[Q] Have I possibly bricked my myTouch 4G? - myTouch 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I am in a big problem it seems. This is what happened: My phone was working fine with CM7 and latest version of CW Mod but suddenly everything started force closing. So what I did was to factory reset the phone from recovery wiping cache and davlik cache. After doing factory reset it stopped at splash screen itself and not booting up. Does factory reset removes rooting for mt4g?
After that, I tried to install ADB and root again but adb devices doesnt show my device when I am in recovery. But when I go to fastboot it, fastboot devices cmd shows my device.
I then tried to go back to stock by applying PD15IMG and it successfully applies it but now it gets stuck at "my"splash screen. What should I do now?
Thanks in advance.

Uh oh... Sounds like bad eMMc chip which no, can't be fixed. I'd see if you can check your eMMc but if not I believe your screwed and will have to send back to tmo.

Do you get any cache errors in recovery when wiping?
Did you upgrade your radio to a version other than stock before attempting to restore to factory using PD15IMG?
It's starting to sound like a bad eMMC at this point though. Those things are starting to fail left and right!

I will check eMMC and post it here. But yes, while wiping cache I get error E: cant open /cache/ or something like that so i assumed that it might be because i got unrooted and I wanted to root again (but i cant adb). When applying ROM, it exits saying Status 1. No, I didn't upgrade radio images.

Fc followed by bootloop followed by cache errors...definitely eMMc

Because of applying PD15 image I got original h-boot version (not engineering h-boot) so couldn't check eMMC. But I have radio version which is 26.03.02.26_M
If I assume that eMMC is gone then, Is there any other option of doing ANYTHING except sending it to TMobile as I am using it outside US.

Bootloader version has nothing to do with being able to check eMMC version.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1081243
Somewhere in there there's instructions for checking without root if you've lost it already.

Thanks for the link but I can't adb. fastboot shows my device but adb doesn't. I don't know if there is any problem with my drivers. because when i plug the phone in is shows ADB Interface in Device manager. Still I will check them again will try to put eMMC version ASAP.

Someone posted some instructions a while back that allowed you to check your eMMC version using terminal commands, so you could do it without root or ADB, but for the life of me I can't find them! I thought they were in the main eMMC serial thread, but maybe not. I'll keep looking.

This is the terminal cmd it seems:
cat /sys/devices/platform/msm_sdcc.2/mmc_host/mmc0/mmc0:0001/name
But right now, my phone is not even booting up. how would I go to terminal emulator?

I'm suffering from brain fade today. I forgot about the fact that your phone wasn't booting. If memory serves, there is a terminal option in CWM recovery. If your recovery is still usable, try selecting the terminal feature and enter those commands there. Honestly though, this would only serve to confirm what we already know. Your eMMC has failed, so there's isn't much hope. The good news is most people have had no trouble doing a warranty exchange, even when sending in a rooted phone. Good luck!

As I tried to flash PD15IMG it is now into stock recovery. Need to flash CWM using fastboot but dont know whether it would work or not because last time I tried (before applying PD15) it failed saying Status 1. Need to check that.
But you know what the bigger problem is, I bought it from Swappa.com and I don't even know whether I can exchange it or not. I will have to send it to my friend who is in the US as I am outside.
Do they give warranty card or something when you buy (I dont know as I am not the original buyer ) ??

There's a terminal in cwm...? Since when?
Sent from my HTC Glacier using XDA Premium App

Nope, bought mine from eBay and htd fixed it when mine quit. Just called for a rma, advised it was bootloopimg then went blank, shipped it and got another or it back fixed. Call it won't hurt.

Hey I'm in the situation where my phone won't even turn on now... I called HTC already and they're actually mailing in a battery thinking that it's the reason the phone won't charge or turn on...
What were the steps you went through to get the to take it in? Did you end up getting a new one or the one you sent in for repairs? You paid for shipping or any repair fees? Any input would be useful... let me know!
Thanks!

It doesn't. As I said in that post, I wasn't sure. It turns out I was thinking of Amon-RA's recovery which does have a terminal option.

Yeah, It would be great if you tell the procedure. You directly called HTC guys or TMobile? What else do you need to ship along with the phone?

