prompts.
3. If the ROM you're installing is a complete replacement, first do a "wipe data/factory reset" and then jump back to the previous step.
4. "go back" until you reach the main menu.
5. Choose "reboot system now"
Advice from FloatingFatMan: You cannot flash from internal memory. You can use external SD or a USB stick
8. Restore android apps using Titanium Backup or Astro file manager's tool. You only need to do the following if you did a factory reset.
[ig9] When restoring from TB do the following:
6. Open TB.
7. Choose "Backup/Restore" tab.
8. Open the menu and choose "batch"
9. Choose "run" next to "Restore missing apps with data" DON'T choose to restore ALL apps with data. You want to selectively restore system data.
10. Choose "Run the batch operation"
11. Once that's done go back to the main screen (restore will probably take you there)
12. Choose "click to edit filters"
13. Choose the "System" button and then choose "Apply"
14. Now go through all the green items and restore DATA ONLY. This will restore things like account settings, bluetooth pairings and wifi information.
Extras:
1. Install "Drive Mount" from the Android market for accessing NTFS USB hard disks
2. Install "LCDDensity for Root" from the Android market for changing LCD density. Default = 160. Lower value (e.g. 120) implies smaller widgets

Thanks for the guide!
I am pretty experienced with Android and flashing roms etc but I am running into a problem with the Iconia.
I successfully followed the gingerbreak rooting procedure and then installed ClockworkMod recovery via Acer Recovery Installer. I can boot into CWM recovery but when I get there, it can't see the SD card for backups or to install a rom. It says "kernel does not support usb storage."
I have tried two different USB cards so far. I also do not get the usual "Mount USB Storage" when I am connected to a computer, just Acer Sync which I am guessing is normal but the sync utility on my PC never finds the device. Astro file manager can see the sd card.
Can somebody help? I really want to install a custom rom.

Hi!
I was a winmo user (samsung omnia) and I flashed the damn thing regularly, I mean like every week. So I had to reinstall everything from scratch. I don't want to be caught in that loop again, so I am asking you if it is possible to backup all my programs, data and settings and then just apply them after the flash.
Thank you very much, proud Legend user!
Backup contacts : hmm, you don't really have to do this, if you save your contacts on Google account, everytime you login to Google account on your phone, Contact list will be auto appear in People, even avatar pictures.
Apps : Use Astro File Manager to backup all apps in your phone, then flash another ROM, go to market to install Astro again, then backup apps from SD card.
Settings : hmm, I'm not sure you should do this, because everyrom is different, restore settings on this ROM to another ROM may damage your android. But you can always try Titanium Backup on Market.
Thanks! I am still wondering if I should flash because froyo is knocking on our doors.

Yeah froyo is really close, right after the desire the EVO 4G got its OTA.
So I'm expecting the update within 14days I would say a week but that might be to optimistic.

You can def.ly try Titanium Backup to get all your Apps + data backed up. You can also try My back up pro to back up your SMS and MMS along with your call log, Alarm and other application. With my back up pro you can back up to the SD card or online....
Titanium Backup requires root. You can also use MyBackup pro. You can use been root (with more features) or not been root (only backups apps, but not settings, what is not so good)
You can also use ROM Manager (free in the Market) to backup you full ROM and configuration: it will backup everything on SD Card (except your SD card and you can quickly recover old ROMs with full confuration and apps.
So le me get this straight, with rom manager I will be able to back up the entire Rom... cause if something goes wrong and can not update a newer rom, I can always go and choose my previous rom for the recovery screen....

Yes, and everything will be exactly as in the moment you did de ROM backup. It is like a full hard disk image in a PC.
But, consider this:
With ROM Manager, you can have as many backups as you want and you can recover any one of them. BUT, you need to be able to boot your Legend to be able to launch ROM Manager (because ROM Manager is an application)
So, if you meet problems starting up a new ROM, you will need to load any rooted working ROM to be able to start up and launch ROM Manager (need to be rooted to be able to run ROM Manager).
As far as I know, if you use a ROM with A2SD feature, apps will be stored in the EXT3 partition of the SD card, and those apps WILL NOT BE INCLUDED IN BACKUP. So, if apps stored in the EXT3 partition changed, you will need to recover those apps with Titatium Backup.
There is another way to do a full backup called NANDROID, but I do not like it so much:
power off Legend, push "Back" bottom and Power On, select BOOTLOADER, select RECOVERY, connect USB cable to your PC, run "recovery-windows.bat" from your PC (from the same directory you used to root your Legend) and you will be able to select NANDROID BACKUP.
With NADONDROID BACKUP you can do also a full ROM backup, but you can store and recover only ONE backup/last backup. In addition, you need a PC to be able to run it. So, that is not very nice.
ok i see... thanks for the info....
Hello together,
I'm a happy user of ver. 2.0.1, running very fast and had no crashes since the installation two weeks ago.
During this time, I installed much apps and made my own settings for my device.
Can anyone tell me, how to update the system without loosing my data? I can make a full backup first with Titanium Backup and then recover the data.
Many thanks
Bart
you have given the answer of your question. you can load with titanium all your apps after updating the rom.

