[Q] All I/O owners is your tab rooted? - Galaxy Tab 10.1 General

Curious because when I sync my account on google (my galaxy phone was rooted) I had SU installed on the i/o tab. Just for fun I downloaded titanium backup and lo I got SU access!
Without me doing anything (I had to wipe data with fast boot because of the boot loop issue) I have a rooted tablet

Same thing happened to me. I suspect the .img I used in fixing the boot loop was a rooted .img? Not complaining mind you, but would like to know what is going on

I rooted mine as soon as I got home from I/O.

Nandroid backups not working?????

Last night (after a few drinks) I got playing in kernel manager and decided to flash a dal oc kernel I haven't used in a while. After its done flashing it puts me in a bootloop so I go to recovery (I always nandroid before I do ANYTHING) and go to my most recent back up, only it brings me to the "welcome to the nexxus s press here to get started" (I did the build.prop for Netflix). Any backup I go to its like I've done a full wipe and I'm starting from scratch with my new nexxus s. But here's the kicker.... my NC has NEVER been faster. This thing is lightning quick, no lag, no glitches, just the most responsive its ever been. I'm running cm7 nl 101, stock kernel and obviously nexxus s build.prop. Any ideas why none of my back ups work? And why the drastic change in responsiveness to my NC? I'm happy with the way its running but I put a lot of work into my setups and of course plants vs zombies lol.
Thanks in advance,
Dave

Question: How to backup a stock/unrooted Fire?

Ok, I love my stock/unrooted Kindle Fire. I use it every day as is, but I want to try some of the ROMs out there to make it more of a tablet. I Sideload a number of apps not normally available in the Amazon market which seems fine for now so I'm in no realy hurry... Just things like Swype, Gmail, Play/Marketplace... etc would be nice.
However, In order to try this I have to wipe what I have... I have game saves that I don't want to lose (World of Goo, Plants Vs. Zombies, Peggle... etc.) I usually use Titanium Backup to do this on my phones but without rooting the KF I can't use Ti and it seems that I can't Root without wiping out all my data first.
Unfortunately, the Key Words of "Backup" "Stock" and "Unrooted" returns nearly everything within these forums so if you know a thread for doing this please feel free to direct me there since I can't seem to find a way to separate the wheat from the chaff.
OOps, I just realized I wasn't in Q&A when I posted... Go easy on me it was an honest mistake.
u can make a backup first if u want.
fastboot flash a recovery first.
fastboot flash bootloader
get into recpvery n make a backup immediately. then root after

Sounds easy enough... Reason I am leary is that in a lot of the initial device rooting I've dealt with, the initial recovery and bootloader are loaded along with a ROM which overwrites the data to a version which is rootable. If the Recovery and Bootloader images are seperate and won't touch the data then I would be a happy camper.
In digging further It looks like there is also a temporary root method but I can't confirm if the SU and TiBackup will work properly on a stock Fire with temp root. That would be perfection if they do... anyone without data they can't stand the thought of losing willing to verify?
what temp root? if there was, e would rewrite too methods lol.
we root via fastboot just like the nexus 7.

There was a method posted in the KF forum for using the Amazon Prime videos and still being rooted. I decided to just go full bore and just rooted/flashing TWRP.
Thanks for the help/suggestions! If I blow something up I'll come back a'lookin.

[Q] jwr66y- few apps immediatly crash

Hey, I've done a full wipe as well as return to stock, then proceed to install jwr66y from scratch, after installing i proceeded installing twrp and superuser, everything seems to run fine with root and all. The only thing which has been bothering me is that some apps are displaying force close error immediatly after starting them. Examples are Adaway, Adfree and Yelp.
Anyone knows what's going on there?
Same thing with me, some apps just crash immediately. I'm glad I made a backup before I installed. I installed the ota through a zip to preserve root/custom recovery and also just installing it normally. Same thing happens with crashes.