Flashing CWM??
Guys,
As I described my phone is in a boot loop but I can see it in fastboot but when i go to recovery it jst goes to bad state and have to remove battery. Is there a way to flash CWM recovery and opening adb shell as I might want to see what is eMMC and need to try this out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15299273&postcount=66 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1039504&page=2
I know we can flash recovery from fastboot but when i tried that it gave me an error saying you remote not allowed (android sdk on Win 7).

You weren't in fastboot mode, but in hboot mode.
Choose "fastboot" to be able to flash.

[Q] CWM Recovery Errors

I understand that there are similar threads out there but I still can't seem to figure it out. I apologize ahead of time for any wrong terminology, I'm pretty new to all of this. To give a background on what happend, I started my day off by rooting my phone with the following link (I had tried a different method with visionary plus and terminal but it wouldn't work)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=858996
this method worked just fine and gave me s=off, currently what I have is as followed:
Glacier PVT ENG S-OFF
HBOOT-0.85.2007 (pd1510000)
MICROP-0429
RADIO-26.03.02.26_M
eMMC-boot
After gaining my root I was excited to try and flash a new rom. I installed the clockwork rom manager from the market, flashed the recovery then backed up my current in case of future problems.
Next step for me was to flash a new rom. for this I followed
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1070444
everything seemed to be going fine, phone restarted and I sat waiting (since I read the first boot could take 10min or so) after at least an hour I began to worry. Nothing happened, just stayed on the mytouch 4g startup screen and never changed.
I rebooted into recovery to try again, I can get into my hboot and into clockwork Mod Recovery v3.0.2.4 just fine. but there are a whole bunch of errors I cant fix. When clockwork starts I get the errors
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
If I try to format anything (cache, system...) it will say
Formatting /cache... (or system depending on what I am trying)
Error formatting /cache! (or system)
If I try to restore to a previous time it will start to do the restore, it will first do the boot which goes fine, but when it tries to format the system during the restore it fails just like if trying to format it individually.
At this point I would just like to get my phone working, any help would be much appreciated. (please try and use details so I can follow... still trying to learn alot)
I hate to be the bring of bad news, and remember don't kill the messenger, but it sounds as if your phone is truly bricked. There have been several threads on this already. As i know you are aware of. And very few, if any, have recovered.
There is a thread Posted here that boils down to the fact if the VISIONary.apk & root.sh method do not work then you have a bad eMMC.
Since it appears your phone does have a bad eMMC, hope you have insurance on it.

neidlinger- i happen to have bought the insurance for 6 bucks a month or whatever it was - they said it extends the mfr warranty another year and then it gives you drop-in-toilet etc insurance with around a 120$ deduc.
I'm with t-mobile and got the phone thru the mail. If I take this back to a local TMO store for warranty claim, there's no difference is there? (i.e. you dont have to follow the mail route just because that's how you got it originally)
also- would these cache mount or failed -pu errors, essentially beyond repair - are we getting these to be recognized as hardware failure (i.e. no deductabel and counted as a mfr defect) or are these coming up as TMO insisting on counting them as some user fault, requiring the deductable to be paid??

9/10 times if you buy a phone through the mail you will have to exchange it through the mail they will not allow you to walk into a store and do the exchange. I ran into that with my blackberry 9700.

Is there any way to tell if the eMMC is bad. the visionary install went fine, just using the terminal to do the sh root.sh command wouldnt work, it would just keep saying failed (function not implemented) which is why I switched to visionary and adb gfree method... which worked like a charm, not a single hickup with it. the problems didnt start coming until after the rom instillation didnt work

i see you didn't read the thread i posted.
The link i posted is to a thread here @ XDA, called "Post your eMMC serial number". It has alot of information regarding this very subject, including how to tell if your eMMC is indeed a faulty one [ by serial number ].
it really doesn't matter when the problem happens. it just matters that it happened.
./gfree is basically forcing the rooting process to happen while the root.sh is asking for it to happen. If the root.sh process doesn't allow you to proceed, then you may have a faulty eMMC. you forced the phone to root and opened up a bee hive in the process.
yeah sorry, I posted and then was just reading that forum as you replied... sorry about that.

I do know one guy was able to via flashing an older recovery image via the hBoot, but you have to have the .85 engineering screen. Which you do not have.

Well you need to flash the 2.5.x.x recovery image for the mytouch4g from the hBoot, then reboot then navigate to the recovery and pray that it works. If it loads you might be able to load a new ROM but i only know of one case where that worked.