Hi,
Do you have MAGLDR?
If so,go to 8. ad recovery>back up and restore,and back up your current ROM.
Then after you install your next ROM,go back into ad recovery>backup and restore>advanced restore and:
Data restores your personal information.
Cache restores your settings and any other cached information.
Backup, update and restore
Hi,
thanks for your reply. Yes, I have MAGLDR. For other users having my question in the future, this are steps I made to update - malybru, thanks for your tips, I appreciate!
- Go into MAGLDR, choose point "8", then "backup and restore" -> "backup" (consider, you should have enough free space on your SD card), backup takes about 5-10 minutes
- Power off your phone, take SD card out and copy the new ZIP file with the new rom inside the root folder
- power up your phone, go into MAGLDR, select point "8 - AD recovery". In next screen choose "install zip from sdcard", then "choose zip from sdcard". Select your new ROM (in this case: "HyperDroid-CM7-v2.1.0.XXX.zip" - this is the last file in the list, just press the volume up button on the phone to go to the last entry on sdcard and confirm in next screen, wait until installation is done
- press the "back" key on the phone twice and choose "backup and restore", in next screen the option "advanced restore"
- choose the image to restore, the entry should have following syntax: "YYYY-MM-DD.HH.MM.SS.XXX", you should just see one entry from your entire backup
- select "Restore data" for restoring all your files into the phone memory
- when ready, select "backup and restore", "advanced restore" again
- choose the last backup entry, as described above
- "Restore cache" for restoring all your personal settings
- choose the option "reboot" to start into your new ROM and have fun!
Any comments are welcome