Yeah i also installed though a Zip which was supposed to be vanilla with added busybox and root.
I had my nexus 7 running so i was backing up from there which fixed the problem. However i am really wondering why apps which were downloaded straight from google play messed around.
I hope they won't mess around later.
I was completely stock and the same thing happened to me. I had to erase recovery, data and boot loader through fastboot and then reinstall everything new from the factory image on Google's site.

Oh wow. I had to do that with the initial 4.3 release. Don't think I'll do it for such a minor update unless I have a lot of free time. Though, the software update notification is in the way most of the time.. In surprised this isn't affecting more devices.

Nexus 4 w/ PAC 4.2.2 Bricked, need help in recovering data

Background
- I'm using PAC 4.2.2 ever since I bought my Nexus 4 and was quite happy with the ROM until yesterday
- I started losing out the GSM signal for the past 2 weeks, it would intermittently go off and then come back by itself after a few seconds, at times few minutes (never thought it could be a ROM issue, is it?)
- Google started pushing its update and I had to manually stop data for Google Services from Settings -> Data Usage
Problem
Yesterday while updating Angry Birds from the Play Store the Play store crashed. I tried to open it but it would continue to crash as soon as it would try to load it.
I rebooted the device however since then its stuck on the google logo and doesn't proceed.
I have TWRP recovery installed and when it boots in to (Fastboot is it called?) it shows Secure Boot - enabled and Lock State - unlocked.
Few foolish things that I tried yesterday (in desperation) that might have already screwed up my phone beyond recovery....
1. Wiped Cache and Dalvik Cache and tried to reboot but it didn't work
2. Flashed the new PAC 4.2.3 version that I had downloaded way back but still no success
3. Tried to take a backup from TWRP recovery however while restoring it fails and shows the message 'Restore Failed'
I really wish to recover the media that is in the phone and contacts if possible.
I have Google Nexus 4 Toolkit (not sure of the version but its like 8-10 months old) installed in my laptop and if I connect the phone and start the toolkit it recognizes the phone against adb (shows a serial number) but when I try to back it up it stops at 'Waiting for adb mode...'
I'm a total noob when it comes to recovery etc. so would really appreciate any help that leads to data recovery in my phone somehow, thanks!
Internal memory is accessible through ADB over recovery so you could easily get your data if it is still there. About the contacts - if they are Google contacts and saved to your gmail - happy days, nothing to worry about. But if they are phone contacts I don't think you'll be able to restore them.
Do you know what is the worst thing about smart phones? That the owner should be smarter than the device in order to operate it.

What would be the steps that I'd have to follow for this? I have TWRP recovery installed.
EDIT: I even tried a complete wipe but it doesn't work. Also tried using CWM as recovery, that didn't work either. Installed the Unified_Android_ToolKit (latest version), updated all USB/adb drivers but whenever I try to backup anything through the toolkit all I get is that it is waiting for the adb mode or its waiting for the USB debugging to be enabled (which I can't since I can't get the phone to boot up).
Any ideas?
Don't try to restore any data after full wipe. It won't work. Flash factory images to get your device into operable state again but before that go to Device Manager and make sure that the phone is recognized by the computer and the drivers for it are properly installed. Good luck. Can you still access twrp recovery?

After having given up all hope to retrieve any data or contacts I wiped the entire phone, format data I mean. However, with that I've ended up with no OS on the phone, I can access TWRP though. Not sure how badly I've ended up screwing the phone. :silly:
Not badly at all... Reboot your phone into Boot loader mode. Download the Google factory images of your choice and run the flash-all.bat file. Enjoy your fully restored phone in a couple of minutes.

How exactly do I run the flash-all.bat file? I tried flashing the factory image using the Unified Toolkit however there comes an error message stating that there is some issue in the program and it has to close. This happens somewhere midway when it starts flashing system.img and recovery.img
EDIT: I can't get in to recovery mode any more and neither can I flash any recovery
EDIT2: Don't ask me what I did, somehow managed to get the phone running in the 4.2.2 version of stock factory image. 4.4 wasn't working for some reason. Setting it up for use now.
Question: Can I simply download 4.4 factory image and install it on my Nexus 4 which came with 4.2.2. when I bought it?

