Ok, I've recently purchased a 8525 from Cingular Wireless (USA), because I liked the phone and it's a good management tool. My only complaint is I play a mud game (ooh... yeah... mudgame ) here at http://www.dsl-mud.org , now I work for a large banking institution and more often than not, I find myself with too much time on my hands. I've spent two weeks searching for possible fixes to this, but I cannot seem to connect to the telnet to play it. If I use Terminal Client Services, I can connect to the server, which I am not the owner of DSL and have no access to it. If I try to put in the port # (mud.dsl-mud.org:4000 or www.dsl-mud.org:4000) it won't recognize the port because of the : I've tried upgrading the .NET Framework... to no avail as well.
Also, problem #2 is my Pocket MSN, which works great, I really do love the app, but after about a minute, I can send messages but not recieve any.... any ideas (Before and after .NET Framework update)
Edited to add this:
Also, using bluetooth connection, I cannot seem to connect to my brother's RAZR V3 phone to send files etc. The two will recognize eachother but it only shows "Dialup Networking" as the services available
The phone is the Cingular 8525 (hermes), no 3rd party app's except for the multiple telnet clients I've tried... is it possibly a registry edit I need to do?
Thanks in advance (I asked here because after searching through multiple forums, you guys seem to be the most knowedgeable/helpfull)
Hallo and welcome to the forum DSLMulassassin.
Unfortunately I am not competent to answer your question(s).
I just wanted to say that often more answers are gained when the thread title gives fairly specific info on the problem. So where people might not look at a thread called "a little confused here" they might open a thread called "problems connecting to telnet". This also helps greatly when people search based on thread titles. So if you get good answers, folks doing future searches on "telnet" will benefit as well.
Hope you get some replies
Mike
Yeah, you're correct Mike, just it's late and I couldn't think of a better topic, but you are 100% right.
Fixed bluetooth problem
For Terminal Services, frankly, upgrade to Crossbow, or search around for the registry hack that lets you specify a custom port. Can't remember it off hand, it might be in the wiki. Fuzzy search for it, or google the site.