Here is the official user manual as written by the app developer:http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/tita...ser-guide.html
Here is the official Titanium Backup WIKI: TITANIUM WIKI HERE
I could not find any guides on XDA...strange soo maybe someone will correct me (my wife does it all the time!). As you can see by the way i have uploaded the photo screen shots...I'm also a No0b but trying to learn and share as well.
Here is my attempt at a No0b's guide to using basic Titanium features of backing up and restoring. Let's face it this program does so many things but me, for one, I just use the basic functions, so if there are some "Super users" out there please come forward and share your knowledge!
Getting started, I'm using the PRO version so if you are only using the FREE version your menu options and functionality may be different, for example you will not be able to do BATCH Restore, only restoring one by one app.
From the user "Preferences" (Menu/Preferences) make sure that you change the "Max backup history to more than 1" this will allow you to have more than one back up version before the app overwrites the previous backup.... useful if you upgrade an app then realise that it was not such a good idea.
Another tip is that if you have a certain app that you want to retain the backup and user data for then you can simple go the the main app window, select the "Backup / Restore" button then tap on the app that you want to permanently keep a back up of, then tap on one of the backups, then select "Protect this backup". now this version of your back up will always be kept and never over written.
Selecting the "Menu" button in the top righ hand corner of the app gives a full list of features and options of Titanium Back-up.
BACKING UP
Lets assume that you have installed Titanium Back up (PRO) and that you now need to make your first system and user apps back up. Then open the app and then press the icon at the top right of screen which looks like a page with a tick mark on it, then choose "Backup all user data + system data" from the list and hit the "RUN" button to the left of it. (Image #1). For backing up you are now done. Note that if you are a frequent ROM flasher then you might only want to ever back up the USER APPS and data as restoring System apps across ROM is the main culprit of errors from using TItanium Backup. If you decide only to make user app back up then follow this by selecting the "Backup all system data" and on the next screen select the "Deselect all" button, next go through the list of system apps and select only the green coloured items (see below the list of system apps/settings that I recommend you ONLY restore across ROMS. If you apply a filter then you would only see the filtered items so assuming that you filtered for User apps only then you would not see the Titanium GREEN back up items.
RESTORING after Installing a New ROM
After you have done a full wipe and then installed a new ROM you now want to RESTORE your applications and all of their user data, things like settings and user information. Titanium back up is an excellent tool for this but you MUST be careful not to restore any SYSTEM apps or data otherwise you can run in to trouble and it will cause many "FC's". According the the Official TB user guide: Again, if you’re restoring them from a different phone/ROM, enable the “System data migration” option (found under Menu/Preferences and half way down the screen list to the "Restoration Settings" section).
Then open the app and then press the icon at the top right of screen which looks like a page with a tick mark on it, then select BATCH and then scroll down to the RESTORE section and select "Restore missing apps with data". by default the "App+Data" will be checked, leave this option as is for this BATCH task (Image #3). Or you can review the list and manually Deselect one by one any apps that you did not want to restore on this occasion.
Or you can review the list and manually Deselect one by one any apps that you did not want to restore on this occasion. Or if you only want to restore a few of the apps then "Deselect All" and then manually add each app that you want to restore when you have completed your selections then hit the "Run the batch operation" button at the top. (Image #4).
It will take some time for the BATCH to run and re install all of your user installed apps. after the batch has completed then you are ready to install just a few of the other GREEN coloured items from the main menu.
This time from the main application window select the top middle "Backup / Restore" button. (Image #5). Now BE CAREFUL here, i ONLY RESTORE the following options and have never had any problems HOWEVER if you try to restore Accounts and Settings and some other green coloured items you can run in to trouble with FC's....you have been warned but test this out for yourself and report back if you have any success:
What to RESTORE safely:
Bluetooth pairings (User data only)
[Calandar] (User data only)
[Alarms] Clock (User data only)
[Desktop] HTC Sense (User data only) - NOTE it must be the same version as the previous ROM check the currently installed version against your last back up version number, if they match then you can restore and it will put back ALL your old desktop short cuts and screens (but NOT any of your widgets)....very handy one. (Image #12 & #13)
[Bookmarks] (User data only)
[User Dict HTC] (User data only)
[User Dict] (User data only)
Wi-Fi Access Points (User data only)
What NOT to Restore
Accounts
Application Widgets
[Contacts/Cal...]
Country, Language, Time zone
[SMS/MMS/APN...]
[E-Mail Accounts]
[Playlists]
[SMS/MMS Pref....]
[Voicemail]
[Wallpaper/Se...]
[Settings/Blu...]
You will now need to REBOOT your device for the system items to take effect.
Now a little tip that i use, as you will be updating your apps and settings will change almost daily why not set up the Schedule feature so that your apps and also your changed settings data are all backed up every night?
Here is how:
Open the application then select the top right button "Schedules" (Images #22-#24)
now enable the first option and select "Redo backups for modified data" select every day and also change the time to during the nighttime or other suitable time for you when you are not going to be using your phone.
Select the second option and change it to "Backup all new apps & newer versions" and again select the best time for yourself.
That's it, you are done so now you can rest assured that every night your current apps and user data will be backed up and ready for the next days flashing of new ROM's.
And one final tip that i use.........when setting up a ROM from scratch, do not sign in to the Google account until AFTER you have RESTORED all the user Apps with Titanium as the Market will try to restore all your apps from your Market user history, which is OK but will conflict with your BATCH RESTORE using TItanium Backup, not to mention the use of your DATA PLAN to download all from the Play Store that will be overwritten by your Titanium back up anyway!.
You should also make a copy of your installed version of Titanium Backup App to allow you to restore it on the new ROM without having to go to the Market for the reason detailed above. (Folder: /data/app/com.keramidas.TitaniumBackup-1.apk)
enjoy.
Here is another useful post regarding back ups and using Titanium, ROM Manager and Android back-up/Restore:

Nice guide!
I already mentioned this at the Runnymede AIO thread but I thought it couldn’t hurt to do it again. I used to get the "no icons on the lock screen" problem when restoring system settings and someone mentioned it somewhere that if you run the "setup" it will fix the problem.
I personally restore system settings every time I install a new rom and this solves my problems every time.
I Hope this trick helps...
For anyone with 50+ apps, I HIGHLY suggest them to buying the pro version of Titanium Backup. EVERYTHING is automated so you don't have to install apps one by one. It's MUCH faster and saves tonnes of time.
I would advise the pro version for anyone a it allows multiple backups and drop box, also its nice to support the developer......he is always updating the app and improving it further.