Even when I wasn't able to follow any of the instructions you provided (my bad though) I would like to thank you for just posting on the thread man! :good:
BTW a good news that I'd want to share is that my contacts were backed up I lost on the media but its fine I think, probably a good lesson for future.
I'm updating to 4.3 from system update as of now, will use it as it is for time being and move on to 4.4 sometime later maybe. Not sure whether 4.4 will be available for update OTA once I move to 4.3 but I'm happy with whatever's left of the phone for now...thanks again!

Rogers D803 - KK update vs Root

Hi all!
Rogers has just released KK update.
Since there's no root method as of now for 4.4, I decided to root my phone this morning prior to performing the update.
My question:
Do I also need to install a custom recovery (TWRP) BEFORE upgrading to 4.4 if I want to keep root access?
Is it sufficient to be rooted (without custom recovery) in order to keep root access after 4.4 update?
I already downloaded the update to my phone but opted to install the update later.
So I'm hoping this way, I won't have any issues with the phone not wanting to download the update because of a not stock recovery detected.
Thanks in advance!

The upgrade erases the whole phone, so you can't keep root access. There's no root yet for KK on g2.

I upgraded my G2 on Rogers today and lost root, however there is at least one person who did it while keeping root, check this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51363510, for more info. From what we can see he did a factory reset and uncheck the enable superuser box in SuperSU, whereas I did not do either of those things. The Update DOES NOT wipe the phone if you do it via OTA, I believe it might if you install it via the KDZ.
Yes and if you have su pro you can also try survival mode and if you want to take ota you cannot have custom recovery

I tried the kk update via ota on my rogers LG g2 yesterday. I'm rooted and have twrp installed. In super user I checked temp unroot and ota survival and then problems started. I got stuck at twrp. Powering off and on, rebooting I always ended up at twrp. I used the terminal line and followed from some other post and got my phone back up. Now not sure how to proceed to install the update. So sticking to 4.2.2 for now. Anyone have any clues or should I do a stock recovery or would hard factory reset help?

Bell D803 Root, FOTA, Fun
Just the other day, I decided to root my LG G2 (Bell D803), and found a TWRP Recovery that installed properly (was warned in several locations NOT to use a D802 recovery or ROMs!). Got myself rooted using ioroot (lovely tool), nice new recovery, then found no ROMs really ready for use on the D803 (although I hear some folks have been able to get D802 ROMs working with effort). Barely had time to start exploring my further options when the FOTA update appeared. Not thinking, I grabbed it immediately!
And then the phone went into a boot loop -- Recovery was my only option. Tried looking around within Recovery for any sign of the FOTA update files but later found it goes to a partition. Apparently wiping this partition brings the phone back to a usable state.
adb shell
dd if=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota of=/sdcard/fota-backup.img
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/fota
Once back in usable mode (still with root at this point, but no shiny new KitKat), I did some digging to try figure out how to get rid of my new Recovery so I can get the update. The shortest possible path I found: the LG Mobile Support Tool. I ran it, it said there was an update. Downloaded the update and all was good -- aside for remnants of root being left over (just needed to uninstall Superuser app; wasn't working at this point anyway).
So for now, I'm rootless but fully updated.

Thanks mate. I was stuck in a boot loop as well, but getting rid of the partitions you mentioned revived my phone without the need to reflash to stock.
KK can wait, JB was working fine for me anyway.

Yes. Just doing the update it offered restored my Recovery back to stock and upgraded stock ROM. No wipe necessary and only thing lost was root. There was a brief warning that updates are not available on rooted setups, but I haven't seen that again after the initial boot. I suspect removing Superuser solved this but I'll keep you posted.

Use the LG Mobile Support tool, change country to Canada. It Will tell you there is an update for your phone. It will analyze your phone and proceed with the download. Just sit back and let it do it's thing. It will update your phone and remove root and custom recovery if you have one installed. Hope this helps