While I agree that upgrading to Crossbow would probably be better, I do not feel like flashing my ROM, I say that because I am too new to this, and do not want to risk Bricking my device... maybe when I've read over everything for a few more weeks and feel comfortable that I know what I'm doing. Do you think it might be a registry setting blocking ports?
OK. I have never owned or used a Winmo device, so prefer to take advice from actual users, rather than random google hits.
As we are getting so close to actually owning these hot devices (UK), I was just wondering anout web security, what with it being a Microshaft OS, and all.
I would be using the device quite a lot for Internet browsing, etc, so . . . .
Should i install antivirus software, and/or anti spyware software?
If so, what do other Winmo users recommend, Allbeit for other devices, and what would be available for X1 anyway?
Cheers for any help, people.
Stay happy, John
Hi,
Read the following article;
Title: "Mobile security: An ounce of prevention"
Link: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/totalaccess/columns/mobile-security.mspx
Links five antiviruses on that site. I also hear that McAfee also provides a mobile solution - if so, then i'm probably gonna try out that first. But am hoping that Xperia does come with it's own protection software...
Best Regards.
Is there really any point?
They're 500 viruses for ALL mobile OSs maximum...
And most of them arent that harmful at all, it'll be quite hard to get infected and not that hard to get rid of it...
Yeah, don't think the overhead is worth it. I don't leave my Bluetooth on and don't open attachments you don't expect...you should be fine
Cool... since this'll be my first WinMo device, i was wondering if i needed an antivirus or not. I figure not.
i realise this is quite an old post but i'm also a noob and was thinking the same thing. Another forum told me it was essential to buy a virus protector but here it seems not. Now the xperia is released and known...how important is it to get one? Thanks
put an antivirus on your pda si one of the most stupid things you can do
hehe i was thinking as much! some people in other forums are obviously a bit stupid then haha. thanks
Just scan all the files before you transfer them on the desktop if you're worried and only get "over the air" cab files from places you trust..
Attachments can be (and should be Imo) set to download manually in email settings on your device.
am a windows platform owner since 2001 and since then i have never used a security software and never been hit or attacked though i would call my self a heavy internet user since i use internet as a dataplan and through active sync and even back in those days i used to use it as dialup
Greetings!
I've been looking for quite some time now for a way to get around the Chinese firewall on my phone. I have a paid VPN tunneling account that I use on my desktops but have had no luck getting my phone to access it. I tried openvpn client here but the program won't start on WM 6.5 (Energy Rom), all I get is "Default Ime" displayed in the upper right corner of the screen and nothing else. I've got the config, cert, ca.cert, and key files from my vpn service, but can't get the darn program to start to import them or initiate a connection.
Is there another way to do this? I really miss the Facebook integration (facebook blocked in China), YouTube (blocked), and Skype (blocked)....anyone had success with this client on WM6.5? HELP!!
THANKS!!
Am I really then only person who wants to use something like ultravpn on their Wm phone?
RealVNC makes a Mobile Viewer
you need to turn off the TouchFlo3d to see the openvpn icon
Start->Settings->Today and disable TouchFlo3d
A bit of a pain in the arse
Am still trying to get it work
Yeah, I found that. Have been getting down into the nitty gritty of the config file, I think I've got it sorted out and will be posting up here this weekend when I get some time to test. Thanks!
I am not sure if my issues are TAP Vs Tun issues. Hoping that I get to the pub early enough this weekend to get it sorted.
I sorely miss hulu.com- took them a while to twig that that the 194.xxx.xxx.xxx range was t-mobile UK.
BTW who do use for your VPN acc?
I have just signed up for a vpsville.ca openVpn account. Great price and they seem to be reliable- btw google for life-time discount codes.
Any progess with this? I have gotten to where I can get the client to connect to my vpn server and request my login info, but no dice getting the phone to route traffic through the vpn tunnel.
I've been using torrentfreedom but am looking to change as they have become REALLY unreliable lately. THanks for the tip on what you're using, checking them out now!
I hope we can get this working!
To be honest I've been too busy to play with the config files.
Forgot to mention that the vpsville.ca option is a vps server that you are allowed to run openvpn (or any other software that you want). The T&Cs say that it must be private use but I believe that you plus a friend or two on openvpn would be ok.
I like their refreshingly honest approach- unlike the those of firms/rackets such as fasthosts.co.uk.
vpsville say that you can pretty much do whatever you want so long as it is legal. I believe that they had a major ballsup last year but I have been with them for 6 months, a UK vps and a more basic USA vps and have been very happy.
Set up is pretty straight forward with root access- they have templates- if you (decide to go with them and) need help I can assist- although a Linux noob I had no real problems. Incidentally I dont need to log in with passwords etc as the set up is my own.
EDIT+++++++++++++++++++++++++
BTW what is your avatar- dont think I have seen it before- never studied archaeology
Remove openvpnmgr.lnk from Windows\StartUp folder
I got around this by removing the openvpnmgr lnk file from Windows\StartUp folder - seems like there are some bugs with the openVPN manager running on wm6.5 (it was even buggy in wm6.1) on my Sprint Touch Pro2.
any luck so far
hi guys..
were u successful in bypassing the firewall??? im also in china and tryiing to do exactly the same thing as u guys..
did u get openvpn working????
I searched and got nothing in the forum about homebrew, so i figured i'd ask about it. Is it possible for us with this phone to do any of the homebrew stuff out there? I have been without my laptop so cannot really try anything yet, but I see articles about little apps and aesthetic changes people are doing to their Samsung and HTC wp7 phones and i want in on it too.
I loved that homebrew community when i had my Palm Pre back in the day and had it hacked to my liking. I really hope we can do this with our phones too. I have looked into it a little but, but i don't think the guys who have done the unlocking and developing for wp7 have used, tried or have access to our phone. I really hope I'm wrong and just haven't had any luck searching for answers, but so far i haven't really found anything specifically stating whether anything works on the DVP yet.
If they have, could someone point me in the right direction and i'll continue learning on my own? If not, then i hope we can some day.
Thanks for any help y'all can provide.
I'm looking to attack this problem from the other end. I'm the developer of one of those "little apps" you mentioned; specifically the one that lets you change the Search function in IE (when you hit the Search button or mis-type a URL).
I'm working with a homebrew library that more-or-less handles HTC, Samsung, and LG, but completely doesn't support Dell. I'd like to get it working with Dell so that
A) You all can use my app
B) More homebrew apps can be written for the DVP
Some questions that I have (answers to any are appreciated):
How can I programmatically identify a Dell phone? (On an HTC, you can check for HKLM\Software\HTC in the registry.)
Does anybody have ProvisionXML working on the Venue Pro yet? (This is a really handy way to make changes to the OS.)
Does anybody have a way to get access to the file system, even read-only, on the Venue Pro?
Thanks a bunch. In the meantime (and possibly helpful to this cause) there's a homebrew project called "Functional Webserver" in the WP7 Hacking forum. It should work on Dell phones (I think) and means you should have at least Socket (networking) APIs. It also gives (read-only) access to the \Windows directory, which may be very useful for getting other stuff...