Guys,
I have the pro version of TB, latest version installed. I have enabled BOX (cloudsync) but I don't understand how it works really....
I have obviously BOX installed on my phone, logged in so no issues there.
But there's nowhere in TB to login onto BOX so how does TB know what account to use? How to use that option? I have enabled it in TB but it doesn't upload anything...
thanks
if it works the same as dropbox, look under schedules, the last schedule is sync to .... , if you run it TB asks for your credentials. it did for me, but i'm using dropbox
thanks a lot. I found it. Unfortunately when I click on "Edit", there's no way to edit the schedule. As if the upload had to be done manually only (I can't choose a day, time etc.. I want to upload).
Can you do that with Dropbox pls? thnx again

First go to preferences in TB then tick the option to use "Box". Next set up a schedule in the schedule tab and below should be the box sync option....... Set it to sync from there at the time you want.

thanks but that's my issue, when I click on "edit" to edit the "Sync to Box" schedule, I have no options for time and date at all! It just goes back to the BOX settings which are "Remote Location, Labels to Syncrhonize and History Coverage"....
That the same as with drop box. Try hitting the run button of box from the schedules tab in titanium and then it should ask you to login or will take you to an "allow titanium to access box" just give approval. I think that after running for the first time manually that it will run automatically after each new scheduled back up operation......

Missing BackUp Files....
I have double checked my sdcard and the titanium backup folder is quite large. I go to ti backup and checked the setting for backup location. I even had it scan everything. It points back to the same folder. It is re-syncing / restoring my prefs automatically (for ti backup - box was checked for that). The only thing I can think of is deleting the prefs file for it. Where is that certain file?
I have wiped my phone. I can nandroid back or can restore from nandroid. I prefer not to as that is why I chose ti backup. Im not even going into the new version of my backup pro (which refuses to do a complete backup).
Once upon a time titanium backup would have the backed up yet missing apps under currently installed apps, just with a strike-thru. They are missing now, there is a large blank space there.
Issue 2- I cannot get a update zip to work properly either. I have had to copy the apk to my sd card and then open it to get it installed or use market. Keeps telling me invalid script.?
Unfortunately on a Locked Droid X2. If I am over looking something please let me know.