I would be that ONE case where this option did work. And the difference I have seen between the first time when flashing CWM worked and the second time (when it DIDN'T work) is the COMMAND error. If your CWM says anything about COMMAND error then flashing the old CWM isn't gonna work.

I'm not sure I fully understand your directions in the other thread. So when i download the zip, i get inside it and go all the way to recoveries to get out one of the disc image files. which one do I want, there is a 2.5.1.3 and 2.5.1.4 and a 3.0.0.5 but I'm assuming thats not it... but once I get one of those I rename it recovery.img then i use abd to push it... what is the command to push it? and i have to be in hboot then fastboot to push it?

Just a guess:
Wasn't there also an issue with flashing a official ruu (don't know wether this is the case here) when you're rooted and have s-off.
I believe I remember something along the ways of, that somewhere during the flashing process, s-on would be restored and your basically end up being stuck in between?

there is really not too much to worry about, if you private message me, I can give you Josh's information here on XDA - he can unbrick pretty much any G2/Desire-Z for $40 and has done 100's of them - he has like almost 500 Thanks on here -
the only thing he can't fix is a fried emmc chip, but thankfully those are relatively rare!
(and if the emmc chip is fried, then HTC will fix it, because that truly is their fault, so no worries!)
(HTC knows of the emmc chip failures, and that is why in this case they are not going to give you a hassle about the warranty, sort of like when an auto company has done a silent recall, so to speak)

Broken touch screen, need to get Stock

The touchscreen on my Fire stopped working today. I already talked to Amazon and am getting a replacement, but I want to revert back to stock before sending it in. I've seen ways to do this with TWRP, but I don't have a touchscreen to use TWRP, or any recovery for that matter, with.
Is there any way to do this?
I do have full ADB and Fastboot access, with FireFireFire working, but do not have a currently working rom installed (I was on CM9, and it won't go past the boot screen).

Does installing a custom rom void the warranty? Seems like it would be BS for Amazon not to honor it when it's apparently a hardware related issue.

YES! It absolutely does. The second the device was rooted it broke warranty.

The same thing actually happened to me earlier today. I was just browsing some sites on the ICS rom when it just stopped responding. I couldn't get it to recognize any touches even after a bunch of reboots, so I just figured it to be some bug that hadn't been squashed yet. When I dropped down to recovery and saw the same issue, I knew I had a real problem.
Hoping against hope, I tried both CWMR and TWRP on it and got no results. Like you, I figured it would have to go back to Amazon, so I started searching for a way to get it back to stock... nothing obvious jumped out at me because everything is written with access to recovery in mind... which doesn't help.
So, I started reading about adb and going through the built-in help. As I was familiarizing myself with some basic adb commands and options, I left TWRP open in front of me. I don't know how long I had it that way when I mindlessly tapped on the screen and thought I saw it flicker. Yes! I had pressed the Wipe button and it had taken me to that section. It's been working fine ever since.
I'm not claiming I did anything and I don't have a how-to on how to fix it, but it couldn't hurt to just leave the thing running in recovery for a while and see if the touchscreen comes back to life for you too.
Still, I'd love to see someone with more adb knowledge provide a simple tutorial on how to get it back to stock without access to recovery. I'm sure it would be helpful to someone in the future... maybe even me if the same problem comes up again.
Best of luck to you.
Just ignore my comment

If your on the rooted stock rom you could always wait until Amazon pushing the next OTA
You will have to make a fastboot image and flash that with fastboot. But before you create the image, you will have to create all the appropriate symlinks. Then you run...
Code:
make_ext4fs -l 512m -a system -s /path/to/fastboot_system.img /path/to/system_folder
That will create the fastboot image. Then when FFF gives you fastboot access, you run...
Code:
fastboot flash system fastboot_system.img
You will also need a fastboot image for recovery and the bootloader.
Isn't there any easy way like with my desire, simple ruu.
Or hasn't anyone created these images to flash. I also need to get back to stock everything and send it to amazon, my wifi gets error after some period of time and some times when screen goes off, try'd 3 roms and stock.
There is a way to tell the device to install /sdcard/update.zip via shell commands. I forget what they are tho. Something about the extendedcommands. If I have time tomorrow I'll look it up.