I would like to submit my services to help you get that information... However, I'm not really sure how to get that to you. If you'd be happy to lay out directions so I can get you that information, I'll happily do it on my Dell Venue Pro.
Thanks for the help!
@nabiscuit Thanks for the offer. The first step is making sure your phone is developer-unlocked, so you can side-load (install directly, not from Marketplace) XAP application packages. All homebrew apps are distributed in this way. The official way to do this is to have a Microsoft developer account (http://create.msdn.com/) although for the next few weeks ChevronWP7 should also work.
For the first question, try installing a Registry Viewer or Registry Editor app - there are a number of them available, both on this site and on TouchXperience (I like the TouchXperience one a lot). Go poke around for anything that looks like a distinctive registry key or value. The most likely place is under HKLM. You could also just do a registry search (the better apps have at least some capability for such searches) for "Dell" as *anything* with that string is probably distinctive.
For the second, it will take access to native code. Using the "Functional Webserver" app you can download some file from the phone's /Windows directory. Checking them for useful COM exports would be helpful, although I'm not the person to ask about doing that - I can do NT drivers and I can do managed code, but COM is not my thing. Try asking for help with this in the general Windows Phone 7 Development and Hacking forum (http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=606).
For the third question, I could actually whip up a small app that *might* work already. You could also try Advanced Explorer (XDA) or TouchXplorer (TouchXperience) although I don't think either is guaranteed to work outside of HTC phones. If you're willing to try running an app that will check for read and write in a number of harmless parts of the file system, I can code one up for you to run and report results back.
Thanks again!
I'd love to get some homebrew development going, is there anything I can do to help?
Try getting in touch with notebookgrail (http://forum.xda-developers.com/member.php?u=3174632) as he seems to be pulling apart the DVP native libraries and finding lots of cool stuff to do with their COM interfaces. I don't know if he has registry write yet - one of the core functions that a lot of homebrew apps want - but if so I can work on getting it integrated into a nice cross-device library for writing apps which (should... grrr Samsung) work on any phone.

Did u mean to point it to me as i was the one who did pull apart the native libs.?
If not, sorry for the intrusion.
Yes, send your request to notebookgrail. I am not on his level for development purposes. But I do appreciate the comment.
Whoops, sorry about that notebookgrail! I must have looked at a response instead of the OP by accident. I've fixed my post above. Thanks a bunch for the work you've done. Any word on registry writing?
any progress?
I has not played with windows phone for a long time, just tried wp7 flash recently with HD2. damn, a lot tricky things.
- wp7 lock the SD card
- no file explorer.
- very hard to side load applications.
- cab file is not back compatible.
- certificate chain, Developer-uplock/ChevronWP7 unlock, Interop-unlock, FullUnlock.....
WTF are they trying to accomplish with all those limitations and making a system so complicated?
no wondering MS mobile market share is shrinking.

reading is blessing and knowledge.... you not read anything....
only BTTF ROM lock card.... others NOT...
yes, you have File Explorer, just need to install it or is already in ROM....
cab files is compatible with BTTF ROM....
no need any unlock for HD2 ROM-s.... is already unlocked....