I always find the uninstalled apps right down at the bottom of the titanium apps list. just go all the way down. Regarding the use of the update.zip feature....I have never used it so have no previous knowledge about how it works......
For the Titanium back up folder size...how many back ups have you allowed it to make? I selected for maximum of 4 back ups but probbly 2 is enough and then you protect any special apps with their settings if you feel the need ( I used this approach for some of my GPS applications).
I have just upgraded to the HTC One-X so I'm now factory stock without ROOT at this time so can not even install Titanium Backup.....!
If anyone else knows some trick of the update.zip function please post a reply, thanx!
How to keep Device backup up-to-date
Here I am discussing to keep data up to date, so you can test different ROM without worrying about losing your data. As well this is safe, in case of you need to have wipe your device in emergency.
Basically our device have two types of data. 1.Static 2. Dynamic.
-Static data is like ROM,Kernel,application mods,account,settings etc.
-Dynamic data is like contacts, msgs, user applications etc. Which are getting change everyday. This type of backup need to update regularly or can say schedule backup is ideal for such data.
So backup should be create differently for both cases.
I prefers Nandroid backup for static data. This will help you when you want to switch back to your original ROM anytime, without flashing that ROM, Editing kernel or adding accout setting etc.
and Titanium for dynamic data. This needs schedule backup, so you need not to worry anymore for losing contacts, SMS, your game level etc.
After restoring Nandroid backup OR Moving to newer ROM this data will bring your device to condition, which was almost before flashing new ROM.
Backup :
1.Nadroid Backup :
This is can backup your full ROM + Custom Kernel + Data
But as above said, I prefers to use this as Backup only static data rather than have full backup. I think this will be more suitable if you create Backup of just Base. e.g System. As data we always have modify in day to day activity, but system will remain same.
- So better to keep Backup of ROM + Mods if you are using like call recording, launcher,any dumped application you have, OR any stuff you are using with pushing in system ROM.
- Better to have backup after adding your account, as this will save your time. But keep Account sync off (otherwise backup will includes contacts, calendar) and when you will restore, it may have changed.
- - Add your preferable setting like sound, tone, keyboard, language, country etc. As these setting usually we need not to change, once it applied.
- Add Titanium backup, Root Explorer application, as this is useful immediately after restoring backup
Now Create Nandroid backup of above said contents with recovery. It is better to put note along with backup, so you can easily get idea which backup contains what, particularly when multiple backup are there.
2.Data Backup :
Here list of things we need to have backup day to day.
1.Contacts : There is option available in contact – menu – Import/Export, This is best tool when you manually wiping, as this is most secure backup. Contacts also gets backup automatically if you keeping Accoun sync ON. Though will discuss in next step how to auto backup.
2.Camera snaps : Usually very precious data, and stores in Internal storage by defaults, so won’t erase during wiping/hard reset(except specially you select to format USB storage). But still better way you can change setting in camera appl storage location to Ext SD card, so need not to worry, if you need to format USB storage any time.
3.SMS –
4.bookmarks –
5.Call Logs
6.Calendar – As said it also auto sync with google acc, but will discuss in next session
7.Personal dictionary, usually swype dictionary auto add all names and words you are having in contacts, will discuss next session
8.Applications –
So after having backup of all mentioned above, you need not to have worry about data, and you can fearlessly flash any ROM without worrying about losing data.
Hete now will discuss how to setup Titanium backup to backup all mentioned thing automatically.
Schedule Backup :
1.Open Totanium and make this change
Menu – preferance – Auto-sync TB –This will save all change you make on Titaniu, and need not to set everytime after re installing TB.
As well if you have sufficient space on card, select to have 3-5 copies of backup.
2.Now first create backup of full device, once your device is full prepared with everything..
batch – backup – select ‘Backup all user app + system data’
This will have full backup of all your installed appl and data.
3.Now from backup/restore screen, select ‘Click to Edit filter’ See image below)
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
select ‘create lable’
name it e.g. ‘data only’
select add/remove elements
Now just select green and yellow colored listing – and Ok from Rt upper corner tick mark.
Now come to schedules
Pick one from listed – Edit
First line select with Backup new user+syst app & newer version (see image)
Second line – no filtering
Select time (when your device remains in non use)
Select days of week you want to backup (idle daily)
And save.
Now pick another one – Edit (see image below)
First line select – ‘Backup all system data’
Second line select –[Label] data only (OR name which you applied above)
Same way above select time and days of backup and save.
So schedule 1 will backup all application which you install day to day, and schedule 2 will backup all the data like bookmark,contacts, personal dictionary,SMS,calendar,call logs etc as per your selected time.
And keep data up to date.
Backup of homescreen
This is usefull when you have multiple folder on your homescreen like I have in this picture.
Here you need to have backup of Tw Launcher(or touch wiz home if you are using TW5), but remember when to restore, just select data only.
Restoring :
So whenever you need to wipe OR you want to switch over from different ROM, just go this way
1.Restoring after wiping
If you have same ROM and just wipe data then restore with Titanium is enough
- Install titanium, bacup/Restore screen and just select all yellow colored backup and restore, if you want to restore dictionary,calendar,storage select those from green colored list and restore
- Batch – restore – select ‘missing appl with data’ and restore.
2.Restoring from other ROM
better flash same kernel, on which you have create nadroid backup and restore nandroid backup of base as mentioned at starting of post.
Then restore rest of things as mentioned in 1. above.
-----------------------
@ All newbies using titanium backup
I have read to many cases, user losing backup made by titanium after factory reset
This is b'coz by default titanium backup make makeup folder on internal SD card, and factory reset wiping this folder too, so at end of factory reset you won't have any data to restore
to prevent this, always use storage to Ext SD card instead of int SD card
How to ?
-create new folder on ext Sd card and name it like titaniumbackup
-open titanium - menu - preference -backup folder location
Now this will show all backup files, press back menu and navigate to new folder you have created
and use 'use current folder'
It will ask to move all data - move it.
Now back to preference menu and check mark 'Auto-sync TB setting'
this will remember your choice after installing TB next time
Now you are safe and can wipe cache and data without losing your backup.
Titanium Backup does the same i think. But I would love to have a great tutorial on this by you bro
Yes but many user having confusion about to select proper option for them.

interested. Interested in doing it properly!
Would be very nice if you could make a tutorial
Was thinking about this (how to backup files and how to update it) a few days ago and started playing with Titanium Backup but unable to figure it out even though I see that there is a schedule option for backup. So with this guide that your going to make it would be alot helpful. So +1 for the interested party/group.
Anyway i have just managed for time and almost it is ready, you will see it soon.
Thanks, good job.
i need to back up all the info in this guide Dr !