Thanks for the link. I'm back on this thread because I think my Kindle Fire touchscreen is now dead for good. However, those instructions do not work as-is because you need to press a button on the screen to tell the Kindle Fire to allow the host to mount it as a USB Mass Storage device. Although those instructions don't get you all the way there, I was able to use the core idea to get my Kindle Fire back to stock. So, many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
On top of the touchscreen not working, I ended up partially bricking the device trying to find a way to flash it back to stock, so I had also posted in the Unbricking thread. I posted my solution there....

Odds are, if you have a device that is booting correctly, you will be able to ignore steps 3 and 4 and get it booting back to stock. I do have a couple of other suggestions... Leave your USB cable hooked up to the Kindle Fire as it boots into stock for the first time. This is the only time that it will automatically mount the /sdcard to your computer and you will have a chance to reclaim (and delete) all the files stored there. You can also do something like 'adb pull /sdcard C:\sdcard' before you flash. Also, depending on what ROM and apps you were using before starting the process, you might want to delete your user data and reset the device to factory defaults. You can do this with 'fastboot erase userdata' and the next time you start the device, you'll get a warning that it's about to reset. Hit the power button and you should have a clean, fresh from the factory Kindle fire... albeit with a broken touchscreen. Good luck!
After several failed attempts to follow this guide (no offense to posters; I appreciate your contributions), I found this to be the simplest method.
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/10817721/wipe-data-factory-reset-through-adb
Download stock update, then it's basic procedure in adb:
adb push C:/update.zip /sdcard/update.zip
adb shell
recovery --wipe_data
After reboot, go back into to adb shell and do "recovery--update_package=/sdcard/update.zip"
Factory reset, etc. and you're good to go.

flash write failure

Dear guys,
due to problems within this morning, i restarted my phone to wipe dalvik/cache.
But it occured that TWRP somehowe needs to have a password (which i didn't ever set though).
Didn't boot up at all now. Even with toolkit no chance to do anything with the device.
Any further suggestions/ideas?
Try flashing the factory image without using a tool kit. Google nexus 4 factory image. Download it to your pc and extract it. Run the flash-all.bat you'll find in there.

Some Partitions of the phone have got some bad blocks causing it to act in such a way !! Seems RMA(if available) is the best recourse since there is no definative solution to this problem !! You can try hard reboot as well as someone once pointed out that his n4 magically restored during it but others dint have that much of luck !! Also u could give LGNPST a try but since that also writes the partition it is highly unlikely to get you through !! One Solution I know will surely work is Qualcomm PST using the HighSpeed USB Device . But unfortunately we need an expert help, probably a Qualcomm employee to get in touch with since the tool has still not been cracked by anyone for n4 though I read somewhere that someone was able to restore using QPST !! Also mostly a JTAG Repair can help you but thats a rip off !! I'll anyday prefer a official LG/Google Repair over a JTAG !!
Hope you find my post useful !!
THanks Guys,
JD5, it didn't work.
Corresponding to Nabendu's post i guess it is the issue mentioned here.

So therefore i don't see any chance :-/

I was afraid of that. Try one thing. Relock the bootloader, fastboot oem lock, then re-boot and see if the bootloader locks. If it doesn't, and it probably won't, then rma is your option.
Edit, haha, I just read that thread you posted and they tried the same thing

i was already trying that. at first it seems that the bootloader got locked again but right after restart it is already unlocked again.
I guess RMA will cause problems due to the fact that it was a rooted Nexus, using a custom rom.

Google seems to have been pretty good with rma's when it's a hardware failure. Pretty sure your emmc is borked. But you never know until you send it in. Hopefully there won't be a problem.

Ok I'll give it a try on monday. But as far as i know, i'll need to call them first.
I could imagine that they'll try to let me wipe my data or give me any kind of instructions to see if they can resolve the problem right away? What do i tell them?
At latest when they'll lead me to the recovery i'll get stuck using TWRP at latest.
Any kind of conversation dialogue i can follow up?
Let's try one more thing, inside the factory image is a zip file, extract that. In there is recovery.img. Put that file in the same folder as fastboot.exe. In fastboot try fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
If it works it'll put the stock recovery on.

Nope, same issue " flash write failure"
I can't get any kind o access...
But don't leave any more thoughts on it. Won't work though, i won't want to bother you all the time

It won't let you flash that either to the best of my knowledge !! Just don't tell those operators that you have unlocked your bootloader and have a custom recovery !! Basically they won't tell u to go into stock recovery !! They'll just ask you hard reset the phone using physical keys !! Bdw check my pm !!