- if you think all above listed items are not problems, why don't delete all other posts and leave the only candidate BTTF ROM or recommend BTTF as the best ROM in stick area.
- is there a BTTF 7740 rom? no, you had to upgrade from 7004-> 7403 -> 7720-> 7740
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1236027
- I can't get 7004 BTTF rom working in my HD2 after 6 hours, it just freezes in home screen after reboot. Flashing any android rom is less than 1 hour.
- don't you see many dedicated threads about how to revive SD cards?
- side loading has to go through all those hassle, in android, just one check box.
- windows live activation, needs activation code and call customer service to get the code. WTH. signing in android market place is like a breeze.
- in all, just my $0.02.
- Market share is raising, not shrinking.
- SD card in BTTF rom can be unlocked by CAB
- Yes, BTTF rom is 7004 and it's tricky to get it working because of SD card, just read and you will get results
- Actually installing BTTF from scratch to 7740 is better for me, makes you feel more.. customizable, like you have all power of your rom in your hands
- Windows Activation is annoying, just get used to it like others did
- What is MS trying to accomplish? Well I guess to success... And I'm fan, I love WP7.
By the way... every system is complicated when it is not OpenSource.. just be glad to have all these amazing people here and stop complaining.

totally agree... people who not satisfied with WP7 have too much choice and can use what want... this is beauty of game...
i tried all of them and can say: WP7 is best...
idiot
iphone is wide open right?
all android have unlocked bootloader right?
..and I dont get what YOU are trying to say us here
Microsoft was trying to create a more user-friendly and stable OS. and they did it.
Increasing stability means you have to make restrictions. and they did.
You should stay with Android probably if you have a problem with this.
And as said above, Microsofts market-share is growing. It's always hard to start from scratch.
I has not played with windows phone for a long time, just tried wp7 flash recently with HD2. damn, a lot tricky things.
Well, getting an OS running on a device 2 years old that was never officially supposed to have WP on it can take a wee bit of time, it was never going to be easy, be thankful its possible at all
- wp7 lock the SD card
It sure does, its called security, its an SD standard, not a MS one, its just very few have ever bothered to use it
- no file explorer.
on the stock WP OS, you dont need one, if you do need one, then you can get one
- very hard to side load applications.
And MS should make it "easy" for us?, side loading couldnt get any easier, open up WPDM or WPPT select the XAP and click install, how much easier do you want it to be?
- cab file is not back compatible.
Im assuming you mean CABs from Windows Mobile? or perhaps do you mean new CAB installs only work on Yuki/xbox compatible ROMs?, if its the former then actually people are already looking in to making old WM programs work on here, MS doesnt have to provide Backward compatibilty, its a different OS, different APIs and file systems. If it was the latter then thats the nature of modding, we have two systems, a cab updatable and zune updatable OS, or an OS that has all the bits installed but requirers reflashing updates, its called having choice
- certificate chain, Developer-uplock/ChevronWP7 unlock, Interop-unlock, FullUnlock.....
Thats all done on some ROMs and almost done on others, you dont need to worry about it
WTF are they trying to accomplish with all those limitations and making a system so complicated?
lol, its only complicated when you try an do something with it that it wasnt designed for, as an OS out of the box its one of the most simple, quick and well desgined OSs out there, MS got its hands burnt with WM because OEMs and Networks screwed the OS sideways, it wasnt making that mistake again and i dont blame them
no wondering MS mobile market share is shrinking
Of couse MS market share dropping, with WM it was essentially the only PocketPC/Smartphone maker out there, it enjoyed ~90% market share, until everyone else copied it, an to be fair caught MS with their eye off the ball.
i don't know, forcing people to use the cloud is pretty evil in my opinion. all it does is make what was once SECURE DATA completely unsecured.
when the government wants to control the internet, all they have to do is stage a big hakkor attack on "the cloud" and everyone will be so outraged that they will support complete government control over the internet.
How are they "forcing" you to use cloud?

try moving phone contacts to/from a PC without using the cloud
try syncing outlook and calendar with your pc without using the cloud
try moving Microsoft Word/Excel/Powerpoint documents to/from a PC without using the cloud
need any more examples?
Lol, I do all the time, its called exchange, and SharePoint. No one forces you, last time I checked no one held a gun to my head to use live, perhaps you'd rather google, oh wait a min... Funny thing with outlook, since I stopped syncing with it I've never had calendar miss match issues. Also email usually works just fine moving files about. Obviously exchange helps a bit here but no one is forcing you to use live or google