,how to take backup of launcher?
i use always gobackup free from the market to take backup of apps + data, sms, call log, contacts. launcher layout, MMS etc...in one go and it hardly takes 3-4 minutes to restore everything in one shot...I felt it is better than titanium backup atleast for backups
Ketan, thanks for putting in so much time and effort in creating this and other guides. Very much appreciated!

I was not much familiar with gobackup but just i had look it after reading your post, what i cudn't findout is schedule. Does that have it?
B'coz data contents are everyday changes and really painful to take regular bakup manually.

Dr.Ketan,
I went to recovery and selected backup. There was no options to select or deselect anything and everything got backed up.
Q1. Where is this backup stored so that i can delete it. Is it safe to delete.
Q2. Please elaborate on nandroid backup steps so that we can follow correctly.
You will find it in clockworkmode folder on ext sd card.

Noob friendly guide to clean install ROM.
Ok friend here posting some steps to clean Install ROM and how to keep device ready to clean install ROM with minimal risk of loosing data with keeping data restore handy.
I have devided this guide in Three sctions.
If you are first time flashing custom ROM then first part of this guide is not much helpful to you. Move to section 2 (installing ROM) as well read post#2
1.Pre Flashing - How to keep device ready to clean install ROM/Wipe
2.Installing ROM
3.Post flashing data restore.
1.Pre Flashing preparation and data backup management.(for rooted device)
Here for this I do prefer titanium with schedule backup to keep my data protected on daily basis and describing below how do I prefer to manage it.
Ok let's start with schedule backup with titanium. This step will secure you to keep your data backup everyday without your interference.
- Install Titanium backup from play store (features mentioned here best managed with Pro version only)
- Now open titanium application and select click to edit filter as shown in screenshot below
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",