Np, not sure what to tell them. It still boots I assume so you can't tell them it won't boot. I guess just the truth, it is a developer phone after all so it should be flashable

Hello... Try sideloading a full OTA of your choice from here: https://developers.google.com/android/ota#angler
It needs to be newer than the installed version. Not sure it will solve your issue though. Maybe someone else will chime in with a better solution...
If nothing works, RMA your device.
Good luck...
Thanks for the advice.
I tried to manually flash OTA but it falied because of the locked bootloader.
I am not sure if there is anyone could point me to do it via ADB. I tried using ADB but the phone is not recognized by my computer yet.

Hey...
Reboot into Bootloader. Select recovery mode with the volume rocker and press power.
Once you see the Android guy laying down with his belly opened, press power and tap volume up once.
On the menu select: apply update from ADB
From here type in a command prompt:
adb sideload "name of the full OTA zip you downloaded without quote"
Supposing you have prior knowledge with ADB. Let me know if something is not clear here...
Good luck...
I finally get ADB recognized Nexus 6p. But the ota stop flash at 46%. failed to read command: No error.

You might have to RMA. I believe "no command" means the emmc has died.

That is too bad. The warranty was expired in January.... It can't be RMA.... I wished there are some hopes there

Hello...
Try sideloading the 7.1.2 OTA. Nothing to loose... If it fails yet, sorry, I don't know what else to do.
Good luck..

If you bought the phone direct from Google, you will likely get a one time exception.

Yes, call them anyway if you purchased from Google. I was 5 months out of warranty for my 6p and they replaced it because I was having battery issues.

Probably so. There is one guy who found a 6P with a shattered screen for sale and paid a local repair shop to have the motherboard swapped out. Claims it cost him less than USD $100 but he is in South Korea. You're probably better off cutting your losses and finding another phone... after Huawei tells you NO three times.

posted it on craigslist now.
( I noticed that you are in the Woodlands area. I missed the time when I am in Houston. One of the best memories)
just a follow-up to somebody might see encounter the same thing. I was not able to fix the phone.
With a locked bootloader and "encryption unsuccessful" page, you might try warranty first. If that does not work, you might want to take rescue OTA from google and flash it in recovery via " install update via ADB".
Please be aware that rescue OTA is different from system image and should be flash via ADB in recovery.
Good luck.

Hello,
What rescue OTA? Something different than the usual OTA you would sideload with ADB?

Here are Rescue OTA. One would need to flash it with ADB in recovery. https://developers.google.com/android/ota
The following one is firmware/factory image. One would need to flash it with fastboot while in bootloader mode : https://developers.google.com/android/images
Use the correct zip file according to your flashing mode ( recovery or bootloader)

Hello,
I see nothing different than hmm an OTA here. I thought that was a "special" OTA, but no.
Not sure why it's called rescue OTA, lol.
Thanks for the links, but i know exactly what an OTA and a factory image are. :good:
Thanks...
Hello!
I have the same "Encryption unsuccessful" issue. It happened many times recently. First I replaced the battery, because it produced early sudden shutdown at 30-40%, and could run only for a few hours from 100% to 40%.
The new battery is enough for 30-40 hours as I use it, and can operate the phone down to 1-2% before shutting down.
But if I have to restart the phone, the encryption unsuccessful problem still comes up randomly after battery replacement. I can restart several times without problem, then randomly just fails. Mostly after software updates I guess... I have stock firmware, stock rom, etc. the only thing was made that I have installed TWRP, and wiped user data. Hope that helps. Can it be the defect of the emmc ? If so, how shall I diagnose it?
I'm very newbie android user, I changed from Windows Phone ( ) only a few months ago...
The question is what could cause the Encryption unsuccessful error? It's interesting, that if I enter any random numbers as unlock code, the phone tells that it appears to be valid, but unfortunately cannot decrypt data.
So I would like only to disable forced encryption, maybe that helps. Could someone point me to the right direction about what exactly should I do? Is it enough to flash a modded kernel to disable encryption? I don't want to root, or experiment with custom roms and I would stick to the factory firmware as much as I can, but without encryption of corse...
thanks!