"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
-In next screen select create label. see image below
-Now give this filter a desired label like here i gave data only in below screenshot. After this select add/remove elements in same screen. This is very inportnt step and you have to decide what elements you requires to backup daily. In my case giving you some examples like
contact storage ( look for contac storage green color to make contact backup), Messages (yellow colored) to make backup of SMS. like this. You can select your desired application data to make backup according your needs. But I strongly recommend to make backup od these two only from system application part. Though another important app is Launcher which can helpful to restore your launcher setting (Homescreen) for that you need to select TouchWiz home (red color). Also note that when you restore red color backup, select only to restore data only. we will discuss again in restoring section. Ok you can also select third party elements which changes data frequently. in my case I don't use stock launcher so selecting third party launcher so whenever i do change my homescreen setting, i need not to worry about it. Anyway it's enough to make clear what you have to select here is only application which data frequently get changes.
Once you finish this setup you will see your filter in nect screen
-Now come to main screen and select Schedule. See image below
-Now here you can see two pre defined rule here on ths page. see image below
-Select first rule by tapping on edit on first rule. Now next screen is very important and you will find three tables. Here in below screenshot as I shown select first tab to "Backup new user app and New version" This will ake backup of all user app which backup is not present. Also it will make re backup if you update application version.
second tab is keep no filtering so all user app will backup and third tab should setup to 'Any' so it can make backup without any power condition.
Also in lower part select desired day and time when to make backup. You can select daily or on selected day. I prefer to do during our sleeping time so it can do silently.
-Now click on edit button of second rule. This is for backup of all app and data for which you have created lebel.
Now on first table select 'All user App + System data" and in next table (filter) select label which you have created earlier. So this will make backup of only stuff which you have selected in add/removal elements while creating label. Also recommended to keep 'Any' under power condition of third table.
Same as before here defined your prefered time to make backup. Keep considerable time between first and second rule so app will remain free at time od backup of second rule.
-Ok most of setup is now finished and select menu key - preference from titanium app and Check mark 'Auto-Sync TB setting' This will save setting on SD card and when you install Titanium next time all above made setting will be retrived autometically.
-I prefer to keep titanium backup folder on Ext SD because many times you may needs to wipe IntSD too. Also prefereable to make periodic manual backup of titanium backup folder to PC from Ext SD card. you can set loaction from Menu - preernce - Backup folder location.
-also recommended to keep multiple copy of backup by selecting Number of backup under menu-preference. This is important when one backup failed then old to that backup may be useful
So this is all about keep device ready to make backup of your device anytime on daily basis. Though you can manually run scheduled backup by selecting 'RUN' in schedule-rule just before flashing ROM to assure latest settings are being backup already.
2.Flashing ROM
1.Flash your desired CWM/TWRP if you are still on stock recovery. - READ POST #2 FOR DETAIL ABOUT FLASHING RECOVERY.
Note that your device not required to be rooted to flash custom ROM. Just having CWM/TWRP (what is recommended by your ROM developer)
2.Download and copy ROM file to your SD card (Int/Ext)
(Here I am showing example of Philz recovery and some option may be different in case of you are using other recovery)
3.Reboot to recovery and select wipe data (for clean installation) (see image)
4.Select Install zip and then select zip from SD (where you copied) (see image)
5.Now wait here and don't immediately confirm by pressing 'yes' but wait till it finish md5 check. (see image) MUST READ
Once it finish md5, compare it with below provided md5 sum and select yes only if it matches. If it doesn't match that means your download is corrupted and needs to redownload.
Ok Next important thing to mentione here is management of bootloop
So many users experiences bootloop after flashing ROM, even after clean install. This is most of due to corrupt data and common issue on kitkat based ROM.
Here recommended steps in case you get bootloop.
1.Make sure you have checked MD5. I have desribed here how to check md5 on device above wit Philz recovery. I strongly recommend to check MD5 on device because sometime file can be corrupted while transffering from PCto device. In case you are using other recovery then you can use root explorer from play store to check MD5. Open root explorer - navigate to ROM file - Long press and select properties. Vait for some time while it finish calculating MD5 and once it matches with one provided on ROM thread.
2.Use recovery which is recommended by developer of ROM.
3.Before flashing ROM wipe data and then install ROM.
4.If still issue then you can try flashing stock recovery and then wipe data with stock recovery. NOTE that wiping data with stock recovery will erase all data from Int SD too.
5.Even after this issue persist then last final way is to flash stock ROM with Odin and then wipe data using stock recovery. After that follow install instruction as said above.
Now After successful flashing ROM last step is to restore data
3.Post flashing Restoring data.
1. First complete setup wizard and wait till you get homescreen. Now here wait for your device to become cool. On first boot after clean install media scanner will scan all drive and Index srvice also will run that will make device quite hot. and this depends on data on your device (5 to 30min) Don't intall anything during this period and wait till device gets cool. (This waiting period is optional but still recommended to prevent any unwanted issue)
2.Now reboot device and add your google account. If you have cloud backup for your contacts then let sync to finish and as soon as you add google account your contacts will be restored autometically. Ifyou don't want to sync contact data then immdiately open account-google and select 'Cancel sync' now you can manually select each option which you want to select if you needs selected data to sync only.
3.In case you don't sync contacts with google server then now time to restore from backup you made by other way. Apart from titanim other way to backup contacts is from contact application itself. for that you needs to make bachup before wiping device by
Contact - menu -Impoort/Export - export (SD/ExtSd)
If you have make backup this way then now restore it by doing this in reverse. Contact-men-Import/Export-Import (from where you created backup)
In case you have created backup by titanium then
Open titanium app - look for contact storage (green color) and select it - restore -data only. Remeber this step you have to do after adding google account only otherwise you can't see contacts.
Next is restore SMS
Open titanium - look for Messages (Yellow color) - select - restore -data only
Now reboot device and check contacts and messages are restored correcly
4.Restore rest of app and data.
For this open titanium - menu - batch action - Select "Restore missing app with data" option Here very important thing on next screen is to keep selected two option a.App + data and b.Exclude System apk. This option a will restore all your app including data like game level (may not with few app), credential of app, settings/preferences of app etc and option b will prevent any junk file of preveios ROM to inject.
After confirming of these two options now check list of app which going to restore. Have a look again and deselect any app you don't needs as well an app you don't know what is it (sometimes old ROM junk can be seen here)
Once restore process start, keep patience and let it finsh. During this time device getting hot is normal. and once restore finish, simply reboot device and open application whih requires to give auto notification. Also open applications manually which require root permission. Remember some application can't work unless you manually open it once after titanium restore.
Also to remind that if you find lots of application causing force closes after restoring titanium then may e your ROM is not fixed for it and you needs to Install TB restore fix from play store and needs to apply fix. Also to note you needs to do it everytime you restore titanium data.
OK friends I think lots for now and will update if I find anything missin here. Thiugh it's long to read but I can assure once you do it, you will never worry about wiping device. and it's one time investment to keep device clean
All the best and happy flahing !
This is for users who first time ever flashing custom ROM.
First you should know difference between stock recovery and custom recovery at least visual difference. So if you don't know how stock recovery looks then first put device in recovery this way
Turn off device. Press Vol UP + Home + Power simultaneously. once you see samsing logo on screen just release power button and keep holding other two. Soon you will see some menu on screen. Note down options available and this is stock recovery. Now move On
1.First make backup of your contacts and SMS. you can do it without having device rooted too. For contacts you can sync with google account OR making backup locally from contact app-menu-Import/Export-Export to (USB/Rxt SD) I recommend ExtSD if you have ext SD card because sometime you needs to wipe IntSD card and may you lose data from IntSD (USB storage) For SM you can use samsung account OR offline with third party app like SMS Backup/Restore
2. Remember that for Installing custom ROM you don't needs to have device rooted. Just only having custom recovery (CWM/TWRP) is enough.
Here is guide to flash custom recovery.
First download tar OR tar.md5 format recovery. If you don't know where to get then seek help from ROM thread which you want to flash and get download link of recovery recommended by respective ROM developer.
Once you get custom recovery in tar format, you needs odin. Also make sure you have installed Kies OR Samsung USB drivers on your PC. I prefer samsung driver only.
Remember you don't connect device to PC while flashing with any extension cable. Simply use single cable to connect device with PC. If it is desktop machine then choose one from backside (direct connects to MoBo
Also make sure your machine's firewall is Off and also turn off antivirus if any you have installed on machine.
Now you are ready to go.
3.Turn off your device. Once it turn off completely, press three button Vol Down + Home + Power to put device in download mode.
Now you will see warning screen and press Volume up to continue
After this you will see green android logo and text Downloading...
4.Open Odin from PC and select PDA (On new version of Odin it will be AP) and navigate to custom recovery which you have downloaded in tar/tar.md5 version. See image below for No3
5.Connect your device to PC and soon ID:COM tab will be turn to different color once device is detected. (see No 1 in above Image)
6. Keep selected Auto reboot and Reset time as shown in Image above
7. Now click on start button (no5 in image above)
8.It will take few seconds to finish process and you will see Pass/RESET msg on first tab of Odin. Now you can disconnect device and it will auto reboot.
9.Turn off device and put device in recovery as said very first on this post. If your recovery is changed from first look of stock recovery then you have successfully finished first task. Now move to post 1 above and part 2 Installing ROM section to continue to flash custom ROM.
10.If even after flashing custom recovery you recovery not changes and same as stcok look you have before flashing then follow this.
11. Follow steps 3 to 5 above and after this uncheck Auto reboot option (no 2 in above image) and finish steps 7.
12. Now this time your device won't reboot auto but when you see Pass/REST msg simply disconnect devie and put device in recovery manually bu Vol UP + Home +Power (as said initially)
13.Now you should have custom recovery. and you are ready to proceed for Flashing custom ROM. Head toward post #1 avove section 2 (Installing ROM)
GoofLuck.

Very very thank you Dr.ketan...
Can I ask you...
Which are the apps requiring root permission and/or to be given auto notification, that you advise to manually open after titanium data restore?
I think I have never read something so useful in any thread about flashing roms...Great??
Great thread. I would just add to backup external datas for certain apps like WhatsApp: they're stored in the internal sd and may get lost when formatting it, since usually Titanium doesn't include them in its backup.

I said that about third party (User) applications. Like any third party app you have restored with titanium and that requires root you should trigger supersu permission by asking it. sometimes what happen that it ask supersu permission while you are not monitoring device and you may miss it and app can't perform action. Also some app are not having auto restart option so these kind of app also needs to open it once after restoring with TB
In short user Applications you restored with titanium needs to open once to get it activated.
Very thank you Dr.ketan... Never done so even more precious is your advice ?

Doc, lets say XDA v1.2 is install and i did TB backup manually for that on my microSD card. Later on XDA v1.3 is installed how can i make it automatically overwrite the previous verison on the microSD card without deleting it manually?
Not sure if im asking this correctly
It depends on how many backup to keep is selected under preferences. If you select one then earlier will be erased automatically once you backup new.

Alternatively, if one has problems with any backups on external SD, mostly on KitKat firmwares due to write to SD permission revoked for 3rd party apps, one can use this app - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.genie9.gcloudbackup to make backup on cloud storage and keep it secure forever and restore hassle free(until you forget your password ).
Does not require root, so its fine for those coming from stock to custom directly without rooting.

I have been using Titanium Backup Pro for several years--but, there is stuff in your guide, dr. ketan, that was completely new to me--it is so very useful.
Now doing a clean install will be soooo much easier.
thanks,
